Abstract:The rheological and heat-conduction constitutive models of micropolar fluids (MFs), which are important non-Newtonian fluids, have been, until now, characterized by simple linear expressions, and as a consequence, the non-Newtonian performance of such fluids could not be effectively captured. Here, we establish the novel nonlinear constitutive models of a micropolar fluid and apply them to boundary layer flow and heat transfer problems. The nonlinear power law function of angular velocity is represented in the new models by employing generalized “n-diffusion theory,” which has successfully described the characteristics of non-Newtonian fluids, such as shear-thinning and shear-thickening fluids. These novel models may offer a new approach to the theoretical understanding of shear-thinning behavior and anomalous heat transfer caused by the collective micro-rotation effects in a MF with shear flow according to recent experiments. The nonlinear similarity equations with a power law form are derived and the approximate analytical solutions are obtained by the homotopy analysis method, which is in good agreement with the numerical solutions. The results indicate that non-Newtonian behaviors involving a MF depend substantially on the power exponent n and the modified material parameter K0 introduced by us. Furthermore, the relations of the engineering interest parameters, including local boundary layer thickness, local skin friction, and Nusselt number are found to be fitted by a quadratic polynomial to n with high precision, which enables the extraction of the rapid predictions from a complex nonlinear boundary-layer transport system.

Abstract:The objective of this investigation is to examine the stability of the mixed convection flow of micropolar fluid in a vertical channel. The analytical solutions for the basic velocity, microrotation, and temperature are achieved by assuming the flow is steady, unidirectional, and fully developed. The differential equations for the perturbed state are obtained by introducing minor disturbances to the basic flow and then linearizing. Normal mode analysis is applied to obtain the generalized eigenvalue problems for the perturbed state. The Chebyshev spectral collocation technique is used to solve this eigenvalue problem numerically. The numerical results are examined and found to be in good agreement with previously published results as special instances of the present investigation. The critical modified Grashof number and wave number are calculated for various flow parameters. The instability curves are illustrated graphically for the different values of the coupling number, Reynolds number, micropolar parameter, Prandtl number, and micro-gyration parameter in the least stable mode. Under critical conditions, the preferred mode is identified.

Abstract:We are interested in coupled microscopic/macroscopic models describing the evolution of particles dispersed in a fluid. The system consists in a Vlasov–Fokker–Planck equation to describe the microscopic motion of the particles coupled to the Euler equations for a compressible fluid. We investigate dissipative quantities, equilibria and their stability properties and the role of external forces. We also study some asymptotic problems, their equilibria and stability and the derivation of macroscopic two-phase models.

Abstract:Two-dimensional viscous flow in a straight channel was studied. The steady Navier-Stokes equations were linearized on the assumption of small disturbance from the Couette-Poiseuille flow, leading to an eigenvalue equation resembling the Orr-Sommerfeld equation. The eigenvalues determine the rate of decay for the stationary perturbation. Asymptotic forms of the downstream eigenvalues were derived in the limiting cases of small and large Reynolds number, for the flow with a general mass flux per unit width, and thus the work of Wilson (1969) and Stocker and Duck (1995) was generalized. The asymptotic results are in agreement with numerical ones presented by Song and Chen (1995).
Purely elastic linear instabilities in parallel shear flows with free-slip boundary conditions

Abstract:We perform a linear stability analysis of viscoelastic plane Couette and plane Poiseuille flows with free-slip boundary conditions. The fluid is described by the Oldroyd-B constitutive model, and the flows are driven by a suitable body force. We find that both types of flow become linearly unstable, and we characterise the spatial structure of the unstable modes. By performing a boundary condition homotopy from the free-slip to no-slip boundaries, we demonstrate that the unstable modes are directly related to the least stable modes of the no-slip problem, destabilised under the free-slip situation. We discuss how our observations can be used to study recently discovered purely elastic turbulence in parallel shear flows.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the 2-dim two-phase interface Euler equation linearized at a pair of monotone shear flows in both fluids. We extend the Howard's Semicircle Theorem and study the eigenvalue distribution of the linearized Euler system. Under certain conditions, there are exactly two eigenvalues for each fixed wave number in the whole complex plane. We provide sufficient conditions for spectral instability arising from some boundary values of the shear flow velocity. A typical mode is the ocean-air system in which the density ratio of the fluids is sufficiently small. We give a complete picture of eigenvalue distribution for a certain class of shear flows in the ocean-air system.

Abstract:We propose a novel method to find local plane-wave solutions of the linearized equations of motion of relativistic hydrodynamics in inhomogeneous equilibrium configurations, i.e., when a fluid in equilibrium is rigidly moving with nonzero thermal vorticity. Our method is based on extending the conserved currents to the tangent bundle, using a type of Wigner transformation. The Wigner-transformed conserved currents can then be Fourier-transformed into the cotangent bundle to obtain the dispersion relations for the space-time dependent eigenfrequencies. We show that the connection between the stability of hydrodynamics and the evolution of plane waves is not as straightforward as in the homogeneous case, namely, it is restricted to the equilibrium-preserving directions in the cotangent bundle. We apply this method to Mueller-Israel-Stewart (MIS) theory and show that the interplay between the bulk viscous pressure and the shear-stress tensor with acceleration and rotation leads to novel modes, as well as modifications of the already known ones. We conclude that, within the domain of applicability, i.e., when boundary effects are negligible and the vorticity is not too large, MIS theory is stable and causal, with the same stability and causality conditions as for homogeneous equilibrium configurations.

Abstract:The influence of surface tension effect on the nonlinear hydrodynamics stability of a thin micropolar liquid film flowing down along a vertical cylinder is investigated. A long-wave perturbation method is employed to solve generalized nonlinear kinematic equations at free film interface. The normal mode approach is first used to compute the linear stability solution for the film flow. The method of multiple scales is then used to obtain the weak nonlinear dynamics of the film flow for stability analysis. Results indicate that both subcritical instability and supercritical stability conditions possibly to occur in a micropolar film flow system with surface tension effect. It is shown that the flow stability in the stable states increases as surface tension value increases. However, the flow becomes somewhat unstable in unstable states as surface tension value increases.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the stability of shear flows of Prandtl type as (U(y/√(ν)),0) for the steady Navier-Stokes equations under a natural spectral assumption on the linearized NS operator. The key ingredient is to solve the Orr-Sommerfeld equation. For this, we develop a direct energy method combined with the compactness method, which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the 2D incompressible anisotropic magneto-micropolar fluid equations with vertical dissipation, horizontal magnetic diffusion, and horizontal vortex viscosity. The goal is to investigate the stability of perturbations near a background magnetic field in the 2D magneto-micropolar fluid equations. Two main results are obtained. The first result is based on the linear system. Global existence for any large initial data and asymptotic linear stability are established. The second result explores stability for the nonlinear system. It is proven that if the initial data are sufficiently small, then the solution for some perturbations near a background magnetic field remains small. Additionally, the long-time behaviour of the solution is presented. The most challenging terms in the proof are the linear terms in the velocity equation and the micro-rotation equation that will grow with respect to time t. We are able to find some background fields to control the growth of the linear terms. Our results reveal that some background fields can stabilise electrically conducting fluids.

Abstract:We consider the construction of linear instability of parallel shear flows, which was developed by Zhiwu Lin (SIAM J. Math. Anal. 35(2), 2003). We give an alternative simple proof in Sobolev setting of the problem, which exposes the role of the Plemenj-Sokhotski formula in the emergence of the instability, as well as does not require the cone condition. Moreover, we localize this approach to obtain an approximation of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability of a flat vortex sheet.

Abstract:Abstract We are interested in the stability analysis of two-dimensional incompressible inviscid fluids. Specifically, we revisit a known recent result on the stability of Yudovich’s solutions to the incompressible Euler equations in $L^{\infty }([0,T];H^{1})$ by providing a new approach to its proof based on the idea of compactness extrapolation and by extending it to the whole plane. This new method of proof is robust and, when applied to viscous models, leads to a remarkable logarithmic improvement on the rate of convergence in the vanishing viscosity limit of two-dimensional fluids. Loosely speaking, this logarithmic gain is the result of the fact that, in appropriate high-regularity settings, the smoothness of solutions to the Euler equations at times $t\in [0,T)$ is strictly higher than their regularity at time $t=T$. This “memory effect” seems to be a general principle that is not exclusive to fluid mechanics. It is therefore likely to be observed in other setting and deserves further investigation. Finally, we also apply the stability results on Euler systems to the study of two-dimensional ideal plasmas and establish their convergence, in strong topologies, to solutions of magnetohydrodynamic systems, when the speed of light tends to infinity. The crux of this asymptotic analysis relies on a fine understanding of Maxwell’s system.

Stability threshold of nearly-Couette shear flows with Navier boundary conditions in 2D

Abstract:In this work, we prove a threshold theorem for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations posed on the periodic channel, $\mathbb{T} \times [-1,1]$, supplemented with Navier boundary conditions $\omega|_{y = \pm 1} = 0$. Initial datum is taken to be a perturbation of Couette in the following sense: the shear component of the perturbation is assumed small (in an appropriate Sobolev space) but importantly is independent of $\nu$. On the other hand, the nonzero modes are assumed size $O(\nu^{\frac12})$ in an anisotropic Sobolev space. For such datum, we prove nonlinear enhanced dissipation and inviscid damping for the resulting solution. The principal innovation is to capture quantitatively the \textit{inviscid damping}, for which we introduce a new Singular Integral Operator which is a physical space analogue of the usual Fourier multipliers which are used to prove damping. We then include this SIO in the context of a nonlinear hypocoercivity framework.

Abstract:Delving into the intricacies of vortex viscosity and spin gradient viscosity is a cornerstone of fluid dynamics, unveiling profound insights into the behavior of rotating fluids. These fundamental parameters are essential for the precise modeling of vortical structures and rotational flows, providing an invaluable understanding of phenomena such as turbulence, mixing, and the dynamics of rotating systems. This article explores the significant impact of the couple stress coefficient and heat transfer analysis on vortex viscosity, spin gradient viscosity, microinertia density, and viscous dissipation within the magnetohydrodynamic oscillatory flow of micropolar fluid. Specifically, the study focuses on the significance of tapered wavy channels submerged in a porous medium. The present study significantly advances the understanding of micropolar fluid flow, providing essential insights applicable to diverse technological fields, from materials engineering to thermal management systems. The methodology employed entails the utilization of a modified Boussinesq approximation and a time-dependent flow model, accompanied by the non-dimensionalization of governing equations through non-similarity transformations. The numerical solutions, acquired via the implicit Crank-Nicolson finite difference method, unveil intricate details of microrotation, velocity, and temperature profiles, thereby underscoring the profound impact of the studied parameters on fluidic dynamics. At the left boundary of the channel, the microrotation profile diminishes with varying vortex viscosity, while at the right boundary, it exhibits an increase. Conversely, variations in spin gradient viscosity manifest the opposite effect across the channel.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the long-time behavior of the solutions to the two-dimensional incompressible free Navier Stokes equation (without forcing) with small viscosity , when the initial data is close to stable monotone shear flows. We prove the asymptotic stability and obtain the sharp stability threshold for perturbations in the critical space . Specifically, if the initial velocity and the corresponding vorticity are -close to the shear flow in the critical space, i.e., , then the velocity V ( t ) stay -close to a shear flow ( b ( t , y ), 0) that solves the free heat equation . We also prove the enhanced dissipation and inviscid damping, namely, the nonzero modes of vorticity and velocity decay in the following sense and . In the proof, we construct a time-dependent wave operator corresponding to the Rayleigh operator , which could be useful in future studies.

Abstract:We study the linear stability of a planar interface separating two fluids in relative motion, focusing on the symmetric configuration where the two fluids have the same properties (density, temperature, magnetic field strength, and direction). We consider the most general case with arbitrary sound speed $c_{\rm s}$, Alfvén speed $v_{\rm A}$, and magnetic field orientation. For the instability associated with the fast mode, we find that the lower bound of unstable shear velocities is set by the requirement that the projection of the velocity onto the fluid-frame wavevector is larger than the projection of the Alfvén speed onto the same direction, i.e., shear should overcome the effect of magnetic tension. In the frame where the two fluids move in opposite directions with equal speed $v$, the upper bound of unstable velocities corresponds to an effective relativistic Mach number $M_{re} \equiv v/v_{\rm f\perp} \sqrt{(1-v_{\rm f\perp}^2)/(1-v^2)} \cos\theta=\sqrt{2}$, where $v_{rm f\perp}=[v_A^2+c_{\rm s}^2(1-v_A^2)]^{1/2}$ is the fast speed assuming a magnetic field perpendicular to the wavevector (here, all velocities are in units of the speed of light), and $\theta$ is the laboratory-frame angle between the flow velocity and the wavevector projection onto the shear interface. Our results have implications for shear flows in the magnetospheres of neutron stars and black holes -- both for single objects and for merging binaries -- where the Alfvén speed may approach the speed of light.

Barotropic instability of shear flows

Abstract:We consider barotropic instability of shear flows for incompressible fluids with Coriolis effects. For a class of shear flows, we develop a new method to find the sharp stability conditions. We study the flow with Sinus profile in details and obtain the sharp stability boundary in the whole parameter space, which corrects previous results in the fluid literature. Our new results are confirmed by more accurate numerical computation. The addition of the Coriolis force is found to bring fundamental changes to the stability of shear flows. Moreover, we study dynamical behaviors near the shear flows, including the bifurcation of nontrivial traveling wave solutions and the linear inviscid damping. The first ingredient of our proof is a careful classification of the neutral modes. The second one is to write the linearized fluid equation in a Hamiltonian form and then use an instability index theory for general Hamiltonian PDEs. The last one is to study the singular and non-resonant neutral modes using Sturm-Liouville theory and hypergeometric functions.

Linear instability of shear thinning pressure driven channel flow

Abstract:We study theoretically pressure driven planar channel flow of shear thinning viscoelastic fluids. Combining linear stability analysis and full nonlinear simulation, we study the instability of an initially one-dimensional base state to the growth of two-dimensional perturbations with wavevector in the flow direction. We do so within three widely used constitutive models: the microscopically motivated Rolie-Poly model, and the phenomenological Johnson-Segalman and White-Metzner models. In each model, we find instability when the degree of shear thinning exceeds some level characterised by the logarithmic slope of the flow curve at its shallowest point. Specifically, we find instability for $n<n^*$, with $n^*\approx 0.21, 0.11$ and $0.30$ in the Rolie-Poly, Johnson-Segalman and White-Metzner models respectively. Within each model, we show that the critical pressure drop for the onset of instability obeys a criterion expressed in terms of this degree of shear thinning, $n$, together with the derivative of the first normal stress with respect to shear stress. Both shear thinning and rapid variations in first normal stress across the channel are therefore key ingredients driving the instability. In the Rolie-Poly and Johnson-Segalman models, the underlying mechanism appears to involve the destabilisation of a quasi-interface that exists in each half of the channel, across which the normal stress varies rapidly. In the White-Metzner model, no such quasi-interface exists, but the criterion for instability nonetheless appears to follow the same form as in the Rolie-Poly and Johnson-Segalman models. This presents an outstanding puzzle concerning any possibly generic nature of the instability mechanism. We finally make some briefly comments on the Giesekus model, which is rather different in its predictions from the other three.

Spatio temporal linear stability of viscoelastic free shear flows: dilute regime

Abstract:We report the temporal and spatio-temporal stability analyses of anti-symmetric, free shear, viscoelastic flows obeying the Oldroyd-B constitutive equation in the limit of low to moderate Reynolds number and Weissenberg number. The resulting fourth order Orr-Sommerfeld equation is reduced to a set of six auxiliary equations which are numerically integrated starting from the rescaled far-field conditions, i.~e., via the Compound Matrix Method. Numerical results indicate that with increasing Weissenberg number: (a) the peak of the maximal growth rate (i. e., the maximum value of the imaginary component of the growth rate) is reduced, (b) the entire range of unstable spectrum is shifted towards longer waves (i.~e., the entire region of temporal instability is gradually concentrated near zero wavenumber), (c) the vorticity structure contours are dilated and (d) the residual Reynolds stresses are diminished. All these observations suggest that viscoelasticity reduces the temporal instability but does not completely suppress it. The Briggs idea of analytic continuation is deployed to classify regions of temporal stability, absolute and convective instabilties as well as evanescent (false) modes, in a finite range of Reynolds number, Weissenberg number and the viscosity coefficient. The main result is that, unlike Newtonian fluids, the free shear flow of dilute polymeric liquids are either (absolutely/convectively) unstable for all Reynolds number or the transition to instability occurs at very low Reynolds number, a finding attributed to the fact that viscoelasticity aggravates free surface flow instabilities. Although this transitional pathway connecting the temporally stable state to the elastoinertially unstable state have been identified by some in-vitro experiments, but until now, has not been quantified theoretically via linear stability analysis.
