Abstract:We present results of an investigation into the nature of instantons in 4-dimensional pure gauge lattice $SU(2)$\ obtained from configurations which have been cooled using an under-relaxed cooling algorithm. We discuss ways of calibrating the cooling and the effects of different degrees of cooling, and compare our data for the shapes, sizes and locations of instantons with continuum results. In this paper we extend the ideas and techniques developed by us for use in $O(3)$, and compare the results with those obtained by other groups.

Abstract:We investigate the thermodynamic properties of a half-filled SU(2N) Hubbard model in the two-dimensional square lattice by the method of the determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulation, which is free of the fermion "sign problem." The large number of hyperfine-spin components enhances spin fluctuations, which facilitates the Pomeranchuk cooling to temperatures comparable to the superexchange energy scale in the case of SU(6). Various physical quantities including entropy, charge fluctuations, and spin correlations are calculated.

Abstract:We describe a new cooling algorithm for SU(2) lattice gauge theory. It has any critical point of the energy or action functional as a fixed point. In particular, any number of unstable modes may occur. We also provide insight in the convergence of the cooling algorithms. A number of solutions will be discussed, in particular the sphalerons for twisted and periodic boundary conditions which are important for the low-energy dynamics of gauge theories. For a unit cubic volume we find a sphaleron energy of resp. $\cE_s=34.148(2)$ and $\cE_s=72.605(2)$ for the twisted and periodic case. Remarkably, the magnetic field for the periodic sphaleron satisfies at all points $\Tr B_x^2=\Tr B_y^2=\Tr B_z^2$.

Refined instanton analysis of the 2D $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ model: mass gap, theta dependence, and mirror symmetry

Abstract:We address nonperturbative dynamics of the two-dimensional bosonic and supersymmetric $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ models for general $N$ by developing new tools directly on $\mathbb{R}^2$. The analysis starts with a new formulation of instantons that is consistent with the existence of the classical moduli space, classical dipole--dipole type interactions of instanton--anti-instanton pairs, and vanishing interaction of instanton--instanton pairs. The classical consistency is achieved via a representation of the instanton as a collection of $N$ pointlike constituents carrying pair of real and imaginary charges valued in the weight lattice of $SU(N)$. The constituents interact via a generalized Coulomb interaction and do not violate the fact that instanton is a single lump with integer topological charge. By developing the appropriate Gibbs distribution, we show that the vacuum can be captured by a statistical field theory of these constituents, and their cluster expansion. Contrary to the common belief that instantons do not capture the vacuum structure and non-perturbation properties of such theories, our refined analysis is able to produce properties such as mass gap, theta dependence, and confinement of the theory on $\mathbb{R}^2$. In supersymmetric theory, our construction gives a new derivation of the mirror symmetry between the sigma model and the dual Landau--Ginzburg model by Hori and Vafa. Our construction also demonstrates that there is absolutely no conflict between large $N$ and instantons.

Numerical fractional instantons in SU(2): center vortices, monopoles, and a sharp transition between them

Abstract:We use a numerical cooling algorithm to study fractional instantons in $SU(2)$ pure Yang-Mills on $\mathbb{R}^2\times\mathbb{T}^2_*$, $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$, and $\mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{T}^2_* \times S^1$. We confirm that the fractional instantons are center vortices on $\mathbb{R}^2\times\mathbb{T}^2_*$ and monopoles on $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$, and we calculate several properties relevant to using these solutions for semiclassical calculations. On $\mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{T}^2_* \times S^1$, we interpolate between the large $\mathbb{T}^2_*$ limit and the large $S^1$ limit to study how the solutions interpolate between center vortices and monopoles. We find that they are separated by a sharp transition, with 't Hooft's constant field strength solutions living at the transition point. These results contrast but do not contradict recent results suggesting continuity between vortices and monopoles.

Abstract:We have been able to observe directly extended instantons on the lattice, with a new method that does not require dislocations to measure them, and where we do not perform cooling. We showed, based on the simple Abelian Higgs model in $1+1$ dim., that one can extract the instanton and anti-instanton density and their size, by measuring the topological charge, $Q_v$ , on sub-volumes $v$ larger than the instanton sizes, but smaller than the periodic lattice of size $V$. We are working on the generalization for non-abelian models.

Abstract:Instanton processes are present in a variety of quantum field theories relevant to high energy as well as condensed matter physics. While they have led to important theoretical insights and physical applications, their underlying features often remain elusive due to the complicated computational treatment. Here, we address this problem by studying topological as well as non-topological instantons using Monte Carlo methods on lattices of interacting spins. As a proof of principle, we systematically construct instanton solutions in $O(3)$ non-linear sigma models with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in $(1 + 1)$ and $(1 + 2)$ dimensions, thereby resembling an example of a chiral magnet. We demonstrate that, due to their close correspondence, Monte Carlo techniques in spin-lattice systems are well suited to describe topologically non-trivial field configurations in these theories. In particular, by means of simulated annealing, we demonstrate how to obtain domain walls, merons and critical instanton solutions.
Superdiffusion-like behavior in zero-temperature coarsening of the $d=3$ Ising model

Abstract:One key aspect of coarsening following a quench below the critical temperature is domain growth. For the non-conserved Ising model a power-law growth of domains of like spins with exponent $\alpha = 1/2$ is predicted. Including recent work, it was not possible to clearly observe this growth law in the special case of a zero-temperature quench in the three-dimensional model. Instead a slower growth with $\alpha<1/2$ was reported. We attempt to clarify this discrepancy by running large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of lattice sizes up to $L=2048$ employing an efficient GPU implementation. Indeed, at late times we measure domain sizes compatible with the expected growth law -- but surprisingly, at still later times domains even grow superdiffusively, i.e., with $\alpha > 1/2$. We argue that this new problem is possibly caused by sponge-like structures emerging at early times.

Infrared fixed point of the SU(3) gauge theory with $N_f = 10$ flavors

Abstract:We use lattice simulations and the continuous renormalization-group method, based on the gradient flow, to calculate the $\beta$ function and anomalous dimensions of the SU(3) gauge theory with $N_f=10$ flavors of fermions in the fundamental representation. We employ several improvements to extend the range of available renormalized couplings, including the addition of heavy Pauli-Villars bosons to reduce cutoff effects and the combination of a range of gradient flow transformations. While in the weak coupling regime our result is consistent with those of earlier studies, our techniques allow us to study the system at much stronger couplings than previously possible. We find that the renormalization group $\beta$ function develops a zero, corresponding to an infrared-stable fixed point, at gradient-flow coupling $g^2=15.0(5)$. We also determine the mass and tensor anomalous dimensions: At the fixed point we find $\gamma_m\simeq0.6$, suggesting that this system might be deep inside the conformal window.

Abstract:We focus on three-component SU(3) Fermi gases loaded into a square optical lattice, with population imbalance between one component and the others. At strong coupling the system is described by the SU(3) Heisenberg model with an external field that couples to the population imbalance. We discuss the ground state at the mean-field level and then analyze the thermal fluctuations with the semi-classical Monte Carlo method. The interplay of interactions, population imbalance and thermal fluctuations gives rise to a phase transition linked to the breaking of an emergent Ising symmetry, despite the absence of frustration. This represents a new scenario of discrete symmetry breaking in low-dimensional systems with continuous symmetries. Possible implementations with cold alkaline-earth(-like) atoms are discussed.

Abstract:The SU(2) glueball masses and the gluonic correlation functions in the J(P) = 0(+), 2(+) and 0(-) channels are calculated from the cooled and uncooled gauge configurations. The improved action and the anisotropic lattice are used in this work. The instanton-induced attractive force in the 0(+) channel and the repulsive force in the 0(-) channel are confirmed by the Monte Carlo simulation. There is evidence that the instanton vacuum contribution to the 0(+) glueball mass is significant.
Calculation of SU($2$) string tension in the continuum limit by an effective theory of center vortices

Abstract:Using an effective theory for an ensemble of center vortices, we observe the area law fall-off in the continuum limit for the SU($2$) gauge group in three-dimensional Euclidean space-time. The string tension is obtained in terms of the intrinsic properties of the vortices and the parameter describing their interactions. A good qualitative agreement between our results and the lattice ones is observed. In addition, we show that the repulsive force between the vortices increases with temperature. This behavior is expected due to the reduction of vortex configuration at higher temperatures, required for the deconfinement regime.

Abstract:We study (anti-) instantons in super Yang-Mills theories defined on a non anticommutative superspace. The instanton solution that we consider is the same as in ordinary SU(2) N=1 super Yang-Mills, but the anti-instanton receives corrections to the U(1) part of the connection which depend quadratically on fermionic coordinates, and linearly on the deformation parameter C. By substituting the exact solution into the classical Lagrangian the topological charge density receives a new contribution which is quadratic in C and quartic in the fermionic zero-modes. The topological charge turns out to be zero. We perform an expansion around the exact classical solution in presence of a fermionic background and calculate the full superdeterminant contributing to the one-loop partition function. We find that the one-loop partition function is not modified with respect to the usual N=1 super Yang-Mills.

Abstract:We perform a nonperturbative calculation of the shear viscosity for ( 2+1 )-dimensional SU(2) gauge theory by using the lattice Hamiltonian formulation. The retarded Green's function of the stress-energy tensor is calculated from real time evolution via exact diagonalization of the lattice Hamiltonian with a local Hilbert space truncation, and the shear viscosity is obtained via the Kubo formula. When taking the continuum limit, we account for the renormalization group flow of the coupling but no additional operator renormalization. We find the ratio of the shear viscosity and the entropy density ηs is consistent with a well-known holographic result 14π at several temperatures on a 4×4 honeycomb lattice with the local electric representation truncated at jmax=12 . We also find the ratio of the spectral function and frequency ρxy(ω)ω exhibits a peak structure when the frequency is small. Both the exact diagonalization method and simple matrix product state classical simulation method beyond jmax=12 on bigger lattices require exponentially growing resources. So we develop a quantum computing method to calculate the retarded Green's function and analyze various systematics of the calculation including jmax truncation and finite size effects, Trotter errors and the thermal state preparation efficiency. Our thermal state preparation method still requires resources that grow exponentially with the lattice size, but with a very small prefactor at high temperature. Abstract:We examine several recent lattice-simulation data sets, asking whether they are consistent with infrared conformality. We observe, in particular, that for an SU(3) gauge theory with 12 Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation, recent simulation data can be described assuming infrared conformality. Lattice simulations include a fermion mass m which is then extrapolated to zero, and we note that this data can be fit by a small-m expansion, allowing a controlled extrapolation. We also note that the conformal hypothesis does not work well for two theories that are known or expected to be confining and chirally broken, and that it does work well for another theory expected to be infrared conformal.

Abstract:We present the first direct ab initio computation of unequal-time correlation functions in non-Abelian lattice gauge theory. We demonstrate nontrivial consistency relations among correlators, time-translation invariance, and agreement with Monte Carlo results for thermal equilibrium in 3+1 dimensions by employing our stabilized complex Langevin method.
