Abstract:The proton radius puzzle is known as the discrepancy of the proton radius, obtained from muonic hydrogen spectroscopy (obtained as being roughly equal to 0.84fm), and the proton radius obtained from (ordinary) hydrogen spectroscopy where a number of measurements involving highly excited states have traditionally favored a value of about 0.88fm. Recently, a number of measurements of hydrogen transitions by the Munich (Garching) groups (notably, several hyperfine-resolved sublevels of the 2S-4P) and by the group at the University of Toronto (2S-2P_1/2) have led to transition frequency data consistent with the smaller proton radius of about 0.84fm. A recent measurement of the 2S-8D transition by a group at Colorado State University leads to a proton radius of about $0.86$\,fm, in between the two aforementioned results. The current situation points to a possible, purely experimental, resolution of the proton radius puzzle. However, a closer look at the situation reveals that the situation may be somewhat less clear, raising the question of whether or not the proton radius puzzle has been conclusively solved, and opening up interesting experimental possiblities at TRIUMF/ARIEL.

Abstract:The charge radius of the proton can be determined using two different kinds of experiments: the spectroscopy technique, measuring the hyperfine structure of hydrogen atoms, and the scattering technique, deducing the radius from elastic lepton scattering off a proton target. These two methods lead to quite different results, a discrepancy known as the "proton radius puzzle ". To shed light on this problem, we have proposed a novel method for the determination of spatial moments from densities expressed in the momentum space. This method provides a direct access not only to the second order moment, directly related to the proton radius, but to all moments of any real order larger than -3. The method is applied to the global analysis of proton electric form factor experimental data from Rosenbluth separation and low-$Q^2$ experiments, paying specific attention to the evaluation of the systematic errors. Within this analysis, the integer order moments of the proton charge density are evaluated, the moment of second order leading to a new determination of the proton charge radius.

Abstract:The proton-radius puzzle refers to the discrepancy observed in measurements of the proton's charge radius when using different methods. This inconsistency has prompted extensive research and debate within the physics community, as it challenges the understanding of quantum electrodynamics and the fundamental properties of protons. In the present study, we determine the charge and magnetic radii of the proton and neutron through a global analysis of the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) at zero skewness for the first time. Our results challenge the measurements or analyses in which the nucleon's radii are extracted considering just a particular experiment or observable, or using only data points covering particular kinematic regions. We emphasize that simultaneous analysis of all available experimental data related to the radii of the nucleons would be preferable to determine their exact values. The final results obtained from our analysis by this way are: $ r_{pE} = 0.8558 \pm 0.0135~\textrm{fm} $, $ r_{pM} = 0.8268 \pm 0.0533~\textrm{fm} $, $ \left<r_{nE}^2\right> = -0.1181 \pm 0.0270~\textrm{fm}^2 $, and $ r_{nM} = 0.8367 \pm 0.0845~\textrm{fm} $.

Abstract:We review determinations of the electric proton charge radius from a diverse set of low-energy observables. We explore under which conditions it can be related to Wilson coefficients of appropriate effective field theories. This discussion is generalized to other low-energy constants. This provides us with a unified framework to deal with a set of low-energy constants of the proton associated with its electromagnetic interactions. Unambiguous definitions of these objects are given, as well as their relation with expectation values of QCD operators. We show that the proton radius obtained from spectroscopy and lepton-proton scattering (when both the lepton and proton move with nonrelativistic velocities) is related to the same object of the underlying field theory with ${\cal O}(\alpha)$ precision. The model dependence of these analyses is discussed. The prospects of constructing effective field theories valid for the kinematic configuration of present, or near-future, lepton-proton scattering experiments are discussed.

Abstract:The "proton radius puzzle" was recently solved by reducing the four-standard deviation discrepancy between the results for electronic hydrogen ($H$) and muonic hydrogen ($\mu H$) atoms to $3.3$ value. The value of the root-mean-square radius of the proton ($r_p$), extracted from experiments on measuring the one-photon $2s-4p$ transition and the Lamb shift in hydrogen, is now $0.8335(95)$ fm, that is in good agreement with the muonic hydrogen experiments, $0.84087(39)$ fm. Even so, these values deviate significantly from the CODATA value, which is determined as the average using the results for various spectral lines including two-photon transitions in the hydrogen atom. The solution of the proton radius puzzle was realized by taking into account the influence of interference effect in one-photon scattering processes. The importance of interfering effects in atomic frequencies measurements gives an impetus to the study of experiments based on two-photon spectroscopy with the suchlike thoroughness. It is shown here that the effect of interfering pathways for two-photon $2s-nd$ transitions in a hydrogen atom is also significant in determining the proton charge radius and Rydberg constant.

Abstract:The proton radius puzzle refers to the ≈7σ discrepancy that exists between the proton charge radius determined from muonic hydrogen and that determined from electronic hydrogen spectroscopy and electron-proton scattering. One possible partial resolution to the puzzle includes errors in the extraction of the proton radius from ep elastic scattering data. This possibility is made plausible by certain fits that extract a smaller proton radius from the scattering data consistent with that determined from muonic hydrogen. The reliability of some of these fits that yield a smaller proton radius was studied. We found that fits of form factor data with a truncated polynomial fit are unreliable and systematically give values for the proton radius that are too small. Additionally, a polynomial fit with a χreduced2≈1 is not a sufficient indication for a reliable result.

Abstract:Recent measurements of the Lamb shift of muonic helium-4 ions were used to infer the alpha particle charge radius. The value found is compatible with the radius extracted from the analysis of the electron-helium scattering. Thus, the new spectroscopic data put additional empiric bounds on some free parameters of certain physics theories beyond the Standard Model. In this paper, we analyze the new data in the context of large extra-dimensional theories. Specifically, we calculate the influence of the radion, the scalar degree of freedom of the higher-dimensional gravity, on the energy difference between the 2S and 2P levels of this exotic atom. The radion field is related to fluctuations of the volume of the supplementary space, and, in comparison with the tensorial degrees of freedom, it couples to matter in a different way. Moreover, as some stabilization mechanism acts exclusively on the scalar degree of freedom, the tensor and scalar fields should be treated as phenomenologically independent quantities. Based on the spectroscopic data of muonic helium, we find constraints for the effective energy scale of the radion as a function of the alpha particle radius. Then, we discuss the implications of these new constraints on the proton radius puzzle.

Abstract:The "proton radius puzzle" is the 7-standard-deviations difference of the charge radius of the proton as determined from the Lamb shift in electronic hydrogen and elastic electron scattering off the proton on the one side and the high precision determination from the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen on the other side. So far the explanation of this difference has been mostly searched for in the limitations of the non-muonic experiments as the extrapolation to $Q^2 \rightarrow 0$ GeV$^2$ for electron scattering. Since the time scale of the vacuum polarization $e^+e^--$pairs, causing the bulk contribution of the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen, is very much shorter than that of the photon exchanges, causing the Coulomb interaction, it is argued that the muon on its orbit around the proton has to be considered as quasi particle dressed by $e^+e^--$pairs and may not be treated as a bare particle in an external Uehling potential. The proper realization of this view makes the proton radius puzzle disappear. The value for the rms charge radius of the proton determined from the muonic Lamb shift, taking this distinction into account, is $r_p = 0.87455(48) \textrm{fm}$ in agreement with the CODATA-2010 value.

Abstract:Static properties of hadrons such as their radii and other moments of the electric and magnetic distributions can only be extracted using theoretical methods and not directly measured from experiments. As a result, discrepancies between the extracted values from different precision measurements can exist. The proton charge radius, $r_p$, which is either extracted from electron proton elastic scattering data or from hydrogen atom spectroscopy seems to be no exception. The value $r_p = 0.84087(39)$ fm extracted from muonic hydrogen spectroscopy is about 4% smaller than that obtained from electron proton scattering or standard hydrogen spectroscopy. The resolution of this so called proton radius puzzle has been attempted in many different ways over the past six years. The present article reviews these attempts with a focus on the methods of extracting the radius.

Abstract:A potential explanation [U.~D.~Jentschura, Phys.\ Rev.\ A {\bf 88}, 062514 (2013)] of the proton radius puzzle originating from the non-perturbative lepton-pair content of the proton is studied. Well-defined quantities that depend on this lepton-pair content are evaluated. Each is found to be of the order of $10({\alpha\over \pi})^2$, so that we find such a lepton-pair content exists in the proton. However, we argue that this relatively large result and general features of loop diagrams rule out the possibility of lepton-pair content as an explanation of the proton radius puzzle. In addition, the contributions of a class of explanations of the proton radius puzzle (for which the dependence on the $\mu p$ relative distance is as a contact interaction) is determined.

Note on the electromagnetic radius of proton

Abstract:We have analyzed the proton form factor data by using a number of phenomenological parameterizations (models) and extracting the proton electric and magnetic radii. To this end we performed a global fit to all available form factor data, with the virtual photon momentum squared $Q^2$ from $0.0002$ to nearly 10 GeV$^2$ for electric form factor and from $0.015$ to 31 GeV$^2$ for magnetic one. Special attention was given to the small structure shown by the form factor data near $Q^2 = 0.2$ GeV$^2$. It was found that different models yield different structures with different numbers of minimum at this kinematics. Since the slope of form factor in the limit of $Q^2\to 0$ is influenced by this structure, the extracted proton radii are consequently different for different models. Our finding recommends that future experiments should focus on this kinematics instead of low $Q^2$. Experimental data with accuracies comparable to those of the latest data at low $Q^2$ would clearly help to clarify the effect of this structure on the proton charge radius. Interestingly, most of the extracted proton charge radii were found to be closer to the value obtained from the muonic hydrogen atom spectroscopy.

Precision Rydberg State Spectroscopy with Slow Electrons and Proton Radius Puzzle

Abstract:The so-called proton radius puzzle (the current discrepancy of proton radii determined from spectroscopic measurements in ordinary versus muonic hydrogen) could be addressed via an accurate measurement of the Rydberg constant, because the proton radius and the Rydberg constant values are linked through high-precision optical spectroscopy. We argue that, with manageable additional experimental effort, it might be possible to improve circular Rydberg state spectroscopy, potentially leading to an important contribution to the clarification of the puzzle. Our proposal involves circular and near-circular Rydberg states of hydrogen with principal quantum number around $n=18$, whose classical velocity on a Bohr orbit is slower than that of the fastest macroscopic man-made object, the Parker Solar Probe. We obtain improved estimates for the quality factor of pertinent transitions, and illustrate a few recent improvements in instrumentation which facilitate pertinent experiments.

Determining the size of the proton

Abstract:A measurement of the Lamb shift of 49,881.88(76) GHz in muonic hydrogen in conjunction with theoretical estimates of the proton structure effects was recently used to deduce an accurate but rather small radius of the proton. Such an important shift in the understanding of fundamental values needs reconfirmation. Using a different approach with electromagnetic form factors of the proton, we obtain a new expression for the transition energy, $\Delta = E_{2P_{{3}/{2}}}^{f=2} - E_{2S_{{1}/{2}}}^{f=1}$, in muonic hydrogen and deduce a proton radius, $r_p = 0.831$ fm.

Abstract:There is a long-standing discrepancy between different measurements of the electric and magnetic radii of the proton. Lattice QCD calculations are a well-suited tool for theoretical investigations of the structure of the nucleon from first principles. However, all previous lattice studies of the proton's electromagnetic radii have either neglected quark-disconnected contributions or were not extrapolated to the continuum and infinite-volume limit. Here, we present results for the electromagnetic form factors of the proton and neutron computed on the ( 2+1 )-flavor coordinated lattice simulations (CLS) ensembles including both quark-connected and -disconnected contributions. From simultaneous fits to the Q2 -, pion-mass, lattice-spacing, and finite-volume dependence of the form factors, we determine the electric and magnetic radii and the magnetic moments of the proton and neutron. For the proton, we obtain as our final values ⟨rE2⟩p=(0.672±0.014(stat)±0.018(syst)) fm2 , ⟨rM2⟩p=(0.658±0.012(stat)±0.008(syst)) fm2 , and μMp=(2.739±0.063(stat)±0.018(syst) . The magnetic moment is in good agreement with the experimental value, as is the one of the neutron. On the one hand, our result for the electric (charge) radius of the proton clearly points towards a small value, as favored by muonic hydrogen spectroscopy and the recent ep -scattering experiment by PRad. Abstract:Accurate knowledge of the charge and Zemach radii of the proton is essential, not only for understanding its structure but also as input for tests of bound-state quantum electrodynamics and its predictions for the energy levels of hydrogen. These radii may be extracted from the laser spectroscopy of muonic hydrogen (μp, that is, a proton orbited by a muon). We measured the 2S(1/2)(F=0)-2P(3/2)(F=1) transition frequency in μp to be 54611.16(1.05) gigahertz (numbers in parentheses indicate one standard deviation of uncertainty) and reevaluated the 2S(1/2)(F=1)-2P(3/2)(F=2) transition frequency, yielding 49881.35(65) gigahertz. From the measurements, we determined the Zemach radius, r(Z) = 1.082(37) femtometers, and the magnetic radius, r(M) = 0.87(6) femtometer, of the proton. We also extracted the charge radius, r(E) = 0.84087(39) femtometer, with an order of magnitude more precision than the 2010-CODATA value and at 7σ variance with respect to it, thus reinforcing the proton radius puzzle.

Abstract:Using a procedure based on interpolation via continued fractions supplemented by statistical sampling, we analyze proton magnetic form factor data obtained via electron+proton scattering on Q(2) is an element of [0.027, 0.55] GeV2 with the goal of determining the proton magnetic radius. The approach avoids assumptions about the function form used for data interpolation and ensuing extrapolation onto Q(2) similar or equal to 0 for extraction of the form factor slope. In this way, we find r(M) = 0.817(27) fm. Regarding the difference between proton electric and magnetic radii calculated in this way, extant data are seen to be compatible with the possibility that the slopes of the proton Dirac and Pauli form factors, F-1,F-2 (Q(2)), are not truly independent observables; to wit, the difference F-1'(0) - F-2'(0)/kappa(p) = [1 + kappa(p)]/[4m(p)(2)], viz., the proton Foldy term.
On the pi pi continuum in the nucleon form factors and the proton radius puzzle

Abstract:We present an improved determination of the $\pi\pi$ continuum contribution to the isovector spectral functions of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors. Our analysis includes the most up-to-date results for the $\pi\pi\to\bar N N$ partial waves extracted from Roy-Steiner equations, consistent input for the pion vector form factor, and a thorough discussion of isospin-violating effects and uncertainty estimates. As an application, we consider the $\pi\pi$ contribution to the isovector electric and magnetic radii by means of sum rules, which, in combination with the accurately known neutron electric radius, are found to slightly prefer a small proton charge radius.

The Proton Radius from Electron Scattering Data

Abstract:[Background] The proton charge radius extracted from recent muonic hydrogen Lamb shift measurements is significantly smaller than that extracted from atomic hydrogen and electron scattering measurements. [Purpose] In an attempt to understand the discrepancy, we review high-precision electron scattering results from Mainz, Jefferson Lab, Saskatoon and Stanford. [Method] We make use of stepwise regression techniques using the $F$-test as well as the Akaike information criterion to systematically determine the predictive variables to use for a given set and range of electron scattering data as well as to provide multivariate error estimates. [Results] Starting with the precision, low four-momentum transfer ($Q^2$) data from Mainz (1980) and Saskatoon (1974), we find that a stepwise regression of the Maclaurin series using the $F$-test as well as the Akaike information criterion justify using a linear extrapolation which yields a value for the proton radius that is consistent with the result obtained from muonic hydrogen measurements. Applying the same Maclaurin series and statistical criteria to the 2014 Rosenbluth results on $G_E$ from Mainz, we again find that the stepwise regression tends to favor a radius consistent with the muonic hydrogen radius but produces results that are extremely sensitive to the range of data included in the fit. Making use of the high-$Q^2$ data on $G_E$ to select functions which extrapolate to high $Q^2$, we find that a Padé ($N=M=1$) statistical model works remarkably well, as does a dipole function with a 0.84 fm radius, $G_E(Q^2) = ( 1 + Q^2/0.66\,\mathrm{GeV}^2)^{-2}$. [Conclusions] From this statistical analysis, we conclude that the electron scattering result and the muonic hydrogen result are consistent. It is the atomic hydrogen results that are the outliers.
