Abstract:We show that the $f$-vector of Galashin's poset associahedron $\mathscr A(P)$ only depends on the comparability graph of $P$. In particular, this allows us to produce a family of polytopes with the same $f$-vectors as permutohedra, but that are not combinatorially equivalent to permutohedra.

Abstract:For any finite connected poset $P$, Galashin introduced a simple convex $(|P|-2)$-dimensional polytope $\mathscr{A}(P)$ called the poset associahedron. For a certain family of posets, whose poset associahedra interpolate between the classical permutohedron and associahedron, we give a simple combinatorial interpretation of the $h$-vector. Our interpretation relates to the theory of stack-sorting of permutations. It also allows us to prove real-rootedness of some of their $h$-polynomials.

Abstract:The order and chain polytopes are two 0/1-polytopes constructed from a finite poset. In this paper, we study the $f$-vectors of these polytopes. We investigate how the order and chain polytopes behave under disjoint unions and ordinal sums of posets, and how the $f$-vectors of these polytopes are expressed in terms of $f$-vectors of smaller polytopes. Our focus is on comparing the $f$-vectors of the order and chain polytope built from the same poset. In our main theorem we prove that for a family of posets built inductively by taking disjoint unions and ordinal sums of posets, for any poset $\mathcal{P}$ in this family the $f$-vector of the order polytope of $\mathcal{P}$ is component-wise at most the $f$-vector of the chain polytope of $\mathcal{P}$.

Abstract:We show that there are $f$-vectors of balanced simplicial complexes giving a source of simplicial complexes exhibiting a Boolean decomposition similar to a geometric Lefschetz decomposition. The objects we are working with are $h$-vectors of flag spheres and balanced simplicial complexes whose $f$-vectors are equal to them. This builds on work of Nevo--Petersen--Tenner on a conjecture of Nevo--Petersen that the gamma vector of an odd-dimensional flag sphere is the $f$-vector of a balanced simplicial complex (which was shown for barycentric subdivisions by Nevo--Petersen--Tenner). We can connect our decomposition to positivity questions on reciprocal/palindromic polynomials associated to flag spheres and geometric questions motivating them. In addition, we note that the degrees in the Lefschetz-like decomposition are not halved unlike the usual $h$-vector setting.

Abstract:The second author introduced 2-associahedra as a tool for investigating functoriality properties of Fukaya categories, and he conjectured that they could be realized as face posets of convex polytopes. We introduce a family of posets called categorical $n$-associahedra, which naturally extend the second author's 2-associahedra and the classical associahedra. Categorical $n$-associahedra give a combinatorial model for the poset of strata of a compactified real moduli space of a tree arrangement of affine coordinate subspaces. We construct a family of complete polyhedral fans, called velocity fans, whose coordinates encode the relative velocities of pairs of colliding coordinate subspaces, and whose face posets are the categorical $n$-associahedra. In particular, this gives the first fan realization of 2-associahedra. In the case of the classical associahedron, the velocity fan specializes to the normal fan of Loday's realization of the associahedron. For proving that the velocity fan is a fan, we first construct a cone complex of metric $n$-bracketings and then exhibit a piecewise-linear isomorphism from this complex to the velocity fan. We demonstrate that the velocity fan, which is not simplicial, admits a canonical smooth flag triangulation on the same set of rays, and we describe a second, finer triangulation which provides a new extension of the braid arrangement. We describe piecewise-unimodular maps on the velocity fan such that the image of each cone is a union of cones in the braid arrangement, and we highlight a connection to the theory of building sets and nestohedra. We explore the local iterated fiber product structure of categorical $n$-associahedra and the extent to which this structure is realized by the velocity fan. For the class of concentrated $n$-associahedra we exhibit generalized permutahedra having velocity fans as their normal fans.

Abstract:For any finite connected poset $P$, Galashin introduced a simple convex $(|P|-2)$-dimensional polytope $\mathscr{A}(P)$ called the poset associahedron. Let $P$ be a poset with a proper autonomous subposet $S$ that is a chain of size $n$. For $1\leq i \leq n$, let $P_i$ be the poset obtained from $P$ by replacing $S$ by an antichain of size $i$. We show that the $h$-polynomial of $\mathscr{A}(P)$ can be written in terms of the $h$-polynomials of $\mathscr{A}(P_i)$ and type B Narayana polynomials. We then use the identity to deduce several identities involving Narayana polynomials, Eulerian polynomials, and stack-sorting preimages.

Symmetrizing polytopes and posets

Abstract:Motivated by the authors' work on permuto-associahedra, which can be considered as a symmetrization of the associahedron using the symmetric group, we introduce and study the $\mathfrak{G}$-symmetrization of an arbitrary polytope $P$ for any reflection group $\mathfrak{G}$. We show that the combinatorics, and moreover, the normal fan of such a symmetrization can be recovered from its refined fundamental fan, a decorated poset describing how the normal fan of $P$ subdivides the fundamental chamber associated to the reflection group $\mathfrak{G}$. One important application of our results is providing a way to approach the realization problem of a $\mathfrak{G}$-symmetric poset F, that is, the problem of constructing a polytope whose face poset is F. Instead of working with the original poset F, we look at its dual poset T (which is $\mathfrak{G}$-symmetric as well) and focus on a generating subposet Z of T, and reduce the problem to realizing Z as a refined fundamental fan.

Abstract:Most applications of the hard Lefschetz theorem related to combinatorial properties of simplicial complexes involve their $h$-vectors. In the context of positivity properties involving $h$-vectors of flag spheres, $f$-vectors with a Lefschetz-type ``Boolean'' decomposition have been studied. In this note, we explore families of flag simplicial complexes where we can see this Boolean decomposition explicitly in terms of transformations connecting different simplicial complexes in this family. Note that we will take complexes in a given dimension to be PL homeomorphic to each other. In particular, the existence of a Boolean decomposition patched from local parts can be phrased in terms of a certain map formally satisfying an analogue of the hard Lefschetz theorem. The map is given by the composition of a double suspension with a ``net single edge subdivision''. Here, the former contributes to the Boolean part and the latter contributes to the disjoint non-Boolean part. The fact that the simplicial complex with the given $f$-vector can be taken to be balanced suggests algebraic versions of maps connected to these decompositions.

Posets for $F$-polynomials in cluster algebras from surfaces

Abstract:We prove a simple formula for arbitrary cluster variables in the marked surfaces model. As part of the formula, we associate a labeled poset to each tagged arc, such that the associated $F$-polynomial is a weighted sum of order ideals. Each element of the poset has a weight, and the weight of an ideal is the product of the weights of the elements of the ideal. In the unpunctured case, the weight on each element is a single $\hat{y}_i$, in the usual sense of principal coefficients. In the presence of punctures, some elements may have weights of the form $\hat{y}_i/\hat{y}_j$. Our search for such a formula was inspired by the Fundamental Theorem of Finite Distributive Lattices combined with work of Gregg Musiker, Ralf Schiffler, and Lauren Williams that, in some cases, organized the terms of the $F$-polynomial into a distributive lattice. The proof consists of a simple and poset-theoretically natural argument in a special case, followed by a hyperbolic geometry argument using a cover of the surface to prove the general case.

The conjecture is verified for posets whose incomparability graph is locally finite. It follows that the conjecture is true for $(3 + 1)$-free posets with no infinite antichains.

Abstract:Generalized permutahedra are a family of polytopes with a rich combinatorial structure and strong connections to optimization. We prove that they are the universal family of polyhedra with a certain Hopf algebraic structure. Their antipode is remarkably simple: the antipode of a polytope is the alternating sum of its faces. Our construction provides a unifying framework to organize numerous combinatorial structures, including graphs, matroids, posets, set partitions, linear graphs, hypergraphs, simplicial complexes, building sets, and simple graphs. We highlight three applications: 1. We obtain uniform proofs of numerous old and new results about the Hopf algebraic and combinatorial structures of these families. In particular, we give the optimal formula for the antipode of graphs, posets, matroids, hypergraphs, and building sets, and we answer questions of Humpert--Martin and Rota. 2. We show that the reciprocity theorems of Stanley and Billera--Jia--Reiner on chromatic polynomials of graphs, order polynomials of posets, and BJR-polynomials of matroids are instances of the same reciprocity theorem for generalized permutahedra. 3. We explain why the formulas for the multiplicative and compositional inverses of power series are governed by the face structure of permutahedra and associahedra, respectively, answering a question of Loday. Along the way, we offer a combinatorial user's guide to Hopf monoids.

Abstract:Interior and exterior angle vectors of polytopes capture curvature information at faces of all dimensions and can be seen as metric variants of $f$-vectors. In this context, Gram's relation takes the place of the Euler--Poincaré relation as the unique linear relation among interior angles. We show the existence and uniqueness of Euler--Poincaré-type relations for generalized angle vectors by building a bridge to the algebraic combinatorics of geometric lattices, generalizing work of Klivans--Swartz. We introduce flag-angles of polytopes as a geometric counterpart to flag-$f$-vectors. Flag-angles generalize the angle deficiencies of Descartes--Shephard, Grassmann angles, and spherical intrinsic volumes. Using the machinery of incidence algebras, we relate flag-angles of zonotopes to flag-$f$-vectors of graded posets. This allows us to determine the linear relations satisfied by interior/exterior flag-angle vectors.

On the $f$-vectors of flow polytopes for the complete graph

Abstract:The Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytope ($CRY_n$) of order $n$ is a face of the Birkhoff polytope of doubly stochastic matrices that is also a flow polytope of the directed complete graph $K_{n+1}$ with netflow $(1,0,0, \ldots , 0, -1)$. The volume and lattice points of this polytope have been actively studied, however its face structure has received less attention. We give generating functions and explicit formulas for computing the $f$-vector by using Hille's (2003) result bijecting faces of a flow polytope to certain graphs, as well as Andresen-Kjeldsen's (1976) result that enumerates certain subgraphs of the directed complete graph. We extend our results to flow polytopes of the complete graph having arbitrary (non-negative) netflow vectors and recover the $f$-vector of the Tesler polytope of Mészáros--Morales--Rhoades (2017).

Combinatorics of Essential Sets for Positroids

Abstract:Positroids are a family of matroids introduced by Postnikov in the study of non-negative Grassmannians. Postnikov identified several combinatorial objects in bijections with positroids, among which are bounded affine permutations. On the other hand, the notion of essential sets, introduced for permutations by Fulton, was used by Knutson in the study of the special family of interval rank positroids. We generalize Fulton's essential sets to bounded affine permutations. The bijection of the latter with positroids, allows study of the relationship between them. From the point of view of positroids, essential sets are maximally dependent cyclic interval. We define connected essential sets and prove that they give a facet description of the positroid polytope, as well as equations defining the positroid variety. We define a subset of essential sets, called core, which contains minimal rank conditions to uniquely recover a positroid. We provide an algorithm to retrieve the positroid satisfying the rank conditions in the core or any compatible rank condition on cyclic intervals.

A canonical realization of the alt $ν$-associahedron

Abstract:Given a lattice path $\nu$, the alt $\nu$-Tamari lattice is a partial order recently introduced by Ceballos and Chenevière, which generalizes the $\nu$-Tamari lattice and the $\nu$-Dyck lattice. All these posets are defined on the set of lattice paths that lie weakly above $\nu$, and posses a rich combinatorial structure. In this paper, we study the geometric structure of these posets. We show that their Hasse diagram is the edge graph of a polytopal complex induced by a tropical hyperplane arrangement, which we call the alt $\nu$-associahedron. This generalizes the realization of $\nu$-associahedra by Ceballos, Padrol and Sarmiento. Our approach leads to an elegant construction, in terms of areas below lattice paths, which we call the canonical realization. Surprisingly, in the case of the classical associahedron, our canonical realization magically recovers Loday's ubiquitous realization, via a simple affine transformation.

Abstract:Motivated by various developments in algebraic combinatorics and its applications, we investigate here the fine structure of a fundamental but little known theorem, the Gerstenhaber and Schack cohomology comparison theorem.The theorem classically asserts that there is a cochain equivalence between the usual singular cochain complex of a simplicial complex and the relative Hochschild complex of its incidence algebra, and a quasi-isomorphism with the standard Hochschild complex. Here, we will be mostly interested in its application to arbitrary posets (or, equivalently, finite topologies) and their incidence algebras. We construct various structures, classical and new, on the above two complexes: cosimplicial, differential graded algebra, operadic and brace algebra structures and show that the comparison theorem preserves all of them. These results provide non standard insights on links between the theory of posets, incidence algebras, endomorphism operads and finite and combinatorial topology. By non standard, we refer here to the use of relative versions of Hochschild complexes and operads.
