Abstract:We give a transparent algebraic formulation of our pictorial approach to the reflection positivity (RP), that we introduced in a previous paper. We apply this quantization to the 2+1 Levin–Wen model to obtain 1+1 anyonic/quantum spin chain theory on the boundary, possibly entangled in the bulk. The reflection positivity property has played a central role in both mathematics and physics, as well as providing a crucial link between the two subjects. In a previous paper we gave a new geometric approach to understanding reflection positivity in terms of pictures. Here we give a transparent algebraic formulation of our pictorial approach. We use insights from this translation to establish the reflection positivity property for the fashionable Levin–Wen models with respect both to vacuum and to bulk excitations. We believe these methods will be useful for understanding a variety of other problems.

Abstract:It is well known that an element of the algebra of noncommutative *-polynomials is positive in all *-representations if and only if it is a sum of squares. This provides an effective way to determine if a given *-polynomial is positive, by searching through sums of squares decompositions. We show that no such procedure exists for the tensor product of two noncommutative *-polynomial algebras: determining whether a *-polynomial of such an algebra is positive is coRE-hard. We also show that it is coRE-hard to determine whether a noncommutative *-polynomial is trace-positive. Our results hold if noncommutative *-polynomial algebras are replaced by other sufficiently free algebras such as group algebras of free groups or free products of cyclic groups.

Abstract:Reflection positivity constitutes an integral prerequisite in the Osterwalder-Schrader reconstruction theorem which relates quantum field theories defined on Euclidean space to their Lorentzian signature counterparts. In this work we rigorously prove the violation of reflection positivity in a large class of free scalar fields with a rational propagator. This covers in particular higher-derivative theories where the propagator admits a partial fraction decomposition as well as degenerate cases including e.g. p^4 -type propagators.

K-theoretic positivity for matroids

Abstract:Hilbert polynomials have positivity properties under favorable conditions. We establish a similar "K-theoretic positivity" for matroids. As an application, for a multiplicity-free subvariety of a product of projective spaces such that the projection onto one of the factors has birational image, we show that a transformation of its K-polynomial is Lorentzian. This partially answers a conjecture of Castillo, Cid-Ruiz, Mohammadi, and Montano. As another application, we show that the h*-vector of a simplicially positive divisor on a matroid is a Macaulay vector, affirmatively answering a question of Speyer for a new infinite family of matroids.

Abstract:We present a product of pairs of pointed Hilbert spaces that, in the context of Bozėjko, Leinert and Speicher's theory of conditionally free probability, plays the role of the reduced free product of pointed Hilbert spaces, and thus gives a unified construction for the natural notions of independence defined by Muraki. We additionally provide important applications of this construction. We prove that, assuming minor restrictions, for any pair of conditionally free algebras there are copies of them that are conditionally free and also free, a property that is frequently assumed (as hypothesis) to prove several results in the literature. Finally, we give a short proof of the linearization property of the $^cR$-transform (the analog of Voiculescu's $R$-transform in the context of conditionally free probability).

Abstract:Free probability of type B was invented by Biane--Goodman--Nica, and then it was generalized by Belinschi--Shlyakhtenko and Février--Nica to infinitesimal free probability. The latter found its applications to eigenvalues of perturbed random matrices in the work of Shlyakhtenko and Cébron--Dahlqvist--Gabriel. This paper offers a new framework, called ``free probability of type B${}^\prime$'', which appears in the large size limit of independent unitarily invariant random matrices with perturbations. Our framework is related to boolean, free, (anti)monotone, cyclic-(anti)monotone and conditionally free independences. We then apply the new framework to the principal minor of unitarily invariant random matrices, which leads to the definition of a multivariate inverse Markov--Krein transform.

Abstract:We develop a novel perspective on reflection positivity (RP) on the strip by systematically developing the analogies with the unit disc and the upper half plane in the complex plane. These domains correspond to the three conjugacy classes of one-parameter groups in the Möbius group (elliptic for the disc, parabolic for the upper half plane and hyperbolic for the strip). In all cases, reflection positive functions correspond to positive functionals on $H^\infty$ for a suitable involution. For the strip, reflection positivity naturally connects with Kubo--Martin--Schwinger (KMS) conditions on the real line and further to standard pairs, as they appear in Algebraic Quantum Field Theory. We also exhibit a curious connection between Hilbert spaces on the strip and the upper half plane, based on a periodization process.

Abstract:We establish reflection positivity for Gibbs trace states defined by a certain class of Hamiltonians that describe the interaction of Majoranas on a lattice. These Hamiltonians may include many-body interactions, as long as the signs of the associated coupling constants satisfy certain restrictions. We show that reflection positivity holds on an even subalgebra of Majoranas.

Abstract:We study the properties of the analogue of R-diagonal operators in the setting of bi-free probability. Products of bi-R-diagonal pairs of operators that are $*$-bi-free are studied and powers of such pairs are found to also be bi-R-diagonal. It is moreover shown that the joint $*$-distribution of a bi-R-diagonal pair of operators remains invariant under the multiplication by a $*$-bi-free bi-Haar unitary pair and equivalent characterizations of the condition of bi-R-diagonality are developed.

Scattering and reflection positivity in relativistic Euclidean quantum mechanics

Abstract:In this paper I discuss a formulation of relativistic few-particle scattering theory where the dynamical input is a collection of reflection-positive Euclidean covariant Green functions. This formulation of relativistic quantum mechanics has the advantage that all calculations can be performed using Euclidean variables. The construction of the Hilbert space inner product requires that the Green functions are reflection positive, which is a non-trivial constraint on the dynamics. In this paper I discuss the structure of reflection positive Green functions. I show that scattering wave operators exist when the dynamics is given by a Green function with the structure discussed in this work. Techniques for computing scattering observables in this Euclidean framework are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, a connection between bi-free probability and the asymptotics of random quantum channels and tensor products of random matrices is established. Using bi-free matrix models, it is demonstrated that the spectral distribution of certain self-adjoint quantum channels and tensor products of random matrices tend to a distribution that can be obtained by an averaged sum of products of bi-freely independent pairs. Subsequently, using bi-free techniques, a Central Limit Theorem for such operator is established.

Abstract:Using the Jacobi-Trudi identity as a base, we establish parallels between the theory of totally positive integer sequences and Koszul algebras. We then focus on the case of quadric hypersurface rings and use this parallel to construct new analogues of Schur modules. We investigate some of their Lie-theoretic properties (and in more detail in a followup article) and use them to construct pure free resolutions for quadric hypersurface rings which are completely analogous to the construction given by Eisenbud, Fløystad, and Weyman in the case of polynomial rings.
