Abstract:TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiO2-NTAs) were respectively fabricated using traditional one-step oxidation and re-oxidation method on a titanium surface in fluorine-containing electrolytes. Microstructures, optical properties of specimen were characterized by X-ray diffractometer, digital microscope, field-emission scanning electron microscope and ultraviolet-visible spectroscope. Compared with the one-step oxidation, the resulted samples showed more uniform surface, longer tube length and statistical higher absorption in visible light region. Importantly, a new growth mechanism named template-induced growth model is proposed to explain the growth of TiO2-NTAs prepared by re-oxidation approach in present work. Besides, water contact angles of samples before and after irradiated by UV light were measured and discussed in detail. It is confirmed that samples obtained from re-oxidation method have more hydroxyl groups can be formed when irradiated by UV light, which lead to more sensitive light-induced hydrophilicity finally. The light-induced hydrophilic performance of TiO2-NTAs would be favorable to improve the likelihood of electrolyte contacting of the surface, which is useful in many realistic application instances. Abstract:Different surface morphologies of TiO2 thin films were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis method on Ti substrates through changing reaction time. The microstructure, composition, optical properties and photocatalytic properties of TiO2 thin films were systematically investigated by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectrometer and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. As the reaction time increases, anatase structure and brookite structure of TiO2 films respectively increases and decreases, corresponding to surface morphology changes from irregular structure to regular geometrical shape structure. These structural changes are accompanied by significant variations of optical properties and photocatalytic properties including a widening of the band gap from 2.86 to 3.19 eV, photocatalytic degradation efficiency from 92.5 to 98.1% and photocatalytic degradation rate from 0.032 to 0.048 min(-1). Among all samples, TiO2-1 shows the best photocatalytic properties. Compositional analysis indicates that TiO2 surface layer contains Ti and O elements, the ratio of Ti:O is 1:2.28 which is close to the atom ratio of TiO2. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Background For dental implants, early infection and peri-implantitis after implant restoration are major reasons for implant failure. Plaque biofilm formation is the initiator for implant-related infection. Therefore, it is urgent to develop a new antibacterial implant materials or treatment methods. Aim/Hypothesis In this study, Sr- and Zn- incorporated micro nano-structured titanium surface with nanorods (MNT-Sr Zn) was fabricated by a two-step hydrothermal process, aiming to improve osseointegration and reduce implant failure caused by implant-related infection and broaden new ideas for the future research Material and Methods The Mod Ti surfaces were used as a control. The characterization of different surfaces was detected by a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectra (EDS) detector, x-ray diffractometer (XRD) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). Meanwhile, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) was selected to evaluate antibacterial properties through Live Dead Staining and watching the adhesive bacterial morphology under FE-SEM. What's more, rat bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs) were cultured on the surfaces to detect their early osteogenic properties, like the alkaline phosphatase(ALP) activity and the expressions of osteogenesis related genes. Results The results confirmed that nanorod-like particles with a diameter of about 30-50 nm of MNT-Sr Zn composed of well-crystallized ZnO and SrTiO3 phases. In the EDS spectra, the elements of Zn and Sr were evenly distributed, and approximately 1.49 ± 0.16 wt% and 21.69 ± 2.74 wt% respectively. Besides, the release of Sr2+ and Zn2+ was a controlled and long-term process. More importantly, Zn-containing nanorod-like particles and the morphology could work together, slightly decreasing adhesion of S. aureus but increasing the proportion of dead cells, thus inhibiting subsequent biofilm formation, compared with the controlled group. In addition to this, MNT-Sr Zn could enhance the osteogenic differentiation via the upregulation of the transcription of osteogenic related genes and the expression of ALP in vitro. Conclusion and Clinical Implications This research provides a new surface modification method on titanium substrate for multi-functional implant material development. Due to the co-doping of Sr and Zn in the coating, biomechanical stability, antibacterial capability and early osteogenic inductive effect are enhanced, which has the potential to be applied in dental implantation in the future.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic titanium (Ti) and its alloys have attracted considerable attention due to their application potentials; however, it is very difficult to obtain directly superhydrophobic surfaces on the Ti substrate by the anodization method. In the present work, TiO2 pinecone-like micro/nanostructures (TPSs) were fabricated on the Ti substrate by the anodization method. It was found that the sample surfaces without chemical modification were superhydrophilic and then became superhydrophobic after their exposure to air for a long time. After the high-temperature annealing treatment, the time required for the superhydrophilic to superhydrophobic wettability transition with the maximum water contact angle (WCA) of similar to 153 degrees and sliding angle (SA) of similar to 0 degrees was reduced from 81 days to 63 days. The surface chemistry and morphology analysis indicated that the wettability transition mainly occurred by the adsorption of organic compounds from ambient air and the trapped air in the microstructure. Furthermore, the superhydrophobic surfaces had excellent anti-icing and self-cleaning properties and long-term stability

Abstract:Precise control of the crystal phase of TiO2 by sputtering at room temperature is particularly important for practical applications. In this paper, nanocrystalline TiO2 films were deposited on glass and silicon substrates using DC reactive magnetron sputtering without external heating. The phase composition and preferred orientation of the TiO2 films could be controlled by adjusting the negative bias voltages. It was found that TiO2 films deposited at free negative bias voltage or ground exhibited an anatase single phase with a strong (101) preferred orientation, while the preferred orientation transformed into (211) when the negative bias voltage reached −50V. A further increase in the negative bias voltage induced the formation of an additional rutile phase, thus generating a mixed phase of anatase and rutile. A pure rutile phase was obtained at high negative bias voltage (≥−100V). The rutile phase with (101) preferred orientation could also be obtained by increasing the bias voltages above −125V. In addition, the TiO2 films of different phases performed different photocatalytic activities. The anatase TiO2 films showed higher photocatalytic activity than rutile phase films. Particularly, anatase TiO2 films with (211) preferred orientation showed a significant photocatalytic degradation of organic dye (Rhodamine B), the degradation of which reached over 90% after an irradiation time of 2h.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide is one of the best semiconductor photocatalysts available for photocatalysis. In this paper, titanium dioxide nanofiber membranes are prepared by post-anneal-assisted electrospinning process. The obtained membrane is composed of anatase titanium dioxide continuous and porous nanofibers with diameters ranging from 65 to 115 run. An optimized annealing scheme is determined. Photocatalytic measurements show that the photocatalytic efficiency of the anatase TiO2 nanofiber membrane is 72%, which is highly superior to that of the anatase TiO2 thin film (44%). It is believed that the large specific surface area intensively enhances the photocatalytic reactions and the good shape retention might be favorable for recuperability and practicality. Abstract:We used a hydrothermal technique to synthesize one-dimensional titanium oxide on titanium plate in a teflon reaction kettle. The hydrothermal treated plates were subsequently immersed in simulated body fluid for further biocompatibility studies. TEM, SEM, XRD and FTIR were used to investigate the structure and microcosmic morphology of the nanostructure before and after mineralization. The effect of the time on the crystal structures and microcosmic morphology of the samples were studied and the formation mechanism of the nanostructure were discussed. The results show that a neat, uniform size of nano film structure can be formed through hydrothermal reaction of titanium and NaOH aqueous solution. When titanium reacts with 6 mol/L NaOH solution at 180 degrees C, the nanostructures can be formed in only half 1 h, and reaction time has an effect on the size and structure of the nanofilm. After immersed in SBF for 7 d, it can induce apatite deposit to its surface.

Abstract:A simple and facile method is described to directly synthesize TiO2 nanostructures on titanium substrates by oxidizing Ti foil using small organic molecules as the oxygen source. The effect of reaction temperature and oxygen source on the formation of the TiO2 nanostructures has been studied using scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and water contact angle measurement. Polycrystalline grains are formed when pure oxygen and formic acid are used as the oxygen source; elongated micro-crystals are produced when water vapour is used as the oxygen source; oriented and aligned TiO2 nanorod arrays are synthesized when ethanol, acetaldehyde or acetone are used as the oxygen source. The growth mechanism of the TiO2 nanostructures is discussed. The diffusion of Ti atoms to the oxide/gas interface via the network of the grain boundaries of the thin oxide layer is the determining factor for the formation of well-aligned TiO2 nanorod arrays. The wetting properties of the TiO2 nanostructured surfaces formed are dictated by their structure, varying from a hydrophilic surface to a strongly hydrophobic surface as the surface structure changes from polycrystalline grains to well-aligned nanorod arrays. This tunable growth of TiO2 nanostructures is desirable for promising applications of TiO2 nanostructures in the development of optical devices, sensors, photo-catalysts and self-cleaning coatings.

Abstract:Biocompatible and freestanding TiO2 nanotube membranes with improved photocatalytic activity were fabricated through a water-vapour-assisted annealing treatment at relatively low temperatures. Photoluminescence results and structure characterization prove that the obtained TiO2 nanotube membranes not only possess an enhanced anatase crystallinity from water molecule-intermediated dissolution-precipitation reactions, but are also covered with abundant hydroxyl groups which are hardly influenced by external disturbances. The anatase crystallinity, the superficial hydroxyl groups and the nanotubular morphology of the membrane treated with water vapour thus lead to enhancement in photocatalytic activity. This new approach is simple and time-saving, opening up new opportunities in various areas, including tissue-engineering, watersplitting, dye-sensitized solar cells and photocatalysis.
Formation and crystallization of TiO2 nanostructures on various surfaces

Abstract:A comparative study of the synthesis of TiO2 nanorods on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass, Si, SiO2, Si/Ta, Si/TiN, Si/TiN/Ti and Si/HFO2 substrates by hydrothermal reaction is presented. Detailed analysis on the growth of TiO2 on pre-annealed Si/TiN/Ti and HfO2 (HFO) surfaces is also given. For Si/TiN/Ti, a pre-annealing procedure led to the transformation of Ti to a TiO2 layer which acts as a seed for aligned growth of TiO2 nanorods. In contrast, Si/HFO does not provide a nucleation site for the formation of aligned nanorods. Various samples were prepared by varying the synthesis conditions, i.e. pre- and post-annealing temperatures and hydrothermal reaction time to figure out the optimum conditions which lead to unidirectional and highly aligned nanorods. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy were used to study structural, morphological and optical properties of synthesized samples. It is found that TiO2 nanorods exhibit a rutile phase on the Si/Ti/TiN and Si/HFO substrates, but highly oriented vertical growth of nanorods has been observed only on pre-annealed Si/TiN/Ti substrates. On the other hand, TiO2 nanorods form dandelion-like structures on Si/HFO substrates. Growth of vertically oriented TiO2 nanorods on Si/TiN/Ti is attributed to the TiO2 seed layer which forms after the process of pre-annealing of substrates at a suitable temperature. Variation in hydrothermal reaction time and post-annealing temperature brings further improvement in crystallinity and morphology of nanorods. This work shows that the pre-annealed Si/TiN/Ti substrate is the optimal choice to achieve vertically oriented, highly aligned TiO2 nanorods.

Abstract:We report a facile solution method to form titanium oxide (TiO 2 ) nano-flower structure on the titanium (Ti) substrates for realizing good physical sterilization and biocompatibility. We first prepare TiO 2 nanotubes (NT) with a diameter of about 80–100 nm and a length of about 5 μm on Ti substrates by anodization, which is utilized as precursor. Then, we employ immersion treatment in different concentrations of phosphoric acid solution at 75 °C for 5 h to realize the transformation from TiO 2 NT to TiO 2 nano-flower structure. In addition, we studied the effects of phosphoric acid concentration (1 wt%, 2.5 wt%, 5 wt% and 10 wt%) on the TiO 2 nano-flower structure, and the antibacterial properties and biocompatibility of the TiO 2 nano-flower structure. The results show that TiO 2 nano-flower structure become larger and thicker with the increase in the phosphoric acid concentration, and the thickness of the coating can reach 6.88 μm. Meanwhile, the TiO 2 nano-flower structure shows good physical sterilization effect, especially for the TiO 2 nano-flower structure formed in 10 wt% H 3 PO 4 solution, the antibacterial rate can reach 95%. In addition, the TiO 2 nano-flower structure have no toxicity to the osteoblasts and support cell growth.

Abstract:Rutile TiO2 nanorod films have been successfully prepared on titanium substrate via a hydrothermal method using Tetra-n-butyl titanate as Ti source in the presence of concentrated hydrochloric acid. The effect of Ti substrate annealing treatment and adding of additional alkali metal chlorides in hydrothermal solution on the growth of TiO2 nanorod films has been studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and water contact angle measurement. The growth mechanism of the TiO2 nanorods on Ti substrate has also been discussed. It has shown that the initial rutile film transformed from anatase promotes the nucleation and epitaxial growth of rutile TiO2 nanorods. The superior wettabilities of the TiO2 nanorods resulted from treatments of vacuum and ultraviolet show great potential for applications in orthopaedic, dental implants, and possible photocatalysis.
Tio2 Nanostructured Materials: Design, Characterization And Applications

Abstract:Nanostructured materials have attracted tremendous attention in both fundamental studies and applications due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Of the various types of nanostructured materials, TiO2 nanomaterials are extensively studied for their broad range of applications. A number of methods have been developed for preparing TiO2 nanoparticles, nanorods, whiskers, nanowires, nanotubes and mesoporous TiO2 films. In this chapter, we describe two novel methods recently developed in our laboratory to grow TiO2 nanostructured materials directly on titanium (Ti) substrate. Dense and well-aligned TiO2 nanorod arrays form on a Ti substrate when using organic molecules, such as ethanol, acetaldehyde, acetone and dibutyltin dilaurate, as the oxygen source in the oxidation of Ti at high temperatures. In contrast, polycrystalline grains are formed when pure oxygen and formic acid are used as the oxygen source; elongated micro-crystals are produced when water vapor is used as the oxygen source; whereas the use of argon with a low concentration of oxygen produces random nanofibers growing from the ledges of the TiO2 grains. Measurements of the water contact angle of these samples show that the wetting properties of the TiO2 films are dictated by their structure, varying from a hydrophilic surface (polycrystalline grains) to hydrophobic (random nanofibers), and towards a highly-hydrophobic surface (well-aligned nanorod arrays). Secondly, we have synthesized large-scale Na2Ti6O13 nanoplates, nanowires, and continuous nanowire network films directly on Ti substrate hydrothermally. The morphology of the formed Na2Ti6O13 nanostructures is easily tuned by varying the experimental parameters of temperature, reaction duration and NaOH concentrations. Our study shows that the synthesized Na2Ti6O13 nanostructures are easily converted into H2Ti3O7 nanostructures, a desirable precursor for the fabrication of various TiO2-based nanomaterials such as anatase, a mixture of anatase and rutile, and rutile TiO2 nanomaterials, with shape-preservation through an ion-exchange process. The approaches described in this chapter provide simple and novel methods to synthesize various large-scale TiO2-based nanostructured materials. This tunable growth of TiO2 nanostructures is desirable for the promising applications of TiO2 nanomaterials in the development of photo-catalysts, optical devices, sensors and self-cleaning coatings.

Abstract:The double-layer TiO2 nanosheet films have been deposited on Si substrate by a liquid-phase deposition method using ZnO nanosheets as the template. The initial morphology of the ZnO nanosheet templates is maintained after the TiO2 deposition. The TiO2 nanosheets are uniformly distributed widely and grown perpendicularly to the substrate. The TiO2 nanosheets are of anatase phase with the outside thickness of ~220–380nm. The growth mechanism for the formation of TiO2 nanosheet films is investigated. Experimentally, it shows that the TiO2 nanosheet films have highly photocatalytic activities for the decomposition of azo dye C. I. reactive yellow 15.

Abstract:Na2Ti6O13 nanoplates, nanowires, and continuous nanowire network films are hydrothermally formed on a large scale directly on Ti substrates for the first time. The morphology of the formed Na2Ti6O13 nanostructures can be easily tuned by varying the experimental parameters of temperature, reaction duration, and the NaOH concentration. Our study demonstrates that the synthesized Na2Ti6O13 nanostructures are easily converted into H2Ti3O7 nanostructures - a desirable precursor for the fabrication of various TiO2-based nanomaterials - with shape preservation, by an ion-exchange process. Anatase, a mixture of anatase and rutile, and rutile TiO2 nanowires are formed when the H2Ti3O7 nanowires are annealed at 450,600 and 750 degrees C, respectively. The optical properties and the photocatalytic activity of H2Ti3O7 nanowires and of the TiO2-based nanomaterials are also addressed. The approach described in this study provides a simple and novel method for the large-scale synthesis of various TiO2-based nanostructured materials that grow directly on Ti substrates and are ready for a wide range of practical applications, such as the photodegradation of wastewater.
A Study on the Characteristic and Antibacterial Activity of Ti3Ox Thin Films

Abstract:A pure Ti target in Ar/O2 gas mixture was used to synthesize Ti3Ox thin film on a glass substrate by Reactive High-Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HiPIMS) under different sputtering power (2 and 2.5 kW). The influence of HiPIMS parameters on thin films’ structural, morphological, chemical composition, optical and photocatalytic, and antibacterial properties was investigated. In this study, Ti3Ox thin films can be synthesized using the HiPIMS method without the post-annealing process. Two co-existence phases (hexagonal Ti3O and base-centered monoclinic Ti3O5 phases) existed on the Ti3Ox films. It is found that the peak intensity of (006) Ti3O hexagonal slightly increased as the sputtering power increased from 2 to 2.5 kW. The Ti3Ox thin-film bandgap values were 3.36 and 3.50 eV for 2 and 2.5 kW, respectively. The Ti3Ox films deposited at 2.5 kW showed good photocatalytic activity under UV light irradiation, with a higher methylene blue dye degradation rate than TiO2 thin films. The antibacterial study on Ti3Ox thin films exhibited a high inhibition percentage against E. coli and S. aureus. This study demonstrates that Ti3Ox thin films can promote high photocatalytic and antibacterial activity.
