Abstract:A 1-selection $f$ of a graph $G$ is a function $f: V(G)\rightarrow E(G)$ such that $f(v)$ is incident to $v$ for every vertex $v$. The 1-removed $G_f$ is the graph $(V(G),E(G)\setminus f[V(G)])$. The (1-)robust chromatic number $\chi_1(G)$ is the minimum of $\chi(G_f)$ over all 1-selections $f$ of $G$. We determine the robust chromatic number of complete multipartite graphs and Kneser graphs and prove tight lower and upper bounds on the robust chromatic number of chordal graphs and some of their extensively studied subclasses, with respect to their ordinary chromatic number.

Abstract:The chromatic index $\chi'(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest $k$ for which $G$ admits an edge $k$-coloring such that any two adjacent edges have distinct colors. The strong chromatic index $\chi'_s(G)$ of $G$ is the smallest $k$ such that $G$ has an edge $k$-coloring with the condition that any two edges at distance at most 2 receive distinct colors. A graph is 1-planar if it can be drawn in the plane so that each edge is crossed by at most one other edge. In this paper, we show that every graph $G$ with maximum average degree $\bar{d}(G)$ has $\chi'_{s}(G)\le (2\bar{d}(G)-1)\chi'(G)$. As a corollary, we prove that every 1-planar graph $G$ with maximum degree $\Delta$ has $\chi'_{\rm s}(G)\le 14\Delta$, which improves a result, due to Bensmail et al., which says that $\chi'_{\rm s}(G)\le 24\Delta$ if $\Delta\ge 56$.

Abstract:A 1-removed subgraph $G_f$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is obtained by $(i)$ selecting at most one edge $f(v)$ for each vertex $v\in V$, such that $v\in f(v)\in E$ (the mapping $f:V\to E \cup \{\varnothing\}$ is allowed to be non-injective), and $(ii)$ deleting all the selected edges $f(v)$ from the edge set $E$ of $G$. Proper vertex colorings of 1-removed subgraphs proved to be a useful tool for earlier research on some Turán-type problems. In this paper, we introduce a systematic investigation of the graph invariant 1-robust chromatic number, denoted as $\omega_1(G)$. This invariant is defined as the minimum chromatic number $\chi(G_f)$ among all 1-removed subgraphs $G_f$ of $G$. We also examine other standard graph invariants in a similar manner.

Odd-Sum Colorings of Planar Graphs

Abstract:A \emph{coloring} of a graph $G$ is a map $f:V(G)\to \mathbb{Z}^+$ such that $f(v)\ne f(w)$ for all $vw\in E(G)$. A coloring $f$ is an \emph{odd-sum} coloring if $\sum_{w\in N[v]}f(w)$ is odd, for each vertex $v\in V(G)$. The \emph{odd-sum chromatic number} of a graph $G$, denoted $\chi_{os}(G)$, is the minimum number of colors used (that is, the minimum size of the range) in an odd-sum coloring of $G$. Caro, Petruševski, and Škrekovski showed, among other results, that $\chi_{os}(G)$ is well-defined for every finite graph $G$ and, in fact, $\chi_{os}(G)\le 2\chi(G)$. Thus, $\chi_{os}(G)\le 8$ for every planar graph $G$ (by the 4 Color Theorem), $\chi_{os}(G)\le 6$ for every triangle-free planar graph $G$ (by Grötzsch's Theorem), and $\chi_{os}(G)\le 4$ for every bipartite graph. Caro et al. asked, for every even $\Delta\ge 4$, whether there exists $g_{\Delta}$ such that if $G$ is planar with maximum degree $\Delta$ and girth at least $g_{\Delta}$ then $\chi_{os}(G)\le 5$. They also asked, for every even $\Delta\ge 4$, whether there exists $g_{\Delta}$ such that if $G$ is planar and bipartite with maximum degree $\Delta$ and girth at least $g_{\Delta}$ then $\chi_{os}(G)\le 3$. We answer both questions negatively. We also refute a conjecture they made, resolve one further problem they posed, and make progress on another.

Abstract:The strong chromatic index of a graph $G$, denoted $\chi_s'(G)$, is the least number of colors needed to edge-color $G$ so that edges at distance at most two receive distinct colors. The strong list chromatic index, denoted $\chi_{s,\ell}'(G)$, is the least integer $k$ such that if arbitrary lists of size $k$ are assigned to each edge then $G$ can be edge-colored from those lists where edges at distance at most two receive distinct colors. We use the discharging method, the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz, and computation to show that if $G$ is a subcubic planar graph with $\operatorname{girth}(G) \geq 41$ then $\chi_{s,\ell}'(G) \leq 5$, answering a question of Borodin and Ivanova [Precise upper bound for the strong edge chromatic number of sparse planar graphs, Discuss. Math. Graph Theory, 33(4), (2014) 759--770]. We further show that if $G$ is a subcubic planar graph and $\operatorname{girth}(G) \geq 30$, then $\chi_s'(G) \leq 5$, improving a bound from the same paper. Finally, if $G$ is a planar graph with maximum degree at most four and $\operatorname{girth}(G) \geq 28$, then $\chi_s'(G) \leq 7$, improving a more general bound of Wang and Zhao from [Odd graphs and its application on the strong edge coloring, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1412.8358" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1412.8358">arXiv:1412.8358</a>] in this case.

Subchromatic numbers of powers of graphs with excluded minors

Abstract:A $k$-subcolouring of a graph $G$ is a function $f:V(G) \to \{0,\ldots,k-1\}$ such that the set of vertices coloured $i$ induce a disjoint union of cliques. The subchromatic number, $\chi_{\textrm{sub}}(G)$, is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ admits a $k$-subcolouring. Nešetřil, Ossona de Mendez, Pilipczuk, and Zhu (2020), recently raised the problem of finding tight upper bounds for $\chi_{\textrm{sub}}(G^2)$ when $G$ is planar. We show that $\chi_{\textrm{sub}}(G^2)\le 43$ when $G$ is planar, improving their bound of 135. We give even better bounds when the planar graph $G$ has larger girth. Moreover, we show that $\chi_{\textrm{sub}}(G^{3})\le 95$, improving the previous bound of 364. For these we adapt some recent techniques of Almulhim and Kierstead (2022), while also extending the decompositions of triangulated planar graphs of Van den Heuvel, Ossona de Mendez, Quiroz, Rabinovich and Siebertz (2017), to planar graphs of arbitrary girth. Note that these decompositions are the precursors of the graph product structure theorem of planar graphs. We give improved bounds for $\chi_{\textrm{sub}}(G^p)$ for all $p$, whenever $G$ has bounded treewidth, bounded simple treewidth, bounded genus, or excludes a clique or biclique as a minor. For this we introduce a family of parameters which form a gradation between the strong and the weak colouring numbers. We give upper bounds for these parameters for graphs coming from such classes. Finally, we give a 2-approximation algorithm for the subchromatic number of graphs coming from any fixed class with bounded layered cliquewidth. In particular, this implies a 2-approximation algorithm for the subchromatic number of powers $G^p$ of graphs coming from any fixed class with bounded layered treewidth (such as the class of planar graphs). This algorithm works even if the power $p$ and the graph $G$ is unknown.

On strong odd colorings of graphs

Abstract:A strong odd coloring of a simple graph $G$ is a proper coloring of the vertices of $G$ such that for every vertex $v$ and every color $c$, either $c$ is used an odd number of times in the open neighborhood $N_G(v)$ or no neighbor of $v$ is colored by $c$. The smallest integer $k$ for which $G$ admits a strong odd coloring with $k$ colors is the strong odd chromatic number, $\chi_{soc}(G)$. These coloring notion and graph parameter were recently defined in [H. Kwon and B. Park, Strong odd coloring of sparse graphs, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2401.11653v2" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2401.11653v2">arXiv:2401.11653v2</a>]. We answer a question raised by the originators concerning the existence of a constant bound for the strong odd chromatic number of all planar graphs. We also consider strong odd colorings of trees, unicyclic graphs and graph products.

Abstract:Thomassen (J. Combin. Theory Ser B 128:192–218, 2018) showed that every subcubic planar graph has 2-distance chromatic number at most 7, which was originally conjectured by Wegner (graphs with given diameter and a coloring problem, University of Dortmund, preprint, 1977). In this note, we consider 3-distance colorings of this family of graphs, and prove that every subcubic planar graph has 3-distance chromatic number at most 17, and we conjecture that this number can be reduced to 12. In addition, we show that every planar graph with maximum degree at most has 3-distance chromatic number at most .

Abstract:Many variations of the classical graph coloring model have been intensively studied due to their multiple applications; scheduling problems and aircraft assignments, for instance, motivate the robust coloring problem . This model gets to capture natural constraints of those optimization problems by combining the information provided by two colorings: a vertex coloring of a graph and the induced edge coloring on a subgraph of its complement; the goal is to minimize, among all proper colorings of the graph for a fixed number of colors, the number of edges in the subgraph with the endpoints of the same color. The study of the robust coloring model has been focused on the search for heuristics due to its NP-hard character when using at least three colors, but little progress has been made in other directions. We present a new approach on the problem obtaining the first collection of non-heuristic results for general graphs; among them, we prove that robust coloring is the model that better approaches the equitable partition of the vertex set, even when the graph does not admit a so-called equitable coloring . We also show the NP-completeness of its decision problem for the unsolved case of two colors, obtain bounds on the associated robust coloring parameter, and solve a conjecture on paths that illustrates the complexity of studying this coloring model.

Abstract:The odd chromatic number and the conflict-free chromatic number are new graph parameters introduced by Petru\v{s}evski and \v{S}krekovski [2021] and Fabrici, Lu\v{z}ar, Rindo\v{s}ov\'a and Sot\'ak [2022] respectively. In this note, we show that graphs with bounded $2$-strong colouring number have bounded odd chromatic number and bounded conflict-free chromatic number. This implies that graph classes with bounded expansion have bounded odd chromatic number and bounded conflict-free chromatic number. Moreover, it follows by known results that the odd chromatic number and the conflict-free chromatic number of $k$-planar graphs is $O(k)$ which improves a recent result of Dujmovi\'{c}, Morin and Odak [2022].

Abstract:A vertex coloring of a graph is said to be \textit{conflict-free} with respect to neighborhoods if for every non-isolated vertex there is a color appearing exactly once in its (open) neighborhood. As defined in [Fabrici et al., \textit{Proper Conflict-free and Unique-maximum Colorings of Planar Graphs with Respect to Neighborhoods}, arXiv preprint], the minimum number of colors in any such proper coloring of graph $G$ is the PCF chromatic number of $G$, denoted $\chi_{\mathrm{pcf}}(G)$. In this paper, we determine the value of this graph parameter for several basic graph classes including trees, cycles, hypercubes and subdivisions of complete graphs. We also give upper bounds on $\chi_{\mathrm{pcf}}(G)$ in terms of other graph parameters. In particular, we show that $\chi_{\mathrm{pcf}}(G) \leq5\Delta(G)/2$ and characterize equality. Several sufficient conditions for PCF $k$-colorability of graphs are established for $4\le k\le 6$. The paper concludes with few open problems.

Abstract:Let $G$ be the unit distance graph in the plane. A well-known problem in combinatorial geometry is that of determining the chromatic number of $G$. It is known that $4\le \chi(G)\le 7$. The upper bound of 7 is obtained using tilings of the plane. The present paper studies two problems where we seek proper colourings of $G$, adding restrictions inspired by tilings: Let $H(\epsilon)$ be the graph whose vertices are the points of ${\mathbb R}^2$, with an edge between two points if their distance lies in the interval $[1,1+\epsilon]$. We show that for small $\epsilon$, $0<\epsilon\le \frac{3\sqrt{2}}{4}-1$, we have $6\le \chi(H(\epsilon))\le 7$. This improves the result of Exoo and Grytczuk et al. that $5\le \chi(H(\epsilon))$ for small $\epsilon$. Suppose that $G$ is properly coloured, but so that two solidly coloured regions meet along a straight line in some neighbourhood. Then at least 5 colours must be used.
Monochromatic graph decompositions inspired by anti-Ramsey colorings

Abstract:We consider coloring problems inspired by the theory of anti-Ramsey / rainbow colorings that we generalize to a far extent. Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a hereditary family of graphs; i.e., if $H\in \mathcal{F}$ and $H'\subset H$ then also $H'\subset \mathcal{F}$. For a graph $G$ and any integer $n \geq |G|$, let $f(n,G|\mathcal{F})$ denote the smallest number $k$ of colors such that any edge coloring of $K_n$ with at least $k$ colors forces a copy of $G$ in which each color class induces a member of $\mathcal{F}$. The case $\mathcal{F} = \{K_2\}$ is the notorious anti-Ramsey / rainbow coloring problem introduced by Erdős, Simonovits and Sós in 1973. Using the $\mathcal{F}$-deck of $G$, $D(G|\mathcal{F}) = \{ H : H = G - D, \, D \in \mathcal{F}\}$, we define $\chi_\mathcal{F}(G) = \min \{ \chi(H) : H \in D(G|\mathcal{F}) \}$. The main theorem we prove is: Suppose $\mathcal{F}$ is a hereditary family of graphs, and let $G$ be a graph not a member of $\mathcal{F}$. (1) If $\chi_\mathcal{F}(G) \geq 3$, then $f(n, G |\mathcal{F}) = (1+o(1)) \, ex(n, K_{\chi_\mathcal{F}(G)})$. (2) Otherwise $f(n, G |\mathcal{F}) = o(n^2)$. Among the families covered by this theorem are: matchings, acyclic graphs, planar and outerplanar graphs, $d$-degenerate graphs, graphs with chromatic number at most $k$, graphs with bounded maximum degree, and many more. We supply many concrete examples to demonstrate the wide range of applications of the main theorem; the next result is a representative of these examples. For $p \geq 5$ and $\mathcal{F} = \{ tK_2 : t \geq 1 \}$, we have $f(n,K_p |\mathcal{F}) = (1+o(1)) \, ex(n, K_{\lceil p/2 \rceil})$; this means a properly colored copy of $K_p$. In other words, a certain number of colors forces nearly twice as large properly edge-colored complete subgraphs as rainbow ones.

Abstract:We introduce a new tool useful for greedy coloring, which we call the forb-flex method, and apply it to odd coloring and proper conflict-free coloring of planar graphs. The odd chromatic number, denoted $\chi_{\mathsf{o}}(G)$, is the smallest number of colors needed to properly color $G$ such that every non-isolated vertex of $G$ has a color appearing an odd number of times in its neighborhood. The proper conflict-free chromatic number, denoted $\chi_{\mathsf{PCF}}(G)$, is the smallest number of colors needed to properly color $G$ such that every non-isolated vertex of $G$ has a color appearing uniquely in its neighborhood. Our new tool works by carefully counting the structures in the neighborhood of a vertex and determining if a neighbor of a vertex can be recolored at the end of a greedy coloring process to avoid conflicts. Combining this with the discharging method allows us to prove $\chi_{\mathsf{PCF}}(G) \leq 4$ for planar graphs of girth at least 11, and $\chi_{\mathsf{o}}(G) \leq 4$ for planar graphs of girth at least 10. These results improve upon the recent works of Cho, Choi, Kwon, and Park.

Abstract:We show that any minimal Cayley graph of a (finitely generated) generalized dihedral or nilpotent group has chromatic number at most 3, while 4 colors are sometimes necessary for soluble groups. On the other hand we construct graphs of unbounded chromatic number that admit a proper edge coloring such that each cycle has some color at least twice. The latter disproves a conjecture of Babai'78 that would have implied that all minimal Cayley graphs have bounded chromatic number -- a problem that remains open.

Abstract:The $\chi$-stability index ${\rm es}_{\chi}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of its edges whose removal results in a graph with the chromatic number smaller than that of $G$. In this paper three open problems from [European J.\ Combin.\ 84 (2020) 103042] are considered. Examples are constructed which demonstrate that a known characterization of $k$-regular ($k\le 5$) graphs $G$ with ${\rm es}_{\chi}(G) = 1$ does not extend to $k\ge 6$. Graphs $G$ with $\chi(G)=3$ for which ${\rm es}_{\chi}(G)+{\rm es}_{\chi}(\overline{G}) = 2$ holds are characterized. Necessary conditions on graphs $G$ which attain a known upper bound on ${\rm es}_{\chi}(G)$ in terms of the order and the chromatic number of $G$ are derived. The conditions are proved to be sufficient when $n\equiv 2 \pmod 3$ and $\chi(G)=3$.

On Oriented Colourings of Graphs on Surfaces

Abstract:For an oriented graph $G$, the least number of colours required to oriented colour $G$ is called the oriented chromatic number of $G$ and denoted $\chi_o(G)$.For a non-negative integer $g$ let $\chi_o(g)$ be the least integer such that $\chi_o(G) \leq \chi_o(g)$ for every oriented graph $G$ with Euler genus at most $g$. We will prove that $\chi_o(g)$ is nearly linear in the sense that $\Omega(\frac{g}{\log(g)}) \leq \chi_o(g) \leq O(g \log(g))$. This resolves a question of the author, Bradshaw, and Xu, by improving their bounds of the form $\Omega((\frac{g^2}{\log(g)})^{1/3}) \leq \chi_o(g)$ and $\chi_o(g) \leq O(g^{6400})$.
