Abstract:For $D$ being a subset of positive integers, the integer distance graph is the graph $G(D)$, whose vertex set is the set of integers, and edge set is the set of all pairs $uv$ with $|u-v| \in D$. It is known that $\chi(G(D)) \leq |D|+1$.

Abstract:We develop a new approach to address some classical questions concerning the size and structure of integer distance sets. Our main result is that any integer distance set in the Euclidean plane has all but a very small number of points lying on a single line or circle. From this, we deduce a near-optimal lower bound on the diameter of any non-collinear integer distance set of size $n$ and a strong upper bound on the size of any integer distance set in $[-N,N]^2$ with no three points on a line and no four points on a circle.

Abstract:An integer distance digraph is the Cayley graph $\Gamma(\mathbb{Z},S)$ of the additive group $\mathbb{Z}$ of all integers with respect to some finite subset $S \subseteq \mathbb{Z}$. The domination ratio of $\Gamma(\mathbb{Z},S)$ is the minimum density of a dominating set in $\Gamma(\mathbb{Z},S)$. We establish some basic results on the domination ratio of $\Gamma(\mathbb{Z},S)$ and precisely determine it when $S=\{s,t\}$ with $s$ dividing $t$.

Abstract:Given a set $S$ of positive integers, the integer distance graph for $S$ has the set of integers as its vertex set, where two vertices are adjacent if and only if the absolute value of their difference lies in $S$. In 2002, Zhu completely determined the chromatic number of integer distance graphs when $S$ has cardinality $3$. Integer distance graphs can be defined equivalently as Cayley graphs on the group of integers under addition. In a previous paper, the authors develop general methods to approach the problem of finding chromatic numbers of Cayley graphs on abelian groups. To each such graph one associates an integer matrix. In some cases the chromatic number can be determined directly from the matrix entries. In particular, the authors completely determine the chromatic number whenever the matrix is of size $3\times 2$ -- precisely the size of the matrices associated to the graphs studied by Zhu. In this paper, then, we demonstrate that Zhu's theorem can be recovered as a special case of the authors' previous results.

Abstract:Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple graph without isolated vertices. For a positive integer $k$, a subset $D$ of $V(G)$ is a $k$-distance paired-dominating set if each vertex in $V\setminus {D}$ is within distance $k$ of a vertex in $D$ and the subgraph induced by $D$ contains a perfect matching. In this paper, we give some upper bounds on the 2-distance paired-dominating number in terms of the minimum and maximum degree, girth, and order.

Abstract:Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite, simple, connected, combinatorial graph on $n$ vertices and let $D \in \mathbb{R}^{n \times n}$ be its graph distance matrix $D_{ij} = d(v_i, v_j)$. Steinerberger (J. Graph Theory, 2023) empirically observed that the linear system of equations $Dx =\mathbf{1}$, where $\mathbf{1} = (1,1,\dots, 1)^{T}$, very frequently has a solution (even in cases where $D$ is not invertible). The smallest nontrivial example of a graph where the linear system is not solvable are two graphs on 7 vertices. We prove that, in fact, counterexamples exists for all $n\geq 7$. The construction is somewhat delicate and further suggests that such examples are perhaps rare. We also prove that for Erdős-Rényi random graphs the graph distance matrix $D$ is invertible with high probability. We conclude with some structural results on the Perron-Frobenius eigenvector for a distance matrix.

Abstract:Let G=(V,E) be a simple graph with vertex set V(G)={v1,v2,…,vn} and edge set E(G). Let D(G) be the distance matrix of G. For a given nonnegative integer k, when n is sufficiently large with respect to k, we show that λn−k(D)≤−1, thereby solving a problem proposed by Lin et al. (2014) [8]. The distance Laplacian spectral radius of a connected graph G is the spectral radius of the distance Laplacian matrix of G, defined asDL(G)=Tr(G)−D(G), where Tr(G) is the diagonal matrix of vertex transmissions of G. Aouchiche and Hansen (2014) [3] conjectured that m(λ1(DL))≤n−2 when G≇Kn, and the equality holds if and only if either G≅K1,n−1 or G≅Kn2,n2. In this paper, we confirm the conjecture.

Abstract:Let G be a connected graph and D(G) be the distance matrix of G. Suppose that λ1(D)⩾λ2(D)⩾⋯⩾λn(D) are the D-eigenvalues of G. In this paper, we characterize all connected graphs with λn(D)=-2. Furthermore, we characterize all connected graphs of diameter 2 with exactly three D-eigenvalues when λ1(D) is not an integer. We also conjecture that the complete k-partite graph is determined by its D-spectrum.

Abstract:Diophantine tuples are of ancient and modern interest, with a huge literature. In this paper we study Diophantine graphs, i.e., finite graphs whose vertices are distinct positive integers, and two vertices are linked by an edge if and only if their product increased by one is a square. We provide various results for Diophantine graphs, including extendability properties, lower- and upper bounds for the maximum number of edges and chromatic numbers.

Abstract:Let G be a connected graph with order n and D (G) be the distance matrix of G. Suppose that lambda(1)(D) >= lambda(2)(D) >= ... >= lambda(n)(D) are the D-eigenvalue of G. In this paper, we show that lambda(n-1) (D(G)) <= -1 if n >= 4 and lambda(n-2) (D(G)) <= -1 if n >= 7. Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected graph of order $n$ with diameter $d$. Remoteness $\rho$ of $G$ is the maximum average distance from a vertex to all others and $\partial_1\geq\cdots\geq \partial_n$ are the distance eigenvalues of $G$. In \cite{AH}, Aouchiche and Hansen conjectured that $\rho+\partial_3>0$ when $d\geq 3$ and $\rho+\partial_{\lfloor\frac{7d}{8}\rfloor}>0.$ In this paper, we confirm these two conjectures. Furthermore, we give lower bounds on $\partial_n+\rho$ and $\partial_1-\rho$ when $G\ncong K_n$ and the extremal graphs are characterized.

Abstract:For a simple graph $G$, the $2$-distance graph, $D_2(G)$, is a graph with the vertex set $V(G)$ and two vertices are adjacent if and only if their distance is $2$ in the graph $G$. In this paper, for graphs $G$ with diameter 2, we show that $diam(D_2(G))$ can be any integer $t\geqslant2$. For graphs $G$ with $diam(G)\geqslant3$, we prove that $\frac{1}{2}diam(G)\leqslant diam(D_2(G))$ and this inequality is sharp. Also, for $diam(G)=3$, we prove that $diam(D_2(G))\leqslant5$ and this inequality is sharp.

Abstract:Let a1,a2,…,an and b1,b2,…,bn be integers with 0⩽ai⩽bi for i=1,2,…,n. The purpose of this note is to give a good characterization for the existence of a simple graph G with vertices v1,v2,…,vn such that ai⩽dG(vi)⩽bi for i=1,2,…,n. This solves a research problem posed by Niessen and generalizes an Erdős–Gallai theorem.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected graph on $n$ vertices with adjacency matrix $A_G$. Associated to $G$ is a polynomial $d_G(x_1,\dots, x_n)$ of degree $n$ in $n$ variables, obtained as the determinant of the matrix $M_G(x_1,\dots,x_n)$, where $M_G={\rm Diag}(x_1,\dots,x_n)-A_G$. We investigate in this article the set $V_{d_G}(r)$ of non-negative values taken by this polynomial when $x_1, \dots, x_n \geq r \geq 1$. We show that $V_{d_G}(1) = {\mathbb Z}_{\geq 0}$. We show that for a large class of graphs one also has $V_{d_G}(2) = {\mathbb Z}_{\geq 0}$. When $V_{d_G}(2) \neq {\mathbb Z}_{\geq 0}$, we show that for many graphs $V_{d_G}(2) $ is dense in $ {\mathbb Z}_{\geq 0}$. We give numerical evidence that in many cases, the complement of $V_{d_G}(2) $ in $ {\mathbb Z}_{\geq 0}$ might in fact be finite. As a byproduct of our results, we show that every graph can be endowed with an arithmetical structure whose associated group is trivial.

On combinatorial structure and algebraic characterizations of distance-regular digraphs

Abstract:Let $\Gamma=\Gamma(A)$ denote a simple strongly connected digraph with vertex set $X$, diameter $D$, and let $\{A_0,A:=A_1,A_2,\ldots,A_D\}$ denote the set of distance-$i$ matrices of $\Gamma$. Let $\{R_i\}_{i=0}^D$ denote a partition of $X\times X$, where $R_i=\{(x,y)\in X\times X\mid (A_i)_{xy}=1\}$ $(0\le i\le D)$. The digraph $\Gamma$ is distance-regular if and only if $(X,\{R_i\}_{i=0}^D)$ is a commutative association scheme. In this paper, we describe the combinatorial structure of $\Gamma$ in the sense of equitable partition, and from it we derive several new algebraic characterizations of such a graph, including the spectral excess theorem for distance-regular digraph. Along the way, we also rediscover all well-known algebraic characterizations of such graphs.

Abstract:A graph $\Gamma$ is said to be distance-balanced if for any edge $uv$ of $\Gamma$, the number of vertices closer to $u$ than to $v$ is equal to the number of vertices closer to $v$ than to $u$, and it is called nicely distance-balanced if in addition this number is independent of the chosen edge $uv$. A graph $\Gamma$ is said to be strongly distance-balanced if for any edge $uv$ of $\Gamma$ and any integer $k$, the number of vertices at distance $k$ from $u$ and at distance $k+1$ from $v$ is equal to the number of vertices at distance $k+1$ from $u$ and at distance $k$ from $v$. In this paper we answer an open problem posed by Kutnar and Miklavič [European J. Combin. 39 (2014), 57-67] by constructing several infinite families of nonbipartite nicely distance-balanced graphs which are not strongly distance-balanced. We disprove a conjecture regarding characterization of strongly distance-balanced graphs posed by Balakrishnan et al. [European J. Combin. 30 (2009), 1048-1053] by providing infinitely many counterexamples, and answer an open question posed by Kutnar et al. in [Discrete Math. 306 (2006), 1881-1894] regarding existence of semisymmetric distance-balanced graphs which are not strongly distance-balanced by providing an infinite family of such examples. We also show that for a graph $\Gamma$ with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges it can be checked in $O(mn)$ time if $\Gamma$ is strongly-distance balanced and if $\Gamma$ is nicely distance-balanced.

Abstract:For any positive definite rational quadratic form $q$ of $n$ variables let $G(\mathbb{Q}^n, q)$ denote the graph with vertices $\mathbb{Q}^n$ and $x, y \in \mathbb{Q}^n$ connected iff $q(x - y) = 1$. This notion generalises standard Euclidean distance graphs. In this article we study these graphs and show how to find the exact value of clique number of the $G(\mathbb{Q}^n, q)$. We also prove rational analogue of the Beckman--Quarles theorem that any unit-preserving mapping of $\mathbb{Q}^n$ is an isometry.

Abstract:A family of subsets $\mathcal{F}$ is intersecting if $A \cap B \neq \emptyset$ for any $A, B \in \mathcal{F}$. In this paper, we show that for given integers $k > d \ge 2$ and $n \ge 2k+2d-3$, and any intersecting family $\mathcal{F}$ of $k$-subsets of $\{1, \cdots, n\}$, there exists a $d$-subset of $[n]$ contained in at most $\binom{n-d-1}{k-d-1}$ subsets of $\mathcal{F}$. This result, proved using spectral graph theory, gives a $d$-degree generalization of the celebrated Erdős-Ko-Rado Theorem, improving a theorem of Kupavskii.
