Abstract:This paper explain how the geometric notions of local contractibility and properness are related to the -types and -types constructors of dependent type theory. We shall see how every Grothendieck fibration comes canonically with such a pair of notions—called smooth and proper maps—and how this recovers the previous examples and many more. This paper uses category theory to reveal a common structure between geometry and logic, with the hope that the parallel will be beneficial to both fields. The style is mostly expository, and the main results are proved in external references.

Abstract:In our paper, we introduce special-generic-like maps or SGL maps as smooth maps and study their several algebraic topological and differential topological properties. The new class generalize the class of so-called special generic maps. Special generic maps are smooth maps which are locally projections or the product maps of Morse functions and the identity maps on disks. Morse functions with exactly two singular points on spheres or Morse functions in Reeb's theorem are simplest examples. Special generic maps and the manifolds of their domains have been studied well. Their structures are simple and this help us to study explicitly. As important properties, they have been shown to restrict the topologies and the differentiable structures of the manifolds strongly by Saeki and Sakuma, followed by Nishioka, Wrazidlo and the author. To cover wider classes of manifolds as the domains, the author previously introduced a class generalizing the class of special generic maps and smaller than our class: simply generalized special generic maps.

The first point of view leads us to a classification of certain germs of maps, which we review here although it is very well known. The second point of view leads us to a classification of certain multigerms of maps.

Abstract:One fundamental consequence of a scheme $X$ being proper is that the functor classifying maps from $X$ to any other suitably nice scheme or algebraic stack is representable by an algebraic stack. This result has been generalized by replacing $X$ with a proper algebraic stack. We show, however, that it also holds when $X$ is replaced by many examples of algebraic stacks which are not proper, including many global quotient stacks. This leads us to revisit the definition of properness for stacks. We introduce the notion of a formally proper morphism of stacks and study its properties. We develop methods for establishing formal properness in a large class of examples. Along the way, we prove strong h-descent results which hold in the setting of derived algebraic geometry but not in classical algebraic geometry. Our main applications are algebraicity results for mapping stacks and the stack of coherent sheaves on a flat and formally proper stack.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of proper morphism for schematic finite spaces and prove the analog of Grothendieck's finiteness theorem for it. The techniques we employ, which further develop the theory of schematic spaces and proschemes , are ultimately founded on descent properties of flat epimorphisms of rings that are applicable in other situations in order to weaken finite presentation requirements.

Abstract:We introduce and study the proper topological complexity of a given configuration space, a version of the classical invariant for which we require that the algorithm controlling the motion is able to avoid any possible choice of ``unsafe'' area. To make it a homotopy functorial invariant we characterize it as a particular instance of the exterior sectional category of an exterior map, an invariant of the exterior homotopy category which is also deeply analyzed.

Abstract:We consider equivalence relations among smooth map germs with respect to geometry of G-structures on the target space germ. These equivalence relations are natural generalization of right-left equivalence (i.e., A-equivalence) in the sense of Thom-Mather depending on geometric structures on the target space germ. Unfortunately, these equivalence relations are not necessarily geometric subgroups in the sense of Damon (1984). However, we have interesting applications of these equivalence relations.

Abstract:In this paper we develop the homological version of $\Sigma$-theory for locally compact Hausdorff groups, leaving the homotopical version for another paper. Both versions are connected by a Hurewicz-like theorem. They can be thought of as directional versions of type $\mathrm{CP}_m$ and type $\mathrm{C}_m$, respectively. And classical $\Sigma$-theory is recovered if we equip an abstract group with the discrete topology. This paper provides criteria for type $\mathrm{CP}_m$ and homological locally compact $\Sigma^m$. Given a short exact sequence with kernel of type $\mathrm{CP}_m$, we can derive $\Sigma^m$ of the extension on the sphere that vanishes on the kernel from the quotient and likewise. Given a short exact sequence with abelian quotient, $\Sigma$-theory on the extension can tell if the kernel is of type $\mathrm{CP}_m$.

Simplifying generic smooth maps to the 2-sphere and to the plane

Abstract:We study how to construct explicit deformations of generic smooth maps from closed $n$--dimensional manifolds $M$ with $n \geq 4$ to the $2$--sphere $S^2$ and show that every smooth map $M \to S^2$ is homotopic to a $C^\infty$ stable map with at most one cusp point and with only folds of the middle absolute index. Furthermore, if $n$ is even, such a $C^\infty$ stable map can be so constructed that the restriction to the singular point set is a topological embedding. As a corollary, we show that for $n \geq 4$ even, there always exists a $C^\infty$ stable map $M \to \mathbb{R}^2$ with at most one cusp point such that the restriction to the singular point set is a topological embedding. As another corollary, we give a new proof to the existence of an open book structure on odd dimensional manifolds which extends a given one on the boundary, originally due to Quinn. Finally, using the open book structure thus constructed, we show that $k$--connected $n$--dimensional manifolds always admit a fold map into $\mathbb{R}^2$ without folds of absolute indices $i$ with $1 \leq i \leq k$, for $n \geq 7$ odd and $1 \leq k < (n-3)/2$.

Abstract:We extend the Dikranjan-Uspenskij notions of c-compact and h-complete topological group to the morphism level, study the stability properties of the newly defined types of maps, such as closure under direct products, and compare them with their counterparts in topology. We assume Hausdorffness only when our proofs require us to do so, which leads to new results and the affirmation of some facts that were known in a Hausdorff context.

Abstract:In recent decades, topology has come to play an increasing role in some geometric aspects of Banach space theory. The class of so-called <math>w⁎</math>-locally relatively compact sets was introduced recently by Fonf, Pallares, Troyanski and the author, and were found to be a useful topological tool in the theory of isomorphic smoothness and polyhedrality in Banach spaces. We develop the topological theory of these sets and present some Banach space applications.

Abstract:In a 2005 paper, Casacuberta, Scevenels and Smith construct a homotopy idempotent functor $E$ on the category of simplicial sets with the property that whether it can be expressed as localization with respect to a map $f$ is independent of the ZFC axioms. We show that this construction can be carried out in homotopy type theory. More precisely, we give a general method of associating to a suitable (possibly large) family of maps, a reflective subuniverse of any universe $\mathcal{U}$. When specialized to an appropriate family, this produces a localization which when interpreted in the $\infty$-topos of spaces agrees with the localization corresponding to $E$. Our approach generalizes the approach of [CSS] in two ways. First, by working in homotopy type theory, our construction can be interpreted in any $\infty$-topos. Second, while the local objects produced by [CSS] are always 1-types, our construction can produce $n$-types, for any $n$. This is new, even in the $\infty$-topos of spaces. In addition, by making use of universes, our proof is very direct. Along the way, we prove many results about "small" types that are of independent interest. As an application, we give a new proof that separated localizations exist. We also give results that say when a localization with respect to a family of maps can be presented as localization with respect to a single map, and show that the simplicial model satisfies a strong form of the axiom of choice which implies that sets cover and that the law of excluded middle holds.

Abstract:We prove that every proper connective DG-algebra $A$ admits a geometric realization (as defined by Orlov) by a smooth projective scheme with a full exceptional collection. As a corollary we obtain that $A$ is quasi-isomorphic to a finite dimensional DG-algebra and in the smooth case we compute the noncommutative Chow motive of $A$. We go on to analyse the relationship between smoothness and regularity in more detail as well as commenting on smoothness of the degree zero cohomology for smooth proper connective DG-algebras.

Abstract:We explain how to see finite combinatorics of preorders implicit in the {text} of basic topological definitions or arguments in (Bourbaki, General topology, Ch.I), and define a concise combinatorial notation such that complete definitions of connectedness, compactness, contractibility, having a generic point, subspace, closed subspace, fit into $2$ or $4$ bytes. This notation is homotopy theoretic in nature, and is based on the following observation: A number of basic properties of continuous maps and topological spaces are defined using a single category-theoretic operation, taking left or right orthogonal complement with respect to the Quillen lifting property, repeatedly applied to a simple example illustrating the definition or its failure. Moreover, for most of these definitions this example can be chosen to be a map of finite topological spaces (=preorders) of size at most $5$. This includes the properties of a space being connected, compact, contractible, discrete, having a generic point, and a map having dense image, being the inclusion of an (open or closed) subspace, or of a component into a disjoint union, and others. Our reformulations illustrate the generative power of the lifting property as a means of defining basic mathematical properties starting from their simplest or typical example. The exposition is accessible to a student.

Abstract:In our previous work, we have constructed explicit smooth real algebraic functions which may have both compact and non-compact preimages on smooth real algebraic manifolds. This paper presents its variant. Our result is new in obtaining non-proper smooth real algebraic functions on smooth real algebraic manifolds satisfying explicit conditions on (non-)compactness of preimages whereas previously the manifolds are only semi-algebraic. Explicitly, this mainly contributes to two different regions of mathematics. One is singularity theory of differentiable maps and applications to differential topology. More precisely, construction of nice smooth maps with desired preimages. The other is real algebraic geometry. More precisely, explicit construction of smooth real algebraic functions and maps whereas we can know the existence and consider approximations of smooth maps by maps of such classes in considerable cases.

Abstract:In this note we obtain the surjectivity of smooth maps into Euclidean spaces under mild conditions. As application we give a new proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra.
