Abstract:In this article we propose a conception of mixed limits of functional spaces as the case, when the upper limit (projective limit of inductive limits) and the lower limit (inductive limit of projective limits) coincide as topological spaces, which are generalization of inductive and projective limits of functional spaces. We show a cases where these mixed limits are naturally obtained as the limit spaces of non-commutative $L_p$-type spaces associated with the sequence of operators. Also, we obtain results on the properties of limit spaces, we show that limit spaces of Banach algebras are (LF)-spaces, if they converge.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a Banach space and $F: [0, 1] \rightarrow 2^{X} \setminus \{ \varnothing \}$ be a bounded multifunction. We study properties of the set $I(F)$ of limits in Hausdorff distance of Riemann integral sums of $F$. The main results are: (1) $I(F)$ is convex in the case of finite-dimensional $X$; (2) $I(F) = I(\operatorname{conv} F)$ in B-convex spaces or for compact-valued multifunctions; (3) $I(F)$ consists of convex sets whenever $X$ is B-convex; (4) $I(F)$ is star-shaped (thus non-empty) for compact-valued multifunctions in separable spaces. (5) For each infinite-dimensional Banach space there is a bounded multifunction with empty $I(F)$.

Abstract:If $K$ is a compact Hausdorff space so that the Banach lattice $C(K)$ is isometrically lattice isomorphic to a dual of some Banach lattice, then $C(K)$ can be decomposed as the $\ell^\infty$-direct sum of the carriers of a maximal singular family of order continuous functionals on $C(K)$. In order to generalise this result to the vector lattice $C(X)$ of continuous, real valued functions on a realcompact space $X$, we consider direct and inverse limits in suitable categories of vector lattices. We develop a duality theory for such limits and apply this theory to show that $C(X)$ is lattice isomorphic to the order dual of some vector lattice $F$ if and only if $C(X)$ can be decomposed as the inverse limit of the carriers of all order continuous functionals on $C(X)$. In fact, we obtain a more general result: A Dedekind complete vector lattice $E$ is perfect if and only if it is lattice isomorphic to the inverse limit of the carriers of a suitable family of order continuous functionals on $E$. A number of other applications are presented, including a decomposition theorem for order dual spaces in terms of spaces of Radon measures.

Abstract:In this paper, we first present some sufficient conditions for the upper semicontinuity and/or the continuity of the Bregman farthest-point map $Q_C^g$ and the relative farthest-point map $S_C^g$ for a nonempty $D$-maximally approximately compact subset $C$ of a Banach space $X$. We next present certain sufficient conditions as well as equivalent conditions for a Klee set to be singleton in a Banach space $X$. Our results extend and/or improve the corresponding ones of [Bauschke, et al., J. Approx. Theory, 158 (2009), pp. 170-183] to infinite dimensional spaces.
Quotient-convergence of Submodular Setfunctions

Abstract:We introduce the concept of quotient-convergence for sequences of submodular set functions, providing, among others, a new framework for the study of convergence of matroids through their rank functions. Extending the limit theory of bounded degree graphs, which analyzes graph sequences via neighborhood sampling, we address the challenge posed by the absence of a neighborhood concept in matroids. We show that any bounded set function can be approximated by a sequence of finite set functions that quotient-converges to it. In addition, we explicitly construct such sequences for increasing, submodular, and upper continuous set functions, and prove the completeness of the space under quotient-convergence.

Abstract:We introduce and study the class of almost limited sets in Banach lattices, that is, sets on which every disjoint weak⁎ null sequence of functionals converges uniformly to zero. It is established that a Banach lattice has order continuous norm if and only if almost limited sets and L-weakly compact sets coincide. In particular, in terms of almost Dunford–Pettis operators into c0, we give an operator characterization of those σ-Dedekind complete Banach lattices whose relatively weakly compact sets are almost limited, that is, for a σ-Dedekind Banach lattice E, every relatively weakly compact set in E is almost limited if and only if every continuous linear operator T:E→c0 is an almost Dunford–Pettis operator.

Abstract:The notion of decomposable operators acting between distinct -direct integrals of Banach spaces is introduced. We show that these operators generalize the composition operator in the sense that a binary relation replaces a mapping. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the boundedness of those operators are the main results of the paper.

Abstract:A function f from reals to reals (f:R->R) is almost continuous (in the sense of Stallings) iff every open set in the plane which contains the graph of f contains the graph of a continuous function. Natkaniec showed that for any family F of continuum many real functions there exists g:R->R such that f+g is almost continuous for every f in F. Let AA be the smallest cardinality of a family F of real functions for which there is no g:R->R with the property that f+g is almost continuous for every f in F. Thus Natkaniec showed that AA is strictly greater than the continuum. He asked if anything more could be said. We show that the cofinality of AA is greater than the continuum, c. Moreover, we show that it is pretty much all that can be said about AA in ZFC, by showing that AA can be equal to any regular cardinal between c^+ and 2^c (with 2^c arbitrarily large). We also show that AA = AD where AD is defined similarly to AA but for the class of Darboux functions. This solves another problem of Maliszewski and Natkaniec.

Abstract:We show that the disintegration operator on a complete separable metric space along a projection map, restricted to measures for which there is a unique continuous disintegration, is strongly Weihrauch equivalent to the limit operator Lim. When a measure does not have a unique continuous disintegration, we may still obtain a disintegration when some basis of continuity sets has the Vitali covering property with respect to the measure; the disintegration, however, may depend on the choice of sets. We show that, when the basis is computable, the resulting disintegration is strongly Weihrauch reducible to Lim, and further exhibit a single distribution realizing this upper bound.

A descriptive approach to higher derived limits

Abstract:We present a new aspect of the study of higher derived limits. More precisely, we introduce a complexity measure for the elements of higher derived limits over the directed set $\Omega$ of functions from $\mathbb{N}$ to $\mathbb{N}$ and prove that cocycles of this complexity are images of cochains of the roughly the same complexity. In the course of this work, we isolate a partition principle for powers of directed sets and show that whenever this principle holds, the corresponding derived limit $\mathrm{lim}^n$ is additive; vanishing results for this limit are the typical corollary. The formulation of this partition hypothesis synthesizes and clarifies several recent advances in this area.

Monotonic Decompositions of Submodular Set Functions

Abstract:Submodular set functions are undoubtedly among the most important building blocks of combinatorial optimization. Somewhat surprisingly, continuous counterparts of such functions have also appeared in an analytic line of research where they found applications in the theory of finitely additive measures, nonlinear integrals, and electric capacities. Recently, a number of connections between these two branches have been established, and the aim of this paper is to generalize further results on submodular set functions on finite sets to the analytic setting. We first extend the notion of duality of matroids to submodular set functions, and characterize the uniquely determined decomposition of a submodular set function into the sum of a nonnegaive charge and an increasing submodular set function in which the charge is maximal. Then, we describe basic properties of infinite-alternating set functions, a subclass of submodular set functions that serves as an analytic counterpart of coverage functions. By relaxing the monotonicity assumption in the definition, we introduce a new class of submodular functions with distinguished structural properties that includes, among others, weighted cut functions of graphs. We prove that, unlike general submodular set functions over an infinite domain, any infinite-alternating set function can be written as the sum of an increasing and a decreasing submodular function or as the difference of two increasing submodular functions, thus giving extension of results on monotonic decompositions in the finite case. Finally, motivated by its connections to graph parameters such as the maximum size of a cut and the maximum size of a fractional triangle packing, we study the structure of such decompositions for weighted cut functions of undirected graphs.

Abstract:We show that the lower limit of a sequence of maximal monotone operators on a reflexive Banach space is a representable monotone operator. As a consequence, we obtain that the variational sum of maximal monotone operators and the variational composition of a maximal monotone operator with a linear continuous operator are both representable monotone operators.

Abstract:Let~$\mathcal{A}$ be an almost disjoint family of subsets of an infinite set~$\Gamma$, and denote by~$X_{\mathcal{A}}$ the closed subspace of~$\ell_\infty(\Gamma)$ spanned by the indicator functions of intersections of finitely many sets in~$\mathcal{A}$. We show that if~$\mathcal{A}$ has cardinality greater than~$\Gamma$, then the closed subspace of~$X_{\mathcal{A}}$ spanned by the indicator functions of sets of the form $\bigcap_{j=1}^{n+1}A_j$, where $n\in\N$ and $A_1,\ldots,A_{n+1}\in\mathcal{A}$ are distinct, cannot be the kernel of any bounded operator \mbox{$X_{\mathcal{A}}\rightarrow \ell_{\infty}(\Gamma)$}. As a consequence, we deduce that the subspace \[ \bigl\{ x\in \ell_{\infty}(\Gamma) : \text{the set}\ \{\gamma \in \Gamma : \lvert x(\gamma)\rvert > \varepsilon \}\ \text{has cardinality smaller than}\ \Gamma\ \text{for every}\ \varepsilon>0\bigr\} \] of~$\ell_\infty(\Gamma)$ is not the kernel of any bounded operator on~$\ell_\infty(\Gamma)$; this generalises results of Kalton and of Pełczyński and Sudakov. We show that it is undecidable in \textsf{ZFC} whether every bounded operator on~$\ell_\infty^c(\omega_1)$ which vanishes on~$c_0(\omega_1)$ must vanish on a subspace of the form~$\ell_\infty^c(A)$ for some uncountable subset~$A$ of~$\omega_1$.
