Abstract:Let $s$ be a positive integer. Our goal is to find all finite abelian groups $G$ that contain a $2$-subset $A$ for which the undirected Cayley graph $\Gamma(G,A)$ has diameter at most $s$. We provide a complete answer when $G$ is cyclic, and a conjecture and some partial answers when $G$ is noncyclic.

Abstract:We obtain an asymptotic upper bound for the product of the p-parts of the orders of certain composition factors of a finite group acting completely reducibly and faithfully on a finite vector space of order divisible by a prime p. This enables us to give a new bound for the diameter of a nondiagonal orbital graph of an affine primitive permutation group.

Abstract:The intersection graph $\Delta_G$ of a finite group $G$ is a simple graph with vertices the non-trivial proper subgroups of $G$, and an edge between two vertices if their corresponding subgroups intersect non-trivially. These graphs were introduced by Csákány and Pollák in 1969. In this paper we answer two long-standing open questions posed by Csákány and Pollák concerning the diameter of intersection graphs. We prove some necessary conditions for a non-simple group to have an intersection graph of diameter 4. We also construct the first examples of non-simple groups and alternating groups whose intersection graphs have diameter 4.

Super commuting graphs of finite groups and their Zagreb indices

Abstract:Let $B$ be an equivalence relation defined on a finite group $G$. The $B$ super commuting graph on $G$ is a graph whose vertex set is $G$ and two distinct vertices $g$ and $h$ are adjacent if either $[g] = [h]$ or there exist $g' \in [g]$ and $h' \in [h]$ such that $g'$ commutes with $h'$, where $[g]$ is the $B$-equivalence class of $g \in G$. Considering $B$ as the equality, conjugacy and same order relations on $G$, in this article, we discuss the graph structures of equality/conjugacy/order super commuting graphs of certain well-known families of non-abelian groups viz. dihedral groups, dicyclic groups, semidihedral groups, quasidihedral groups, the groups $U_{6n}, V_{8n}, M_{2mn}$ etc. Further, we compute the Zagreb indices of these graphs and show that they satisfy Hansen-Vuki{č}evi{ć} conjecture.

Abstract:Given a graphic degree sequence $D$, let $\chi(D)$ (respectively $\omega(D)$, $h(D)$, and $H(D)$) denote the maximum value of the chromatic number (respectively, the size of the largest clique, largest clique subdivision, and largest clique minor) taken over all simple graphs whose degree sequence is $D$. It is proved that $\chi(D)\le h(D)$. Moreover, it is shown that a subdivision of a clique of order $\chi(D)$ exists where each edge is subdivided at most once and the set of all subdivided edges forms a collection of disjoint stars. This bound is an analogue of the Hajos Conjecture for degree sequences and, in particular, settles a conjecture of Neil Robertson that degree sequences satisfy the bound $\chi(D)\le H(D)$ (which is related to the Hadwiger Conjecture). It is also proved that $\chi(D)\le {6/5}\omega(D)+{3/5}$ and that $\chi(D) \le {4/5}\omega(D) + {1/5}\Delta(D) + 1$, where $\Delta(D)$ denotes the maximum degree in $D$. The latter inequality is a strengthened version of a conjecture of Bruce Reed. All derived inequalities are best possible.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a simple finite graph with vertex set $V(\Gamma)$ and edge set $E(\Gamma)$. Let $\mathcal{R}$ be an equivalence relation on $V(\Gamma)$. The $\mathcal{R}$-super $\Gamma$ graph $\Gamma^{\mathcal{R}}$ is a simple graph with vertex set $V(\Gamma)$ and two distinct vertices are adjacent if either they are in the same $\mathcal{R}$-equivalence class or there are elements in their respective $\mathcal{R}$-equivalence classes that are adjacent in the original graph $\Gamma$. We first show that $\Gamma^{\mathcal{R}}$ is a generalized join of some complete graphs and using this we obtain the adjacency and Laplacian spectrum of conjugacy and order super commuting graphs of dihedral group $D_{2n}\; (n\geq 3)$, generalized quaternion group $Q_{4m} \;(m\geq 2)$ and the nonabelian group $\mathbb Z_p \rtimes \mathbb Z_q$ of order $pq$, where $p$ and $q$ are distinct primes with $q|p-1$.

Super graphs on groups, II

Abstract:In an earlier paper, the authors considered three types of graphs, and three equivalence relations, defined on a group, viz.\ the power graph, enhanced power graph, and commuting graph, and the relations of equality, conjugacy, and same order; for each choice of a graph type A and an equivalence relation B, there is a graph, the \emph{B superA graph} defined on $G$. The resulting nine graphs (of which eight were shown to be in general distinct) form a two-dimensional hierarchy. In the present paper, we consider these graphs further. We prove universality properties for the conjugacy supergraphs of various types, adding the nilpotent, solvable and enhanced power graphs to the commuting graphs considered in the rest of the paper, and also examine their relation to the invariable generating graph of the group. We also show that supergraphs can be expressed as graph compositions, in the sense of Schwenk, and use this representation to calculate their Wiener index. We illustrate these by computing Wiener index of equality supercommuting and conjugacy supercommuting graphs for dihedral and quaternion groups.

Abstract:For k≥1 and n≥2k , the well known Kneser graph KG(n,k) has all k -element subsets of an n -element set as vertices; two such subsets are adjacent if they are disjoint. Schrijver constructed a vertex-critical subgraph SG(n,k) of KG(n,k) with the same chromatic number. In this paper, we compute the diameter of the graph SG(2k+r,k) with r≥1 . We obtain an exact value of the diameter of SG(2k+r,k) when r∈{1,2} or when r≥k−3 . For the remaining cases, when 3≤r≤k−4 , we show that the diameter of SG(2k+r,k) belongs to the set {4,...,k−r−1} .

However, a comprehensive understanding of these structures remains elusive. Abstract:The directed Cayley diameter of a finite group is investigated in terms of the monoid of product-one sequences over the group, via the new notion of directed geodesic atoms. Two quantities associated to the set of directed geodesic atoms provide lower and upper bounds for the directed Cayley diameter. An algorithm for computing the directed geodesic atoms is implemented in GAP, and is applied to determine the above mentioned quantities for all non-abelian groups of order at most $42$, and for the alternating group of degree $5$. Furthermore, the small and large Davenport constants of all these groups are computed (excepting the large Davenport constant for $A_5$), extending thereby the formerly obtained results on the groups of order less than $32$. Along the way the directed Cayley diameter of a finite abelian group is expressed in terms of its invariants.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group. Recall that an A-group is a group whose Sylow subgroups are all abelian. In this paper, we investigate the upper bound on the diameter of the commuting graph of a solvable A-group. Assuming that the commuting graph is connected, we show when the derived length of G is 2, the diameter of the commuting graph will be at most 4. In the general case, we show that the diameter of the commuting graph will be at most 6. In both cases, examples are provided to show that the upper bound of the commuting graph cannot be improved.

On the Diameters of Friends-and-Strangers Graphs

Abstract:Given simple graphs $X$ and $Y$ on the same number of vertices, the friends-and-strangers graph $\mathsf{FS}(X, Y)$ has as its vertices all bijections from $V(X)$ to $V(Y)$, where two bijections are adjacent if and only if they differ on two adjacent elements of $V(X)$ with images adjacent in $Y$. We study the diameters of connected components of friends-and-strangers graphs: the diameter of a component of $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ corresponds to the largest number of swaps necessary to go from one configuration in the component to another. We show that any component of $\mathsf{FS}(\mathsf{Path}_n, Y)$ has $O(n^2)$ diameter and that any component of $\mathsf{FS}(\mathsf{Cycle}_n, Y)$ has $O(n^4)$ diameter, improvable to $O(n^3)$ whenever $\mathsf{FS}(\mathsf{Cycle}_n, Y)$ is connected. These results address an open problem posed by Defant and Kravitz. Using an explicit construction, we show that there exist $n$-vertex graphs $X$ and $Y$ such that $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ has a component with $e^{\Omega(n)}$ diameter. This answers a question raised by Alon, Defant, and Kravitz in the negative. As a corollary, we observe that for such $X$ and $Y$, the lazy random walk on this component of $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ has $e^{\Omega(n)}$ mixing time. This result deviates from related classical theorems regarding rapidly mixing Markov chains and makes progress on another open problem of Alon, Defant, and Kravitz. We conclude with several suggestions for future research.

Abstract:The super edge-magicness of graphs of equal order and size has been shown to be important since such graphs can be used as seeds to answer many questions related to (super) edge-magic labelings and other types of well studied labelings, as for instance harmonious labelings. Also other questions related to the area of combinatorics can be attacked and understood from the point of view of super edge-magic graphs of equal order and size. For instance, the design of Steiner triple systems, the study of the set of dual shuffle primes and the Jacobsthal numbers. In this paper, we study the super edge-magic properties of some types of super edge-magic graphs of equal order and size, with the hope that they can be used later in the study of other related questions. The negative results found in last section are specially interesting since these kind of results are not common in the literature. Furthermore, the few results found in this direction usually meet one of the following reasons: too many vertices compared with the number of edges; too many edges compared with the number of vertices; or parity conditions. In this case, all previous reasons fail in our results.
