Abstract:We prove that the incomparability orthoset of a finite poset is Dacey if and only if the poset is N-free. We give a characterization of finite posets with compatible incomparability orthosets.

Abstract:An orthogonality space is a set equipped with a symmetric, irreflexive relation called orthogonality. Every orthogonality space has an associated complete ortholattice, called the logic of the orthogonality space. To every poset, we associate an orthogonality space consisting of proper quotients (that means, nonsingleton closed intervals), equipped with a certain orthogonality relation. We prove that a finite bounded poset is a lattice if and only if the logic of its orthogonality space is an orthomodular lattice. We prove that that a bounded poset is a chain if and only if the logic of the associated orthogonality space is a Boolean algebra.

Abstract:Aharoni and Korman (Order 9 (1992) 245--253) have conjectured that every ordered set without infinite antichains possesses a chain and a partition into antichains so that each part intersects the chain. The conjecture is verified for posets whose incomparability graph is locally finite. It follows that the conjecture is true for $(3 + 1)$-free posets with no infinite antichains.

Abstract:We show that every finite poset is isomorphic to a saturated subset of the spectrum of a Noetherian unique factorization domain. In addition, we show that every finite poset is isomorphic to a saturated subset of the spectrum of a quasi-excellent domain.

Abstract:Given a symmetric monoidal category $C$ with product $\sqcup$, where the neutral element for the product is an initial object, we consider the poset of $\sqcup$-complemented subobjects of a given object $X$. When this poset has finite height, we define decompositions and partial decompositions of $X$ which are coherent with $\sqcup$, and order them by refinement. From these posets, we define complexes of frames and partial bases, augmented Bergman complexes and related ordered versions. We propose a unified approach to the study of their combinatorics and homotopy type, establishing various properties and relations between them. Via explicit homotopy formulas, we will be able to transfer structural properties, such as Cohen-Macaulayness.

Abstract:The classical way to study a finite poset (X, ≤ ) using topology is by means of the simplicial complex ΔX of its nonempty chains. There is also an alternative approach, regarding X as a finite topological space. In this article we introduce new constructions for studying X topologically: inspired by a classical paper of Dowker (Ann Math 56:84–95, 1952), we define the simplicial complexes KX and LX associated to the relation ≤. In many cases these polyhedra have the same homotopy type as the order complex ΔX. We give a complete characterization of the simplicial complexes that are the K or L-complexes of some finite poset and prove that KX and LX are topologically equivalent to the smaller complexes K′X, L′X induced by the relation <. More precisely, we prove that KX (resp. LX) simplicially collapses to K′X (resp. L′X). The paper concludes with a result that relates the K-complexes of two posets X, Y with closed relations R ⊂ X × Y.
A characterization of permutability of 2-uniform tolerances on posets

Abstract:Tolerance relations were investigated by several authors in various algebraic structures, see e.g. the monograph by I. Chajda. Recently G. Czédli studied so-called 2-uniform tolerances on lattices, i.e. tolerances that are compatible with the lattice operations and whose blocks are of cardinality 2. He showed that two such tolerances on a lattice containing no infinite chain permute if and only if they are amicable (a concept introduced in his paper). We extend this study to tolerances on posets. Since in posets we have no lattice operations, we must modify the notion of amicability. We modified it in such a way that in case of lattices it coincides with the original definition. With this new definition we can prove that two tolerances on a poset containing no infinite chain permute if and only if they are amicable in the new sense.

Adjointness of generalized Sasaki operations in posets

Abstract:The Sasaki projection and its dual were introduced as a mapping from the lattice of closed subspaces of a Hilbert space onto one of its segments. In a previous paper the authors showed that the Sasaki operations induced by the Sasaki projection and its dual form an adjoint pair in every orthomodular lattice. Later on the authors described large classes of algebras in which Sasaki operations can be defined and form an adjoint pair. The aim of the present paper is to extend these investigations to bounded posets with a unary operation. We introduce the so-called generalized Sasaki projection and its dual as well as the so-called generalized Sasaki operations induced by them. When treating these projections and operations we consider only so-called saturated posets, i.e. posets having the property that above any lower bound of two elements there is at least one maximal lower bound and below any upper bound of two elements there is at least one minimal upper bound. We prove that the generalized Sasaki operations are well-defined if and only if the poset in question is orthogonal. We characterize adjointness of the generalized Sasaki operations in different ways and show that adjointness is possible only if the unary operation is a complementation. Finally, we prove that in every saturated orthomodular poset the generalized Sasaki operations form an adjoint pair.

Abstract:We prove in a unifying way several equivalent descriptions of Koszul rings, some of which being well known in the literature. Most of them are stated in terms of coring theoretical properties of $\Tor_n^A(R,R)$. As an application of these characterizations we investigate the Koszulity of the incidence rings for finite graded posets. Based on these results, we describe an algorithm to produce new classes of Koszul posets (i.e. graded posets whose incidence rings are Koszul). Specific examples of Koszul posets are included.

Abstract:We show that the $f$-vector of Galashin's poset associahedron $\mathscr A(P)$ only depends on the comparability graph of $P$. In particular, this allows us to produce a family of polytopes with the same $f$-vectors as permutohedra, but that are not combinatorially equivalent to permutohedra.

Abstract:We introduce new cardinal invariants of a poset, called the comparability number and the incomparability number. We determine their value for well-known posets, such as $\omega^\omega$, $\mathcal{P}(\omega)/\mathrm{fin}$, the Turing degrees $\mathcal{D}$, the quotient algebra $\mathsf{Borel}(2^\omega)/\mathsf{null}$, the ideals $\mathsf{meager}$ and $\mathsf{null}$. Moreover, we consider these invariants for the Rudin-Keisler ordering of the nonprincipal ultrafilters on $\omega$. We also consider these invariants for ideals on $\omega$ and on $\omega_1$.

Abstract:We describe four natural operad structures on the linear species of finite posets. The three last ones are set-theoretical and can be seen as a simplified version of the first, the same way the NAP operad behaves with respect to the pre-Lie operad. Moreover the two first ones are isomorphic.

Abstract:Aharoni and Korman (1992) [3] conjectured that every ordered set with no infinite antichains possesses a chain and a partition into antichains so that each part intersects the chain. The conjecture is verified for posets whose incomparability graph is locally finite. It follows that the conjecture is true for (3+1) -free posets with no infinite antichains. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a P4 -free graph to be a cograph. This allows us to obtain a simple proof of the fact that finite P4 -free graphs are finite cographs. We also prove that N -free chain complete posets and N -free posets with no infinite antichains are series-parallel. As a consequence, we obtain that the conjecture is true for N -free posets with no infinite antichain.

Abstract:Consider the noncrossing set partitions of an $n$-element set which either do not contain the block $\{n-1,n\}$, or which do not contain the singleton block $\{n\}$ whenever $1$ and $n-1$ are in the same block. In this article we study the subposet of the noncrossing partition lattice induced by these elements, and show that it is a supersolvable lattice, and therefore lexicographically shellable. We give a combinatorial model for the NBB bases of this lattice and derive an explicit formula for the value of its Möbius function between least and greatest element. This work is motivated by a recent article by M. Bruce, M. Dougherty, M. Hlavacek, R. Kudo, and I. Nicolas, in which they introduce a subposet of the noncrossing partition lattice that is determined by parking functions with certain forbidden entries. In particular, they conjecture that the resulting poset always has a contractible order complex. We prove this conjecture by embedding their poset into ours, and showing that it inherits the lexicographic shellability.

The finite Friedman-Stanley jumps: generic dichotomies for Borel homomorphisms

Abstract:Fix $n=1,2,3,\dots$ or $n=\omega$. We prove a dichotomy for Borel homomorphisms from the $n$-th Friedman-Stanley jump $=^{+n}$ to an equivalence relation $E$ which is classifiable by countable structures: if there is no reduction from $=^{+n}$ to $E$, then in fact all Borel homomorphisms are very far from a reduction. For this we use a different presentation of $=^{+n}$, equivalent up to Borel bi-reducibility, which is susceptible to Baire-category techniques. This dichotomy is seen as a method for proving positive Borel reducibility results from $=^{+n}$. As corollaries we prove: (1) for $n\leq\omega$, $=^{+n}$ is in the spectrum of the meager ideal. This extends a result of Kanovei, Sabok, and Zapletal for $n=1$; (2) $=^{+\omega}$ is a regular equivalence relation. This answers positively a question of Clemens; (3) for $n<\omega$, the equivalence relations, classifiable by countable structures, which do not Borel reduce $=^{+n}$ are closed under countable products. This extends a result of Kanovei, Sabok, and Zapletal for $n=1$.

Abstract:We say that a poset $(Q,\le_{Q})$ contains an induced copy of a poset $(P,\le_P)$, if there is an injective function $\phi\colon P\to Q$ such that for every two $X,Y\in P$, $X\le_P Y$ if and only if $\phi(X)\le_Q \phi(Y)$. Given a fixed $2$-coloring $c$ of a poset $P$, the poset Erdős-Hajnal number of this colored poset is the minimum integer $N$ such that every $2$-coloring of the Boolean lattice $Q_N$ contains an induced copy of $P$ colored as in $c$, or a monochromatic induced copy of $Q_n$. We present bounds on the poset Erdős-Hajnal number of general colored posets, antichains, chains, and small Boolean lattices. Let the poset Ramsey number $R(Q_n,Q_n)$ be the minimal $N$ such that every $2$-coloring of $Q_N$ contains a monochromatic induced copy of $Q_n$. As a corollary, we show that $R(Q_n,Q_n)> 2.24n$, improving on the best known lower bound $2n+1$ by Cox and Stolee.

Abstract:Let n be a positive integer with n >= 2 and [n] :-= {1, 2, ... ,n}. An m-partial injective map of [n] is a pair (A, f) where A is an m-subset of [n] and f : A -> [n] is an injective map. Let P = L boolean OR {1}, where L is the set of all the partial injective maps of [n]. Partially ordered P by ordinary or reverse inclusion, two families of finite posets are obtained. This article proves that these posets are atomic lattices, discusses their geometricity, and computes their characteristic polynomials.

Abstract:On an arbitrary meet-semilattice S with 0 we define an orthogonality relation and investigate the lattice Cl(S) of all subsets of S closed under this orthogonality. We show that if S is atomic then Cl(S) is a complete atomic Boolean algebra. If S is a pseudocomplemented lattice, this orthogonality relation can be defined by means of the pseudocomplementation. Finally, we show that if S is a complete pseudocomplemented lattice then Cl(S) is a complete Boolean algebra. For pseudocomplemented posets a similar result holds if the subset of pseudocomplements forms a complete lattice satisfying a certain compatibility condition.

Abstract:We call a poset factorable if its characteristic polynomial has all positive integer roots. Inspired by inductive and divisional freeness of a central hyperplane arrangement, we introduce and study the notion of inductive posets and their superclass of divisional posets. It then motivates us to define the so-called inductive and divisional abelian (Lie group) arrangements, whose posets of layers serve as the main examples of our posets. Our first main result is that every divisional poset is factorable. Our second main result shows that the class of inductive posets contains strictly supersolvable posets, the notion recently introduced due to Bibby and Delucchi (2022). This result can be regarded as an extension of a classical result due to Jambu and Terao (1984), which asserts that every supersolvable hyperplane arrangement is inductively free. Our third main result is an application to toric arrangements, which states that the toric arrangement defined by an arbitrary ideal of a root system of type $A$, $B$ or $C$ with respect to the root lattice is inductive.
