Abstract:With the development of the wearable brain-computer interface (BCI), a few-channel BCI system is necessary for its application to daily life. In this paper, we proposed a bimodal BCI system that uses only a few channels of electroencephalograph (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) signals to obtain relatively high accuracy. We developed new approaches for signal acquisition and signal processing to improve the performance of this few-channel BCI system. At the signal acquisition stage, source analysis was applied for both EEG and fNIRS signals to select the optimal channels for bimodal signal collection. At the feature extraction stage, phase-space reconstruction was applied to the selected three-channel EEG signals to expand them into multichannel signals, thus allowing the use of the traditional effective common spatial pattern to extract EEG features. For the fNIRS signal, the Hurst exponents for the selected ten channels were calculated and composed of the fNIRS data feature. At the classification stage, EEG and fNIRS features were joined and classified with the support vector machine. The averaged classification accuracy of 12 participants was 81.2% for the bimodal EEG-fNIRS signals, which was significantly higher than that for either single modality.

Abstract:Background: Bran-computer interface (BCI) is an important technique used in brain science. However, the large size of equipment and wires severely limit its practical applications. New Methods: This study presents a wearable system with bidirectional brain-computer interface based on Wi-Fi technology, which can be used for olfactory electrophysiological recording and animal motion control. Results: On the "brain-to-computer" side, the results show that the wireless system can record high-quality olfactory electrophysiological signals for over a month. By analyzing the recorded data, we find that the same mitral/tufted (M/T) cells can be activated by many odorants and different M/T cells can be activated by a single odorant. Further, we find neurons in dorsal lateral OB are highly sensitive to isoamyl acetate. On the "computerto-brain" side, the results show that we can efficiently control rats' motions by applying electrical stimulations to electrodes implanted in specific brain regions. Comparison with existing methods: Most existing wireless BCI systems are designed for either recording or stimulating while our system is a bidirectional BCI featured with both functions. Taking advantage of our years of experience in olfactory decoding, we developed the first wireless system for olfactory electrophysiological recording and animal motion control. It provides high-quality recording and efficient motion control for a long time. Conclusions: The system provides possibility of practical SCI applications, such as in vivo bioelectronic nose and "rat-robot".

Abstract:Brain-computer interface(BCI)is a communication system that does not depend on the brain's normal output pathways of the peripheral nerves and muscles,and has developed rapidly in recent years.BCI provides a new communication channel for the patients with severe neuromuscular disorders,and also promises potential values in virtual reality,entertainment and airspace industries.Currently,BCI inputs use different electrophysiological signals,including P300,steady-state visual evoked potential(SSVEP),slow cortical potential(SCP)and/rhythms.Spontaneous EEG signals such as SCP and/rhythm are applied in BCI widely because they do not depend on additional inputs,or produce visual fatigue,or lead to adaptation,and their neurophysiological basis has been studied extensively.However,BCI based on spontaneous EEG has some obvious limitations.For example,some users do not know how to control/rhythm,and some others need to undergo a long period of training to use SCP-based BCI.

Abstract:While recent developments in electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have enabled a bridge between the brain and external devices with relatively high communication speed, there is still room for improvement. Notably, the phenomenon of "BCI illiteracy," which refers to the 15%-30% of people who struggle to type or control devices using BCI, remains unsolved, limiting the practical application of BCI systems. The EEG-based BCIs performance is constrained by the low-quality scalp EEG signals due to the attenuation and distortion of the skull. To address these limitations, this study proposes a hybrid BCI system combining EEG with magnetoencephalogram (MEG), a neuroimaging technology not influenced by the volume conduction effect, to boost BCI performance by enhancing signal quality. Comparative experiments involving 22 subjects showed that the steady-state visual evoked response (SSVER) from MEG has a wider range of effective bandwidth and higher signal-to-noise ratio than EEG. Moreover, differences in the spectral and spatiotemporal characteristics of MEG and EEG explain better performance. Simultaneous MEG-EEG recording experiments suggested that the hybrid MEG-EEG BCI achieved a significantly higher information transfer rate than either modality alone (hybrid: 312 +/- 17 bits/min, MEG: 272 +/- 17 bits/min, EEG: 240 +/- 27 bits/min). Moreover, the 40-target classification ac-curacy of "BCI illiterate" increased from 50% to 95% with the help of MEG. These results highlight the meth-odological advantages of a hybrid MEG-EEG BCI, suggesting a promising paradigm for implementing high-speed BCIs.
The Monocyte/Macrophage Infiltrate in 35 Medulloblastomas: A Paraffin-Wax Study

Abstract:We have studied formalin fixed, paraffin-wax embedded tissue from 35 medulloblastomas, collected over 23 years (27 non-desmoplastic and 8 desmoplastic) with KP1 and Mac387 two monoclonal anti-monocytes/macrophage (M/Ms) antibodies recommended for use on paraffin wax embedded tissue. In non-desmoplastic medulloblastomas, outside areas of necrosis, M/Ms were detected in 50% of cases with KP1 and 52% with Mac387. M/Ms were seen In 100% of desmoplastic medulloblastomas with both antibodies. Semiquantitative assessment revealed that, on average, desmoplastic tumors had at least three times as many Infiltrating M/Ms as non-desmoplastic tumors. There was no significant difference in the findings with the two antibodies or, between recently embedded and « older » tumors. The findings may be indicative of the presence of a host M/Ms immune response in medulloblastoma, which may be more accentuated in desmoplastic medulloblastomas. Furthermore, we conclude that these antibodies are quite suitable for the study of infiltrating M/Ms, thus lessening (but not obviating) the need for frozen tissue for immunohistological studies.
Real-time Decoding Algorithm in Brain Machine Interfaces

Abstract:The technology of invasive Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) has been developed in last decades, for its possibility to restore motor function of the disabilities. The main task of BCI system is to translate the cortical neural activities into commands of direct brain-controlled prosthetic devices. To study how cortical signals simultaneously recorded from primary motor cortex (M1) neurons were used for external devices control, invasive brain-machine interfaces in rat were investigated. In these experiments, rats were trained to control a relay to obtain water by pressing a lever over a pressure threshold. Microwire array was implanted in rat's motor cortex to record neural activities, and pressure was recorded by a pressure sensor. After spike detecting and sorting, totally 22-58 neurons were found in all 15 channels per rat (except the reference electrode in the array). To compute the firing rate of individual unit, the numbers of spikes in a time bin (Δt =100ms) were counted. Meanwhile, the pressure signal was also computed into bin size (Δt =100ms), by averaging pressure value in the bin period. After that some decoders were designed to make mapping between neural activities and pressure, such as Optimum Linear Estimation(OLE), Kalman filter (KF), and Kernel-Based Membership combined with Curve Fitting algorithm (KMCF). These decoders can be easily learned using a few minutes of training data and provides real-time estimates of hand position every 100ms given the firing rates of neurons in motor cortex. The performances of these decoders were evaluated by Correlation Coefficient (CC) between real and predictive pressure value. The results showed that the KMCF decoder performed best in these experiment, which had higher CC than others (CC=0.94). The higher CC indicated that the activity of motor cortex (M1) neurons can be used for detection of the corresponding movement states and estimation of continuous kinematic parameters. The rats could use - - their neural activities to directly control the relay and successfully get rewards after about one week of training. In further, with the development of the motor-related BCIs technology, BCIs will be possibly used to motor function restoration of paralytics and greatly rehabilitate their capacity of life. Furthermore, the experiment results provide insights into the nature of the neural coding of movement.

Abstract:BackgroundOne of the key challenges of the biomedical cyber-physical system is to combine cognitive neuroscience with the integration of physical systems to assist people with disabilities. Electroencephalography (EEG) has been explored as a non-invasive method of providing assistive technology by using brain electrical signals.MethodsThis paper presents a unique prototype of a hybrid brain computer interface (BCI) which senses a combination classification of mental task, steady state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) and eyes closed detection using only two EEG channels. In addition, a microcontroller based head-mounted battery-operated wireless EEG sensor combined with a separate embedded system is used to enhance portability, convenience and cost effectiveness. This experiment has been conducted with five healthy participants and five patients with tetraplegia.ResultsGenerally, the results show comparable classification accuracies between healthy subjects and tetraplegia patients. For the offline artificial neural network classification for the target group of patients with tetraplegia, the hybrid BCI system combines three mental tasks, three SSVEP frequencies and eyes closed, with average classification accuracy at 74% and average information transfer rate (ITR) of the system of 27 bits/min. For the real-time testing of the intentional signal on patients with tetraplegia, the average success rate of detection is 70% and the speed of detection varies from 2 to 4 s.

Abstract:Objective: Attention regulation is an essential ability in daily life that affects learning and work efficiency and is closely related to mental health. The effectiveness of brain-computer interface (BCI) systems in attention regulation has been proven, but most of these systems rely on bulky and expensive equipment and are still in the experimental stage. This study proposes a wearable BCI system for real-time attention regulation and cognitive monitoring. Methods: The BCI system integrates a wearable singlechannel electroencephalogram (EEG) headband with wireless data streaming for real-time analysis. Twenty healthy subjects participated in the long-term attention regulation experiment and were evenly divided into an experimental group and a control group based on the presence of realtime neurofeedback. The neurofeedback is represented by output value of attention, which calculated from singlechannel EEG data. Before and after the regulation sessions, baseline assessments were conducted for each subject, incorporating multi-channel EEG data analysis and cognitive behavioral evaluations, to verify the effectiveness of system for attention regulation. Results: The online experimental results indicate that the average attention level in the experimental group increased from 0.625 to 0.812, while no significant improvement was observed in the control group. Further comparative analysis revealed the reasons for the enhancement of attention regulation ability in terms of both brain network patterns and cognitive performance. Significance: The proposed wearable BCI system is effective at improving attention regulation ability and could be a promising tool for assisting people with attention disorders.

Abstract:Introduction: The collection and process of human brain activity signals play an essential role in developing brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. A portable electroencephalogram (EEG) device has become an important tool for monitoring brain activity and diagnosing mental diseases. However, the miniaturization, portability, and scalability of EEG recorder are the current bottleneck in the research and application of BCI. Methods: For scalp EEG and other applications, the current study designs a 32-channel EEG recorder with a sampling rate up to 30 kHz and 16-bit accuracy, which can meet both the demands of scalp and intracranial EEG signal recording. A fully integrated electrophysiology microchip RHS2116 controlled by FPGA is employed to build the EEG recorder, and the design meets the requirements of high sampling rate, high transmission rate and channel extensive. Results: The experimental results show that the developed EEG recorder provides a maximum 30 kHz sampling rate and 58 Mbps wireless transmission rate. The electrophysiological experiments were performed on scalp and intracranial EEG collection. An inflatable helmet with adjustable contact impedance was designed, and the pressurization can improve the SNR by approximately 4 times, the average accuracy of steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) was 93.12%. Animal experiments were also performed on rats, and spike activity was captured successfully. Conclusion: The designed multichannel wireless EEG collection system is simple and comfort, the helmet-EEG recorder can capture the bioelectric signals without noticeable interference, and it has high measurement performance and great potential for practical application in BCI systems.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:Since single brain computer interface (BCI) is limited in performance, it is necessary to develop collaborative BCI (cBCI) systems which integrate multi-user electroencephalogram (EEG) information to improve system performance. However, there are still some challenges in cBCI systems, including effective discriminant feature extraction of multi-user EEG data, fusion algorithms, time reduction of system calibration, etc. Methods: This study proposed an event-related potential (ERP) feature extraction and classification algorithm of spatio-temporal weighting and correlation analysis (STC) to improve the performance of cBCI systems. The proposed STC algorithm consisted of three modules. First, source extraction and interval modeling were used to overcome the problem of inter-trial variability. Second, spatio-temporal weighting and temporal projection were utilized to extract effective discriminant features for multi-user information fusion and cross-session transfer. Third, correlation analysis was conducted to match target/non-target templates for classification of multi-user and cross-session datasets.RESULTS:The collaborative cross-session datasets of rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) from 14 subjects were used to evaluate the performance of the EEG classification algorithm. For single-user/collaborative EEG classification of within-session and cross-session datasets, STC had significantly higher performance than the existing state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms.CONCLUSION:It was demonstrated that STC was effective to improve the classification performance of multi-user collaboration and cross-session transfer for RSVP-based BCI systems, and was helpful to reduce the system calibration time.

Abstract:The brain–computer interface (BCI) technology improves the communication efficiency between people and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. BCI based on the steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP-BCI) is the preferred scheme for controlling devices because of its convenient operation, low training requirement, and high information transmission rate (ITR). Most signal acquisition devices for BCIs are used for medical diagnosis and scientific research and utilize multiple channels and wet electrodes to obtain high-quality signals. However, the practicability, wearability, and cost of the signal acquisition devices for real-life applications need to be considered, resulting in new requirements for the acquisition mode, the number of electrodes, power consumption, and signal processing methods. This article presents a wearable low-power collaborative sensing system based on a time mask window canonical correlation analysis method (TMW-CCA). An 8-array spring dry electrode signal acquisition device based on a flexible circuit board is designed to address the shortcomings of traditional wet electrode acquisition devices, such as high-power consumption, discomfort, and being unsuitable for long-time use. The proposed TMW-CCA method, which uses a dry electrode sensor to evaluate the time domain's signal quality dynamically, exhibits 12.5% higher steady-state visual evoked potential recognition accuracy and 40% lower average power consumption (only 740 mW) than the benchmark.

Abstract:This paper proposed a compact wearable Electroencephalography (EEG) acquisition and analysis system targeting for event-related, wide-bandwidth biopotentials including Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR). The proposed system enables a 2-channel high EEG sampling mode with a sampling rate up to 16kHz, and an 8-channel low EEG sampling mode with a sampling rate of 4kHz. An audio codec is integrated generating synchronized audio stimulation and potential audio recording. A Bluetooth 5 based in-the-air protocol is designed featuring lossless neural data compression algorithm and lost-packet-retransmission strategy. Hydrogels are used as the tissue interface on the electrodes to improve the conductivity and stability. A precise time synchronization method with a standard deviation of $0.07\mu \text{s}$ is implemented for timestamping when external stimulus is requested. A Graphic User Interface (GUI) is developed for remote control of the proposed device as well as for real-time display of the acquired neural signal and analysis results. Both bench test and in-vivo click-ABRs test on human subject were performed on the proposed device. The experimental results proved the ability of the proposed EEG recorder to acquire high-time-resolution ABRs while giving periodic auditory stimulation.

Abstract:EEG-based Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) are facing basic challenges in real-world applications. The technical difficulties in developing truly wearable BCI systems that are capable of making reliable real-time prediction of users' cognitive states in dynamic real-life situations may seem almost insurmountable at times. Fortunately, recent advances in miniature sensors, wireless communication and distributed computing technologies offered promising ways to bridge these chasms. In this paper, we report an attempt to develop a pervasive on-line EEG-BCI system using state-of-art technologies including multi-tier Fog and Cloud Computing, semantic Linked Data search, and adaptive prediction/classification models. To verify our approach, we implement a pilot system by employing wireless dry-electrode EEG headsets and MEMS motion sensors as the front-end devices, Android mobile phones as the personal user interfaces, compact personal computers as the near-end Fog Servers and the computer clusters hosted by the Taiwan National Center for High-performance Computing (NCHC) as the far-end Cloud Servers. We succeeded in conducting synchronous multi-modal global data streaming in March and then running a multi-player on-line EEG-BCI game in September, 2013. We are currently working with the ARL Translational Neuroscience Branch to use our system in real-life personal stress monitoring and the UCSD Movement Disorder Center to conduct in-home Parkinson's disease patient monitoring experiments. We shall proceed to develop the necessary BCI ontology and introduce automatic semantic annotation and progressive model refinement capability to our system.

Abstract:Biosensor monitoring systems have been attracted great interest, stimulated by recent, significant advances in electronic, communications and information technologies. For instance, electroencephalography (EEG) is the most studied potential non-invasive interface in brain-computer interface (BCI), a hot topic aiming at creating a direct link between the brain and a computer. However, most BCI systems use bulky and wired EEG measurements, which is uncomfortable and inconvenient for users to perform daily-life tasks in. To address this concern, in this paper, we develop a wearable, wireless EEG acquisition and recording system, including a data acquisition unit and a data transmission and receiving unit. Our testing results show that the proposed design is effective with high common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR). The developed EEG system is suitable for biomedical applications such as patient monitoring and BCI.

Abstract:Most researchers acquired EEG by using standard measurement system like NeuroScan system, which includes AgCl electrode cap, SynAmps Amplifier and Scan software to provide good reliability for the acquisition of EEG data. However, it is still not convenient for Brain Computer Interface (BCI) application in daily life because of needing conduction gels to contact skins and being wired, expensive and heavy. Moreover, the conduction gel will trend to be drying, so it does not suitable for long-term monitoring. In this study, we developed a mobile and wireless EEG system. The system consists of frond-end 16-channel dry electrode cap, a miniature low-power wireless portable circuitry, and a back-end program receiving events and digital EEG data simultaneously. We demonstrate the recorded EEG data have high correlations between from our system and from NeuroScan system.

Abstract:This paper introduces a wirelessly powered scattered neural recording wearable system that can facilitate continuous, untethered, and long-term electroencephalogram (EEG) recording. The proposed system, including 32 standalone EEG recording devices and a central controller, is incorporated in a wearable form factor. The standalone devices are sparsely distributed on the scalp, allowing for flexible placement and varying quantities to provide extensive spatial coverage and scalability. Each standalone device featuring a low-power EEG recording application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) wirelessly receives power through a 60 MHz inductive link. The low-power ASIC design (84.6 μW) ensures sufficient wireless power reception through a small receiver (Rx) coil. The 60 MHz inductive link also serves as the data carrier for wireless communication between standalone devices and the central controller, eliminating the need for additional data antennas. All these efforts contribute to the miniaturization of standalone devices with dimensions of 12 × 12 × 5 mm3, enhancing device wearability. The central controller applies the pulse width modulation (PWM) scheme on the 60 MHz carrier, transmitting user commands at 4 Mbps to EEG recording ASICs. The ASIC employs a novel synchronized PWM demodulator to extract user commands, operating signal digitization and data transmission. The analog frontend (AFE) amplifies the EEG signal with a gain of 45 dB and applies band-pass filtering from 0.03 Hz to 400 Hz, with an input-referred noise (IRN) of 3.62 μVRMS. The amplified EEG signal is then digitized by a 10-bit successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with a peak signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SNDR) of 55.4 dB. The resulting EEG data is transmitted to an external software-defined radio (SDR) Rx through load-shift-keying (LSK) backscatter at 3.75 Mbps. Relationships Between Cognitive Deficits, Symptoms and Quality of Life in Schizophrenia

Abstract:Objective: Schizophrenia is a complex disorder characterized by impairment in a number of domains, all of which contribute to disability. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationships between cognitive function, symptoms and quality of life (QOL) in schizophrenia. Method: This cross-sectional study measured cognition, positive and negative symptom severity, and quality of life (measured with the Quality of Life Scale) in 57 outpatients with schizophrenia. Correlations between the different measures were sought. Multiple regression analyses were used to develop models of the contributions of cognitive deficits and symptomatology to QOL. Results: More severe positive and negative symptoms and cognitive impairment each correlated with poorer QOL. There was a moderate association between negative symptoms and cognition and a small association between positive symptoms and cognition. Age, gender, and drug and alcohol abuse did not significantly predict QOL. In the multiple regression analysis, entering the total cognition and total symptom scores produced a model that accounted for an additional 57% of the variance in QOL. Conclusions: Improving quality of life for people with schizophrenia requires that positive and negative symptoms and cognition are each addressed as separate domains of impairment. But, given that these account for only 57% of the variance in QOL, other factors such as unemployment, poverty, social isolation and stigma may also be important.

Abstract:Minimally invasive, high-bandwidth brain-computer-interface (BCI) devices can revolutionize human applications. With orders-of-magnitude improvements in volumetric efficiency over other BCI technologies, we developed a 50-μm-thick, mechanically flexible micro-electrocorticography (μECoG) BCI, integrating 256×256 electrodes, signal processing, data telemetry, and wireless powering on a single complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) substrate containing 65,536 recording and 16,384 stimulation channels, from which we can simultaneously record up to 1024 channels at a given time. Fully implanted below the dura, our chip is wirelessly powered, communicating bi-directionally with an external relay station outside the body. We demonstrated chronic, reliable recordings for up to two weeks in pigs and up to two months in behaving non-human primates from somatosensory, motor, and visual cortices, decoding brain signals at high spatiotemporal resolution.

A mobile EEG system for practical applications

Abstract:Translating brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) from research into real-life applications is a major challenge. A mobile electroencephalogram (EEG) system is a potential solution as it has practical advantages in flexibility, portability, and tolerance towards gross movements, however, it may compromise the EEG signal quality. In this paper, we present a new 64-channel mobile EEG system and evaluate the EEG signal quality by comparing it with a state-of-the-art wired laboratory EEG system. The comparisons were validated with alpha wave and a steady-state visually evoked potential (SSVEP)-based BCI paradigm in standing, walking and running conditions. The experimental results indicated that both EEG systems performed equally well when used in EEG recordings in the standing and walking conditions. Furthermore, the mobile EEG system achieved significantly higher classification accuracies for SSVEP detection than the referenced wired EEG system in the running condition. These findings suggest that the mobile EEG system holds promise in real-life BCI applications.

Abstract:Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) based on rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) have been widely used to categorize target and non-target images. However, it is still a challenge to detect single-trial event related potentials (ERPs) from electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Besides, the variability of EEG signal over time may cause difficulties of calibration in long-term system use. Recently, collaborative BCIs have been proposed to improve the overall BCI performance by fusing brain activities acquired from multiple subjects. For both individual and collaborative BCIs, feature extraction and classification algorithms that can be transferred across sessions can significantly facilitate system calibration. Although open datasets are highly efficient for developing algorithms, currently there is still a lack of datasets for a collaborative RSVP-based BCI. This paper presents a cross-session EEG dataset of a collaborative RSVP-based BCI system from 14 subjects, who were divided into seven groups. In collaborative BCI experiments, two subjects did the same target image detection tasks synchronously. All subjects participated in the same experiment twice with an average interval of ∼23 days. The results in data evaluation indicate that adequate signal processing algorithms can greatly enhance the cross-session BCI performance in both individual and collaborative conditions. Besides, compared with individual BCIs, the collaborative methods that fuse information from multiple subjects obtain significantly improved BCI performance. This dataset can be used for developing more efficient algorithms to enhance performance and practicality of a collaborative RSVP-based BCI system.
