Abstract:I was a student of Juris Hartmanis at Cornell in the late 1970's. He believed that there was great potential in studying restricted reductions. I describe here some of his influences on me and, in particular, how his insights concerning reductions helped me to prove that nondeterministic space is closed under complementation.

Abstract:Turing Award winner Juris Hartmanis introduced in 1959 lattices of subspaces of generalized partitions ("partitions of type n"; "geometries" if $n = 2$). Hartmanis states it is "an unsolved problem whether there are any incomplete lattice homomorphisms in" lattices of subspaces of geometries. (He continues, "[I]f so how can these geometries be characterized.") We give a positive answer to this question.

Abstract:Methodological reductionists practice ‘wannabe reductionism’. They claim that one should pursue reductionism, but never propose how. I integrate two strains in prior work to do so. Three kinds of activities are pursued as “reductionist”. “Successional reduction” and inter-level mechanistic explanation are legitimate and powerful strategies. Eliminativism is generally ill-conceived. Specific problem-solving heuristics for constructing inter-level mechanistic explanations show why and when they can provide powerful and fruitful tools and insights, but sometimes lead to erroneous results. I show how traditional metaphysical approaches fail to engage how science is done. The methods used do so, and support a pragmatic and non-eliminativist realism.

En Route to Reduction: Lorentzian Manifolds and Causal Sets

Abstract:I present aspects of causal set theory (a research programme in quantum gravity) as being en route to achieving a reduction of Lorentzian geometry to causal sets. I take reduction in philosophers' sense; and I argue that the prospects are good for there being a reduction of the type envisaged by Nagel. (I also discuss the prospects for the stronger functionalist variant of Nagelian reduction, that was formulated by Lewis.)

Abstract:In previous work, I described several examples combining reduction and emergence: where reduction is understood a la Ernest Nagel, and emergence is understood as behaviour or properties that are novel (by some salient standard). Here, my aim is again to reconcile reduction and emergence, for a case which is apparently more problematic than those I treated before: renormalization. Renormalization is a vast subject. So I confine myself to emphasizing how the modern approach to renormalization (initiated by Wilson and others between 1965 and 1975), when applied to quantum field theories, illustrates both Nagelian reduction and emergence. My main point is that the modern understanding of how renormalizability is a generic feature of quantum field theories at accessible energies gives us a conceptually unified family of Nagelian reductions. That is worth saying since philosophers tend to think of scientific explanation as only explaining an individual event, or perhaps a single law, or at most deducing one theory as a special case of another. Here we see a framework in which there is a space of theories endowed with enough structure that it provides a family of reductions.

Abstract:It has been argued that reduction procedures are closely connected to the question about identity of proofs and that accepting certain reductions would lead to a trivialization of identity of proofs in the sense that every derivation of the same conclusion would have to be identified. In this paper it will be shown that the question, which reductions we accept in our system, is not only important if we see them as generating a theory of proof identity but is also decisive for the more general question whether a proof has meaningful content. There are certain reductions which would not only force us to identify proofs of different arbitrary formulas but which would render derivations in a system allowing them meaningless. To exclude such cases, a minimal criterion is proposed which reductions have to fulfill to be acceptable.

Abstract:To study coisotropic reduction in the context of deformation quantization we introduce constraint manifolds and constraint algebras as the basic objects encoding the additional information needed to define a reduction. General properties of various categories of constraint objects and their compatiblity with reduction are examined. A constraint Serre-Swan theorem, identifying constraint vector bundles with certain finitely generated projective constraint modules, as well as a constraint symbol calculus are proved. After developing the general deformation theory of constraint algebras, including constraint Hochschild cohomology and constraint differential graded Lie algebras, the second constraint Hochschild cohomology for the constraint algebra of functions on a constraint flat space is computed.

Abstract:We study logical reduction (factorization) of relations into relations of lower arity by Boolean or relative products that come from applying conjunctions and existential quantifiers to predicates, i.e. by primitive positive formulas of predicate calculus. Our algebraic framework unifies natural joins and data dependencies of database theory and relational algebra of clone theory with the bond algebra of C.S. Peirce. We also offer new constructions of reductions, systematically study irreducible relations and reductions to them, and introduce a new characteristic of relations, ternarity, that measures their `complexity of relating' and allows to refine reduction results. In particular, we refine Peirce's controversial reduction thesis, and show that reducibility behavior is dramatically different on finite and infinite domains.

Abstract:Many Hilbert modules over the polynomial ring in m variables are essentially reductive, that is, have commutators which are compact. Arveson has raised the question of whether the closure of homogeneous ideals inherit this property and provided motivation to seek an affirmative answer. Positive results have been obtained by Arveson, Guo, Wang and the author. More recently, Guo and Wang extended the results to quasi-homogeneous ideals in two variables. Building on their techniques, in this note the author extends this result to Hilbert modules over certain Reinhardt domains such as ellipsoids in two variables and analyzes extending the result to the closure of quasi-homogeneous ideals in m variables when the zero variety has dimension one.

Abstract:We prove quantitative versions of Borel and Harish-Chandra's theorems on reduction theory for arithmetic groups. Firstly, we obtain polynomial bounds on the lengths of reduced integral vectors in any rational representation of a reductive group. Secondly, we obtain polynomial bounds in the construction of fundamental sets for arithmetic subgroups of reductive groups, as the latter vary in a real conjugacy class of subgroups of a fixed reductive group. Our results allow us to apply the Pila--Zannier strategy to the Zilber--Pink conjecture for the moduli space of principally polarised abelian surfaces. Building on our previous paper, we prove this conjecture under a Galois orbits hypothesis. Finally, we establish the Galois orbits hypothesis for points corresponding to abelian surfaces with quaternionic multiplication, under certain geometric conditions.

Abstract:In the seminal essay, "On the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in the physical sciences," physicist Eugene Wigner poses a fundamental philosophical question concerning the relationship between a physical system and our capacity to model its behavior with the symbolic language of mathematics. In this essay, I examine an ambitious 16th and 17th-century intellectual agenda from the perspective of Wigner's question, namely, what historian Paolo Rossi calls "the quest to create a universal language." While many elite thinkers pursued related ideas, the most inspiring and forceful was Gottfried Leibniz's effort to create a "universal calculus," a pictorial language which would transparently represent the entirety of human knowledge, as well as an associated symbolic calculus with which to model the behavior of physical systems and derive new truths. I suggest that a deeper understanding of why the efforts of Leibniz and others failed could shed light on Wigner's original question. I argue that the notion of reductionism is crucial to characterizing the failure of Leibniz's agenda, but that a decisive argument for the why the promises of this effort did not materialize is still lacking.

Abstract:We show performing general "0-brane reduction" along an arbitrary fixed direction in space–time and applied to the starting point of minimal, off-shell 4D, N = 1 irreducible supermultiplets, yields adinkras whose adjacency matrices are among some of the special cases proposed by Kuznetsova, Rojas and Toppan. However, these more general reductions also can lead to "Garden Algebra" structures beyond those described in their work. It is also shown that for light-like directions, reduction to the 0-brane breaks the equality in the number of fermions and bosons for dynamical theories. This implies that light-like reductions should be done instead to the space of 1-branes or equivalently to the worldsheet.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the parahoric reduction theory of formal connections (or Higgs fields) on a formal principal bundle with parahoric structures, which generalizes Babbitt-Varadarajan's result for the case without parahoric structures [5] and Boalch's result for the case of regular singularity [9]. As applications, we prove the equivalence between extrinsic definition and intrinsic definition of regular singularity and provide a criterion of relative regularity for formal connections, and also demonstrate a parahoric version of Frenkel-Zhu's Borel reduction theorem of formal connections [23].
On the reduction theory of $W^{*}$-algebras by Hilbert modules

Abstract:We deal with the reduction theory of a $W^*$-algebra $M$ along a $W^*$-subalgebra $Z$ of the centre of $M$. This is done by using Hilbert modules naturally constructed by suitable spatial representations of the abelian $W^*$-algebra $Z$. We start with an exhaustive investigation of such kind of Hilbert modules, which is also of self-contained interest. After explaining the notion of the reduction in this framework, we exhibit the reduction of the standard form of a $W^*$-algebra $M$ along any $W^*$-subalgebra of its centre, containing the unit of $M$. In a forthcoming paper, this result is applied to study the structure of the standard representation of the $W^*$-tensor product $M_1\ots_Z M_2$ of two $W^*$-algebras $M_1$ and $M_2$ over a common $W^*$-subalgebra $Z$ of the centres.

Abstract:We introduce two notions of effective reducibility for set-theoretical statements, based on computability with Ordinal Turing Machines (OTMs), one of which resembles Turing reducibility while the other is modelled after Weihrauch reducibility.
