Abstract:Background: Bran-computer interface (BCI) is an important technique used in brain science. However, the large size of equipment and wires severely limit its practical applications. New Methods: This study presents a wearable system with bidirectional brain-computer interface based on Wi-Fi technology, which can be used for olfactory electrophysiological recording and animal motion control. Results: On the "brain-to-computer" side, the results show that the wireless system can record high-quality olfactory electrophysiological signals for over a month. By analyzing the recorded data, we find that the same mitral/tufted (M/T) cells can be activated by many odorants and different M/T cells can be activated by a single odorant. Further, we find neurons in dorsal lateral OB are highly sensitive to isoamyl acetate. On the "computerto-brain" side, the results show that we can efficiently control rats' motions by applying electrical stimulations to electrodes implanted in specific brain regions. Comparison with existing methods: Most existing wireless BCI systems are designed for either recording or stimulating while our system is a bidirectional BCI featured with both functions. Taking advantage of our years of experience in olfactory decoding, we developed the first wireless system for olfactory electrophysiological recording and animal motion control. It provides high-quality recording and efficient motion control for a long time. Conclusions: The system provides possibility of practical SCI applications, such as in vivo bioelectronic nose and "rat-robot".

Abstract:This paper introduces a wirelessly powered scattered neural recording wearable system that can facilitate continuous, untethered, and long-term electroencephalogram (EEG) recording. The proposed system, including 32 standalone EEG recording devices and a central controller, is incorporated in a wearable form factor. The standalone devices are sparsely distributed on the scalp, allowing for flexible placement and varying quantities to provide extensive spatial coverage and scalability. Each standalone device featuring a low-power EEG recording application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) wirelessly receives power through a 60 MHz inductive link. The low-power ASIC design (84.6 μW) ensures sufficient wireless power reception through a small receiver (Rx) coil. The 60 MHz inductive link also serves as the data carrier for wireless communication between standalone devices and the central controller, eliminating the need for additional data antennas. All these efforts contribute to the miniaturization of standalone devices with dimensions of 12 × 12 × 5 mm3, enhancing device wearability. The central controller applies the pulse width modulation (PWM) scheme on the 60 MHz carrier, transmitting user commands at 4 Mbps to EEG recording ASICs. The ASIC employs a novel synchronized PWM demodulator to extract user commands, operating signal digitization and data transmission. The analog frontend (AFE) amplifies the EEG signal with a gain of 45 dB and applies band-pass filtering from 0.03 Hz to 400 Hz, with an input-referred noise (IRN) of 3.62 μVRMS. The amplified EEG signal is then digitized by a 10-bit successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with a peak signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SNDR) of 55.4 dB. The resulting EEG data is transmitted to an external software-defined radio (SDR) Rx through load-shift-keying (LSK) backscatter at 3.75 Mbps. The system's functionality is fully evaluated in human experiments.

Abstract:This paper presents an Intelligent Electrodes and Active Cable based wearable medical system. Within each Intelligent Electrode, an Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) is integrated which includes a gain-bandwidth selectable analog front-end circuit, an 8-bit SAR ADC and a digital controller. The key of the ASIC is the analog front-end circuit with tunable gain and bandwidth which can be configured for Electrocardiogram (ECG), Electroencephalogram (EEG) or Electromyogram (EMG) measurement. Common mode interference is effectively rejected due to the circuit's high Common Mode Rejection Ratio (CMRR), which is higher than 135 dB up to 100 Hz and better than 110dB up to 1 kHz. Since a dedicated data transmission protocol is implemented on chip, the Intelligent Electrodes can establish a self-organized network and perform synchronous measurements for multiple bio-signals.

Abstract:Wireless neural-recording instruments eliminate the bulky cables in multi-channel signal transmission, while the system size should be reduced to mitigate the impact on freely-moving animals. As the battery usually dominates the system size, the neural-recording chip should be low power to minimize the battery in long-termly monitoring. In general, a neural-recording chip consists of an analog front end (AFE) and an 8 bit $-$ 10 bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC), while it's challenging to design an ADC with an 8 $-$ 10 effective number of bits (ENOB) and sub- $\mu$ W power consumption due to the kickback noise. In this work, we propose a kickback-reduction technique for a successive-approximation-register (SAR) ADC based on neural-recording chip. Fabricated in 65 nm CMOS process, the proposed technique reduce the ADC power to 315 nW, resulting in an 8-channel neural-recording chip with 249 $\mu$ W in total. Measured results show that the chip achieves an ADC ENOB of 9.73 bits, as well as an AFE gain of 43.3 dB and input-referred noise (IRN) of 9.68 $\mu V_{rms}$ in a bandwidth of 0.9 Hz $-$ 7.2 kHz. Combined with a BLE chip and a PCB antenna, the chip is implemented into a 2.6 g wireless headstage system (w/o battery), and an in-vivo demonstration is conducted on a male Sprague-Dawley rat with Parkinson's disease. The headstage system transfers the in-vivo neural signals to a commodity smartphone through BLE, and the miniature size induces little impact on freely-moving activities.

Abstract:Reliable, multi-channel neural recording is critical to the neuroscience research and clinical treatment. However, most hardware development of fully integrated, multi-channel wireless neural recorders to-date, is still in the proof-of-concept stage. To be ready for practical use, the trade-offs between performance, power consumption, device size, robustness, and compatibility need to be carefully taken into account. This paper presents an optimized wireless compressed sensing neural signal recording system. The system takes advantages of both custom integrated circuits and universal compatible wireless solutions. The proposed system includes an implantable wireless system-on-chip (SoC) and an external wireless relay. The SoC integrates 16-channel low-noise neural amplifiers, programmable filters and gain stages, a SAR ADC, a real-time compressed sensing module, and a near field wireless power and data transmission link. The external relay integrates a 32 bit low-power microcontroller with Bluetooth 4.0 wireless module, a programming interface, and an inductive charging unit. The SoC achieves high signal recording quality with minimized power consumption, while reducing the risk of infection from through-skin connectors. The external relay maximizes the compatibility and programmability. The proposed compressed sensing module is highly configurable, featuring a SNDR of 9.78 dB with a compression ratio of 8×. The SoC has been fabricated in a 180 nm standard CMOS technology, occupying 2.1 mm × 0.6 mm silicon area. A pre-implantable system has been assembled to demonstrate the proposed paradigm. The developed system has been successfully used for long-term wireless neural recording in freely behaving rhesus monkey.
The Monocyte/Macrophage Infiltrate in 35 Medulloblastomas: A Paraffin-Wax Study

Abstract:We have studied formalin fixed, paraffin-wax embedded tissue from 35 medulloblastomas, collected over 23 years (27 non-desmoplastic and 8 desmoplastic) with KP1 and Mac387 two monoclonal anti-monocytes/macrophage (M/Ms) antibodies recommended for use on paraffin wax embedded tissue. In non-desmoplastic medulloblastomas, outside areas of necrosis, M/Ms were detected in 50% of cases with KP1 and 52% with Mac387. M/Ms were seen In 100% of desmoplastic medulloblastomas with both antibodies. Semiquantitative assessment revealed that, on average, desmoplastic tumors had at least three times as many Infiltrating M/Ms as non-desmoplastic tumors. There was no significant difference in the findings with the two antibodies or, between recently embedded and « older » tumors. The findings may be indicative of the presence of a host M/Ms immune response in medulloblastoma, which may be more accentuated in desmoplastic medulloblastomas. Furthermore, we conclude that these antibodies are quite suitable for the study of infiltrating M/Ms, thus lessening (but not obviating) the need for frozen tissue for immunohistological studies.

Abstract:Introduction: The collection and process of human brain activity signals play an essential role in developing brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. A portable electroencephalogram (EEG) device has become an important tool for monitoring brain activity and diagnosing mental diseases. However, the miniaturization, portability, and scalability of EEG recorder are the current bottleneck in the research and application of BCI. Methods: For scalp EEG and other applications, the current study designs a 32-channel EEG recorder with a sampling rate up to 30 kHz and 16-bit accuracy, which can meet both the demands of scalp and intracranial EEG signal recording. A fully integrated electrophysiology microchip RHS2116 controlled by FPGA is employed to build the EEG recorder, and the design meets the requirements of high sampling rate, high transmission rate and channel extensive. Results: The experimental results show that the developed EEG recorder provides a maximum 30 kHz sampling rate and 58 Mbps wireless transmission rate. The electrophysiological experiments were performed on scalp and intracranial EEG collection. An inflatable helmet with adjustable contact impedance was designed, and the pressurization can improve the SNR by approximately 4 times, the average accuracy of steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) was 93.12%. Animal experiments were also performed on rats, and spike activity was captured successfully. Conclusion: The designed multichannel wireless EEG collection system is simple and comfort, the helmet-EEG recorder can capture the bioelectric signals without noticeable interference, and it has high measurement performance and great potential for practical application in BCI systems.

Abstract:Biosensor monitoring systems have been attracted great interest, stimulated by recent, significant advances in electronic, communications and information technologies. For instance, electroencephalography (EEG) is the most studied potential non-invasive interface in brain-computer interface (BCI), a hot topic aiming at creating a direct link between the brain and a computer. However, most BCI systems use bulky and wired EEG measurements, which is uncomfortable and inconvenient for users to perform daily-life tasks in. To address this concern, in this paper, we develop a wearable, wireless EEG acquisition and recording system, including a data acquisition unit and a data transmission and receiving unit. Our testing results show that the proposed design is effective with high common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR). The developed EEG system is suitable for biomedical applications such as patient monitoring and BCI.
An Ultra-Low-Noise, Low Power and Miniaturized Dual-Channel Wireless Neural Recording Microsystem

Abstract:As the basic tools for neuroscience research, invasive neural recording devices can obtain high-resolution neuronal activity signals through electrodes connected to the subject’s brain. Existing wireless neural recording devices are large in size or need external large-scale equipment for wireless power supply, which limits their application. Here, we developed an ultra-low-noise, low power and miniaturized dual-channel wireless neural recording microsystem. With the full-differential front-end structure of the dual operational amplifiers (op-amps), the noise level and power consumption are notably reduced. The hierarchical microassembly technology, which integrates wafer-level packaged op-amps and the miniaturized Bluetooth module, dramatically reduces the size of the wireless neural recording microsystem. The microsystem shows a less than 100 nV/Hz ultra-low noise level, about 10 mW low power consumption, and 9 × 7 × 5 mm3 small size. The neural recording ability was then demonstrated in saline and a chronic rat model. Because of its miniaturization, it can be applied to freely behaving small animals, such as rats. Its features of ultra-low noise and high bandwidth are conducive to low-amplitude neural signal recording, which may help advance neuroscientific discovery.

Abstract:A portable multi-channel telemetry system which can be used for brain stimulation and neuronal activity recording in freely behaving small animals is described here. This system consists of three major components of headstage, backpack and portable Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). The headstage contains high precision instrument amplifiers with high input impedance. The backpack is comprised of two parts: (1) a main board (size: 36 mm × 22 mm × 3.5 mm and weight: 40 g with batteries, 20 g without), with current/voltage stimulator and special circuit suitable for neuronal activity recording and (2) and a bluetooth transceiver, with a high data transmission rate up to 70 kb/s, suitable for downloading stimulation commands and uploading acquired data. We recorded neuronal activities of the primary motor area of a freely behaving rat with 12-bit resolution at 12 k samples/s. The recorded data and analysis results showed that the system was successful by comparing with the commercial equipment Cerebus™ 128-Channel Data Acquisition System (Cyberkinetics Inc.). Using the PDA, we can control stimulation and recording. It provides a flexible method to do some research work in the circumstances where other approaches would be difficult or impossible.

Abstract:Neuromodulation through implantable pulse generators (IPGs) represents an important treatment approach for neurological disorders. While the field has observed the success of state-of-the-art interventions, such as deep brain stimulation (DBS) or responsive neurostimulation (RNS), implantable systems face various technical challenges, including the restriction of recording from a limited number of brain sites, power management, and limited external access to the assessed neural data in a continuous fashion. To the best of our knowledge, for the first time in this study, we investigated the feasibility of recording human intracranial EEG (iEEG) using a benchtop version of the Brain Interchange (BIC) unit of CorTec, which is a portable, wireless, and externally powered implant with sensing and stimulation capabilities. We developed a MATLAB/SIMULINK-based rapid prototyping environment and a graphical user interface (GUI) to acquire and visualize the iEEG captured from all 32 channels of the BIC unit. We recorded prolonged iEEG (~ 24 h) from three human subjects with externalized depth leads using the BIC and commercially available clinical amplifiers simultaneously in the epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU). The iEEG signal quality of both streams was compared, and the results demonstrated a comparable power spectral density (PSD) in all the systems in the low-frequency band (< 80 Hz). However, notable differences were primarily observed above 100 Hz, where the clinical amplifiers were associated with lower noise floor (BIC-17 dB vs. clinical amplifiers < − 25 dB). We employed an established spike detector to assess and compare the spike rates in each iEEG stream. We observed over 90% conformity between the spikes rates and their spatial distribution captured with BIC and clinical systems. Additionally, we quantified the packet loss characteristic in the iEEG signal during the wireless data transfer and conducted a series of simulations to compare the performance of different interpolation methods for recovering the missing packets in signals at different frequency bands. We noted that simple linear interpolation has the potential to recover the signal and reduce the noise floor with modest packet loss levels reaching up to 10%. Overall, our results indicate that while tethered clinical amplifiers exhibited noticeably better noise floor above 80 Hz, epileptic spikes can still be detected successfully in the iEEG recorded with the externally powered wireless BIC unit opening the road for future closed-loop neuromodulation applications with continuous access to brain activity.

Abstract:The integration of brain monitoring based on electroencephalography (EEG) into everyday life has been hindered by the limited portability and long setup time of current wearable systems as well as by the invasiveness of implanted systems (e.g. intracranial EEG). We explore the potential to record EEG in the ear canal, leading to a discreet, unobtrusive, and user-centered approach to brain monitoring. The in-the-ear EEG (Ear-EEG) recording concept is tested using several standard EEG paradigms, benchmarked against standard onscalp EEG, and its feasibility proven. Such a system promises a number of advantages, including fixed electrode positions, user comfort, robustness to electromagnetic interference, feedback to the user, and ease of use. The Ear-EEG platform could also support additional biosensors, extending its reach beyond EEG to provide a powerful health-monitoring system for those applications that require long recording periods in a natural environment.

Abstract:Most researchers acquired EEG by using standard measurement system like NeuroScan system, which includes AgCl electrode cap, SynAmps Amplifier and Scan software to provide good reliability for the acquisition of EEG data. However, it is still not convenient for Brain Computer Interface (BCI) application in daily life because of needing conduction gels to contact skins and being wired, expensive and heavy. Moreover, the conduction gel will trend to be drying, so it does not suitable for long-term monitoring. In this study, we developed a mobile and wireless EEG system. The system consists of frond-end 16-channel dry electrode cap, a miniature low-power wireless portable circuitry, and a back-end program receiving events and digital EEG data simultaneously. We demonstrate the recorded EEG data have high correlations between from our system and from NeuroScan system.
A 32-channel fully implantable wireless neurosensor for simultaneous recording from two cortical regions

Abstract:We present a fully implantable, wireless, neurosensor for multiple-location neural interface applications. The device integrates two independent 16-channel intracortical microelectrode arrays and can simultaneously acquire 32 channels of broadband neural data from two separate cortical areas. The system-on-chip implantable sensor is built on a flexible Kapton polymer substrate and incorporates three very low power subunits: two cortical subunits connected to a common subcutaneous subunit. Each cortical subunit has an ultra-low power 16-channel preamplifier and multiplexer integrated onto a cortical microelectrode array. The subcutaneous epicranial unit has an inductively coupled power supply, two analog-to-digital converters, a low power digital controller chip, and microlaser-based infrared telemetry. The entire system is soft encapsulated with biocompatible flexible materials for in vivo applications. Broadband neural data is conditioned, amplified, and analog multiplexed by each of the cortical subunits and passed to the subcutaneous component, where it is digitized and combined with synchronization data and wirelessly transmitted transcutaneously using high speed infrared telemetry.
A wireless and batteryless microsystem with implantable grid electrode/3-dimensional probe array for ECoG and extracellular neural recording in rats

Abstract:This paper presents the design and implementation of an integrated wireless microsystem platform that provides the possibility to support versatile implantable neural sensing devices in free laboratory rats. Inductive coupled coils with low dropout regulator design allows true long-term recording without limitation of battery capacity. A 16-channel analog front end chip located on the headstage is designed for high channel account neural signal conditioning with low current consumption and noise. Two types of implantable electrodes including grid electrode and 3D probe array are also presented for brain surface recording and 3D biopotential acquisition in the implanted target volume of tissue. The overall system consumes less than 20 mA with small form factor, 3.9 × 3.9 cm2 mainboard and 1.8 × 3.4 cm2 headstage, is packaged into a backpack for rats. Practical in vivo recordings including auditory response, brain resection tissue and PZT-induced seizures recording demonstrate the correct function of the proposed microsystem. Presented achievements addressed the aforementioned properties by combining MEMS neural sensors, low-power circuit designs and commercial chips into system-level integration.

Abstract:Electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring has served as a cornerstone in the diagnostic and therapeutic evaluation of epilepsy since its development. This has been accomplished with short-term inpatient video-EEG hospitalization enabling observation of both the semiological and the electrographic features of seizures or with short-term home ambulatory EEG or video-EEG. The advantages of inpatient video-EEG monitoring are limited by high cost, inconvenience, and inability to monitor patients for long periods (weeks or months) as might be done in the outpatient setting. This limitation has impelled the development of wearable EEG devices, which aim to capture high-quality long-term EEG data in a user-friendly and unobtrusive manner. This review article aims to summarize three broad categories of wearable EEG devices, including scalp, subcutaneous, and intracranial EEG. In this review, we will discuss the features of each type of device and the implications for the management of epilepsy. This review does not aim to describe every wearable EEG device on the market but instead seeks to provide a broad overview of the various categories of device that are available, giving examples of each and those in development (with no intention to recommend or advocate for any particular product).

Abstract:Brain recordings in large animal models and humans typically rely on a tethered connection, which has restricted the spectrum of accessible experimental and clinical applications. To overcome this limitation, we have engineered a compact, lightweight, high data rate wireless neurosensor capable of recording the full spectrum of electrophysiological signals from the cortex of mobile subjects. The wireless communication system exploits a spatially distributed network of synchronized receivers that is scalable to hundreds of channels and vast environments. To demonstrate the versatility of our wireless neurosensor, we monitored cortical neuron populations in freely behaving nonhuman primates during natural locomotion and sleep-wake transitions in ecologically equivalent settings. The interface is electrically safe and compatible with the majority of existing neural probes, which may support previously inaccessible experimental and clinical research.

Abstract:In the past few years it has been demonstrated that electroencephalography (EEG) can be recorded from inside the ear (in-ear EEG). To open the door to low-profile earpieces as wearable brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), this work presents a practical in-ear EEG device based on multiple dry electrodes, a user-generic design, and a lightweight wireless interface for streaming data and device programming. The earpiece is designed for improved ear canal contact across a wide population of users and is fabricated in a low-cost and scalable manufacturing process based on standard techniques such as vacuum forming, plasma-treatment, and spray coating. A 2.5 × 2.5 cm<sup>2</sup> wireless recording module is designed to record and stream data wirelessly to a host computer. Performance was evaluated on three human subjects over three months and compared with clinical-grade wet scalp EEG recordings. Recordings of spontaneous and evoked physiological signals, eye-blinks, alpha rhythm, and the auditory steady-state response (ASSR), are presented. This is the first wireless in-ear EEG to our knowledge to incorporate a dry multielectrode, user-generic design. The user-generic ear EEG recorded a mean alpha modulation of 2.17, outperforming the state-of-the-art in dry electrode in-ear EEG systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a portable wireless electrocorticography (ECoG) system. It uses a high resolution 32-channel flexible ECoG electrodes array to collect electrical signals of brain activities and to stimulate the lesions. Electronic circuits are designed for signal acquisition, processing and transmission using Bluetooth Low Energy 4 (LTE4) for wireless communication with cell phone. In-vivo experiments on a rat show that the flexible ECoG system can accurately record electrical signals of brain activities and transmit them to cell phone with a maximal sampling rate of 30 ksampling/s per channel. It demonstrates that the epilepsy lesions can be detected, located and treated through the ECoG system. The wireless ECoG system has low energy consumption and high brain spatial resolution, thus has great prospects for future application.
