Abstract:The physics of driven collective modes in quantum materials underpin a number of striking non-equilibrium functional responses, which include enhanced magnetism, ferroelectricity and superconductivity. However, the coherent coupling between multiple modes at once are difficult to capture by single-pump probe (one-dimensional) spectroscopy, and often remain poorly understood. One example is phonon-mediated amplification of Josephson plasmons in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$, in which at least three normal modes of the solid are coherently mixed as a source of enhanced superconductivity. Here, we go beyond previous pump-probe experiments in this system and acquire two-dimensional frequency maps using pairs of mutually delayed, carrier envelope phase stable mid-infrared pump pulses, combined with measurements of the time-modulated second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility. We find that the driven zone-center phonons amplify coherent pairs of opposite-momentum Josephson plasma polaritons, generating a squeezed state of interlayer phase fluctuations. The squeezed state is a potentially important ingredient in the microscopic physics of photo-induced superconductivity in this and other materials.
Superconductivity
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: in quantum materials, how enhanced superconductivity is generated by light - driven collective modes. Specifically, the paper explores whether, in the copper - oxide superconductor YBa₂Cu₃O₆₊ₓ (YBCO), effective amplification of Josephson plasmons can be achieved by resonantly optically exciting the apical - oxygen phonon mode, and whether these amplified modes can lead to enhanced superconducting properties in non - equilibrium states. The paper points out that in previous studies, single - pulse pump - probe techniques are usually used to study these processes, but this method is difficult to capture the coherent coupling between multiple modes, so the understanding of the multi - mode coupling mechanism remains insufficient. In this paper, by introducing two - dimensional frequency - mapping techniques, using two mid - infrared pump pulses with controllable time delays, combined with the measurement of time - modulated second - order nonlinear optical susceptibilities, these interactions between the modes are studied more in - depth. The main goal of the paper is to distinguish between two possible mechanisms: the three - wave mixing model (involving one phonon and two plasmons) and the four - wave mixing model (involving two phonons and two plasmons). By comparing experimental data with theoretical simulations, the authors find that the four - wave mixing model can better explain the experimentally observed phenomena, especially the coherent amplification of Josephson plasmons at about 1.5 THz, which is related to the enhancement of superconductivity. Overall, this paper aims to reveal, through advanced multi - dimensional nonlinear spectroscopic techniques, the microscopic physical mechanisms of superconducting properties in YBCO under light - driving, especially the coherent amplification of Josephson plasmons and its impact on superconductivity.
