Abstract:We simulate N f = 2 + 1 QCD at the physical point combining open and periodic boundary conditions in a parallel tempering framework, following the original proposal by M. Hasenbusch for 2 d CP N −1 models, which has been recently implemented and widely employed in 4 d SU( N ) pure Yang-Mills theories too. We show that using this algorithm it is possible to achieve a sizable reduction of the auto-correlation time of the topological charge in dynamical fermions simulations both at zero and finite temperature, allowing to avoid topology freezing down to lattice spacings as fine as a ∼ 002 fm. Therefore, this implementation of the Parallel Tempering on Boundary Conditions algorithm has the potential to substantially push forward the investigation of the QCD vacuum properties by means of lattice simulations.

Inherently Global Nature of Topological Charge Fluctuations in QCD

Abstract:We have recently presented evidence that in configurations dominating the regularized pure-glue QCD path integral, the topological charge density constructed from the overlap Dirac operator organizes into an ordered space–time structure. It was pointed out that, among other properties, this structure exhibits two important features: it is low-dimensional and geometrically global, i.e., consisting of connected sign-coherent regions with local dimensions 1⩽d<4, and spreading over arbitrarily large space–time distances. Here we show that the space–time structure responsible for the origin of topological susceptibility indeed exhibits global behavior. In particular, we show numerically that topological fluctuations are not saturated by localized concentrations of most intense topological charge density. To the contrary, the susceptibility saturates only after the space–time regions with most intense fields are included, such that geometrically global structure is already formed. We demonstrate this result both at the fundamental level (full topological density) and at low energy (effective density). The drastic mismatch between the point of fluctuation saturation (≈50% of space–time at low energy) and that of global structure formation (<4% of space–time at low energy) indicates that the ordered space–time structure in topological charge is inherently global and that topological charge fluctuations in QCD cannot be understood in terms of individual localized pieces. Description in terms of global brane-like objects should be sought instead.
Localization of Topological Charge Density Near Tc in Quenched QCD with Wilson Flow

Abstract:We smear quenched lattice QCD ensembles with lattice volume $32^3\times 8$ by using Wilson flow. Six ensembles at temperature near the critical temperature $T_c$ corresponding to the critical inverse coupling $\beta_c=6.06173(49)$ are used to investigate the localization of topological charge density. If the effective smearing radius of Wilson flow is large enough, the density, size and peak of Harrington-Shepard (HS) caloron-like topological lumps of ensembles are stable when $\beta\leq 6.050$, but start to change significantly when $\beta\geq6.055$. The inverse participation ratio (IPR) of topological charge density shows similar results, it begins to increase when $\beta\geq 6.055$ and is stable when $\beta\leq 6.050$. The pseudoscalar glueball mass is extracted from the topological charge density correlator (TCDC) of ensembles at $T=1.19T_c,~\textrm{and }1.36T_c$, the masses are $1.915(98)\textrm{ GeV}$ and $1.829(123)\textrm{ GeV}$ respectively, they are consistent with results from conventional methods.

We investigate the severeness of the problem in the range of lattice spacings used in contemporary simulations and propose a method to give more reliable error estimates.

Abstract:The equivalence of cooling to the gradient flow when the cooling step $n_c$ and the continuous flow step of gradient flow $\tau$ are matched is generalized to gauge actions that include rectangular terms. By expanding the link variables up to subleading terms in perturbation theory, we relate $n_c$ and $\tau$ and show that the results for the topological charge become equivalent when rescaling $\tau \simeq n_c/({3-15 c_1})$ where $c_1$ is the Symanzik coefficient multiplying the rectangular term. We, subsequently, apply cooling and the gradient flow using the Wilson, the Symanzik tree-level improved and the Iwasaki gauge actions to configurations produced with $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass fermions. We compute the topological charge, its distribution and the correlators between cooling and gradient flow at three values of the lattice spacing demonstrating that the perturbative rescaling $\tau \simeq n_c/({3-15 c_1})$ leads to equivalent results.

Local Structure of Topological Charge Fluctuations in QCD

Abstract:We consider the lattice topological charge density introduced by Hasenfratz, Laliena, and Niedermayer and propose its eigenmode expansion as a tool to investigate the structure of topological charge fluctuations in QCD. The resulting effective density is built from local chiralities studied previously. At every order of the expansion, the density exactly sums up to the global topological charge, and the leading term describes the maximally smooth space-time distribution of charge relevant for propagating light fermions. We use this framework to demonstrate our previous suggestion that the bulk of the topological charge in QCD does not effectively appear in the form of quantized unit lumps. Our conclusion implies that it is unlikely that the mixing of ``would-be'' zero modes associated with such lumps is the prevalent microscopic mechanism for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. We also present the first results quantitatively characterizing the space-time behavior of effective densities. For coherent fluctuations contained in spherical regions, we find a continuous distribution of associated charges essentially ending at $\ensuremath{\approx}0.5.$
Out-of-equilibrium simulations to fight topological freezing

Abstract:Calculations of topological observables in lattice gauge theories with traditional Monte Carlo algorithms have long been known to be a difficult task, owing to the effects of long autocorrelations times. Several mitigation strategies have been put forward, including the use of open boundary conditions and methods such as parallel tempering. In this contribution we examine a new approach based on out-of-equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations. Starting from thermalized configurations with open boundary conditions on a line defect, periodic boundary conditions are gradually switched on. A sampling of topological observables is then shown to be possible with a specific reweighting-like technique inspired by Jarzynski's equality. We discuss the efficiency of this approach using results obtained for the 2-dimensional $\mathrm{CP}^{N-1}$ models. Furthermore, we outline the implementation of our proposal in the context of Stochastic Normalizing Flows, as they share the same theoretical framework of the non-equilibrium transformations we perform, and can be thought of as their generalization.

Abstract:We present an update on the study of topological structure of QCD. Issues addressed include a comparison between the plaquette and the geometric methods of calculating the topological density. We show that the improved gauge action based on 3 blocking transformation suppresses the formation of topologically charged dislocations with low action. Using a cooling method we identify the instantons' location, estimate their size and density, and calculate the renormalization constant ZQ for the plaquette method.

Abstract:The introduction of non-orthogonal electric and magnetic fields in the QCD vacuum enhances the weight of topological sectors with a nonzero topological charge. For weak fields, there is a linear response for the expectation value of the topological charge. We study this linear response and relate it to the QCD correction to the axion-photon coupling. We also analyse the magnetic field dependence of the topological susceptibility for a range of temperatures around $T_c$. In this work we use lattice simulations with improved staggered quarks at physical masses, including background magnetic and (imaginary) electric fields.

Abstract:We investigate the role of topology in the space-time scaling limit of quantum quench dynamics, where both time and system size tend to infinity at a constant ratio. There, while the standard topological characterization relying on local unitary transformations becomes ill defined, we show how a different dynamical notion of topology naturally arises through a dynamical winding number encoding the linear response of the Berry phase to a magnetic flux. Specifically, we find that the presence of a locally invisible constant magnetic flux is revealed by a dynamical staircase behavior of the Berry phase, whose topologically quantized plateaus characterize the space-time scaling limit of a quenched Rice-Mele model. These jumps in the Berry phase are also shown to be related to the interband elements of the DC current operator. We outline possible experimental platforms for observing the predicted phenomena in finite systems.

Fate of the topological susceptibility in two-color dense QCD

Abstract:We explore the topological susceptibility at finite quark chemical potential and zero temperature in two-color QCD (QC$_2$D) with two flavors. Through the Ward-Takahashi identities of QC$_2$D, we find that the topological susceptibility in the vacuum solely depends on three observables: the pion decay constant, the pion mass, and the $\eta$ mass in the low-energy regime of QC$_2$D. Based on the identities, we numerically evaluate the topological susceptibility at finite quark chemical potential using the linear sigma model with the approximate Pauli-Gursey $SU(4)$ symmetry. Our findings indicate that, in the absence of $U(1)_A$ anomaly effects represented by the Kobayashi-Maskawa-'t Hooft-type determinant interaction, the topological susceptibility vanishes in both the hadronic and baryon superfluid phases. On the other hand, when the $U(1)_A$ anomaly effects are present, the constant and nonzero topological susceptibility is induced in the hadronic phase, reflecting the mass difference between the pion and $\eta$ meson. Meanwhile, in the superfluid phase it begins to decrease smoothly. The asymptotic behavior of the decrement is fitted by the continuous reduction of the chiral condensate in dense QC$_2$D, which is similar to the behavior observed in hot three-color QCD matter. In addition, effects from the finite diquark source on the topological susceptibility are discussed. We expect that the present study provides a clue to shed light on the role of the $U(1)_A$ anomaly in cold and dense QCD matter.

Abstract:We introduce the Dirac eigenmode filtering of topological charge density associated with Ginsparg-Wilson fermions as a tool to investigate the local structure of topological charge fluctuations in QCD. The resulting framework is used to demonstrate that the bulk of topological charge in QCD does not appear in the form of unit quantized lumps. This means that the mixing of “would-be” zeromodes associated with such lumps is probably not the prevalent microscopic mechanism for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. To characterize the coherent local behavior in topological charge density at low energy, we compute the charges contained in maximal coherent spheres enclosing non-overlapping peaks. We find a continuous distribution essentially ending at ≈ 0.5. Finally, we study, for the first time, the overlap-operator topological-charge-density correlators and find consistency with non-positivity at nonzero physical distance. This represents a non-trivial check on the locality (in gauge paths) of the overlap Dirac operator for realistic gauge backgrounds.
Topological critical slowing down: Variations on a toy model

Abstract:Numerical simulations of lattice quantum field theories whose continuum counterparts possess classical solutions with nontrivial topology face a severe critical slowing down as the continuum limit is approached. Standard Monte Carlo algorithms develop a loss of ergodicity, with the system remaining frozen in configurations with fixed topology. We analyze the problem in a simple toy model, consisting of the path integral formulation of a quantum mechanical particle constrained to move on a circumference. More specifically, we implement for this toy model various techniques which have been proposed to solve or alleviate the problem for more complex systems, like non-Abelian gauge theories, and compare them both in the regime of low temperature and in that of very high temperature. Among the various techniques, we propose an alternative algorithm which completely solves the freezing problem, but unfortunately is specifically tailored for this particular model and not easily exportable to more complex systems.

Abstract:The topological charge is studied on lattices of large physical volume andfine lattice spacing. We illustrate how a parity transformation on the SU(3)link-variables of lattice gauge configurations reverses the sign of thetopological charge and leaves the action invariant. Random applications of theparity transformation are proposed to traverse from one topological charge signto the other. The transformation provides an improved unbiased estimator of theensemble average and is essential in improving the ergodicity of the Markovchain process.
QCD topology and axion properties in an isotropic hot and dense medium

Abstract:We study the QCD topology and axion properties at finite temperature and chemical potential in the framework of the two-flavor Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model. We find that the behaviors of the two lowest cumulants of the QCD topological charge distribution and axion properties are highly sensitive to the critical behavior of the chiral phase transition. In particular, the topological susceptibility and the axion mass follow the response of the chiral condensate to temperature and chemical potential, showing that both quantities decrease monotonically with the increment of temperature and/or chemical potential. However, it is important to note that the normalized fourth cumulant behaves differently depending on the temperature. At low temperatures, it is a non-monotonic function of the chemical potential, while at high temperatures, it monotonically decreases. Additionally, its value invariably approaches the asymptotic value of $b_2^{\text {inst }}=-1/12$, predicted by the dilute instanton gas model. We also observe that with the increase in chemical potential at relatively low temperatures, the axion self-coupling constant exhibits a sharp peak around the critical point, which can even be more than twice its vacuum value. After that, the self-coupling drops sharply to a much lower value than its vacuum value, eventually approaching zero in the high chemical potential limit. The finding that the axion self-coupling constant is significantly enhanced in high-density environments near the chiral phase transition could lead to the creation or enhancement of an axion Bose-Einstein condensate in compact astrophysical objects.

Non-equilibrium dynamics of topological defects in the 3d O(2) model

Abstract:We present a study of the 3d O(2) non-linear $\sigma$-model on the lattice, which exhibits topological defects in the form of vortices. They tend to organize into vortex lines that bear close analogies with global cosmic strings. Therefore, this model serves as a testbed for studying the dynamics of topological defects. It undergoes a second order phase transition, hence it is appropriate for investigating the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. In this regard, we explore the persistence of topological defects when the temperature is rapidly reduced from above to below the critical temperature; this cooling (or "quenching") process takes the system out of equilibrium. We probe a wide range of inverse cooling rates $\tau_{\rm Q}$ and final temperatures, employing distinct Monte Carlo algorithms. The results consistently show that the density of persisting topological defects follows a power-law in $\tau_{\rm Q}$, in agreement with Zurek's conjecture. On the other hand, at this point our results do not confirm Zurek's prediction for the exponent in this power-law, but its final test is still under investigation.

Semiclassics for the QCD vacuum structure through $T^2$-compactification with the baryon-'t Hooft flux

Abstract:We study QCD vacuum structure with the topological $\theta$ angle using a recently proposed semiclassical approach on $\mathbb{R}^2 \times T^2$ with the 't Hooft and baryon magnetic fluxes. Under the assumption of adiabatic continuity in this setup, the confining vacuum can be described by the dilute gas of center vortices. With this semiclassical approach, we derive the 2d effective description at small $T^2$ and successfully explain the reasonable theta dependence of the QCD vacuum: In the one-flavor QCD at $\theta = \pi$, the $CP$ symmetry is spontaneously broken for quark mass above a critical value and restored for a subcritical mass, while the $CP$ symmetry is always spontaneously broken in the multi-flavor QCD at $\theta = \pi$. From our semiclassical description, we discuss implications to the $4$d chiral Lagrangian and propose how the $\eta'$ meson should be incorporated in consistent with known global structures: The periodicity of the $\eta'$ should be extended from the naive one $2\pi$ to $2\pi N$. Additionally, we revisit the phase diagram of $N_f = 1+1$ and $N_f = 1+1+1$ QCD on the up and down quark mass plane, confirming and refining the existence of the $CP$-broken Dashen phase.

Topological Data Analysis of Monopole Current Networks in $U(1)$ Lattice Gauge Theory

Abstract:In $4$-dimensional pure compact $U(1)$ lattice gauge theory, we analyse topological aspects of the dynamics of monopoles across the deconfinement phase transition. We do this using tools from Topological Data Analysis (TDA). We demonstrate that observables constructed from the zeroth and first homology groups of monopole current networks may be used to quantitatively and robustly locate the critical inverse coupling $\beta_{c}$ through finite-size scaling. Our method provides a mathematically robust framework for the characterisation of topological invariants related to monopole currents, putting on firmer ground earlier investigations. Moreover, our approach can be generalised to the study of Abelian monopoles in non-Abelian gauge theories.

Topological Cosets via Anyon Condensation and Applications to Gapped $\mathrm{\bf{QCD_{2}}}$

Abstract:The coset construction of two-dimensional conformal field theory (2D CFT) defines a 2D CFT by taking the quotient of two previously known chiral algebras. In this work, we use the methods of non-abelian (non-invertible) anyon condensation to describe 2D topological cosets, defined by the special case where the quotient of chiral algebras is a conformal embedding. In this case, the coset has zero central charge, and the coset theory is thus purely topological. Using non-abelian anyon condensation we describe in general the spectrum of line and local operators as well as their fusion, operator product expansion, and the action of the lines on local operators. An important application of our results is to QCD$_{2}$ with massless fermions in any representation that leads to a gapped phase, where topological cosets (conjecturally) describe the infrared fixed point. We discuss several such examples in detail. For instance, we find that the $Spin(8)_{1}/SU(3)_{3}$ and $Spin(16)_{1}/Spin(9)_{2}$ topological cosets appearing at the infrared fixed point of appropriate QCD$_{2}$ theories are described by $\mathbb{Z}_{2} \times \mathbb{Z}_{2}$ triality and $\mathbb{Z}_{2} \times \mathrm{Rep(S_{3})}$ fusion categories respectively. Additionally, using this setup, we argue that chiral $Spin(8)$ QCD$_{2}$ with massless chiral fermions in the vectorial and spinorial representations is not only gapped, but moreover trivially gapped, with a unique ground state.
