Abstract:In Euclidean Ramsey Theory usually we are looking for monochromatic configurations in the Euclidean space, whose points are colored with a fixed number of colors. In the canonical version, the number of colors is arbitrary, and we are looking for an `unavoidable' set of colorings of a finite configuration, that is a set of colorings with the property that one of them always appears in any coloring of the space. This set definitely includes the monochromatic and the rainbow colorings. In the present paper, we prove the following two results of this type. First, for any acute triangle $T$, and any coloring of $\mathbb{R}^3$, there is either a monochromatic or a rainbow copy of $T$. Second, for every $m$, there exists a sufficiently large $n$ such that in any coloring of $\mathbb{R}^n$, there exists either a monochromatic or a rainbow $m$-dimensional unit hypercube. In the maximum norm, $\ell_{\infty}$, we have a much stronger statement. For every finite $M$, there exits an $n$ such that in any coloring of $\mathbb{R}_\infty^n$, there is either a monochromatic or a rainbow isometric copy of $M$.

Abstract:In this article, we prove that Ramsey's theorem for pairs and two colors is $\Pi^1_1$-conservative over~$\mathsf{RCA}_0 + \mathsf{B}\Sigma^0_2 + \mathsf{WF}(\epsilon_0)$ and over~$\mathsf{RCA}_0 + \mathsf{B}\Sigma^0_2 + \bigcup_n \mathsf{WF}(\omega^\omega_n)$. These results improve theorems from Chong, Slaman and Yang and Kołodziejczyk and Yokoyama and belong to a long line of research towards the characterization of the first-order part of Ramsey's theorem for pairs.

Abstract:We characterize the strength, in terms of Weihrauch degrees, of certain problems related to Ramsey-like theorems concerning colourings of the rationals and of the natural numbers. The theorems we are chiefly interested in assert the existence of almost-homogeneous sets for colourings of pairs of rationals respectively natural numbers satisfying properties determined by some additional algebraic structure on the set of colours. In the context of reverse mathematics, most of the principles we study are equivalent to $\Sigma^0_2$-induction over $\mathrm{RCA}_0$. The associated problems in the Weihrauch lattice are related to $\mathrm{TC}_\mathbb{N}^*$, $(\mathrm{LPO}')^*$ or their product, depending on their precise formalizations.

Abstract:In this article, we prove that Ramsey's theorem for pairs and two colors is a $\forall \Pi^0_4$ conservative extension of $\mathsf{RCA}_0 + \mathsf{B}\Sigma^0_2$, where a $\forall \Pi^0_4$ formula consists of a universal quantifier over sets followed by a $\Pi^0_4$ formula. The proof is an improvement of a result by Patey and Yokoyama and a step towards the resolution of the longstanding question of the first-order part of Ramsey's theorem for pairs.

Abstract:We prove that for every colouring of pairs of reals with finitely-many colours, there is a set homeomorphic to the rationals which takes no more than two colours. This was conjectured by Galvin in 1970, and a colouring of Sierpi{ń}ski from 1933 witnesses that the number of colours cannot be reduced to one. Previously in 1985 Shelah had shown that a stronger statement is consistent with a forcing construction assuming the existence of large cardinals. Then in 2018 Raghavan and Todorčević had proved it assuming the existence of large cardinals. We prove it in $ZFC$. In fact Raghavan and Todorčević proved, assuming more large cardinals, a similar result for a large class of topological spaces. We prove this also, again in $ZFC$.

A canonical Ramsey theorem with list constraints in random graphs

Abstract:The celebrated canonical Ramsey theorem of Erdős and Rado implies that for a given graph $H$, if $n$ is sufficiently large then any colouring of the edges of $K_n$ gives rise to copies of $H$ that exhibit certain colour patterns, namely monochromatic, rainbow or lexicographic. We are interested in sparse random versions of this result and the threshold at which the random graph $G(n,p)$ inherits the canonical Ramsey properties of $K_n$. Our main result here pins down this threshold when we focus on colourings that are constrained by some prefixed lists. This result is applied in an accompanying work of the authors on the threshold for the canonical Ramsey property (with no list constraints) in the case that $H$ is an even cycle.

Abstract:Given sets $F_1, \ldots ,F_n$, a {\em partial rainbow function} is a partial choice function of the sets $F_i$. A {\em partial rainbow set} is the range of a partial rainbow function. Aharoni and Berger \cite{AhBer} conjectured that if $M$ and $N$ are matroids on the same ground set, and $F_1, \ldots ,F_n$ are pairwise disjoint sets of size $n$ belonging to $M \cap N$, then there exists a rainbow set of size $n-1$ belonging to $M \cap N$. Following an idea of Woolbright and Brower-de Vries-Wieringa, we prove that there exists such a rainbow set of size at least $n-\sqrt{n}$.

Abstract:Inspired by Ramsey's theorem for pairs, Rival and Sands proved what we refer to as an inside/outside Ramsey theorem: every infinite graph $G$ contains an infinite subset $H$ such that every vertex of $G$ is adjacent to precisely none, one, or infinitely many vertices of $H$. We analyze the Rival-Sands theorem from the perspective of reverse mathematics and the Weihrauch degrees. In reverse mathematics, we find that the Rival-Sands theorem is equivalent to arithmetical comprehension and hence is stronger than Ramsey's theorem for pairs. We also identify a weak form of the Rival-Sands theorem that is equivalent to Ramsey's theorem for pairs. We turn to the Weihrauch degrees to give a finer analysis of the Rival-Sands theorem's computational strength. We find that the Rival-Sands theorem is Weihrauch equivalent to the double jump of weak König's lemma. We believe that the Rival-Sands theorem is the first natural theorem shown to exhibit exactly this strength. Furthermore, by combining our result with a result of Brattka and Rakotoniaina, we obtain that solving one instance of the Rival-Sands theorem exactly corresponds to simultaneously solving countably many instances of Ramsey's theorem for pairs. Finally, we show that the uniform computational strength of the weak Rival-Sands theorem is weaker than that of Ramsey's theorem for pairs by showing that a number of well-known consequences of Ramsey's theorem for pairs do not Weihrauch reduce to the weak Rival-Sands theorem. We also address an apparent gap in the literature concerning the relationship between Weihrauch degrees corresponding to the ascending/descending sequence principle and the infinite pigeonhole principle.

Abstract:We explore the connections between Dickson's lemma and weak Ramsey theory. We show that a weak version of the Paris--Harrington principle for pairs in $c$ colors and miniaturized Dickson's lemma for $c$-tuples are equivalent over $\mathsf{RCA}_0^{\ast}$. Furthermore, we look at a cascade of consequences for several variants of weak Ramsey's theorem.

Abstract:Ramsey Theorem [6] for pairs is intuitionistically but not classically provable: it is equivalent to a subclassical principle [2]. In this note we show that Ramsey may be restated in an intuitionistically provable form, which is informative (or at least without negations), and classically equivalent to the original. With respect to previous works of the same kind, we do not use no counterexample as in [1], [5], nor we add a new principle to the intuitionism as in [4]. Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 55-74, March 2024. A graph [math] is Ramsey for a pair of graphs [math] if any red/blue-coloring of the edges of [math] yields a copy of [math] with all edges colored red or a copy of [math] with all edges colored blue. Two pairs of graphs are called Ramsey equivalent if they have the same collection of Ramsey graphs. The symmetric setting, that is, the case [math], received considerable attention. This led to the open question whether there are connected graphs [math] and [math] such that [math] and [math] are Ramsey equivalent. We make progress on the asymmetric version of this question and identify several nontrivial families of Ramsey equivalent pairs of connected graphs. Certain pairs of stars provide a first, albeit trivial, example of Ramsey equivalent pairs of connected graphs. Our first result characterizes all Ramsey equivalent pairs of stars. The rest of the paper focuses on pairs of the form [math], where [math] is a tree and [math] is a complete graph. We show that if [math] belongs to a certain family of trees, including all nontrivial stars, then [math] is Ramsey equivalent to a family of pairs of the form [math], where [math] is obtained from [math] by attaching disjoint smaller cliques to some of its vertices. In addition, we establish that for [math] to be Ramsey equivalent to [math], [math] must have roughly this form. On the other hand, we prove that for many other trees [math], including all odd-diameter trees, [math] is not equivalent to any such pair, not even to the pair [math], where [math] is a complete graph [math] with a single edge attached.

Abstract:The study of symmetric structures is a new trend in Ramsey theory. Recently in [7], Di Nasso initiated a systematic study of symmetrization of classical Ramsey theoretical results, and proved a symmetric version of several Ramsey theoretic results. In this paper Di Nasso asked if his method could be adapted to find new non-linear Diophantine equations that are partition regular [7,Final remarks (4)]. By analyzing additive, multiplicative, and symmetric large sets, we construct new partition regular equations that give a first affirmative answer to this question. A special case of our result shows that if $P$ is a polynomial with no constant term then the equation $x+P(y-x)=z+w+zw$, where $y\neq x$ is partition regular. Also we prove several new monochromatic patterns involving additive, multiplicative, and symmetric structures. Throughout our work, we use tools from the Algebra of the Stone-Čech Compactifications of discrete semigroups.

Abstract:The canonical Ramsey theorem of Erdős and Rado implies that for any graph $H$, any edge-coloring (with an arbitrary number of colors) of a sufficiently large complete graph $K_N$ contains a monochromatic, lexicographic, or rainbow copy of $H$. The least such $N$ is called the Erdős-Rado number of $H$, denoted by $ER(H)$. Erdős-Rado numbers of cliques have received considerable attention, and in this paper we extend this line of research by studying Erdős-Rado numbers of sparse graphs. For example, we prove that if $H$ has bounded degree, then $ER(H)$ is polynomial in $|V(H)|$ if $H$ is bipartite, but exponential in general. We also study the closely-related problem of constrained Ramsey numbers. For a given tree $S$ and given path $P_t$, we study the minimum $N$ such that every edge-coloring of $K_N$ contains a monochromatic copy of $S$ or a rainbow copy of $P_t$. We prove a nearly optimal upper bound for this problem, which differs from the best known lower bound by a function of inverse-Ackermann type.

Abstract:The study of ordered Ramsey numbers of monotone paths for graphs and hypergraphs has a long history, going back to the celebrated work by Erdős and Szekeres in the early days of Ramsey theory. In this paper we obtain several results in this area, establishing two conjectures of Mubayi and Suk and improving bounds due to Balko, Cibulka, Král and Kynčl. We also obtain a color-monotone version of the well-known Canonical Ramsey Theorem of Erdős and Rado, which could be of independent interest.

Weak A2 spaces, the Kastanas game and strategically Ramsey sets

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a weak A2 space (or wA2-space), which generalises spaces satisfying Todorčević's axioms A1-A4 and countable vector spaces. We show that in any Polish weak A2 space, analytic sets are Kastanas Ramsey, and discuss the relationship between Kastanas Ramsey sets and sets in the projective hierarchy. We also show that in all spaces satisfying A1-A4, every subset of $\cal{R}$ is Kastanas Ramsey iff Ramsey, generalising the recent result by Cano and Di Prisco. Finally, we show that in the setting of Gowers wA2-spaces, Kastanas Ramsey sets and strategically Ramsey sets coincide, providing a connection between the recent studies on topological Ramsey spaces and countable vector spaces.

Abstract:We study new relations of the following statements with weak choice principles in ZF and ZFA. 1. There does not exist an infinite Hausdorff space X such that every infinite subset of X contains an infinite compact subset. 2. If a field has an algebraic closure then it is unique up to isomorphism. 3. For every infinite set X, there exists a permutation of X without fixed points. Moreover, we prove that the principle ``Any infinite locally finite connected graph has a spanning m-bush for any even integer m greater than or equal to 4'' is equivalent to Kőnig's Lemma in ZF. We also study the new status of different weak choice principles in the finite partition model (a type of permutation model) introduced by B.B. Bruce in 2016. Further, we prove that Van Douwen's Choice Principle holds in two recently constructed known permutation models.

Abstract:The well-known Galvin-Prikry Theorem states that Borel subsets of the Baire space are Ramsey: Given any Borel subset $\mathcal{X}\subseteq [\omega]^{\omega}$, where $[\omega]^{\omega}$ is endowed with the metric topology, each infinite subset $X\subseteq \omega$ contains an infinite subset $Y\subseteq X$ such that $[Y]^{\omega}$ is either contained in $\mathcal{X}$ or disjoint from $\mathcal{X}$. Kechris, Pestov, and Todorcevic point out in their seminal 2005 paper the dearth of similar results for homogeneous structures. Such results are a necessary step to the larger goal of finding a correspondence between structures with infinite dimensional Ramsey properties and topological dynamics, extending their correspondence between the Ramsey property and extreme amenability. In this article, we prove an analogue of the Galvin-Prikry theorem for the Rado graph. Any such infinite dimensional Ramsey theorem is subject to constraints following from the 2006 work of Laflamme, Sauer, and Vuksanovic. The proof uses techniques developed for the author's work on the Ramsey theory of the Henson graphs as well as some new methods for fusion sequences, used to bypass the lack of a certain amalgamation property enjoyed by the Baire space.

Abstract:We show that the Ramsey theory of block sequences in infinite-dimensional discrete vector spaces can be parametrized by perfect sets. As special cases, we prove combinatorial dichotomies for definable families of partitions and linear transformations on those spaces. We also consider the extent to which analogues of selective ultrafilters in this setting are preserved by Sacks forcing.
