Abstract:The rheological and heat-conduction constitutive models of micropolar fluids (MFs), which are important non-Newtonian fluids, have been, until now, characterized by simple linear expressions, and as a consequence, the non-Newtonian performance of such fluids could not be effectively captured. Here, we establish the novel nonlinear constitutive models of a micropolar fluid and apply them to boundary layer flow and heat transfer problems. The nonlinear power law function of angular velocity is represented in the new models by employing generalized “n-diffusion theory,” which has successfully described the characteristics of non-Newtonian fluids, such as shear-thinning and shear-thickening fluids. These novel models may offer a new approach to the theoretical understanding of shear-thinning behavior and anomalous heat transfer caused by the collective micro-rotation effects in a MF with shear flow according to recent experiments. The nonlinear similarity equations with a power law form are derived and the approximate analytical solutions are obtained by the homotopy analysis method, which is in good agreement with the numerical solutions. The results indicate that non-Newtonian behaviors involving a MF depend substantially on the power exponent n and the modified material parameter K0 introduced by us. Furthermore, the relations of the engineering interest parameters, including local boundary layer thickness, local skin friction, and Nusselt number are found to be fitted by a quadratic polynomial to n with high precision, which enables the extraction of the rapid predictions from a complex nonlinear boundary-layer transport system.
Some remarks about the stationary Micropolar fluid equations: existence, regularity and uniqueness

Abstract:We consider here the stationary Micropolar fluid equations which are a particular generalization of the usual Navier-Stokes system where the microrotations of the fluid particles must be taken into account. We thus obtain two coupled equations: one based mainly in the velocity field u and the other one based in the microrotation field $\omega$. We will study in this work some problems related to the existence of weak solutions as well as some regularity and uniqueness properties. Our main result establish, under some suitable decay at infinity conditions for the velocity field only, the uniqueness of the trivial solution.

Abstract:The micropolar fluid system is a model based on the Navier-Stokes equations which considers two coupled variables: the velocity field $\vec u$ and the microrotation field $\vec\omega$. Assuming an additional condition over the variable $\vec u$ we will first prove that weak solutions $(\vec u, \vec\omega)$ of this system are smooth. Then, we will present a concentration effect of the $L^3_x$ norm of the velocity field $\vec u$ near a possible singular time.

Abstract:The existence of a solution to the parabolic system with the fractional Laplacian (−Δ) α /2 , α > 0 is proven, this solution decays at different rates along different time sequences going to infinity. As an application, the existence of a solution to the generalized Navier-Stokes equations is proven, which decays at different rates along different time sequences going to infinity. The generalized Navier-Stokes equations are the equations resulting from replacing −Δ in the Navier-Stokes equations by (−Δ) m , m > 0. At last, a similar result for 3-D incompressible anisotropic Navier-Stokes system is obtained.

Abstract:In this research, the Cauchy problem of the 3D viscous Boussinesq system is studied considering an initial temperature with negative Sobolev regularity. Precisely, we construct local in time mild solutions to this system where the temperature term belongs to Sobolev spaces of negative order. Our main contribution is to show how the coupled structure of the Boussinesq system allows us to considerably weaken the regularity in the temperature term.

Abstract:This paper proposes and analyzes a mixed variational formulation for the Navier-Stokes equations with variable viscosity that depends nonlinearly on the velocity gradient. Differently from previous works in which augmented terms are added to the formulation, here we employ a technique that had been previously applied to the stationary Boussinesq problem and the Navier-Stokes equations with constant viscosity. Firstly, a modified pseudostress tensor is introduced involving the diffusive and convective terms and the pressure. Secondly, by using the incompressibility condition, the pressure is eliminated, and the gradient of velocity is incorporated as an auxiliary unknown to handle the aforementioned nonlinearity. As a consequence, a Banach spaces-based formulation is obtained, which can be written as a perturbed twofold saddle point operator equation. We address the continuous and discrete solvabilities of this problem by linearizing the perturbation and employing a fixed-point approach along with a particular case of a known abstract theory. Given an integer l≥0 , feasible choices of finite element subspaces include discontinuous piecewise polynomials of degree ≤l for each entry of the velocity gradient, Raviart-Thomas spaces of order l for the pseudostress, and discontinuous piecewise polynomials of degree ≤l for the velocity as well. Finally, optimal a priori error estimates are derived, and several numerical results confirming in general the theoretical rates of convergence, and illustrating the good performance of the scheme, are reported.

Fractional Voigt-regularization of the 3D Navier--Stokes and Euler equations: Global well-posedness and limiting behavior

Abstract:The Voigt regularization is a technique used to model turbulent flows, offering advantages such as sharing steady states with the Navier-Stokes equations and requiring no modification of boundary conditions; however, the parabolic dissipative character of the equation is lost. In this work we propose and study a generalization of the Voigt regularization technique by introducing a fractional power $r$ in the Helmholtz operator, which allows for dissipation in the system, at least in the viscous case. We examine the resulting fractional Navier-Stokes-Voigt (fNSV) and fractional Euler-Voigt (fEV) and show that global well-posedness holds in the 3D periodic case for fNSV when the fractional power $r \geq \frac{1}{2}$ and for fEV when $r>\frac{5}{6}$. Moreover, we show that the solutions of these fractional Voigt-regularized systems converge to solutions of the original equations, on the corresponding time interval of existence and uniqueness of the latter, as the regularization parameter $\alpha \to 0$. Additionally, we prove convergence of solutions of fNSV to solutions of fEV as the viscosity $\nu \to 0$ as well as the convergence of solutions of fNSV to solutions of the 3D Euler equations as both $\alpha, \nu \to 0$. Furthermore, we derive a criterion for finite-time blow-up for each system based on this regularization. These results may be of use to researchers in both pure and applied fluid dynamics, particularly in terms of approximate models for turbulence and as tools to investigate potential blow-up of solutions.

Improved decay results for micropolar flows with nonlinear damping

Abstract:We examine the long-time behavior of solutions (and their derivatives) to the micropolar equations with nonlinear velocity damping. Additionally, we get a speed-up gain of $ t^{1/2} $ for the angular velocity, consistent with established findings for classic micropolar flows lacking nonlinear damping. Consequently, we also obtain a sharper result regarding the asymptotic stability of the micro-rotational velocity $\ww(\cdot,t)$. Related results of independent interest are also included.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the first boundary value problem for a class of steady non-Newtonian micropolar fluid equations with heat convection in the three-dimensional smooth and bounded domain $ \Omega $. By using the fixed-point theorem and introducing a family of penalized problems, under the condition that the external force term and the vortex viscosity coefficient are appropriately small, the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions of the problem are obtained.

Abstract:In the present work we formulated the boundary-value-problem, comprising partial differential equations (PDEs) of steady flow for laminar/turbulent circular jet of a micropolar fluid. A new boundary layer-similarity transformation/solution was derived which is valid not only for the Newtonian fluids but also for the micropolar fluids. Through this transformation PDEs are transformed into the ordinary differential equations (ODEs). These ODEs were solved numerically by the finite-difference method. The obtained results were compared with existing results [9] for the Newtonian fluids. The comparison was favourable. The micropolarity influences were highlighted in the present work. The axial-fluid-speed and normal stress-component decreases but radial-fluid-speed, microspin and one of the normal stress-component increase as the micropolarity effect enhances. The fluid-speed, microspin, shear stresses, normal stresses and couple stresses are dominant in the vicinity of the jet-source whereas they all vanish as far away from the jet-source analogous to the plane-jet-flow [8]. In addition, axial-speed, discharge, microspin, shear stresses and the components of couple stress intensify with z linearly but radial velocity, normal stresses and the component of couple stress are independent of z. The micropolarity-effects on discharge diminish if the diameter of jet-source reduces. Analogous to the plane-jet-flow [8], teace(stress tensor)=0, for the micropolar as well as for the Newtonian fluids. The normal stresses decreases as r goes on increasing, analogous to the shear-stresses. But all the normal components of the couple stress tensor vanish. The couple stress tensor is symmetric and skew-symmetric if analogous to the plane-jet flow [8]. Finally the fluid-speed will also intensify if turbulent-influences are enhanced.

Abstract:In this work we study the 3D Navier-Stokes equations, under the action of an external force and with the fractional Laplacian operator $(-\Delta)^{\alpha}$ in the diffusion term, from the point of view of variable Lebesgue spaces. Based on decay estimates of the fractional heat kernel we prove the existence and uniqueness of mild solutions on this functional setting. Thus, in a first theorem we obtain an unique local-in-time solution in the space $L^{p(\cdot)} \left( [0,T], L^{q} (\mathbb{R}^3) \right)$. As a bi-product, in a second theorem we prove the existence of an unique global-in-time solution in the mixed-space $\mathcal{L}^{p(\cdot)}_{\frac{3}{2\alpha -1}}(\mathbb{R}^3,L^\infty([0,T[))$.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with a kineitc-fluid model with random initial inputs in the fine particle regime, which is a system coupling the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equations that model dispersed particles of different sizes. A uniform regularity for random initial data near the global equilibrium is established in some suitable Sobolev spaces by using energy estimates, and we also prove the energy decays exponentially in time by hypocoercivity arguments, which means that the long time behavior of the solution is insensitive to the random perturbation in the initial data. For the generalized polynomial chaos stochastic Galerkin method (gPC-sG) for the model, with initial data near the global equilibrium and smooth enough in the physical and random spaces, we prove that the gPC-sG method has spectral accuracy, uniformly in time and the Knudsen number, and the error decays exponentially in time.

Abstract:Journal of Hyperbolic Differential Equations, Volume 21, Issue 02, Page 423-500, June 2024. We prove that the time of classical existence of smooth solutions to the relativistic Euler equations can be bounded from below in terms of norms that measure the "(sound) wave-part" of the data in Sobolev space and "transport-part" in higher regularity Sobolev space and Hölder spaces. The solutions are allowed to have nontrivial vorticity and entropy. We use the geometric framework from [M. M. Disconzi and J. Speck, The relativistic Euler equations: Remarkable null structures and regularity properties, Ann. Henri Poincaré 20(7) (2019) 2173–2270], where the relativistic Euler flow is decomposed into a "wave-part", that is, geometric wave equations for the velocity components, density and enthalpy, and a "transport-part", that is, transport-div-curl systems for the vorticity and entropy gradient. Our main result is that the Sobolev norm [math] of the variables in the "wave-part" and the Hölder norm [math] of the variables in the "transport-part" can be controlled in terms of initial data for short times. We note that the Sobolev norm assumption [math] is the optimal result for the variables in the "wave-part". Compared to low-regularity results for quasilinear wave equations and the three-dimensional (3D) non-relativistic compressible Euler equations, the main new challenge of the paper is that when controlling the acoustic geometry and bounding the wave equation energies, we must deal with the difficulty that the vorticity and entropy gradient are four-dimensional space-time vectors satisfying a space-time div-curl-transport system, where the space-time div-curl part is not elliptic. Due to lack of ellipticity, one cannot immediately rely on the approach taken in [M. M. Disconzi and J. Speck, The relativistic Euler equations: Remarkable null structures and regularity properties, Ann. Henri Poincaré 20(7) (2019) 2173–2270] to control these terms. To overcome this difficulty, we show that the space-time div-curl systems imply elliptic div-curl-transport systems on constant-time hypersurfaces plus error terms that involve favorable differentiations and contractions with respect to the four-velocity. By using these structures, we are able to adequately control the vorticity and entropy gradient with the help of energy estimates for transport equations, elliptic estimates, Schauder estimates and Littlewood–Paley theory.

Abstract:We carry on the investigation started in [2] about the regularity of weak solutions to the strongly degenerate parabolic equation \[ u_{t}-\mathrm{div}\left[(\vert Du\vert-1)_{+}^{p-1}\frac{Du}{\vert Du\vert}\right]=f\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\mathrm{in}\,\,\Omega_{T}=\Omega\times(0,T), \] where $\Omega$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ for $n\geq2$, $p\geq2$ and $\left(\,\cdot\,\right)_{+}$ stands for the positive part. Here, we weaken the assumption on the right-hand side, by assuming that $f\in L_{loc}^{p'}\left(0,T;B_{p',\infty,loc}^{\alpha}\left(\Omega\right)\right)$, with $\alpha\in(0,1)$ and $p'=p/(p-1)$. This leads us to obtain higher fractional differentiability results for a function of the spatial gradient $Du$ of the solutions. Moreover, we establish the higher summability of $Du$ with respect to the spatial variable. The main novelty of the above equation is that the structure function satisfies standard ellipticity and growth conditions only outside the unit ball centered at the origin. We would like to point out that the main result of this paper can be considered, on the one hand, as the parabolic counterpart of an elliptic result contained in [1], and on the other hand as the fractional version of some results established in [2].

Abstract:We consider a multidimensional system of hyperbolic equations with fractional diffusion, constant damping and nonlinear reactions. The system considers fractional Riesz derivatives, and generalizes many models from science. In particular, the system describes the dynamics of populations with temporal delays, whence the need to approximate nonnegative and bounded solutions is an important numerical task. Motivated by these facts, we propose a scheme to approximate the solutions. We prove the existence of the solutions under suitable regularity assumptions on the reaction functions. We prove that the scheme is capable of preserving positivity and boundedness. The technique has consistency of the second order in space and time. Using a discrete form of the energy method, we establish the stability and the convergence. As a corollary, we prove the uniqueness of the solutions. Some computer simulations in the two- and the three-dimensional scenarios are provided at the end of this work for illustration purposes.

Energy Dissipation and Regularity in Quaternionic Fluid Dynamics using Sobolev-Besov Spaces

Abstract:This study investigates the dynamics of incompressible fluid flows through quaternionic variables integrated within Sobolev-Besov spaces. Traditional mathematical models for fluid dynamics often employ Sobolev spaces to analyze the regularity of the solution to the Navier-Stokes equations. However, with the unique ability of Besov spaces to provide localized frequency analysis and handle high-frequency behaviors, these spaces offer a refined approach to address complex fluid phenomena such as turbulence and bifurcation. Quaternionic analysis further enhances this approach by representing three-dimensional rotations directly within the mathematical framework. The author presents two new theorems to advance the study of regularity and energy dissipation in fluid systems. The first theorem demonstrates that energy dissipation in quaternionic fluid systems is dominated by the higher-frequency component in Besov spaces, with contributions decaying at a rate proportional to the frequency of the quaternionic component. The second theorem provides conditions for regularity and existence of solutions in quaternionic fluid systems with external forces. By integrating these hypercomplex structures with Sobolev-Besov spaces, our work offers a new mathematically rigorous framework capable of addressing frequency-specific dissipation patterns and rotational symmetries in turbulent flows. The findings contribute to fundamental questions in fluid dynamics, particularly by improving our understanding of high Reynolds number flows, energy cascade behaviors, and quaternionic bifurcation. This framework therefore paves the way for future research on regularity in complex fluid dynamics.
