Abstract:In a recent work of Ayaka Shimizu, she studied an operation named region crossing change on link diagrams, which was proposed by Kishimoto, and showed that a region crossing change is an unknotting operation for knot diagrams. In this paper, we prove that the region crossing change on a 2-component link diagram is an unknotting operation if and only if the linking number of the diagram is even. Besides, we define an incidence matrix of a link diagram via its signed planar graph and its dual graph. By studying the relation between region crossing change and incidence matrix, we prove that a signed planar graph represents an n-component link diagram if and only if the rank of the associated incidence matrix equals c − n + 1, where c denotes the size of the graph.

Abstract:The region select game, introduced by Ayaka Shimizu, Akio Kawauchi and Kengo Kishimoto, is a game that is played on knot diagrams whose crossings are endowed with two colors. The game is based on the region crossing change moves that induce an unknotting operation on knot diagrams. We generalize the region select game to be played on a knot diagram endowed with $k$-colors at its vertices for $2 \leq k \leq \infty$.

Abstract:We introduce a topological combinatorial game called the Region Smoothing Swap Game. The game is played on a game board derived from the connected shadow of a link diagram on a (possibly non-orientable) surface by smoothing at crossings. Moves in the game are performed on regions of the diagram and can switch the direction of certain crossings' smoothing. The players' goals relate to the connectedness of the diagram produced by game play.

Connecting the Branches of Multistable Non-Euclidean Origami by Crease Stretching

Abstract:Non-Euclidean origami is a promising technique for designing multistable deployable structures folded from nonplanar developable surfaces. The impossibility of flat foldability inherent to non-Euclidean origami results in two disconnected solution branches each with the same angular deficiency but opposite handedness. We show that these regions can be connected via "crease stretching" wherein the creases exhibit extensibility in addition to torsional stiffness. We further reveal that crease stretching acts as an energy storage method capable of passive deployment and control. Specifically, we show that in a Miura-Ori system with a single stretchable crease, this is achieved via two unique, easy to realize, equilibrium folding pathways for a certain wide set of parameters. In particular, we demonstrate that this connection mostly preserves the stable states of the non-Euclidean system, while resulting a third stable state enabled only by the interaction of crease torsion and stretching. Finally, we show that this simplified model can be used as an efficient and robust tool for inverse design of multistable origami based on closed-form predictions that yield the system parameters required to attain multiple, desired stable shapes. This facilitates the implementation of multistable origami for applications in architecture materials, robotics, and deployable structures.

Abstract:Origami and kirigami have emerged as potential tools for the design of mechanical metamaterials whose properties such as curvature, Poisson ratio, and existence of metastable states can be tuned using purely geometric criteria. A major obstacle to exploiting this property is the scarcity of tools to identify and program the flexibility of fold patterns. We exploit a recent connection between spring networks and quantum topological states to design origami with localized folding motions at boundaries and study them both experimentally and theoretically. These folding motions exist due to an underlying topological invariant rather than a local imbalance between constraints and degrees of freedom. We give a simple example of a quasi-1D folding pattern that realizes such topological states. We also demonstrate how to generalize these topological design principles to two dimensions. A striking consequence is that a domain wall between two topologically distinct, mechanically rigid structures is deformable even when constraints locally match the degrees of freedom.

Abstract:Using Boolean algebra, we discuss the region unknotting number of a knot, and show that the region unknotting number is less than or equal to (c+1)/2 for any knot with crossing number c. This is a progress from (c+2)/2.

Abstract:Reconfigurable origami-inspired folding has recently gained significant attention due to its potential to achieve multi-shape changes through crease topological morphing, resulting in multi-functionality from a single original structure. However, it is one of the major challenges to determine all possible mountain-valley crease (MV) assignments that ensure rigid foldability and obtain duplicate configurations in large 2D origami tessellations or 3D cellular structures. In this study, we developed a straightforward algorithm that combines graphic representation and motion compatibility conditions to assess the reconfigurability of origami structures with 4-crease vertices including double corrugated, Miura-ori, and symmetric Eggbox vertices, as well as their 2D and even 3D cellular tessellations. Our analysis has revealed three types of oligo-modal origami tessellations characterised by a consistent number of MV assignments independent of tessellation size, and pluri-modal cellular origami structures that exhibit negative, zero, and positive Poisson's ratios which were verified through experiment. This work could serve as a stepping stone towards developing multifunctional metamaterials and devices based on reconfigurable origami through mountain-valley crease assignment.

Abstract:Origami folding provides a novel method to transform two-dimensional (2D) sheets into complex functional structures. However, the enormity of the foldable design space necessitates development of algorithms to efficiently discover new origami fold patterns with specific performance objectives. To address this challenge, this work combines a recently developed efficient modified truss finite element model with a ground structure-based topology optimization framework. A nonlinear mechanics model is required to model the sequenced motion and large folding common in the actuation of origami structures. These highly nonlinear motions limit the ability to define convex objective functions, and parallelizable evolutionary optimization algorithms for traversing nonconvex origami design problems are developed and considered. The ability of this framework to discover fold topologies that maximize targeted actuation is verified for the well-known “Chomper” and “Square Twist” patterns. A simple twist-based design is also discovered using the verified framework. Through these case studies, the role of critical points and bifurcations emanating from sequenced deformation mechanisms (including interplay of folding, facet bending, and stretching) on design optimization is analyzed. In addition, the performance of both gradient and evolutionary optimization algorithms are explored, and genetic algorithms (GAs) consistently yield solutions with better performance given the apparent nonconvexity of the response-design space.

Abstract:Combinatorial two-player games have recently been applied to knot theory. Examples of this include the Knotting-Unknotting Game and the Region Unknotting Game, both of which are played on knot shadows. These are turn-based games played by two players, where each player has a separate goal to achieve in order to win the game. In this paper, we introduce the Linking-Unlinking Game which is played on two-component link shadows. We then present winning strategies for the Linking-Unlinking Game played on all shadows of two-component rational tangle closures and played on a large family of general two-component link shadows.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce an equivalence relation on the set of local moves and classify local moves, called the extended $ST$-moves, up to the equivalence. Moreover, by inducing a binary relation on the set of equivalence classes of local moves, we show that an extended $ST$-move realizes the crossing change or the $SH(2)$-move. In addition, for any oriented knot and two extended $ST$-moves, we disscus the magnitude relation between the unknotting numbers of the knot via the moves, and show that there is an extended $ST$-move except $SH$-moves so that the knot can be transformed into the trivial knot by the single extended $ST$-move. Finally, we provide some examples of $ST$-moves with the binary relation.

Abstract:Origami has attracted much attention from scientists and engineers in recent years. Classic origami only permits rotations around creases, while origami-like structures in nature can also undergo a certain degree of extension at creases. In this paper, an earwig-inspired origami with rotational symmetry is proposed and analyzed by introducing soft creases. Such a soft crease is equivalent to a combination of a rotational spring and an extensional spring. The motion of the earwig-inspired origami is described using spherical triangles. Based on Lagrange's Equation, the nonlinear dynamic equation of the system is formulated. It is then solved by using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. The results of theoretical calculations are consistent with those of simulations in ADAMS. With the established framework, the bifurcation behaviors of the equilibria of the proposed system, including supercritical pitchfork and saddle-node bifurcations, are investigated. Such origami can realize both mono-stable and bi-stable mechanisms, while the corresponding design parameters are demonstrated in the design map. In particular, the properties of the bi-stable origami can vary with different equilibria. The configuration transformation could be achieved using a continuous excitation. However, it is sometimes sensitive to the initial conditions. Inspired by the working mechanism of earwig wings, a simple control approach for origami configuration transformation is proposed. The key is to stop exciting the origami when its deformation crosses an energy barrier. This work lays a foundation for the design and study of novel multi-stable and morphing structures and provides an efficient approach for their configuration transformation.

Abstract:Origami-based designs have been successfully adopted to solve engineering problems at different scales of application. This article proposes a method for designing origami tessellations composed of quadrilateral meshes and degree- 4 vertices. Crease patterns are generated starting from base units to which are applied tailored generation functions. The theoretical framework is further implemented in a parametric design workflow and automated with the aid of an Interactive Evolutionary Algorithm (IEA). The proposed workflow is a flexible tool that could be applied to design and analyse both rigid and non-rigid foldable origami patterns. The design domain could be investigated without pre-defined design goals and with the support of user-defined performance values.

Abstract:Recent advances in origami and kirigami have enabled the creation of unconventional structures that utilize precise folding and strategic cutting to achieve complex functionalities. In this study, we investigate the morphological and mechanical characteristics of one such structure, known as ori-kirigami. We establish the mapping between terminal folding states and parameter space, and analyze topologically feasible solutions for cyclic topology. The sensitivity of multi-stability to geometric parameters is investigated utilizing a nonlinear bar-and-hinge model. To facilitate automated design, analysis, and mechanical prediction, we propose a data-flow framework that supports the development of machine learning models for predicting mechanical responses. Additionally, symbolic regression is applied to derive a quantitative model for stiffness prediction. We anticipate that the findings of this work could open a path to engineering kirigami patterns for the design and fabrication of novel quasi-zero stiffness isolators, mechanical logic gates, and multistable shape-shifting structures.

Abstract:Non-developable origami is a unique type of origami structures that cannot be unfolded into a flat sheet without stretching. In this work, we study the kinematics and dynamics of such origami, theoretically, numerically and experimentally, considering rigid panels and stretchable creases. Unlike developable origami, we find that non-developable origami exhibits distinct folding angle relationships, leading to several separate branches in its kinematic configuration space with snap-through and locking behaviours. By modelling the creases as stretchable torsional springs, we derive a dynamic model to analyse the deployment of non-developable origami structures, from single-vertex origami to origami chains. Our dynamic model unveils the snap-through behaviour between the two kinematics branches of the single-vertex non-developable origami structure, which is further validated by experiments with excellent agreement. We believe that our kinematic and dynamic framework of non-developable origami will greatly expand the current design space of origami structures and guide the design of novel origami actuators.

Abstract:The use of origami in engineering has significantly expanded in recent years, spanning deployable structures across scales, folding robotics, and mechanical metamaterials. However, finding foldable paths can be a formidable task as the kinematics are determined by a nonlinear system of equations, often with several degrees of freedom. In this work, we leverage a Lagrangian approach to derive reduced-order compatibility conditions for rigid-facet origami vertices with reflection and rotational symmetries. Then, using the reduced-order conditions, we derive exact, multi-degree of freedom solutions for degree 6 and degree 8 vertices with prescribed symmetries. The exact kinematic solutions allow us to efficiently investigate the topology of allowable kinematics, including the consideration of a self-contact constraint, and then visually interpret the role of geometric design parameters on these admissible fold paths by monitoring the change in the kinematic topology. We then introduce a procedure to construct lower symmetry kinematic solutions by breaking symmetry of higher order kinematic solutions in a systematic way that preserves compatibility. The multi-degree of freedom solutions discovered here should assist with building intuition of the kinematic feasibility of higher degree origami vertices and also facilitate the development of new algorithmic procedures for origami-engineering design.
