Abstract:In this paper we use the convex integration technique enhanced by an extra iteration originally due to Källén and revisited by Kröner to provide a local $h$-principle for isometric embeddings in the class $C^{1,1-\epsilon}$ for $n$-dimensional manifolds in codimension $\frac{1}{2}n(n+1)$.

Abstract:Let Mn(n ≥ 4) be an oriented compact submanifold with parallel mean curvature in an (n + p)-dimensional complete simply connected Riemannian manifold Nn+p. Then there exists a constant δ(n, p) 2 (0, 1) such that if the sectional curvature of N satisfies $${\overline K _N} \in \;\,\left[ {\delta \left( {n,p} \right),\;1} \right]$$, and if M has a lower bound for Ricci curvature and an upper bound for scalar curvature, then N is isometric to Sn+p. Moreover, M is either a totally umbilic sphere $${S^n}({1 \over {\sqrt {1 + {H^2}} }})$$, a Clifford hypersurface $${S^m}({1 \over {\sqrt {2(1 + {H^2})} }})\; \times \;{S^m}({1 \over {\sqrt {2(1 + {H^2})} }})$$ in the totally umbilic sphere $${S^{n+1}}({1 \over {\sqrt {1 + {H^2}} }})$$ with n = 2m, or $${\mathbb{C}{\rm{P}}^2}\left( {{4 \over 3}\left( {1 + {H^2}} \right)} \right)$$ in $${S^7}({1 \over {\sqrt {1 + {H^2}} }})$$. This is a generalization of Ejiri’s rigidity theorem.

Abstract:We establish the weak continuity of the Gauss-Coddazi-Ricci system for isometric embedding with respect to the uniform $L^p$-bounded solution sequence for $p>2$, which implies that the weak limit of the isometric embeddings of the manifold is still an isometric embedding. More generally, we establish a compensated compactness framework for the Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci system in differential geometry. That is, given any sequence of approximate solutions to this system which is uniformly bounded in $L^2$ and has reasonable bounds on the errors made in the approximation (the errors are confined in a compact subset of $H^{-1}_{\text{loc}}$), then the approximating sequence has a weakly convergent subsequence whose limit is a solution of the Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci system. Furthermore, a minimizing problem is proposed as a selection criterion. For these, no restriction on the Riemann curvature tensor is made.

In particular, isometric immersions of local $C^{1,\alpha}$ regularity with $\alpha > 2/3$ belong to this class. The proof is based on the existence of a weak notion of second fundamental form for such immersions, the analysis of the Gauss-Codazzi-Mainardi equations in this weak setting, and a parallel result on the very weak solutions to the degenerate Monge-Ampère equation analyzed by Lewicka and the second author.

Abstract:We prove the existence of $C^{1,1}$ isometric immersions of several classes of metrics on surfaces $(\mathcal{M},g)$ into the three-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$, where the metrics $g$ have strictly negative curvature. These include the standard hyperbolic plane, generalised helicoid-type metrics and generalised Enneper metrics. Our proof is based on the method of compensated compactness and invariant regions in hyperbolic conservation laws, together with several observations on the geometric quantities (Gauss curvature, metric components etc.) of negatively curved surfaces.

Abstract:We propose a notion of integral Menger curvature for compact, $m$-dimensional sets in $n$-dimensional Euclidean space and prove that finiteness of this quantity implies that the set is $C^{1,\alpha}$ embedded manifold with the H{ö}lder norm and the size of maps depending only on the curvature. We develop the ideas introduced by Strzelecki and von der Mosel [Adv. Math. 226(2011)] and use a similar strategy to prove our results.

Abstract:We investigate isometric immersions $f\colon M^n\to\R^{n+2}$, $n\geq 3$, of Riemannian manifolds into Euclidean space with codimension two that admit isometric deformations that preserve the metric of the Gauss map. In precise terms, the preservation of the third fundamental form of the submanifold must be ensured throughout the deformation. For minimal isometric deformations of minimal submanifolds this is always the case. Our main result is of a local nature and states that if $f$ is neither minimal nor reducible, then it is a hypersurface of an isometrically deformable hypersurface $F\colon\tilde{M}^{n+1}\to\R^{n+2}$ such that the deformations of $F$ induce those of $f$. Moreover, for a particular class of such submanifolds, a complete local parametric description is provided.

Abstract:A notion of quasi-regularity is extended for the inclusion problem ${F(p)\in C}$ , where F is a differentiable mapping from a Riemannian manifold M to ${\mathbb R^n}$ . When C is the set of minimum points of a convex real-valued function h on ${\mathbb R^n}$ and DF satisfies the L-average Lipschitz condition, we use the majorizing function technique to establish the semi-local convergence of sequences generated by the Gauss-Newton method (with quasi-regular initial points) for the convex composite function h ◦ F on Riemannian manifold. Two applications are provided: one is for the case of regularities on Riemannian manifolds and the other is for the case when C is a cone and DF(p 0)(·) − C is surjective. In particular, the results obtained in this paper extend the corresponding one in Wang et al. (Taiwanese J Math 13:633–656, 2009).

Abstract:We prove uniqueness of smooth isometric immersions within the class of negatively curved corrugated two-dimensional immersions embedded into $\mathbb{R}^3$. The main tool we use is the relative entropy method employed in the setting of differential geometry for the Gauss-Codazzi system. The result allows us to compare also two solutions to the Gauss-Codazzi system that correspond to a smooth and a $C^{1,1}$ isometric immersion of not necessarily the same metric and prove continuous dependence of their second fundamental forms in terms of the metric and initial data in $L^2$.

Abstract:We present a discussion about the local isometric rigidity problem in codimension 2 with a concrete example. We show the necessity of extending the notions of genuine and honest rigidity in order to have the transitivity property. In order to do so, we show the necessity of studying the isometric immersions in semi-Euclidean spaces. We show that this extension comes with a natural type of singularity in the inner product.

Abstract:In this article, we study local holomorphic isometric embeddings from ${\BB}^n$ into ${\BB}^{N_1}\times... \times{\BB}^{N_m}$ with respect to the normalized Bergman metrics up to conformal factors. Assume that each conformal factor is smooth Nash algebraic. Then each component of the map is a multi-valued holomorphic map between complex Euclidean spaces by the algebraic extension theorem derived along the lines of Mok and Mok-Ng. Applying holomorphic continuation and analyzing real analytic subvarieties carefully, we show that each component is either a constant map or a proper holomorphic map between balls. Applying a linearity criterion of Huang, we conclude the total geodesy of non-constant components.

Abstract:We present a compensated compactness theorem in Banach spaces established recently, whose formulation is originally motivated by the weak rigidity problem for isometric immersions of manifolds with lower regularity. As a corollary, a geometrically intrinsic div-curl lemma for tensor fields on Riemannian manifolds is obtained. Then we show how this intrinsic div-curl lemma can be employed to establish the global weak rigidity of the Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci equations, the Cartan formalism, and the corresponding isometric immersions of Riemannian submanifolds.

Abstract:We study isometric immersions $f: M^n \rightarrow \mathbb{H}^{n+1}$ into hyperbolic space of dimension $n+1$ of a complete Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$ on which a compact connected group of intrinsic isometries acts with principal orbits of codimension one. We provide a characterization if either $n \geq 3$ and $M^n$ is compact, or $n \geq 5$ and the connected components of the set where the sectional curvature is constant and equal to $-1$ are bounded.

Abstract:In this article, we use the second intrinsic volume to define a metric on the space of homothetic classes of Gaussian bounded convex bodies in a separable real Hilbert space. Using kernels of hyperbolic type, we can deduce that this space is isometrically embedded into an infinite-dimensional real hyperbolic space. Applying Malliavin calculus, it is possible to adapt integral geometry for convex bodies in infinite dimensions. Moreover, we give a new formula for computing second intrinsic volumes of convex bodies and offer a description of the completion for the hyperbolic embedding of Gaussian bounded convex bodies with dimension at least two and thus answer a question asked by Debin and Fillastre [DF22].

On the fundamental theorem of submanifold theory and isometric immersions with supercritical low regularity

Abstract:fundamental result in global analysis and nonlinear elasticity asserts that given a solution $\mathfrak{S}$ to the Gauss--Codazzi--Ricci equations over a simply-connected closed manifold $(\mathcal{M}^n,g)$, one may find an isometric immersion $\iota$ of $(\mathcal{M}^n,g)$ into the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n+k}$ whose extrinsic geometry coincides with $\mathfrak{S}$. Here the dimension $n$ and the codimension $k$ are arbitrary. Abundant literature has been devoted to relaxing the regularity assumptions on $\mathfrak{S}$ and $\iota$. The best result up to date is $\mathfrak{S} \in L^p$ and $\iota \in W^{2,p}$ for $p>n \geq 3$ or $p=n=2$. In this paper, we extend the above result to $\iota \in \mathcal{X}$ whose topology is strictly weaker than $W^{2,n}$ for $n \geq 3$. Indeed, $\mathcal{X}$ is the weak Morrey space $L^{p, n-p}_{2,w}$ with arbitrary $p \in ]2,n]$. This appears to be first supercritical result in the literature on the existence of isometric immersions with low regularity, given the solubility of the Gauss--Codazzi--Ricci equations. Our proof essentially utilises the theory of Uhlenbeck gauges -- in particular, Rivière--Struwe's work [Partial regularity for harmonic maps and related problems, Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 61 (2008)] on harmonic maps in arbitrary dimensions and codimensions -- and compensated compactness.
