Abstract:The strong chromatic index of a graph $G$, denoted $\chi_s'(G)$, is the least number of colors needed to edge-color $G$ so that edges at distance at most two receive distinct colors. The strong list chromatic index, denoted $\chi_{s,\ell}'(G)$, is the least integer $k$ such that if arbitrary lists of size $k$ are assigned to each edge then $G$ can be edge-colored from those lists where edges at distance at most two receive distinct colors. We use the discharging method, the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz, and computation to show that if $G$ is a subcubic planar graph with $\operatorname{girth}(G) \geq 41$ then $\chi_{s,\ell}'(G) \leq 5$, answering a question of Borodin and Ivanova [Precise upper bound for the strong edge chromatic number of sparse planar graphs, Discuss. Math. Graph Theory, 33(4), (2014) 759--770]. We further show that if $G$ is a subcubic planar graph and $\operatorname{girth}(G) \geq 30$, then $\chi_s'(G) \leq 5$, improving a bound from the same paper. Finally, if $G$ is a planar graph with maximum degree at most four and $\operatorname{girth}(G) \geq 28$, then $\chi_s'(G) \leq 7$, improving a more general bound of Wang and Zhao from [Odd graphs and its application on the strong edge coloring, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1412.8358" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1412.8358">arXiv:1412.8358</a>] in this case.

Abstract:The chromatic index $\chi'(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest $k$ for which $G$ admits an edge $k$-coloring such that any two adjacent edges have distinct colors. The strong chromatic index $\chi'_s(G)$ of $G$ is the smallest $k$ such that $G$ has an edge $k$-coloring with the condition that any two edges at distance at most 2 receive distinct colors. A graph is 1-planar if it can be drawn in the plane so that each edge is crossed by at most one other edge. In this paper, we show that every graph $G$ with maximum average degree $\bar{d}(G)$ has $\chi'_{s}(G)\le (2\bar{d}(G)-1)\chi'(G)$. As a corollary, we prove that every 1-planar graph $G$ with maximum degree $\Delta$ has $\chi'_{\rm s}(G)\le 14\Delta$, which improves a result, due to Bensmail et al., which says that $\chi'_{\rm s}(G)\le 24\Delta$ if $\Delta\ge 56$.

Abstract:A strong edge-coloring of a graph <math>G</math> is an edge-coloring such that any two edges on a path of length three receive distinct colors. We denote the strong chromatic index by <math>χs′(G)</math> which is the minimum number of colors that allow a strong edge-coloring of <math>G</math>. Erdős and Nešetřil conjectured in 1985 that the upper bound of <math>χs′(G)</math> is <math>54Δ2</math> when <math>Δ</math> is even and <math>14(5Δ2−2Δ+1)</math> when <math>Δ</math> is odd, where <math>Δ</math> is the maximum degree of <math>G</math>. The conjecture is proved right when <math>Δ≤3</math>. The best known upper bound for <math>Δ=4</math> is 22 (Cranston, 2006). In this paper we extend the result of Cranston to the list version, that is, we prove that when <math>Δ=4</math>, list strong chromatic index is at most 22.

Abstract:A {\em strong edge coloring} of a graph $G$ is a proper edge coloring in which every color class is an induced matching. The {\em strong chromatic index} $\chiup_{s}'(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of colors in a strong edge coloring of $G$. In this note, we improve a result by D{\k e}bski \etal [Strong chromatic index of sparse graphs, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1301.1992v1" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1301.1992v1">arXiv:1301.1992v1</a>] and show that the strong chromatic index of a $k$-degenerate graph $G$ is at most $(4k-2) \cdot \Delta(G) - 2k^{2} + 1$. As a direct consequence, the strong chromatic index of a $2$-degenerate graph $G$ is at most $6\Delta(G) - 7$, which improves the upper bound $10\Delta(G) - 10$ by Chang and Narayanan [Strong chromatic index of 2-degenerate graphs, J. Graph Theory 73 (2013) (2) 119--126]. For a special subclass of $2$-degenerate graphs, we obtain a better upper bound, namely if $G$ is a graph such that all of its $3^{+}$-vertices induce a forest, then $\chiup_{s}'(G) \leq 4 \Delta(G) -3$; as a corollary, every minimally $2$-connected graph $G$ has strong chromatic index at most $4 \Delta(G) - 3$. Moreover, all the results in this note are best possible in some sense.

Abstract:Vizing’s planar graph conjecture remains open for planar graphs with maximum degree 6. In this note, we prove that if each triangle of a planar graph G with maximum degree 6 has a vertex incident with only one triangle, then the chromatic index of G is 6 which means that G is of class one.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper we consider those graphs that have maximum degree at least 1/ k times their order, where k is a (small) positive integer. A result of Hajnal and Szemerédi concerning equitable vertex‐colorings and an adaptation of the standard proof of Vizing's Theorem are used to show that if the maximum degree of a graph G satisfies Δ( G ) ≥ | V ( G )/ k , then X ″( G ) ≤ Δ( G ) + 2 k + 1. This upper bound is an improvement on the currently available upper bounds for dense graphs having large order.

Abstract:Let G be a graph and k a positive integer. A strong k -edge-coloring of G is a mapping such that for any two edges e and that are either adjacent to each other or adjacent to a common edge, . The strong chromatic index of G , denoted as , is the minimum integer k such that G has a strong k -edge-coloring. Lv, Li and Zhang [Graphs and Combinatorics 38 (3) (2022) 63] proved that if G is a claw-free subcubic graph other than the triangular prism then . In addition, they asked if the upper bound 8 can be improved to 7. In this paper, we answer this question in the affirmative. Our proof implies a polynomial-time algorithm for finding strong 7-edge-colorings of such graphs. We also construct infinitely many claw-free subcubic graphs with their strong chromatic indices attaining the bound 7.

Abstract:Let $mad(G)$ denote the maximum average degree (over all subgraphs) of $G$ and let $\chi_i(G)$ denote the injective chromatic number of $G$. We prove that if $mad(G) \leq 5/2$, then $\chi_i(G)\leq\Delta(G) + 1$; and if $mad(G) < 42/19$, then $\chi_i(G)=\Delta(G)$. Suppose that $G$ is a planar graph with girth $g(G)$ and $\Delta(G)\geq 4$. We prove that if $g(G)\geq 9$, then $\chi_i(G)\leq\Delta(G)+1$; similarly, if $g(G)\geq 13$, then $\chi_i(G)=\Delta(G)$.

An improved bound for 2-distance coloring of planar graphs with girth six

Abstract:A vertex coloring of a graph $G$ is said to be a 2-distance coloring if any two vertices at distance at most $2$ from each other receive different colors, and the least number of colors for which $G$ admits a $2$-distance coloring is known as the $2$-distance chromatic number $\chi_2(G)$ of $G$. When $G$ is a planar graph with girth at least $6$ and maximum degree $\Delta \geq 6$, we prove that $\chi_2(G)\leq \Delta +4$. This improves the best-known bound for 2-distance coloring of planar graphs with girth six.

Strong parity edge-colorings of graphs

Abstract:An edge-coloring of a graph $G$ assigns a color to each edge of $G$. An edge-coloring is a parity edge-coloring if for each path $P$ in $G$, it uses some color on an odd number of edges in $P$. It is a strong parity edge-coloring if for every open walk $W$ in $G$, it uses some color an odd number of times along $W$. The minimum numbers of colors in parity and strong parity edge-colorings of $G$ are denoted $p(G)$ and $\hat{p}(G)$, respectively. We characterize strong parity edge-colorings and use this characterization to prove lower bounds on $\hat{p}(G)$ and answer several questions of Bunde, Milans, West, and Wu. The applications are as follows. (1) We prove the conjecture that $\hat{p}(K_{s,t})=s \circ t$, where $s \circ t$ is the Hopf-Stiefel function. (2) We show that $\hat{p}(G)$ for a connected $n$-vertex graph $G$ equals the known lower bound $\lceil \log_2 n \rceil$ if and only if $G$ is a subgraph of the hypercube $Q_{\lceil \log_2 n \rceil }$. (3) We asymptotically compute $\hat{p}(G)$ when $G$ is the $\ell$th distance-power of a path, proving $\hat{p}(P_n^\ell)\sim\ell \lceil {\log_2 n} \rceil$. (4) We disprove the conjecture that $\hat{p}(G)=p(G)$ when $G$ is bipartite by constructing bipartite graphs $G$ such that $\hat{p}(G)/p(G)$ is arbitrarily large; in particular, with $\hat{p}(G)\ge\frac{1-o(1)}3 k\ln k$ and $p(G)\le2k+k^{1/3}$.

Edge-coloring sparse graphs with $Δ$ colors in quasilinear time

Abstract:In this paper we show that every graph $G$ of bounded maximum average degree ${\rm mad}(G)$ and with maximum degree $\Delta$ can be edge-colored using the optimal number of $\Delta$ colors in quasilinear time, whenever $\Delta\ge 2{\rm mad}(G)$. The maximum average degree is within a multiplicative constant of other popular graph sparsity parameters like arboricity, degeneracy or maximum density. Our algorithm extends previous results of Chrobak and Nishizeki [J. Algorithms, 1990] and Bhattacharya, Costa, Panski and Solomon [ESA 2024].

On strong odd colorings of graphs

Abstract:A strong odd coloring of a simple graph $G$ is a proper coloring of the vertices of $G$ such that for every vertex $v$ and every color $c$, either $c$ is used an odd number of times in the open neighborhood $N_G(v)$ or no neighbor of $v$ is colored by $c$. The smallest integer $k$ for which $G$ admits a strong odd coloring with $k$ colors is the strong odd chromatic number, $\chi_{soc}(G)$. These coloring notion and graph parameter were recently defined in [H. Kwon and B. Park, Strong odd coloring of sparse graphs, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2401.11653v2" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2401.11653v2">arXiv:2401.11653v2</a>]. We answer a question raised by the originators concerning the existence of a constant bound for the strong odd chromatic number of all planar graphs. We also consider strong odd colorings of trees, unicyclic graphs and graph products.

On interval edge-colorings of planar graphs

Abstract:An edge-coloring of a graph $G$ with colors $1,\ldots,t$ is called an \emph{interval $t$-coloring} if all colors are used and the colors of edges incident to each vertex of $G$ are distinct and form an interval of integers. In 1990, Kamalian proved that if a graph $G$ with at least one edge has an interval $t$-coloring, then $t\leq 2|V(G)|-3$. In 2002, Axenovich improved this upper bound for planar graphs: if a planar graph $G$ admits an interval $t$-coloring, then $t\leq \frac{11}{6}|V(G)|$. In the same paper Axenovich suggested a conjecture that if a planar graph $G$ has an interval $t$-coloring, then $t\leq \frac{3}{2}|V(G)|$. In this paper we confirm the conjecture by showing that if a planar graph $G$ admits an interval $t$-coloring, then $t\leq \frac{3|V(G)|-4}{2}$. We also prove that if an outerplanar graph $G$ has an interval $t$-coloring, then $t\leq |V(G)|-1$. Moreover, all these upper bounds are sharp.

Abstract:A proper edge coloring of a graph is strong if it creates no bichromatic path of length three. It is well known that for a strong edge coloring of a $k$-regular graph at least $2k-1$ colors are needed. We show that a $k$-regular graph admits a strong edge coloring with $2k-1$ colors if and only if it covers the Kneser graph $K(2k-1,k-1)$. In particular, a cubic graph is strongly $5$-edge-colorable whenever it covers the Petersen graph. One of the implications of this result is that a conjecture about strong edge colorings of subcubic graphs proposed by Faudree et al. [Ars Combin. 29 B (1990), 205--211] is false.

Weak Degeneracy of Planar Graphs

Abstract:The weak degeneracy of a graph $G$ is a numerical parameter that was recently introduced by the first two authors with the aim of understanding the power of greedy algorithms for graph coloring. Every $d$-degenerate graph is weakly $d$-degenerate, but the converse is not true in general (for example, all connected $d$-regular graphs except cycles and cliques are weakly $(d-1)$-degenerate). If $G$ is weakly $d$-degenerate, then the list-chromatic number of $G$ is at most $d+1$, and the same upper bound holds for various other parameters such as the DP-chromatic number and the paint number. Here we rectify a mistake in a paper of the first two authors and give a correct proof that planar graphs are weakly $4$-degenerate, strengthening the famous result of Thomassen that planar graphs are $5$-list-colorable.

The Number of Edges in Maximal 2-planar Graphs

Abstract:A graph is $2$-planar if it has local crossing number two, that is, it can be drawn in the plane such that every edge has at most two crossings. A graph is maximal $2$-planar if no edge can be added such that the resulting graph remains $2$-planar. A $2$-planar graph on $n$ vertices has at most $5n-10$ edges, and some (maximal) $2$-planar graphs -- referred to as optimal $2$-planar -- achieve this bound. However, in strong contrast to maximal planar graphs, a maximal $2$-planar graph may have fewer than the maximum possible number of edges. In this paper, we determine the minimum edge density of maximal $2$-planar graphs by proving that every maximal $2$-planar graph on $n\ge 5$ vertices has at least $2n$ edges. We also show that this bound is tight, up to an additive constant. The lower bound is based on an analysis of the degree distribution in specific classes of drawings of the graph. The upper bound construction is verified by carefully exploring the space of admissible drawings using computer support.

Abstract:A k -edge coloring φ of graph G is injective if any two edges at distance 2 or in the same triangle get different colors. The minimum k in such an edge coloring is the injective edge chromatic number of G , written as χi′(G) . Subchromatic numbers of powers of graphs with excluded minors

Abstract:A $k$-subcolouring of a graph $G$ is a function $f:V(G) \to \{0,\ldots,k-1\}$ such that the set of vertices coloured $i$ induce a disjoint union of cliques. The subchromatic number, $\chi_{\textrm{sub}}(G)$, is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ admits a $k$-subcolouring. Nešetřil, Ossona de Mendez, Pilipczuk, and Zhu (2020), recently raised the problem of finding tight upper bounds for $\chi_{\textrm{sub}}(G^2)$ when $G$ is planar. We show that $\chi_{\textrm{sub}}(G^2)\le 43$ when $G$ is planar, improving their bound of 135. We give even better bounds when the planar graph $G$ has larger girth. Moreover, we show that $\chi_{\textrm{sub}}(G^{3})\le 95$, improving the previous bound of 364. For these we adapt some recent techniques of Almulhim and Kierstead (2022), while also extending the decompositions of triangulated planar graphs of Van den Heuvel, Ossona de Mendez, Quiroz, Rabinovich and Siebertz (2017), to planar graphs of arbitrary girth. Note that these decompositions are the precursors of the graph product structure theorem of planar graphs. We give improved bounds for $\chi_{\textrm{sub}}(G^p)$ for all $p$, whenever $G$ has bounded treewidth, bounded simple treewidth, bounded genus, or excludes a clique or biclique as a minor. For this we introduce a family of parameters which form a gradation between the strong and the weak colouring numbers. We give upper bounds for these parameters for graphs coming from such classes. Finally, we give a 2-approximation algorithm for the subchromatic number of graphs coming from any fixed class with bounded layered cliquewidth. In particular, this implies a 2-approximation algorithm for the subchromatic number of powers $G^p$ of graphs coming from any fixed class with bounded layered treewidth (such as the class of planar graphs). This algorithm works even if the power $p$ and the graph $G$ is unknown.

Abstract:In this paper, by developing several new adjacency lemmas about a path on $4$ or $5$ vertices, we show that the average degree of 7-critical graphs is at least 6. It implies Vizing's planar graph conjecture for planar graphs with maximum degree $7$ and its extension to graphs embeddable in a surface with nonnegative Euler characteristic due to Sanders and Zhao (J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 83 (2001) 201-212 and J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 87 (2003) 254-263) and Zhang (Graphs and Combinatorics 16 (2000) 467-495).
