Abstract:The present paper proposes a simple fabrication technique of the high quality lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) thick films with a single coating and using a thick photoresist SU-8, which call for lift-off technique. The PZT films with the thickness of 100mum or higher were crack-free and had good morphology. The PZT films with perfect perovskite structure had excellent piezoelectric property and the d(33) was about 170pC/N. Ferroelectric hysteresis loop was measured, and the remnant polarization (P-r) of the PZT film was about 25muC/cm(2) and the coercive field (E-C) was about 27kV/cm. In the radio-frequency (RF) region, the dielectric constant was about 350 and the dielectric loss was less than 0.01.

Abstract:Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) films have shown great potential in piezoelectric micro-electronic-mechanical system (piezo-MEMS) owing to their strong piezoelectric response. However, the fabrication of PZT films on wafer-level suffers with achieving excellent uniformity and properties. Here, we successfully prepared perovskite PZT films with similar epitaxial multilayered structure and crystallographic orientation on 3-inch silicon wafers, by introducing a rapid thermal annealing (RTA) process. Compared to films without RTA treatment, these films exhibit (001) crystallographic orientation at certain composition that expecting morphotropic phase boundary. Furthermore, dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties on different positions only fluctuate within 5%. The relatively dielectric constant, loss, remnant polarization and transverse piezoelectric coefficient are 850, 0.1, 38 μC/cm2 and −10 C/m2, respectively. Both uniformity and properties have reached the requirement for the design and fabrication of piezo-MEMS devices. This broadens the design and fabrication criteria for piezo-MEMS, particularly for piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers.

Processing and properties of porous PZT ceramics from particle-stabilized foams via gel casting

Abstract:In the present work, porous lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics with porosity ranging from 27.8% to 72.4% were fabricated by the gel-casting process of particle-stabilized wet foams with the initial solid loading of 10-30vol%. The phase, the microstructure, the dielectric property, and the piezoelectric property were characterized. The relative permittivity (epsilon r) and longitudinal piezoelectric strain coefficient (d33) of the investigated samples decreased with increasing porosity. Both the values of hydrostatic strain coefficient (dh) and hydrostatic voltage coefficient (gh) increased moderately with the increase in porosity, which was beneficial for enhancing the value of hydrostatic figure of merit (HFOM). As a result, the prepared sample possessed a maximal HFOM value of 15236x10-15Pa-1 with the porosity of 72.4%. The acoustic impedance (Z) of specimens decreased linearly with increasing porosity, and had the lowest value of 1.95 MRayls, making them promising candidates for application of medical ultrasonic imaging or underwater sonar detectors.
Fabrication and properties of 3-3 type PZT-ordinary Portland cement composites

Abstract:In this study, porous lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics with porosity ranging from 46.4% to 82.3% were produced by the gel casting technology of particle-stabilized ceramic foams with the solid loading of 5-25 vol%, then the Portland cement paste was cast in porous PZT ceramics with continuous vibration to fabricate 3-3 type cement-based piezoelectric composites. The microstructure, dielectric, piezoelectric, and electromechanical coupling properties of the composites were characterized. With the increase in initial solid loading of PZT slurry, both the porosity, open porosity and pore size of porous PZT ceramics decreased correspondingly, which have prevented the filling of cement paste into the porous ceramics and led to the increment of PZT content in the composites. Increase in the PZT content contributed to the relative permittivity (epsilon(r)) and longitudinal piezoelectric strain coefficient (d(33)), and a resultant reduction in piezoelectric voltage coefficient (g(33)). The prepared composites possessed a maximal thickness electromechanical coupling coefficient (K-t) value of 41.22%, higher than that of planar electromechanical coupling coefficient (K-p), indicating enhanced thickness mode oscillations of the composite. With the increase in PZT volume fraction, the PZT-cement composites turned from typical 3-3 structure to appoximate sandwich structure gradually, leading to more energy loss during electromechanical process and obvious decrease of the mechanical quality factor (Q(m)). The acoustic impedance (Z) of specimens ranged from 6.69 to 8.27 MRayls, close to that of cement materials (similar to 10 MRayls), making them promising candidate for application in civil engineering.

Abstract:A modified sol-gel process for lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin film deposition has been presented to overcome the problems of film cracking, short-circuiting and diffusion of PZT to substrate. In the modified sol-gel process, we pattern the pyrolyzed PZT thin film by wet etching before every treatment of post-annealing for crystallization. The modification brings two advantages: film cracking is eliminated due to the reduction of internal stress; PZT diffusion to substrate is avoided due to removing PZT film from the areas without Pt buffer layer before high-temperature post-annealing treatment. The modified sol-gel process is applied to fabrication of piezoelectric cantilever, which includes sputtering and patterning top and bottom electrodes, depositing PZT layer by the modified sol-gel process and releasing cantilever structure by a double side deep reaction ion etching process. After the fabrication, performances of PZT thin film such as hysteresis loop upon polarization and X-ray diffraction pattern are evaluated. Finally, resonant frequency is measured for the fabricated piezoelectric cantilever to verify its self-exited capability for future applications as micro sensors or actuators. These experimental results indicate that the modified sol-gel process for PZT deposition can greatly improve quality and yield rate of the fabrication of piezoelectric devices without causing any adverse effect.

Abstract:The present paper proposes a simple fabrication technique of high quality PZT thick films that call for silicon mold technique. The fabrication process adopts the silicon with back window obtained from silicon anisotropic etching as the silicon mold, and the improved PZT sol is dispensed in the silicon mold. The PZT films obtained using single spin coating with the thickness of l00 /spl mu/ m or higher, which is over the depth of back window of the silicon substrate, are crack-free and have good morphology. The PZT films with perfect perovskite structure have excellent piezoelectric property and the d/sub 33/ is about 170pC/N. Ferroelectric hysteresis loops are measured, and the remnant polarization (P/sub r/) of the PZT ceramics pellet is about 25 /spl mu/C/cm/sup 2/ and the coercive field (E/sub C/) is about 27kV/cm. SH2-B and SIRP: JAK2 binding proteins that modulate the actions of growth hormone.

Abstract:Growth hormone (GH) has long been known to be a primary determinant of body height and an important regulator of body metabolism, yet the cellular and molecular bases for these effects of GH are only beginning to be understood. In 1993, GH receptor (GHR) was first observed to bind to the tyrosine kinase JAK2. GH increased JAK2's affinity for GHR, potently activated JAK2, and stimulated the phosphorylation of tyrosines within JAK2 and the cytoplasmic domain of GHR. In the intervening six years, a variety of signaling molecules have been identified that are tyrosyl phosphorylated in response to GH, presumably by the activated JAK2. These signaling molecules include 1) the latent cytoplasmic transcription factors--designated signal transducers and activators of transcription (Stats)--that have been implicated in the regulation of a variety of GH-dependent genes; 2) Shc proteins that lead to activation of the Ras-MAP kinase pathway: and 3) insulin receptor substrate (IRS) proteins that bind and thereby activate phosphatidylinositol 3' kinase and presumably other proteins. Recently, we have identified two additional signaling molecules for GH that bind to JAK2 and are phosphorylated on tyrosines in response to GH: SH2-B and signal regulated protein (SIRP). Based upon amino acid sequence analysis, SH2-B is presumed to be a cytoplasmic adapter protein. It binds with high affinity via its SH2 domain to phosphorylated tyrosines within JAK2. GH-induced binding of SH2-B to JAK2 via this site potently activates JAK2, leading to enhanced tyrosyl phosphorylation of Stat proteins and other cellular proteins. Because of its other potential protein-protein interaction domains and its recruitment and phosphorylation by kinases that are not activated by SH2-B, SH2-B is thought likely to mediate other, more-specific actions of GH, as yet to be determined. SIRP is a transmembrane protein that is now known to bind to integrin-associated protein. It appears to bind directly to JAK2 by a process that does not require tyrosyl phosphorylation, although is itself highly phosphorylated on tyrosines in response to GH. The phosphorylated SIRP recruits one or more molecules of the tyrosine phosphatase SHP2 that, in turn, de-phosphorylates SIRP and most likely JAK2. Thus, SIRP is predicted to be a negative regulator of GH action. It seems likely that the diverse actions of GH will be found to require coordinated interaction of all of these signaling proteins with each other as well as with other signaling molecules that are activated by GH and the numerous other ligands that are present at cells during a response to GH.
FABRICATION AND PROPERTIES OF FINE SCALE 1-3 PZT/EPOXY PIEZOELECTRIC COMPOSITES

Abstract:A modified cutfill process was developed in this study, by which a fine-scale 13 epoxy matrix composite PE2 containing lead zirconate titanate (PZT) arrays of 120μm in width and a height/width ratio of higher than 10 was produced. The preparation factors′effect on the properties of the composites were discussed. The results show that the resonant mode of the composites is single mode, and the acoustic impedance (4.5—5.5 Mrayl) of the composites is obviously less than that (31 Mrayl) of the PZT ceramic.

Abstract:[100]-textured Nb-doped Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 (PNZT) films with different thicknesses from 80 to 600 nm were fabricated on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrates by a sol−gel process. It was found that the local effective longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient, d33, initially increased with film thickness and reached a peak (∼220 pm/V) for an intermediate thickness (∼350 nm), but then decreased with further increasing thickness. XRD and Raman analyses revealed that, even for an identical Zr/Ti ratio of 52/48, which is near the morphotropic phase boundary of bulk PZT, a pseudophase transition from a tetragonal structure to a rhombohedral structure was induced in [100]-textured PNZT films because of changes in stress with film thickness. This finding revealed a special approach to enhance the piezoelectric properties of PZT-based thin films by combining compositional optimization and the substrate constraint effect.

Abstract:We have studied the processing of piezoelectric thick films using electrophoretic deposition (EPD) for high-frequency ultrasound applications. Lead-zirconium-titanate (PZT) particles synthetized by solid states synthesis were dispersed in ethanol using ammonium polyacrylate (PAA). The electrophoretic deposition of PZT particles was performed at a constant-current mode. PZT thick-films deposited at 1 mA for 60 seconds were sintered at 900oC for 2 hours in a PbO-controlled atmosphere. The scanning-electron microscopy (SEM) analysis shows that the thickness of PZT layer is uniform and that the pores are homogeneously distributed within the layer. The complex electrical impedance was measured and fitted by KLM scheme in order to deduce the dielectric, mechanical and piezoelectric parameters of the thick-films. The density and thickness of PZT thick films are used as inputs and the thickness coupling factor kt, dielectric constant at constant strain and resonant frequency are deduced. The results show that homogeneous PZT thick-film structures with tailored thickness and density prepared by EPD and sintering having a resonant frequency around 20 MHz can be used for noninvasive medical ultrasound imaging and diagnostics.

Abstract:Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramic microstructures have been obtained by two reciprocal approaches, both of which are batch-fabrication-oriented. One approach starts from PZT powders using a lost Si mold technique, where a Si mold is prepared by deep reactive ion etching (RIE) and sintering of PZT after slurry casting is performed by glass-encapsulated hot isostatic pressing (HIP). The Si mold is finally etched away selectively by XeF 2 . The resulting PZT structures are of high density and accurately reflect the complementary shapes of the Si molds. The highest aspect ratio is over 15. Fine PZT rod arrays for ultrasonic microtransducers and parallel plates for stacked piezoelectric microactuators have been achieved. The finest rods are 7 μm square in cross section, 90 μm in height and 1 2 μm in period; the 25-μm-pitch PZT plates are 18 μm thick and 130 μm high. The other approach is to fabricate bulk PZT substrates into microstructures by deep RIE using SF 6 gas with electroplated Ni films as protective masks. The etch depth is 70 μm and the etch rate is 0.3 μm/min.
High-field dielectric properties and high-power performance of Fe-modified PZN–PMS–PZT piezoelectric ceramics

Abstract:In this work, the 0.04Pb(Zn 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 -0.05Pb(Mn 1/3 Sb 2/3 )O 3 – x PbZrO 3 –(0.91− x )PbTiO 3 + y mol%Fe 2 O 3 ( x PZ-PZNMST + y %Fe; x = 0.440–0.460, y = 0.00–0.15) piezoelectric ceramics were synthesized by solid-state reaction method. The 0.45PZ-PZNMST + 0.10%Fe ceramic with morphotropic phase boundary shows optimum comprehensive electromechanical properties with d 33 = 401 pC/N, k p =0.6, tan δ = 0.39%, Q m =921, and T c = 314 °C. In addition, a low high-field tan δ of 0.78% at 200 V/mm is achieved in the 0.45PZ-PZNMST + 0.10%Fe ceramic. Therefore, a high vibration velocity of 0.80 m/s is obtained in 0.45PZ-PZNMST + 0.10%Fe ceramic. The maximum mechanical energy density of 0.45PZ-PZNMST + 0.10%Fe ceramic reaches 2500 J/m 3 , which is about four times that of commercial PZT4 ceramics (620 J/m 3 ). The 0.45PZ-PZNMST + 0.10%Fe ceramic with good high-power performance shows a potential application in high-power ultrasonic transducers.

Abstract:Porous lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics are of great interest for hydrophones and medical imaging applications. The 0-3 type and 3-3 type porous PZT ceramics have been extensively discussed these years but the 1-3 type PZT ceramics have seldom been reported. This paper describes the fabrication process to obtain such 1-3 type porous PZT ceramics with one-dimensional pore channels by using tert-butyl alcohol-based directional freeze-casting method, and presents analysis of both microstructure and functional properties. The 1-3 type porous PZT ceramics with porosity ranging from 28.1% to 68.7% were fabricated by adjusting initial solid loading. With the increase of porosity, relative permittivity (epsilon(r)) decreased slightly and longitude piezoelectric coefficient (d(33)) exhibited only a small decline, which could be attributed to the special 1-3 type porous structure. The resultant samples with 61.3% porosity possessed a high value of hydrostatic figure of merit, > 100 times higher than that of dense materials. The acoustic impedance (Z) showed a linear dependence on porosity with the lowest magnitude reaching 1.3 MRayls (106 kg center dot(m2 center dot s)-1), matching very well with biological tissue or water.

Abstract:Ultra-fine Pb(Zr0.3, Ti0.7)O3 (PZT) fibers with diameters down to ∼100nm have been synthesized by combing the sol–gel method and elecrospinning technique. The as-spun nanoscopic PZT/PVP composite fibers were annealed for 30min at different temperatures, respectively. The morphology and crystalline structure of the sintered Pb(Zr0.3Ti0.7)O3 (PZT) nanofibers were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), micro-Raman spectroscopy. The ferroelectronic and piezoelectric properties of single PZT nanofiber are investigated by using piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). The results showed that the well crystallized PZT fibers with diameter of ∼100nm can achieve a d33 of ∼83.4pm/V, which is much larger than that of the reported PZT thin film, and the domain can be successfully switched, with the switch domain polarity of about 180°. All these show promise for new nanoscale ferroelectronic devices.
Fabrication of Porous PZT–PZN Piezoelectric Ceramics With High Hydrostatic Figure of Merits Using Camphene‐Based Freeze Casting

Abstract:Porous lead zirconate titanate–lead zinc niobate (PZT–PZN) piezoelectric ceramics with interconnected pore channels were fabricated using the camphene-based freeze-casting method. In this method, warm PZT–PZN/camphene slurries with various solid loadings (10, 15, 20, and 25 vol%) were prepared by ball milling at 60°C and then cast into molds at 20°C, resulting in the formation of solidified green bodies comprised of three-dimensionally interconnected camphene dendrite networks and concentrated ceramic particle walls. After the removal of the frozen camphene via sublimation, the samples were sintered at 1200°C for 2 h. All of the fabricated samples showed highly porous structures, consisting of fully dense PZT–PZN walls without defects, such as cracks or pores. As the initial solid loading was decreased from 25 to 10 vol%, the porosity was linearly increased from 50% to 82%. This increase in the porosity led to a reduction in the permittivity, a moderate decline in the d33 value, and a rapid decline in the d31 value, which endowed the porous samples with a high hydrostatic figure of merit (HFOM). The highest HFOM value of 35650 × 10−15 Pa−1 was achieved for the sample with a porosity of 82%, as well as ɛ33=284, dh=298 pC/N, and gh=118 × 10−3 V·(m·Pa)−1.

Abstract:Porous lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics with three-dimensionally interconnected pores were prepared using a novel tert-butyl alcohol-based gel-casting process, an unconventional technique in acquiring high-porosity ceramics. In the present work, PZT ceramics with porosity ranging from 31.3% to 58.6% were fabricated by adjusting the initial solid loading and sintering temperature. The fabricated samples were characterized in terms of both porous structure and functional properties to clarify the underlying correlation. With the increase of porosity, relative permittivity (epsilon(r)) decreased to a significantly low value compared with dense PZT ceramics while the longitude piezoelectric coefficient (d(33)) exhibited a moderate decline, which could be attributed to the unique structure with homogeneous pore distribution. As a result, the resultant samples possessed a high value of hydrostatic figure of merit, > 100 times higher than that of dense materials. The acoustic impedance (Z) showed a linear dependence on porosity with the lowest magnitude reaching 3.0 MRayls (106 kg center dot(m2 center dot s)-1), hopefully leading to enhanced coupling with biological tissue or water.
High-frequency properties of PZT for RF-communication applications

Abstract:Lead–zirconate–titanate (PbZr0.53Ti0.47O3) nano powders and ceramics were prepared using a sol–gel method. Phase characterization of the lead–zirconate–titanate (PZT) material was identified by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Micro-structure of the samples was examined by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Ferroelectric hysteresis loop, high-frequency dielectric response and piezoelectric constant d33 were measured. The remnant polarization (Pr) of the PZT ceramics pellet is about 20 μC cm−2 and the coercive field (EC) is about 30 kV cm−1. The dielectric constant is about 900 and the dielectric loss is lower than 0.02 in the radio-frequency (RF) region. The piezoelectric constant d33 is about 170 pC N−1. The experimental results show that the PZT material can be suitable for the applications of miniature RF front-end devices and force-electric coupling devices.

Abstract:Flexible piezoelectric composite films have piezoelectric properties and good flexibility. Therefore, it has broad application prospects in wearable electronic products, electric sensors, etc. In this paper, traditional solid-state and hydrothermal methods were used to prepare Pb(Zr 0.52 Ti 0.48 ) (PZT) and Pb 0.95 Sr 0.05 (Zr 0.52 Ti 0.48 ) (PSZT) ceramic fillers. PZT-based/P(VDF-TrFE) composite films with a thickness of 0.1 mm were prepared by introducing fillers into the matrix by solution casting method, and the effect of fillers on the properties of flexible piezoelectric composite films was investigated. The experimental results show that the piezoelectric and dielectric properties of the flexible piezoelectric composite film can be improved by changing the processing method or the formula of the piezoelectric ceramic fillers with a better piezoelectric property. Compared with the pure P(VDF-TrFE) film, the introduction of ceramic fillers or varying the processing method of ceramic fillers can both stimulate a phase transition from α to β of the P(VDF-TrFE) matrix. Among them, the composite film with the PSZT filler prepared through the hydrothermal method has the most β phase content. It has the best electrical properties and exhibits good tensile strength and elongation at break. Its d 33 = 18.3 pC/N, ε r = 14, tan δ = 0.16, the maximum output voltage is 6.08 V, the tensile strength is 37.1 MPa, and the elongation at break is 757.7%.

Abstract:In this paper, two methods (magnetic stirring and mechanical ball milling) were used to modify the surface of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) particles. Then, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/PZT piezoelectric films were prepared by extrusion casting and solvent casting. We investigated the mechanical, dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric properties, as well as the breakdown strength of the PVDF/PZT films. We found that adding PZT particles improved the mechanical stability of the films under variable temperature conditions. Modification by the UP-105 titanate coupling reagent further improved the combination and dispersion of PZT@105 particles in PVDF. The films prepared by extrusion casting showed improved properties in terms of density, dielectric constant, breakdown strength, and piezoelectric coefficient. The piezoelectric coefficient (d33) of the PVDF/PZT@105 composite film (with 25 wt.% PZT@105) prepared by extrusion casting reached 35 pC/N, and the electromechanical strain ratio was almost 1.6%, which is higher than that of piezoelectric ceramics.
