Abstract:Quantum simulators built from ultracold atoms promise to study quantum phenomena in interacting many-body systems. However, it remains a challenge to experimentally prepare strongly correlated continuous systems such that the properties are dominated by quantum fluctuations. Here, we show how to enhance the quantum correlations in a one-dimensional multimode bosonic Josephson junction, which is a quantum simulator of the sine-Gordon field theory. Our approach is based on the ability to track the nonequilibrium dynamics of quantum properties. After creating a bosonic Josephson junction at the stable fixed point of the classical phase space, we observe squeezing oscillations in the two conjugate variables. We show that the squeezing oscillation frequency can be tuned by more than one order of magnitude, and we are able to achieve a spin squeezing close to 10 dB by utilizing these oscillatory dynamics. The impact of improved spin squeezing is directly revealed by detecting enhanced spatial phase correlations between decoupled condensates. Our work provides new ways for engineering correlations and entanglement in the external degree of freedom of interacting many-body systems. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevX.14.011049 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to enhance quantum correlations in one - dimensional multimode Bosonic Josephson Junction (BJJ), especially to achieve stronger spin squeezing. Specifically, by tracing the quantum properties in the non - equilibrium dynamic process, the researchers showed how to observe squeezing oscillations in such a system and use these oscillation dynamics to enhance spin squeezing in coupled condensates. In addition, they also explored the impact of these enhanced spin squeezings on the spatial phase correlations, thus providing new methods for engineering correlations and entanglements in the external degrees of freedom of interacting many - body systems. The core contributions of the paper are as follows: 1. **Enhancement of quantum correlations**: By observing squeezing oscillations in one - dimensional multimode Bosonic Josephson Junction, the researchers were able to significantly enhance the quantum correlations of the system, especially spin squeezing, reaching a level close to 10 dB. 2. **Utilization of non - equilibrium dynamics**: The research showed how to manipulate quantum states by controlling the non - equilibrium dynamic process, thereby achieving more effective spin squeezing. 3. **Improvement of spatial phase correlations**: Through experimental verification, enhanced spin squeezing can indeed improve spatial phase correlations, which is especially important in multimode systems. 4. **Development of regulation methods**: The researchers proposed a two - step sequence method, which further enhanced the effect of spin squeezing by optimizing the holding time during the splitting process. These achievements not only provide new tools for understanding and manipulating quantum correlations in quantum many - body systems, but also lay the foundation for future quantum technology applications, such as quantum metrology and quantum simulation.
