Abstract:A physical model is established to describe the kinetics and lasing mechanism of optically pumped cesium vapor laser. According to the experimental parameters, we analyze the influence of parameters of the pump light, the buffer gas pressure and the output coupler reflectivity on the output power and the optical-optical efficiency with the help of numerical method using this model. The simulation results are found to be in good agreement with that of experiments. It shows that this model reveals the kinetics and lasing mechanism of optically pumped cesium vapor laser correctly and is a theoretical guidance for the optimization of optically pumped alkali vapor laser. © 2010 Chin. Abstract:An RF CMOS model incorporating an improved substrate coupling network is developed. The proposed model focuses on characterizing the nonlinear phase of S12 when a transistor is under zero-bias condition. In addition, a corresponding parameter extraction technique of the model is proposed. To validate this model, a set of transistors fabricated in a commercial 90-nm CMOS process is investigated under multibias conditions. Comparison between measurement and calculation results shows that good agreement has been achieved, which indicates that the proposed model can accurately characterize the performance of transistors up to 66 GHz.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel robust, compact, and flexible neural-network model for a fiber Raman amplifier (FRA) is presented. The model can be used in various applications with promising accuracy and low requirement for memory. Analytical expressions are derived in order to make the optimal pump-power configuration much easier, and the computational time is reduced dramatically in comparison with other gain-design methods in real-time pump-power adjustment. The calculated on-off gain spectrum and the noise figure using the proposed model agree well with the experimental results. The model has a potential value in simulation and pump-power dynamic control.

Abstract:The problem of Raman amplifier optimization is studied. A differentiable interpolation function is obtained for the Raman gain coefficient using machine learning (ML), which allows for the gradient descent optimization of forward-propagating Raman pumps. Both the frequency and power of an arbitrary number of pumps in a forward pumping configuration are then optimized for an arbitrary data channel load and span length. The forward propagation model is combined with an experimentally-trained ML model of a backward-pumping Raman amplifier to jointly optimize the frequency and power of the forward amplifier's pumps and the powers of the backward amplifier's pumps. The joint forward and backward amplifier optimization is demonstrated for an unrepeatered transmission of 250 km. A gain flatness of $<$ 1~dB over 4 THz is achieved. The optimized amplifiers are validated using a numerical simulator.

Abstract:Within a context of C+L band transmission, this work proposes a design approach for Raman pumps in hybrid fiber amplifiers (HFAs) with the goal of maximizing the total system capacity. First, the optimization problem is constructed. The capacity of a system can be equivalently assessed by the mean generalized signal-to-noise ratio (GSNR) of all channels, which is chosen as the optimization objective. The powers of Raman pumps are chosen as the decision variable, and constraints on the Raman pump powers are added. Then, an optimization framework for Raman pump powers is proposed. An artificial neural network (ANN) is used to establish a differentiable model for GSNR and signal power after Raman amplification (RA). The gradient descent algorithm is adopted to perform the optimization. Simulations are conducted on a single-span link for modeling and on an 8-span link for optimization. Results show that the ANN can reach a high modeling accuracy with a prediction error of 0.16 dB for GSNR and 0.06 dB for signal power with specific link and signal parameters. Results also demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed optimization framework, and a gain of 0.54 dB on the mean GSNR can be achieved by the designed HFA compared with that of the design aimed at a flat gain profile.

Abstract:As global data traffic continues to surge, more spectrum resources are desired for optical networks to avoid capacity crunch. Among multiple solutions, multi-band transmission is appealing for practical deployment by utilizing the existing fiber infrastructures. In a multi-band system, multi-pump Raman amplifiers (RAs) are an attractive option for wide-band amplification with low noise figures. The physical characteristics of an RA can be described as a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations, of which there is no closed-form solution and the calculation is cumbersome. To efficiently shape the gain profile of an RA, many previous works utilize neural networks (NNs) to build an offline-trained model as the digital twin (DT) for the RA. Then, optimization algorithms can be applied to the NN-based DT. However, this type of method requires a large training dataset containing various pump configurations and corresponding gain profiles, resulting in high complexity during the offline training stage. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme called SMOF, which conducts RA modeling and gain profile optimization simultaneously. By iteratively freezing and unfreezing the inner parameters of the DT, the pump configuration is adjusted to achieve a desirable gain profile. A real-time experiment with a 4-pump RA for C+L-band is conducted for performance evaluation. SMOF can optimize one gain profile within ∼10 iterations of pump reconfigurations and optimize multiple gain profiles within ∼30 iterations of pump reconfigurations, thus achieving data-efficient optimization. Additionally, the DT obtained during optimization shows an optimal accuracy around the optimization target, which can be utilized to assist network control and optimization.

Abstract:By using the coupled steady-state equations, we have numerically studied the characteristics optimization of Raman fiber amplifier (RFA) in a signal/pump double-passes-the-gain-medium scheme. The simulation results are in very good agreement with those of experimental data. Given a constant pumping power, the length of dispersion compensation fiber (DCF) in a RFA could be determined. The optimum design shows that the best length of the DCF is at around 3.8±0.2km in our study. This could provide both the highest signal output power and the lowest noise figure among all conditions we choose.

Abstract:This paper presents a numerical analysis and comparison on the performance of multipump gain-flat Raman amplifiers based on triangular photonic crystal fiber and conventional fiber. It is demonstrated that the extra 5.93 dB Raman net gain can be achieved in the L-band when PCF acts as Raman gain medium. The noise performance of the two amplifiers are also calculated and compared. Comparison with the data of published literature was also carried out to verify our analysis. The results showed that PCF is the appropriate candidate for high gain Raman amplifiers.

Abstract:Designing and optimizing optical amplifiers to maximize system performance is becoming increasingly important as optical communication systems strive to increase throughput. Offline optimization of optical amplifiers relies on models ranging from white-box models deeply rooted in physics to black-box data-driven and physics-agnostic models. Here, we compare the capabilities of white-, grey- and black-box models on the challenging test case of optimizing a bidirectional distributed Raman amplifier to achieve a target frequency-distance signal power profile. We show that any of the studied methods can achieve similar frequency and distance flatness of between 1 and 3.6 dB (depending on the definition of flatness) over the C-band in an 80-km span. Then, we discuss the models' applicability, advantages, and drawbacks based on the target application scenario, in particular in terms of flexibility, optimization speed, and access to training data.

Abstract:There has been intensive research in memoryless nonlinear behavioral modeling of power amplifiers (PAs). But in broadband communication systems, memory effects of PAs can no longer be ignored and traditional memoryless model cannot accurately characterize the input-output relationship of PAs. In order to treat memory effects and reduce the complexity of general Volterra model, a new behavioral PA model based on modified Volterra series is proposed. Since the characteristics of power amplifiers change during transmission time, a recursive least squares algorithm with size-fixed observation matrices is developed to update the parameters of the PA model. This identification algorithm, which uses only the latest sample data to identify the parameters, can decrease computational complexity and data storage space needed for identification. Simulations are carried out to validate the performances of the proposed PA model and identification algorithm.

Abstract:We present a behavioral model in frequency domain for a bulk reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) used as a modulator in radio-over-fiber systems using X-parameters. X-parameters were extracted by the simulation based on the physical model of the RSOA in Agilent advanced design systems software. Unlike S-parameters, X-parameters consider magnitude and phase information on all harmonic and inter-modulation spectra. An excellent match was achieved between the results of the simulations based on the X-parameter model and the physical model. The X-parameters model based simulation, however, ran five times faster than the physical model based one. X-parameter models also allow intellectual property control.

Abstract:A theoretical model of noise-amplified spontaneous emission and Rayleigh backscattering-in few-mode fiber Raman amplifiers is presented in this letter. Based on this model, the equalization of the signal modal gain determines the equalization of the noise modal gain. The model can also be used to predict the mode-dependent optical signal-noise ratio. The theoretical results of this model are consistent with reported experimental results.

Abstract:Linear regression method for flat-gain Fiber Raman amplifier (FRA) pump power automatic configuration is proposed. it can give the optimal pump power configuration automatically according to the signal output variation with pump power changes, without any prior knowledge of fiber parameters, like attenuation, effective area, Raman gain factor, and etc. This method is based on the pump power integral model and linear regression theory and is verified by numerical simulation and experiment. The impact on pump configuration caused by power measurement uncertainty is also considered. The results show that deliberate selecting some parameters, like initial pump configuration, pump power variation amount, pump power perturbation times can reduce the impact.

Abstract:An efficient optimal algorithm, named SAA-PA in brief, based on the simulated annealing algorithm (SAA) and the Powell algorithm (PA) for the PCF-based Raman amplifiers (PCF-RA) design has been applied for the first time, in order to achieve the flat Raman gain characteristics. The pump spectra (wavelengths and powers) have been optimized to achieve low gain ripple (GR) over C+L band. The PCF considered to study the RA has the following parameters: Lambda=4 mu m, d/Lambda=0.625, Sixty signals (1540-1600 nm) spaced at 1 nm are launched to the PCF of 10-km length with an input power of -10 dBm/ch. Various pump wavelengths and power distributions have been considered with the aim to reduce the gain ripple as much as possible. Simulation results show that the lowest GR of 0.72 dB with a peak gain of 8.03 dB in an 10 km ULL-PCF can be attained over C+L band. Also, it has been easily found that, when the gain and bandwidth are approximately the same, the lowest GR decreases with the addition of pump number, i.e., the GR are 1.27, 1.11, 0.85, and 0.72 dB for 3, 4, 5, and 6 backward pumps, respectively. All this shows that PCF is an appropriate candidate for high gain Raman amplifier.

Abstract:The conventional direct parameter extraction method generally suffers from cumbersome due to redundant experiments. An efficient and systematical parameter extracting solution is proposed based on an equivalent circuit model of distributed feedback (DFB) lasers. The successfully built circuit model includes the necessary intrinsic parameters in the rate equations and the extrinsic parameters to provide a better approximation of the actual laser. This method is experimentally verified through a DFB laser chip measurement of electronic and optical performance under the same conditions. Finally, the nine intrinsic parameters in the rate equations and five extrinsic parameters in the model are efficiently extracted using this technique from a set of experimental characteristics of a DFB laser chip. Modeled and measured results for the laser output characteristics exhibit good agreement when the extracted parameters are used. The method is versatile for other semiconductor lasers that can be modeled using rate equations. Comparison with simulation results of published laser models further validates the reliability of the presented model and extraction method.
