Abstract:Using Boolean algebra, we discuss the region unknotting number of a knot, and show that the region unknotting number is less than or equal to (c+1)/2 for any knot with crossing number c. This is a progress from (c+2)/2.

Abstract:In a recent work of Ayaka Shimizu, she studied an operation named region crossing change on link diagrams, which was proposed by Kishimoto, and showed that a region crossing change is an unknotting operation for knot diagrams. In this paper, we prove that the region crossing change on a 2-component link diagram is an unknotting operation if and only if the linking number of the diagram is even. Besides, we define an incidence matrix of a link diagram via its signed planar graph and its dual graph. By studying the relation between region crossing change and incidence matrix, we prove that a signed planar graph represents an n-component link diagram if and only if the rank of the associated incidence matrix equals c − n + 1, where c denotes the size of the graph.

Abstract:Let $c(K)$ denote the crossing number of a knot $K$ and let $K_1\# K_2$ denote the connected sum of two oriented knots $K_1$ and $K_2$. It is a very old unsolved question that whether $c(K_1\# K_2)=c(K_1)+c(K_2)$. In this paper we show that $c(K_1\# K_2)> (c(K_1)+c(K_2))/16$.

Abstract:A crossing in a knot is nugatory if changing the crossing does not change the knot type. Using an invariant of certain types of closed 3-braid diagrams, we show that if a closed 3-braid contains a nugatory crossing then its braid index is one or two. This proves a special case of a conjecture on nugatory crossings due to Xiao-Song Lin.

Abstract:A weaving knot is an alternating knot whose minimal diagram is a closed braid of a lattice-like pattern. In this paper, the warping degree of a braid diagram is defined, and upper bounds of the unknotting number and the region unknotting number for some families of weaving knots are given by diagrammatical and combinatorial examination of the warping degree of weaving knot diagrams.

Abstract:Given a knot K in S^3, let u^-(K) (respectively, u^+(K)) denote the minimum number of negative (respectively, positive) crossing changes among all unknotting sequences for K. We use knot Floer homology to construct the invariants l^-(K), l^+(K) and l(K), which give lower bounds on u^-(K), u^+(K) and the unknotting number u(K), respectively. The invariant l(K) only vanishes for the unknot, and is greater than or equal to the \nu^-(K). Moreover, the difference l(K)-\nu^-(K) can be arbitrarily large. We also present several applications towards bounding the unknotting number, the alteration number and the Gordian distance.

Equivariant crossing numbers for two-bridge knots

Abstract:Symmetries of knots have been studied extensively, and strongly invertible knots are one of them. Lamm defined the equivariant crossing number $c_t(K)$, the minimum crossing number among all symmetric diagrams for a strongly invertible knot $K$. In this paper, we define $c_2(K)$ for two-bridge knots by restricting diagrams to two types. This gives an upper bound for $c_t(K)$. We give an algorithm to determine $c_2(K)$ for any two-bridge knot. The results of calculation by a computer up to 14 crossings are shown. As a corollary, we show 20 examples of knots up to 10 crossings in Rolfsen's knot table whose symmetry can be improved without increasing the number of crossings.

Abstract:A well-known algorithm for unknotting knots involves traversing a knot diagram and changing each crossing that is first encountered from below. The minimal number of crossings changed in this way across all diagrams for a knot is called the ascending number of the knot. The ascending number is bounded below by the unknotting number. We show that for knots obtained as the closure of a positive braid, the ascending number equals the unknotting number. We also present data indicating that a similar result may hold for positive knots. We use this data to examine which low-crossing knots have the property that their ascending number is realized in a minimal crossing diagram, showing that there are at most 5 hyperbolic, alternating knots with at most 12 crossings with this property.

Abstract:The cosmetic crossing conjecture posits that switching a non-trivial crossing in a knot diagram always changes the knot type. Generalizing work of Balm, Friedl, Kalfagianni and Powell, and of Lidman and Moore, we give an Alexander polynomial condition that obstructs cosmetic crossing changes for knots with $L$-space branched double covers, a family that includes all alternating knots. As an application, we prove the cosmetic crossing conjecture for a five-parameter infinite family of pretzel knots. We also discuss the state of the conjecture for alternating knots with eleven crossings.

Abstract:We show that for genus one knots the Alexander polynomial and the homology of the double cover branching over the knot provide obstructions to cosmetic crossings. As an application we prove the nugatory crossing conjecture for the negatively twisted, positive Whitehead doubles of all knots. We also verify the conjecture for several families of pretzel knots and all genus one knots with up to 10 crossings.

Abstract:In 1991, Negami found an upper bound on the stick number $s(K)$ of a nontrivial knot $K$ in terms of the minimal crossing number $c(K)$ of the knot which is $s(K) \leq 2 c(K)$. In this paper we improve this upper bound to $s(K) \leq \frac{3}{2} (c(K)+1)$. Moreover if $K$ is a non-alternating prime knot, then $s(K) \leq \frac{3}{2} c(K)$.

Abstract:We use the degree of the colored Jones knot polynomials to show that the crossing number of a $(p,q)$-cable of an adequate knot with crossing number $c$ is larger than $q^2\, c$. As an application we determine the crossing number of $2$-cables of adequate knots. We also determine the crossing number of the connected sum of any adequate knot with a $2$-cable of an adequate knot.

Abstract:The Vol-Det Conjecture, formulated by Champanerkar, Kofman and Purcell, states that there exists a specific inequality connecting the hyperbolic volume of an alternating link and its determinant. Among the classes of links for which this conjecture holds are all knots with at most 16 crossings, 2-bridge links, and links that are closures of 3-strand braids. In the present paper, Burton's bound on the number of crossings for which the Vol-Det Conjecture holds is improved for links with more than eight twists. In addition, Stoimenow's inequalities between hyperbolic volumes and determinants are improved for alternating and alternating arborescent links with more than eight twists.

Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2><p>We study methods for computing the bridge number of a knot from a knot diagram. We prove equivalence between a geometric and a combinatorial definition of the bridge number of a knot diagram. For each notion of diagrammatic bridge number considered, we find crossing number minimizing knot diagrams which fail to minimize bridge number. Furthermore, we construct a family of minimal crossing diagrams for which the difference between diagrammatic bridge number and the actual bridge number of the knot grows to infinity.</p>

Abstract:Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications, Ahead of Print. Traditionally, knot theorists have considered projections of knots where there are two strands meeting at every crossing. A triple crossing is a crossing where three strands meet at a single point, such that each strand bisects the crossing. In this paper we find a relationship between the triple crossing number and the double crossing braid index for unoriented links, namely [math]. This yields a new method for determining braid indices. We find an infinite family of knots that achieve equality, which allows us to determine both the double crossing braid index and the triple crossing number of these knots.

Abstract:We prove that a family of links, which includes all special alternating knots, does not admit non-nugatory crossing changes which preserve the isotopy type of the link. Our proof incorporates a result of Lidman and Moore on crossing changes to knots with $L$-space branched double-covers, as well as tools from Scharlemann and Thompon's proof of the cosmetic crossing conjecture for the unknot.

Abstract:Let K' be a knot that admits no cosmetic crossing changes and let C be a non-trivial, prime, non-cable knot. Then any knot that is a satellite of C with winding number zero and pattern K' admits no cosmetic crossing changes. As a consequence we prove the nugatory crossing conjecture for Whitehead doubles of prime, non-cable knots.

Abstract:An unknotting operation is a local change on knot diagrams. Any knot diagram can be transformed into a trivial unknot diagram by a series of unknotting operations plus some Reidemeister moves. Unknotting operations have significant importance in knot theory; they are used to study the complexity of knots and invariants of knots. Unknotting operations are also important in biology, chemistry, and physics to study the sophisticated entanglements of strings, organic compounds, and DNA. In this paper, we introduced a new unknotting operation called the diagonal move for classical and welded knots. We show that the crossing change, Delta-move, Sharp-move, Gamma-move, n-gon move, pass move, and 4-move can be realized by a sequence of diagonal moves. We also define the distance induced by the diagonal move and study its properties.

Abstract:Twisting a given knot $K$ about an unknotted circle $c$ a full $n \in \mathbb{N}$ times, we obtain a "twist family" of knots $\{ K_n \}$. Work of Kouno-Motegi-Shibuya implies that for a non-trivial twist family the crossing numbers $\{c(K_n)\}$ of the knots in a twist family grows unboundedly. However potentially this growth is rather slow and may never become monotonic. Nevertheless, based upon the apparent diagrams of a twist family of knots, one expects the growth should eventually be linear. Indeed we conjecture that if $\eta$ is the geometric wrapping number of $K$ about $c$, then the crossing number of $K_n$ grows like $n \eta(\eta-1)$ as $n \to \infty$. To formulate this, we introduce the "stable crossing number" of a twist family of knots and establish the conjecture for (i) coherent twist families where the geometric wrapping and algebraic winding of $K$ about $c$ agree and (ii) twist families with wrapping number $2$ subject to an additional condition. Using the lower bound on a knot's crossing number in terms of its genus via Yamada's braiding algorithm, we bound the stable crossing number from below using the growth of the genera of knots in a twist family. (This also prompts a discussion of the "stable braid index".) As an application, we prove that highly twisted satellite knots in a twist family where the companion is twisted as well satisfy the Satellite Crossing Number Conjecture.

Abstract:By examining the homology groups of a 4-manifold associated to an integral surgery on a knot $K$ in a rational homology 3-sphere $Y$ yielding a rational homology 3-sphere $Y^*$ with surgery dual knot $K^*$, we show that the subgroups generated by $[K]$ and $[K^*]$ in $H_1(Y)$ and $H_1(Y^*)$, respectively, have co-prime orders. We obtain an immediate corollary that, in conjunction with an argument of Lidman and Moore, proves the cosmetic crossing conjecture for knots whose branched double covers are Heegaard Floer L-spaces.
