Abstract:This study aims to prepare biodegradable films from cassava starch, poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), and montmorillonite (MMT) using blow-extrusion process and analyze the effects of different types and concentrations of MMT on the microstructure, physicochemical, and mechanical properties of the resulting films. The films were produced by blending 30% of PBAT with glycerol (17.5%), starch (49.0-52.5%), and four different types of montmorillonite (Cloisite® Na+, 10A, 15A, and 30B) at two different concentrations (1.75% and 3.5%). All the films prepared in this study showed an increase in the basal spacing of MMT layers. In particular, the films with 10A and 30B showed the highest increase in intercalation basal spacing, suggesting the formation of intercalated composites. The addition of nanoclays decreased the elongation of films. The addition of Cloisite® 10A resulted in films with the lowest WVP values and the highest stability to water adsorption under different RH conditions.

Abstract:Biodegradable compositions of polylactic acid (PLA) and thermoplasticized starch (TPS) were prepared using in situ compatibilization process using a twin screw extruder followed by extrusion blown film process. TPS obtained from maize and cassava starch were blended with PLA to prepare the PLA/TPS blend at variable content ranging from 5 to 30 wt%. In situ compatibilization was accomplished with chemical grafting of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) in the presence of benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as free radical initiator. An in depth study on the morphological, mechanical, barrier, optical and antislip properties of blown films were evaluated. FTIR analysis showed the interaction between PLA and TPS phase in presence of GMA. The thermal analysis employing DSC confirmed increased crystallization rate of PLA with the incorporation of TPS. Mechanical properties reported a moderate decrease in tensile modulus and strength compared to virgin PLA films. However, the percentage of elongation of the films containing 30 wt% of both cassava and maize starch increased to the tune of 68.62%; 144.4% and 25.49%; 38.8% respectively in the machine and transverse direction respectively. The films also exhibited improved permeability of oxygen to the tune of 41.7% and 38.1%. Furthermore, a twofold increment in water vapour permeability was observed for both cassava and maize starch films obtained from 30 wt% of TPS loadings.

Abstract:Biodegradable ternary blend films of nucleated polylactide (PLA), poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), and thermoplastic starch (TPS) with the presence of nucleating agent and compatibilizer were prepared via a twin screw extruder. The effects of compatibilizer types and starch contents on the thermal, morphological, and tensile properties of these blend films were evaluated. Two types of compatibilizer (methylene diphenyldiisocyanate (MDI) and polylactide-graft-maleic anhydride (PLA-g-MA)) were used for enhancing an interfacial adhesion of the blends, whereas TPS from tapioca starch was added as a filler at various concentrations (0 to 40 wt%). In addition, talc and PBAT acted as a nucleating agent and a flexible polymer were fixed at 1 phr and 10 wt%, respectively. The results indicated that the thermal stability of the blend films was affected from the presence of compatibilizer and TPS. In addition, the tensile properties and compatibility of PLA, PBAT, and TPS blends were improved with the addition of compatibilizer compared to uncompatibilized blend films as evidenced by SEM results. Furthermore, the blend films with MDI gave higher mechanical properties than those with PLA-g-MA at all compositions. The water absorption of the ternary blend films was evidently increased when the TPS amount was increased; in contrast, tensile strength and elongation at break (EB) of these blend films were significantly decreased.

Abstract:The development and production of thermoplastic starch (TPS) films based on blown film extrusion have been spurred by increasing interest in renewable resources and an alternative solution to meet industrial-scale demand. The chemical structure of the plasticizer and its proportion have a significant effect on the mechanical and barrier properties of TPS films. Therefore, this research aims to evaluate the influence of plasticizer type and content on the performance of TPS blown films. TPS films were prepared by mixing cassava starch with three types of plasticizer, i.e. glycerol, glycerol/xylitol, and glycerol/sorbitol with a weight ratio of 1:1. The quantity of plasticizer varied among 38, 40, and 42 parts per hundred parts of starch. Although TPS films plasticized with the small-sized plasticizer glycerol were easily processed and extensible, the surface stickiness leading to single-wall films, low tensile strength, and poor water vapor barrier properties would limit their use. By replacing glycerol with larger-sized plasticizers such as xylitol or sorbitol, the films exhibited reduced stickiness and separable double walls and showed improved tensile strength, stiffness, and water vapor and oxygen barrier properties. The obtained TPS blown films offer potential applications as edible films for food and pharmaceutical products.

Abstract:Development of home compostable materials based on bioavailable polymers is of high strategic interest as they ensure a significant reduction of the environmental footprint in many production sectors. In this work, the addition of thermoplastic starch to binary PLA/PBAT blends was studied. The compounds were obtained by a reactive extrusion process by means of a co-rotating twin screw extruder. Thermomechanical, physical and chemical characterization tests were carried out to highlight the effectiveness of the material design strategy. The compounds were subsequently reprocessed by cast extrusion and thermoforming in order to obtain products suitable for the storage of hot food. The extruded films and the thermoformed containers were further characterized to highlight their thermo-mechanical, physical and chemical properties. Thermo-rheological, mechanical and physical properties of the material and of the cast film were analyzed thoroughly using combined technique as capillary rheometer, MFI, DSC, VICAT/HDT, XRD, FTIR, UV-Vis, SEM, permeability and, lastly, running preliminary chemical inertness and biodegradation tests. Particular attention was also devoted to the evaluation of the thermo-mechanical resistance of the thermoformed containers, where the PLA/PBAT/TPS blends proved to be very effective, also presenting a high disintegration rate in ambient conditions.

Abstract:Starch is considered as the most promising material of biodegradable polymer films. However, up to date, the preparation of starch film by film blowing technique is still a challenge. Herein, cassava starch, glycerol and nano-silica (nano-SiO2) were used to prepare thermoplastic starch (TPS) films by film blowing technique. The effects of glycerol and nano-SiO2 on the mechanical properties, thermal properties and structure of TPS films were investigated. The results showed that the elongation at break of the TPS film with 40 parts of glycerol per 100 parts of dried starch (40 phs glycerol) was up to 108%. After the addition of 1 part of nano-SiO2 per 100 parts of dried starch (1 phs nano-SiO2), the tensile strength significantly increased by about 95%, while the elongation at break did not decrease. The thermal stability of starch increased with the increase of glycerol and nano-SiO2, while its melting transition temperature did not change significantly. The crystalline structure of starch changed after processing, and the crystallinity of starch decreased with increasing glycerol and nano-SiO2.

Abstract:Bioplastic films with excellent barrier properties were successfully prepared from poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PBAT), thermoplastic starch (TPS), and poly((R)‐3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐(R)‐3‐hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx). The rheological, mechanical, barrier, dynamic mechanical properties, and microstructure of the PBAT/TPS/PHBHHx films were studied. The transition of the continuous phase in the blend significantly affects the properties of the films. The increase in PHBHHx content results in its transition from a dispersed phase to a continuous phase. This phase transition, along with the consequent increase in the crystallinity of PHBHHx, greatly enhances the barrier properties of the film. The percentage crystalline degree of PHBHHx increased from 10.9% to 25.1% with increasing PHBHHx content from 0% to 50%. The film containing 50% PHBHHx showed a significant decrease in both water vapor permeability (WVP) and oxygen permeability (OP) by 75.1% and 69.6%, respectively. It found that the film containing 50% PHBHHx exhibited a decrease of elongation at break from 505% to less than 10% but an unusual increase of tensile strength after a 72‐hour aging test, which is different from PBAT and PBAT/TPS films. However, this indicates that the extensibility of PHBHHx is more susceptible to the effects of aging test, leading to the rearrangement of polymer chains from disordered to ordered morphology.

Abstract:Thermoplastic starch (TPS) films are considered one of the most promising alternatives for replacing synthetic polymers in the packaging field due to the starch biodegradability, low cost, and abundant availability. However, starch granule composition, expressed in terms of amylose content and phosphate monoesters, and molecular weight of starch clearly affects some film properties. In this contribution, biodegradable TPS films made from potato, corn, wheat, and rice starch were prepared using the casting technique. The effect of the grain structure of each starch on microstructure, transparency, hydration properties, crystallinity, and mechanical properties of the films, was evaluated. Potato starch films were the most transparent and corn starch films the most opaque. All the films had homogeneous internal structures—highly amorphous and with no pores, both of which point to a good starch gelatinization process. The maximum tensile strength (4.48–8.14 MPa), elongation at break (35.41–100.34%), and Young’s modulus (116.42–294.98 MPa) of the TPS films were clearly influenced by the amylose content, molecular weight, and crystallinity of the film. In this respect, wheat and corn starch films, are the most resistant and least stretchable, while rice starch films are the most extensible but least resistant. These findings show that all the studied starches can be considered suitable for manufacturing resistant and flexible films with similar properties to those of synthetic low-density polyethylene (LDPE), by a simple and environmentally-friendly process.

Abstract:Biodegradable films of starch, poly butylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT), and glycerol, containing pomegranate peel extract (PPE) and potassium sorbate (PS) as antimicrobial agents, were produced by blow extrusion. Films with and without PS presented similar isotherms, and there was no difference in water vapor permeability, which ranged from 2.45.10−9 to 2.99.10−9 g m−1 Pa−1 d−1. Films with PS and PPE had lower solubility coefficient, higher diffusion coefficient, lower tension at rupture and elastic modulus, and higher elongation than those without antimicrobial agents (control). Furthermore, films with PS and PPE had excellent processability, good mechanical properties, and water vapor barrier properties compatible with other biodegradable materials containing starch.

Abstract:ABSTRACTThe polylactide (PLA) was blended with poly(1,2‐propylene glycol adipate) (PPA) and poly(butylene carbonate) (PBC). Then the extruded PLA/PPA/PBC blends were processed in the form of blown films. All of the ingredients used in the films are biodegradable. The miscibility, fracture surface morphology, and rheological properties of the PLA/PPA/PBC blends, further thermal properties, the tear‐fracture surface morphology, crystalline morphology, and mechanical and optical properties of the blown films were investigated. PPA did not enhance the miscibility between PLA and PBC. From SEM micrographs of the cryogenically fracture surfaces, PBC particles evenly dispersed in the PLA matrix. It could increase the nucleating density of the spherulites and decrease the size of the spherulites of PLA. The results indicated that the 85.5/9.5/5 PLA/PPA/PBC film had excellent tensile strength, elongation at break, tear strength, and transmittancy. The shear yielding induced by cavitation of PBC particles was the major tearing mechanism during the film tear test. The enzymatic degradation of PLA was slightly retarded in the presence of both PPA and PBC. These findings contribute new knowledge to the additives area and give important implications for manufacturing biodegradable polymer packaging materials.

Abstract:Mater-Bi® is one of the most commercialized starch-based blends used in biodegradable flexible packaging. However, the high ductility and low stiffness of Mater-Bi® might limit its application and developing a solution to tailor the stiffness and mechanical strength is highly desirable. In the present work, blends based on Mater-Bi® and poly-L-(lactic acid) (PLLA) at a different ratio from 70/30 to 50/50 wt% were prepared via melt-extrusion and the effect of the PLLA content and Joncryl ADR® as a reactive compatibilizing agent, on the mechanical properties, melts rheology, morphology and disintegration aptitude were investigated. The inclusion of PLLA in Mater-Bi® has a marked beneficial effect on the tensile strength and stiffness of the blend while maintaining acceptable ductility. The addition of the reactive compatibilizing agent contributed to improving the strength and elongation at the break of the blend. The melt rheology of the blend was also affected by the ratio of the two components, mostly when the Joncryl ADR® was present. The disintegration by biodegradation of the blend was preserved in the presence of PLLA, and it takes less than 30 days for the films to completely decompose and disintegrate under controlled composting conditions. Interestingly, a thin film from Mater-Bi®/PLLA 60/40 was successfully prepared by blown film extrusion, demonstrating a good balance between stretchability (elongation at break exceeding 100%) and stiffness (1.8 GPa). This work opened to broadening the use of starch-based biodegradable plastic toward more demanding applications such as mulching films.

Abstract:In order to improve the properties of biodegradable polylactide (PLA), mixtures with polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT) were prepared. PLA is a bio-based and renewable biodegradable material, made from starch. PBAT is a biodegradable polyester for compostable film. In order to improve the composite properties, two types of additives were implemented via melt mixing, a chain extender (CE) and montmorillonite (MMT). CE was used as an interfacial modifier to enhance the adhesion between components. Montmorillonite is a widely studied clay added to polymer nanocomposites. Due to the lamellar structure, it improves the barrier properties of materials. PLA/PBAT films were oriented in the extrusion process and the amounts of filler introduced into the PLA/PBAT nanocomposites were 1.0, 3.0, and 5.0%. The improvement in the PLA barrier properties by the addition of PBAT and 5% of MMT was confirmed as the oxygen permeability decreased almost by a factor of 3. The addition of the biodegradable polymer, chain extender, montmorillonite, and the implemented orientation process resulted in a decrease in composite viscosity and an increase in the PLA crystallinity percentage (up to 25%), and the wettability tests confirmed the synergic behavior of the selected polymer blend.

Abstract:The thermal, rheological, mechanical, and barrier properties of flat biopolymeric films processed by extrusion with different proportions of plasticizer and surfactant were evaluated. In the first stage, pellets were developed through twin-screw extrusion using a temperature profile in the ascending step process. These samples were analyzed using rotational rheology analysis to understand the viscoelastic transitions through the behavior of the storage and loss modulus, as well as the incidence of complex viscosity concerning concentration. The interaction among the components was analyzed under infrared spectroscopy after the two processing stages, revealing the miscibility of the mixture due to the action of the surfactant. The degradation temperatures increased by more than 20 °C, generating thermal stability, and the temperatures related to polymer transitions were determined. In the second stage, co-extrusion was carried out using pellets from the blend with a melt flow index (MFI) suitable for this process. The samples TPS50-PLA50-T5 and TPS75-PLA25-T5-A10 presented MFI values of 2.27 and 1.72 g/10 min, respectively. These samples were co-extruded for the production of films, impacting the physical properties. The resistance to traction, Young's modulus, and elongation showed limited effectiveness of plasticizer and surfactant, with high resistance and elongation values (4.276 MPa and 2.63%) in the TPS50-PLA50-T5 film. Additionally, morphological analysis showed the detailed action of the plasticizer on the regular shapes of threads as a product of deformation during material processing. The barrel properties exhibited limited biopolymer–plastic–tensile miscibility, resulting in different water vapor permeability for the TPS75-PLA25-T5-A10 film on each side (a difference of two orders of magnitude). The contact angle corroborated the effect, with values in each case ranging from 103.7° to 30.3°. In conclusion, we assert that biopolymeric films, when modified with plasticizers and surfactants, can be tailored for various applications within the packaging sector while maintaining control over each film.

Abstract:Starches plasticized with glycerol/citric acid/stearic acid and tributyl 2-acetylcitrate (ATBC), respectively, were processed with poly (butylene adipate-Co-terephthalate (PBAT) via extrusion and a film-blown process. All the composite films were determined for morphology, mechanical, thermal stability, crystalline, and optical properties. Results show that the most improved morphology was in the 30% glycerol plasticized PBAT/thermoplastic starch (TPS) composite films, characterized by the smallest and narrowest distribution of TPS particle sizes and a more uniform dispersion of TPS particles. However, the water absorption of PBAT/TPS composite films plasticized with glycerol surpassed that observed with ATBC as a plasticizer. Mechanical properties indicated insufficient plasticization of the starch crystal structure when using 10% ATBC, 20% ATBC, and 20% glycerol as plasticizers, leading to poor compatibility between PBAT and TPS. This resulted in stress concentration points under external forces, adversely affecting the mechanical properties of the composites. All PBAT/TPS composite films exhibited a negative impact on the initial thermal decomposition temperature compared to PBAT. Additionally, the haze value of PBAT/TPS composite films exceeded 96%, while pure PBAT had a haze value of 47.42%. Films plasticized with 10% ATBC, 20% ATBC, and 20% glycerol displayed lower transmittance values in the visible light region. The increased transmittance of films plasticized with 30% glycerol further demonstrated their superior plasticizing effect compared to other PBAT/TPS composite films. This study provides a simple and feasible method for preparing low-cost PBAT composites, and their extensions are expected to further replace general-purpose plastics in daily applications.

Abstract:The present study aimed to produce thermoplastic starch films with different concentrations of thermoplastic pectin and the addition of 4% lignin microparticles as a reinforcing and active agent. The pectin improved the modulus of elasticity, and decreased the elongation at break. In addition, it improved the UV light protection to 100% at 320 nm and 95.9% at 400 nm. The incorporation of lignin microparticles improved the thermal stability of the blends made with 25% and 50% thermoplastic pectin when compared to the pectin-free blends. The blend with 25% thermoplastic pectin led to an increase of 75.8% and 34% in elongation at break and deformation of the films, respectively. This blend also improved the UV light protection to 100% due to its dark brown color. Regarding the permeability properties, the films with 25% and 50% thermoplastic pectin showed lower oxygen permeability (48% and 65%) and an increase in the antioxidant activities from 2.7% to 71.08% and 4.1% to 79.28%, respectively. Thus, the polymer blend with 25% thermoplastic pectin with the incorporation of lignin microparticles proved to be a good alternative for use in foods sensitive to the effects of oxygen and UV light.

Abstract:Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was melt mixed in a laboratory extruder with poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) in the presence of polypropylene glycol di glycidyl ether (EJ400) that acted as both plasticizer and compatibilizer. The process was then scaled up in a semi-industrial extruder preparing pellets having different content of a nucleating agent (LAK). All of the formulations could be processed by blowing extrusion and the obtained films showed mechanical properties dependent on the LAK content. In particular the tearing strength showed a maximum like trend in the investigated composition range. The films prepared with both kinds of blends showed a tensile strength in the range 12-24 MPa, an elongation at break in the range 150-260% and a significant crystallinity.

Abstract:When associated with polymer blends, starch may improve the biodegradability and compostability of other materials. The objectives of this work were to evaluate the abiotic hydrolysis and the composting process of films obtained from polymer blends between thermoplastic starch (TPS) and three other biodegradable polymers: poly[(butylene adipate)- co -(terephthalate)] (PBAT), poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). PVA/TPS stood out as the most homogeneous blend and the one that showed the highest weight loss, with 46.21% of its initial weight remaining after abiotic hydrolysis tests. On the other hand, PBAT/TPS and PLA/TPS underwent more drastic and rapid degradation during composting in contrast to PVA/TPS. They became very fragmented after 21 days of composting, while the PVA/TPS was visually modified but remained unbroken until day 70. No blend sample exerted negative effects on the quality of the compost.

Abstract:Polylactic acid/thermoplastic starch/poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PLA/TPS/PBAT) blend is a promising biodegradable material for flexible packaging applications. However, this material still has insufficient mechanical and gas barrier properties for flexible packaging applications due to the immiscibility and random molecular orientation of the polymers. The objective of this work was to improve the performance of the blend using the biaxial stretching process. The effect of the biaxial stretching parameters (stretching rate and annealing time) on the morphological, mechanical, thermal, and gas barrier properties of PLA/TPS/PBAT (40/40/20) films was investigated. The stretching rate and annealing time were varied in the ranges of 22.5–300 mm/s and 0–180 s, respectively. The biaxial stretching parameters affected the morphology of the stretched films of PLA/TPS/PBAT blend. Results obtained from X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry revealed that biaxial stretching increased ordered structure and crystallinity of PLA and PBAT. For unannealed stretched films, increasing the stretching rate from 22.5 to 300 mm/s led to reduced crystal sizes of PLA, from 17.1 to 9.0 nm, and PBAT, from 17.6 to 12.3 nm. However, increasing the annealing time enlarged the crystals of both polyesters, especially PLA. The crystallinity of biaxially oriented films determined from PLA increased with stretching rate and annealing time, from 6 up to 34%. The increased ordered structure and crystallinity of PLA/TPS/PBAT films led to improved tensile strength and oxygen barrier property, approximately twofold and tenfold, respectively, when biaxial stretching was performed at a stretching rate of 150 mm/s and annealing time of 60 s.

Abstract:A flexible film was obtained from a blend of cassava thermoplastic starch and polylactic acid, using maleic anhydride as coupling agent. For this, an experimental design with three factors was used: polylactic acid content, coupling agent content, and temperature profile of the blown extrusion. It was found that the three factors generated significant differences on the response variables of tensile mechanical properties individually as in their triple interaction. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used by understanding the behavior of thermal properties of TPS/PLA blends with and without coupling agent, finding similar results between both. From this, the combination with 28% polylactic acid, 0.87% coupling agent, and 155.75°C temperature profile permitted the obtaining of a material with outstanding mechanical properties and offered advantages from the economic point of view.

Abstract:Biodegradable materials are used in the manufacture of packaging and compostable films and various types of medical products. They have demonstrated a large number of potential practical applications in medicine and particularly in the treatment of various cardiac, vascular, and orthopedic conditions in adults as well in children. In our research, the extrusion-cooking technique was applied to prepare thermoplastic starch (TPS), which was then utilized to obtain environmentally friendly starch-based films. Potato starch was the basic raw material exploited. Polyvinyl alcohol and keratin were used as functional additives in amounts from 0.5 to 3%, while 20% of glycerol was harnessed as a plasticizer. The processing of the thermoplastic starch employed a single screw extruder-cooker with an L/D ratio of 16. The film blowing process was carried out using a film-blowing laboratory line with L/D = 36. FTIR Spectroscopy was applied for the assignment of the prominent functional groups. The results showed that the processing efficiency of thermoplastic starch with functional additives varied depending on the level of polyvinyl alcohol and keratin addition. Moreover, the FTIR data correlated with the changes in the physical properties of the tested films. The analysis of FTIR spectra revealed several changes in the intensity of bands originating from stretching vibrations characteristic of the –OH substituent. The changes observed depended on the presence/lack of the hydrogen bonding occurring upon interactions between the starch molecules and the various additives used. In addition, notable changes were observed in bands assigned to glycoside bonds in the starch.
