Abstract:Coherent optical driving in quantum solids is emerging as a new research frontier, with many demonstrations of exotic non-equilibrium quantum phases. These are based on engineered band structures, and on stimulated nonlinear interactions between driven modes. Enhanced functionalities like ferroelectricity, magnetism and superconductivity have been reported in these non-equilibrium settings. In high-Tc cuprates, coherent driving of certain phonon modes induces a transient state with superconducting-like optical properties, observed far above T$_c$ and throughout the pseudogap phase. Questions remain not only on the microscopic nature of this phenomenon, but also on the macroscopic properties of these transient states, beyond the documented optical conductivities. Crucially, it is not clear if driven cuprates exhibit Meissner-like diamagnetism. Here, the time-dependent magnetic-field amplitude surrounding a driven YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.48}$ sample is probed by measuring Faraday rotation in a GaP layer adjacent to the superconductor. For the same driving conditions that result in superconducting-like optical properties, an enhancement of magnetic field at the edge of the sample is detected, indicative of induced diamagnetism. The dynamical field expulsion measured after pumping is comparable in size to the one expected in an equilibrium type II superconductor of similar shape and size with a volume susceptibility $\chi_v$ of order -0.3. Crucially, this value is incompatible with a photo-induced increase in mobility without superconductivity. Rather, it underscores the notion of a pseudogap phase in which incipient superconducting correlations are enhanced or synchronized by the optical drive.

Giant Dynamical Paramagnetism in the driven pseudogap phase of $ \rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}$

Abstract:In the past decade, photo-induced superconducting-like behaviors have been reported in a number of materials driven by intense pump fields. Of particular interest is the high-$T_c$ cuprate $\rm Y Ba_2 Cu_2 O_{6+x}$, where such effect has been reported up to the so-called pseudogap temperature $T^* \sim 300-400$ K. In a recent tour-de-force experiment, a transient magnetic field which is proportional to and in the same direction of an applied field has been observed outside the sample, suggestive of flux exclusion due to the Meissner effect. In this paper, we point out that the transient magnetic field could be explained by a model of bilayers of copper-oxygen planes with a local superconducting phase variable persisting up to the pseudo-gap temperature at equilibrium. Under pumping, the time evolution is described by a driven sine-Gordon equation. In the presence of an external magnetic field, this model exhibits a novel instability which amplifies the current at the edges of the bilayer formed by defects or grain boundaries, producing a giant paramagnetic magnetization in the same direction as the applied field. We present how this scenario can fit most of the available data and propose additional experimental tests which can distinguish our proposal from the Meissner flux exclusion scenario. To the extent that this model can account for the data, we conclude that the experiments have the important consequence of revealing the presence of local pairing in the pseudogap phase. More broadly, this work provides a new mechanism for amplifying external magnetic fields at ultra-fast time scales.

Abstract:The underlying physics of the magnetic-field-induced resistive state in high temperature cuprate superconductors remains a mystery. One interpretation is that the application of magnetic field destroys the d-wave superconducting gap to uncover a Fermi surface that behaves like a conventional (<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://i.e.Fermi" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> Liquid) metal (1). Another view is that an applied magnetic field destroys long range superconducting phase coherence, but the superconducting gap amplitude survives (2, 3). By measuring the specific heat of ultra-clean YBa2Cu3O6.56 (YBCO 6.56), we obtain a measure of the quasi-particle density of states from the superconducting state well into the magnetic-field-induced resistive state. We have found that at very high magnetic fields the specific heat exhibits both the conventional temperature dependence and quantum oscillations expected for a Fermi Liquid. On the other hand, the magnetic field dependence of the quasi-particle density of states follows a \sqrt{H} behavior that persists right through the zero-resistance transition, evidencing the fully developed d-wave superconducting gap over the entire magnetic field range measured. The coexistence of these two phenomena pose a rigorous thermodynamic constraint on theories of high-magnetic-field resistive state in the cuprates.

Abstract:We report on transient reflectivity and magneto-optical Kerr measurements from the colossal magnetoresistance compounds La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LCMO), La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO), and Sr2FeMoO6 (SFMO) as a function of temperature and magnetic field. In LCMO and LSMO, an unusually slow (similar to 1 mu s) carrier relaxation component is revealed in the transient reflectivity traces. The component disappears as the transition temperature is approached from below. This slow decay process is attributed to spin-lattice relaxation of carriers in localized states and shows a close relationship with the spectral weight near the Fermi surface. The attribution is further supported by our pump-probe magneto-optical Kerr measurements. In addition to the clear observation of magnetic precessions, a long-lived exponentially decaying background reflects the spin-related relaxation of photoexcited electrons. In contrast to manganites, the temperature dependence of transient reflectivity is negligible, although there is a significant change in transient Kerr rotation in SFMO. Our results show that the dynamics of charge, spin, and lattice are strongly correlated with each other in the manganites, but the spin degree of freedom is thermally insulated from the electron and lattice systems.
Universality of the {\bf q}=1/2 Orbital Magnetism in the Pseudogap Phase of the High-$T_c$ superconductor $\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+x}$

Abstract:Several decades of debate have centered around the nature of the enigmatic pseudo-gap state in high temperature superconducting copper oxides. Recently, we reported polarized neutron diffraction measurements that suggested the existence of a magnetic texture bound to the pseudo-gap phase [Bounoua, {\it et al}. Communications Physics 5, 268 (2022)]. Such a magnetic texture is likely to involve the spontaneous appearance of loop currents within the CuO$_2$ unit cells, which give birth to complex correlated patterns. In the underdoped ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.6}}$, the magnetic structure factor of such an orbital magnetic texture gives rise to two distinct magnetic responses at {\bf q}=0 and {\bf q}=1/2. As this pattern alters the lattice translation invariance, such a state of matter could contribute to an instability of the Fermi surface. Here, we report polarized neutron scattering measurements on a nearly optimally doped high quality single crystal of ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.9}}$ that exhibits the same {\bf q}=1/2 magnetism and a weakly overdoped ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7}}$ sample where this signal is no longer sizeable. The in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic neutron scattering intensities in ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.9}}$ (at {\bf q}=1/2) and ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.85}}$ (at {\bf q}=0), reported previously, display the same temperature dependent hallmarks. The magnitudes of both {\bf q}=0 and {\bf q}=1/2 magnetic signals further exhibit the same trends upon doping in ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+x}}$, confirming that they are likely intertwined.

Abstract:YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) is a crucial aspect of research in the field of superconducting applications, where its high anisotropy is generally undesirable in strong power transmission. However, from a dialectical perspective, a thorough investigation of material anisotropy can offer an additional degree of freedom to tune potential properties and design innovative devices. This work employed pulsed laser deposition to fabricate a high-quality YBCO thin film (Tc = 89 K) and used the Mueller matrix spectroscopic ellipsometer (MMSE) to determine the complete dielectric tensor of the YBCO film across the ultraviolet to near-infrared spectrum (245-1000 nm), enabling a comprehensive, quantitative study of the optical anisotropy of YBCO. It provided optical constants and dielectric function spectra for different axes. We found that YBCO exhibits birefringence and dichroism both in-plane and out-of-plane. By combining standard critical point (SCP) analysis and first-principles calculations, we identified specific interband transitions related to SCP in the YBCO dielectric spectra, revealing the physical essence of anisotropic optical transitions from a quantum mechanical standpoint. Temperature-dependent studies of the transitions and optical constants were conducted. The work fills a partial void in the optical parameters of the anisotropy of YBCO and holds relevance for understanding the origins of copper-based hightemperature superconductivity.
Discovery of Slow Magnetic Fluctuations and Critical Slowing Down in the Pseudogap Phase of YBa2Cu3Oy

Abstract:The origin of the pseudogap region below a temperature T* is at the heart of the mysteries of cuprate high-temperature superconductors. Unusual properties of the pseudogap phase, such as broken time-reversal and inversion symmetry are observed in several symmetry-sensitive experiments: polarized neutron diffraction, optical birefringence, dichroic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, second harmonic generation, and polar Kerr effect. These properties suggest that the pseudogap region is a genuine thermodynamic phase and are predicted by theories invoking ordered loop currents or other forms of intra-unit-cell (IUC) magnetic order. However, muon spin rotation (μSR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments do not see the static local fields expected for magnetic order, leaving room for skepticism. The magnetic resonance probes have much longer time scales, however, over which local fields could be averaged by fluctuations. The observable effect of the fluctuations in magnetic resonance is then dynamic relaxation. We have measured dynamic muon spin relaxation rates in single crystals of YBa2Cu3O y (6.72 < y < 6.95) and have discovered "slow" fluctuating magnetic fields with magnitudes and fluctuation rates of the expected orders of magnitude that set in consistently at temperatures Tmag ≈ T*. The absence of any static field (to which μSR would be linearly sensitive) is consistent with the finite correlation length from neutron diffraction. Equally important, these fluctuations exhibit the critical slowing down at Tmag expected near a time-reversal symmetry breaking transition. Our results explain the absence of static magnetism and provide support for the existence of IUC magnetic order in the pseudogap phase.
Dynamic magnetic phase transition induced by parametric magnon pumping

Abstract:Uncovering pathways to optically drive magnetic order-disorder transitions on ultrashort timescales can lead to the realization of novel out-of-equilibrium quantum phenomena. A long-sought pathway is to directly excite a highly non-thermal energy-momentum distribution of magnons, bypassing both charge and lattice degrees of freedom. However, this remains elusive owing to the weak coupling and large momentum mismatch between photons and magnons. Here we demonstrate strong parametric excitation of magnons across the entire Brillouin zone of the antiferromagnetic insulator Sr$_2$Cu$_3$O$_4$Cl$_2$ by periodically modulating the superexchange interaction with the electric field of light. The excitation efficiency is greatly enhanced by tuning to the van Hove singularity in the magnon spectrum, sufficient to transiently collapse the antiferromagnetic state using a pulsed laser field of 10$^9$ V/m. The order parameter recovery timescale increases by over 1000 times as a function of excitation density, reflecting a crossover from high- to low-energy magnon dominated decay dynamics. This electric-field induced parametric magnon pumping mechanism is applicable to a broad range of magnetic insulators and opens up the possibility of dynamically engineering magnon distributions by design.

Abstract:Signatures of photo-induced superconductivity have been reported in cuprate materials subjected to a coherent phonon drive. A 'cold' superfluid was extracted from the transient Terahertz conductivity and was seen to coexist with 'hot' uncondensed quasi-particles, a hallmark of a driven-dissipative system of which the interplay between coherent and incoherent responses are not well understood. Here, time resolved spontaneous Raman scattering was used to probe the lattice temperature in the photo-induced superconducting state of YBa2Cu3O6.48. An increase in lattice temperature of approximately 80 K was observed by measuring the time dependent Raman scattering intensity of an undriven 'spectator' phonon mode. This is to be compared with an estimated increase in quasi-particle temperatures of nearly 200 K. These temperature changes provide quantitative information on the nature of the driven state and its decay, and may provide a strategy to optimize this effect.

Abstract:The investigation of high-temperature superconductors under high magnetic fields is one of the most important topics in condensed matter physics. For YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO), the measurements of magnetoresistance under a high magnetic field are technically challenging because the required magnetic field ($B$) is 100 T class. The low temperature (from 52 to 150 K) magnetoresistance is measured in optimally-doped YBCO thin films under the condition $B$$\parallel$CuO$_2$-plane up to 103 T by employing the single-turn coil technique and a radio frequency reflection method. The electrical resistivity $\rho$ exhibits $B$-linear behavior in the normal phase in the high magnetic field region. The field slope coefficient $\beta$ (=$d\rho/dB$) becomes converged at low temperatures. The convergency of $\beta$ below $T_c$ indicates the field-induced strange metal phase, which is determined by the quantum critical fluctuation at high magnetic fields. The $\beta$ value difference under the different directions of the magnetic field suggests the strong anisotropy in quantum critical fluctuations in the strange metal phase of YBCO.

Abstract:In hole-doped cuprates, Nernst experiments imply that the superconducting state is destroyed by spontaneous creation of vortices which destroy phase coherence. Using torque magnetometry on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+delta), we uncover a field-enhanced diamagnetic signal M above the transition temperature Tc that increases with applied field to 32 Tesla and scales just like the Nernst signal. The magnetization results above Tc distinguish M from conventional amplitude fluctuations and strongly support the vortex scenario for the loss of phase coherence at Tc.

Abstract:We report results of a muon spin relaxation study of slow magnetic fluctuations in the pseudogap phase of underdoped single-crystalline YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$, $y = 6.77$ and 6.83. The dependence of the dynamic muon spin relaxation rate on applied magnetic field yields the rms magnitude~$B\mathrm{_{loc}^{rms}}$ and correlation time~$\tau_c$ of fluctuating local fields at muon sites. The observed relaxation rates do not decrease with decreasing temperature~$T$ below the pseudogap onset at $T^\ast$, as would be expected for a conventional magnetic transition; both $B\mathrm{_{loc}^{rms}}$ and $\tau_c$ are roughly constant in the pseudogap phase down to the superconducting transition. Corresponding NMR relaxation rates are estimated to be too small to be observable. Our results put strong constraints on theories of the anomalous pseudogap magnetism in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$.
Near-infrared light-induced superconducting-like state in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ studied by $c$-axis terahertz third-harmonic generation

Abstract:Recent observation of the light-induced superconducting (SC)-like transient response in the $c$-axis optical conductivity far above the SC transition temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ (YBCO) has attracted great attention in the field of high-$T_{\mathrm{c}}$ superconductors. Since then, various theoretical and experimental studies have been devoted to elucidating its microscopic origin. One prominent fingerprint of the light-induced superconductivity is the emergence of $1/\omega$-like spectral behavior in the imaginary part of the optical conductivity in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. However, the spectral profile can also be described by the Drude response of the quasiparticles (QPs) with a substantially low scattering rate. To circumvent this critical ambiguity, we investigated the light-induced nonequilibrium state in an underdoped YBCO sample with $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ of 61 K using the nonlinear THz optical response originating from the SC collective excitation of the ac-driven Josephson current. Upon the near-infrared (NIR) photoexcitation above $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ in the YBCO sample, the $1/\omega$-like spectral behavior in the imaginary part of the optical conductivity emerges, consistent with the previous studies. However, the THz third-harmonic generation arising from the ac-driven Josephson current along the $c$-axis was absent in the NIR photoexcited state. These results indicate that the NIR-pump induced state exhibiting the $1/\omega$-like response above $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ is distinct from the long-range ordered SC state in equilibrium. Based on these observations, the possible origins of the irregularly coherent charge carrier response along the $c$-axis induced by the photoexcitation are discussed.

Abstract:An explanation of the closely related temperature dependences of both charge and spin excitations in the CuO2 plane for underdoped YBCO systems is presented. The spin pseudogap and the anomalous temperature dependences of the in-plane resistivity and the optical conductivity observed in these underdoped compounds are suggested to follow from the energy difference between the chemical potential and the energy of hole quasiparticles at the van Hove singularity (vHs). The numerical results based on the quasiparticle spectrum calculated by Dagatto et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 74 (1995) 310] are in good agreement with experiments.

Abstract:Resonant absorption of a photon by bound electrons in a solid can promote an electron to another orbital state or transfer it to a neighboring atomic site. Such a transition in a magnetically ordered material could affect the magnetic order. While this process is an obvious road map for optical control of magnetization, experimental demonstration of such a process remains challenging. Exciting a significant fraction of magnetic ions requires a very intense incoming light beam, as orbital resonances are often weak compared to above-band-gap excitations. In the latter case, a sizeable reduction of the magnetization occurs as the absorbed energy increases the spin temperature, masking the non-thermal optical effects. Here, using ultrafast x-ray spectroscopy, we were able to resolve changes in the magnetization state induced by resonant absorption of infrared photons in Co-doped yttrium iron garnet, with negligible thermal effects. We found that the optical excitation of the Co ions affects the two distinct magnetic Fe sublattices differently, resulting in a transient non-collinear magnetic state. The present results indicate that the all-optical magnetization switching most likely occurs due to the creation of a transient, non-collinear magnetic state followed by coherent spin rotations of the Fe moments.

Abstract:Abstract Strongly driven antiferromagnetic Mott insulators have the potential to exhibit exotic transient phenomena that are forbidden in thermal equilibrium. However, such far-from-equilibrium regimes, where conventional time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau descriptions fail, are experimentally challenging to prepare and to probe especially in solid state systems. Here we use a combination of time-resolved second harmonic optical polarimetry and coherent magnon spectroscopy to interrogate n -type photo-doping induced ultrafast magnetic order parameter dynamics in the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator Sr 2 IrO 4 . We find signatures of an unusual far-from-equilibrium critical regime in which the divergences of the magnetic correlation length and relaxation time are decoupled. This violation of conventional thermal critical behavior arises from the interplay of photo-doping and non-thermal magnon population induced demagnetization effects. Our findings, embodied in a non-equilibrium phase diagram, provide a blueprint for engineering the out-of-equilibrium properties of quantum matter, with potential applications to terahertz spintronics technologies.

Quantum phase transitions in magnetism and superconductivity: emergent spin topology seen with neutrons

Abstract:Magnetic spins and charges interact strongly in high-temperature superconductors. New physics emerges as layers of copper oxide are tuned towards the boundary of the superconducting phase. As the pseudogap increases the characteristic spin excitation energy decreases. We show that our well-annealed YBa2Cu3O6+x (YBCO6+x) single crystals are orthorhombic and superconducting but not antiferromagnetically ordered. Near the critical concentration for superconductivity for x = 0.35 the spins fluctuate on two energy scales, one a relaxational spin response at ~2 meV and the other a slow central mode that is resolution-limited in energy (<0.08 meV) but broad in momentum. The gradual formation on cooling of a central mode over a range of momenta suggests that the spin ground state from which coherent superconducting pairing emerges may be quantum disordered. We show that YBCO6.35 adopts a homogeneous state that consists of highly-organized frozen sub-critical three-dimensional spin correlations. The continuous spin evolution indicates that a single quantum state occurs in contrast to claims from site-based probes that lightly doped YBCO undergoes a transition to antiferromagnetic Bragg order followed by a sharp transition to a cluster glass phase. For x = 0.35, where Tc = 18 K is reduced to 1/5 of Tcmax, the spin ground state is reached without a sharp transition and consists of short correlations extending over only 8 Angstrom between cells and 42 Angstrom within the planes. Polarized neutrons show the angular spin distribution to be isotropic unlike the AF insulator. Since moment is conserved we interpret this as evidence for hole-induced spin rotations rather than decay.

Abstract:Frustration-induced strong quantum fluctuations accompanied by spin-orbit coupling and crystal electric field can give rise to rich and diverse magnetic phenomena associated with unconventional low-energy excitations in rare-earth based quantum magnets. Herein, we present crystal structure, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, muon spin relaxation(muSR), and electron spin resonance (ESR) studies on the polycrystalline samples of Ba6Yb2Ti4O17 in which Yb3+ ions constitute a perfect triangular lattice in ab-plane without detectable anti-site disorder between atomic sites. The Curie-Weiss fit of low-temperature magnetic susceptibility data suggest the spin-orbit entangled Jeff = 1/2 degrees of freedom of Yb3+ spin with weak antiferromagnetic exchange interactions in the Kramers doublet ground state. The zero-field specific heat data reveal the presence of long-range magnetic order at TN = 77 mK which is suppressed in a magnetic field 1 T. The broad maximum in specific heat is attributed to the Schottky anomaly implying the Zeeman splitting of the Kramers doublet ground state. The ESR measurements suggest the presence of anisotropic exchange interaction between the moments of Yb3+ spins and the well separated Kramers doublet state. muSR experiments reveal a fluctuating state of Yb3+ spins in the temperature range 0.1 K-100 K owing to depopulation of crystal electric field levels, which suggests that the Kramers doublets are well separated consistent with thermodynamic and ESR results. In addition to the intraplane nearest-neighbor superexchange interaction, the interplane exchange interaction and anisotropy are expected to stabilize the long-range ordered state in this triangular lattice antiferromagnet.

Abstract:Intense laser pulses have recently emerged as a tool to tune between different orders in complex quantum materials. Among different light-induced phenomena, transient superconductivity far above the equilibrium transition temperature in cuprates is particularly attractive. Key to those experiments was the resonant pumping of specific phonon modes, which was believed to induce superconducting phase coherence by suppressing the competing orders or modifying the structure slightly. Here, we present a comprehensive study of photo-induced nonequilibrium response in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$. We find that upon photo-excitations, Josephson plasma edge in superconducting state is initially removed accompanied by quasiparticle excitations, and subsequently reappears at frequency lower than the static plasma edge within short time. In normal state, an enhancement or weaker edge-like shape is indeed induced by pump pulses in the reflectance spectrum accompanied by simultaneous rises in both real and imaginary parts of conductivity. We compare the pump-induced effects between near- and mid-infrared excitations and exclude phonon pumping as a scenario for the photo-induced effects above. We further elaborate the transient responses in normal state are unlikely to be explained by photo-induced superconductivity.

Abstract:Spin waves in magnetic films are affected by the vicinity to a superconductor. Here we focus on a bilayer stack made of an insulating yttrium iron garnet (YIG) film and a high- TcYBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) superconducting planar resonator and report microwave transmission spectra to monitor the temperature evolution of magnon-photon polaritons. We show that the observed temperature dependence of normal-mode splitting and frequency shift with respect to the unperturbed magnon mode can be ultimately related to the penetration depth of YBCO, as an effect of the interplay between spin waves and Meissner currents. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.22.034004 © 2024 American Physical Society
