Abstract:The multi-order exact solutions of the two-dimensional complex Ginzburg–Landau equation are obtained by making use of the wave-packet theory. In these solutions, the zeroth-order exact solution is a plane wave, the first-order exact solutions are shock waves for the amplitude and spiral waves both between the amplitude and the shift of phase and between the shift of phase and the distance.

Abstract:Using finite element simulation, we study the main features of rotating wave solutions of the cubic complex Ginzburg–Landau equation. To focus on the characteristics of the waves themselves, we have used a circular domain to avoid the effects of irregular boundaries; we have inhibited the formation of defects using an Archimedean wave centered at the origin as the initial condition, and we have chosen a domain size long enough to contain several spiral arms but not so long as to promote long-wave instabilities. This allows us to focus on the geometric features of the solutions often overlooked in traditional works with random initial conditions in large domains. We show with our simulations that the convective and absolute stabilities differ from those predicted for plane waves. Likewise, we show that the appearance of spirals and anti-spirals can occur in any of the quadrants of the parameter space and depends fundamentally on the initial conditions. Finally, regarding the stability of spiral waves against sideband disturbances, we show that the persistence of two-dimensional spiral waves, if fulfilled, does not correspond to the Eckhaus criterion. Our simulations allow us to corroborate the idea that two-dimensional spirals depend on the size of the domain and that they require new analytical results whose trends are identified in this work.

Abstract:A solution in the form of X-wave patterns of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with a harmonic background inhomogeneity is obtained. The pattern can be attributed to the effects of the harmonic potential and the boundary configuration and size. By varying the harmonic of the background potential, the competition among three types of wave patterns: spiral, X, and target, is investigated by following the evolution of the Fourier modes.

Abstract:This research focuses on investigating an extended version of the Ginzburg–Landau (GL) equation that describes the motion of particles in a plasma. The other applications of this model can be found in optics, and other related fields. As part of our approach, we seek to discover some new wave solutions to the model, and then use the Galilean transformation in order to determine the model's dynamical properties. After that, we use planar dynamical system theory to perform an in-depth bifurcation analysis, which gives us valuable insight into the system. By conducting thorough mathematical and bifurcation analyses, we identify the fundamental dynamics and critical points that regulate the system's behavior. Moreover we explore the chaotic nature of the system, uncovering potential chaotic tendencies and their consequences. Further, we obtain several categories of optical solutions of the complex GL equation by utilizing new logarithmic transformations, offering valuable insight into its behavior and potential applications in optics. Our analytical technique yields closed-form solutions expressing elementary functions. In order to ensure the reliability of our findings, we rigorously validate the obtained solutions by substituting them back into the original model. Our research helps us better understand this equation's characteristics and its relevance across a wide range of disciplines.

Abstract:We prove the existence of $m$-armed spiral wave solutions for the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation in the circular and spherical geometries. We establish a new global bifurcation approach and generalize the results of existence for rigidly-rotating spiral waves. Moreover, we prove the existence of two new patterns: frozen spirals in the circular and spherical geometries, and 2-tip spirals in the spherical geometry.

Abstract:Multiple-spiral-wave solutions of the general cubic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation in bounded domains are considered. We investigate the effect of the boundaries on spiral motion under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, for small values of the twist parameter $q$. We derive explicit laws of motion for rectangular domains and we show that the motion of spirals becomes exponentially slow when the twist parameter exceeds a critical value depending on the size of the domain. The oscillation frequency of multiple-spiral patterns is also analytically obtained.

Abstract:We reformulate the one-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation as a fourth order ordinary differential equation in order to find stationary spatially-periodic solutions. Using this formalism, we prove the existence and stability of stationary modulated-amplitude wave solutions. Approximate analytic expressions and a comparison with numerics are given.

A rigorous derivation of the asymptotic wavenumber of spiral wave solutions of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation

Abstract:In this work n-armed Archimedian spiral wave solutions of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation are considered. These solutions are showed to depend on two characteristic parameters, the so called twist parameter and the asymptotic wavenumber. The existence and uniqueness of the value of the asymptotic wavenumber, depending on the twist parameter, for which n-armed Archimedian spiral wave solutions exist is a classical result, obtained back in the 80s by Kopell and Howard. In this work we deal with a different problem, that is, the asymptotic expression of the asymtptotic wavenumer for small values of the twist parameter. Since the eighties, different heuristic perturbation techniques, like formal asymptotic expansions, have conjectured an asymptotic expression of which is exponentially small with respect to the twist parameter. However, the validity of this expression has remained opened until now, despite of the fact that it has been widely used for more than 40 years. In this work, using a functional analysis approach, we finally prove the validity of the asymptotic formula, providing a rigorous bound for its relative error.

Abstract:We report a continuous transition from outwardly rotating spiral waves to antispirals in the complex Ginzburg- Landau equation. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the normal spiral to antispiral transition is fulfilled through a rest spiral wave with zero propagation speed. The propagation direction of spiral waves and the power law behaviour close to the transition boundary are examined.

Abstract:We present a detailed analytical and numerical study of nonequilibrium dynamics for the complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation. In particular, we characterize evolution morphologies using spiral defects. This paper (referred to as $\rm I$) is the first in a two-stage exposition. Here, we present analytical results for the correlation function arising from a single-spiral morphology. We also critically examine the utility of the Gaussian auxiliary field (GAF) ansatz in characterizing a multi-spiral morphology. In the next paper of this exposition (referred to as $\rm II$), we will present detailed numerical results.

Abstract:In ultrafast optics, optical pulses are generated to be of shorter pulse duration, which has enormous significance to industrial applications and scientific research. The ultrashort pulse evolution in fiber lasers can be described by the higher-order Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation. However, analytic soliton solutions for this equation have not been obtained by use of existing methods. In this paper, a novel method is proposed to deal with this equation. The analytic soliton solution is obtained for the first time, and is proved to be stable against amplitude perturbations. Through the split-step Fourier method, the bright soliton solution is studied numerically. The analytic results here may extend the integrable methods, and could be used to study soliton dynamics for some equations in other disciplines. It may also provide the other way to obtain two-soliton solutions for higher-order GL equations.

Abstract:The response of spiral waves to external perturbations in a stable regime of the two-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE) is investigated. It is shown that the spiral core has a finite mobility and performs Brownian motion when driven by white noise. Combined with simulation results, this suggests that defect-free and quasifrozen states in the noiseless CGLE are susceptible to unpaired vortex excitation at any nonzero noise strength.

Abstract:We prove existence of spiral waves in oscillatory media with nonlocal coupling. Our starting point is a nonlocal complex Ginzburg-Landau (cGL) equation, rigorously derived as an amplitude equation for integro-differential equations undergoing a Hopf bifurcation. Because this reduced equation includes higher order terms that are usually ignored in a formal derivation of the cGL, the solutions we find also correspond to solutions of the original nonlocal system. To prove existence of these patterns we use perturbation methods together with the implicit function theorem. Within appropriate parameter regions, we find that spiral wave patterns have wavenumbers, $\kappa$, with expansion $\kappa \sim C e^{-a/\varepsilon}$, where $a$ is a positive constant, $\varepsilon$ is the small bifurcation parameter, and the positive constant $C$ depends on the strength and spread of the nonlocal coupling. The main difficulty we face comes from the linear operators appearing in our system of equations. Due to the symmetries present in the system, and because the equations are posed on the plane, these maps have a zero eigenvalue embedded in their essential spectrum. Therefore, they are not invertible when defined between standard Sobolev spaces and a straightforward application of the implicit function theorem is not possible. We surpass this difficulty by redefining the domain of these operators using doubly weighted Sobolev spaces. These spaces encode algebraic decay/growth properties of functions, near the origin and in the far field, and allow us to recover Fredholm properties for these maps.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the motion of spiral waves in the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE) analytically and numerically. We find that the tip of the spiral wave drifts primarily in the direction of the electric field and there is a smaller component of the drift that is perpendicular to the field when a uniform field is applied to the system. The velocity of the tip is uniform and its component along the electric field is equal to the strength of the field. When the CGLE system is driven by white noise, a diffusion law for the vortex core of the spiral wave is derived at long time explicitly. The diffusion constant is found to be D=T/C(2), in which T is the noise strength and C is the core asymptotic factor of the spiral wave. When the external force is a simple oscillation we find that the tip of the spiral wave drifts if the frequency of the external force is the same as that of the system. Our analytical results are verified using numerical simulations.

Abstract:We consider the Ginzburg-Landau equation in the plane linearized around the standard degree-one vortex solution $W(x)=w(r)e^{i\theta}$. Using explicit representation formulae for the Fourier modes in $\theta$, we obtain sharp estimates for the inverse of the linearized operator which hold for a large class of right-hand sides. This theory can be applied, for example, to estimate the inverse after dropping the usual orthogonality conditions.

Abstract:The time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations describing a d-wave superconductor are simulated by the finite-element method. The equilibrium vortex structure in bulk samples, the nature of vortices in bulk and finite-size samples subject to various types of pinnings, and the transport behaviors are addressed. The extended finite-element method proves to be flexible to deal with various types of boundary conditions, desirable to simulate relaxation processes with very long time scales as well as the dynamics of vortices, especially in high-kappa superconductors.
