Abstract:This is a joint introduction to classical and free probability, which are twin sisters. We first review the foundations of classical probability, notably with the main limiting theorems (CLT, CCLT, PLT, CPLT), and with a look into examples coming from Lie groups and random matrices. Then we present the foundations and main results of free probability, notably with free limiting theorems, and with a look into examples coming from quantum groups and random matrices. We discuss then a number of more advanced aspects, in relation with free geometry and with subfactor theory.

Free probability of type B prime

Abstract:Free probability of type B was invented by Biane--Goodman--Nica, and then it was generalized by Belinschi--Shlyakhtenko and Février--Nica to infinitesimal free probability. The latter found its applications to eigenvalues of perturbed random matrices in the work of Shlyakhtenko and Cébron--Dahlqvist--Gabriel. This paper offers a new framework, called ``free probability of type B${}^\prime$'', which appears in the large size limit of independent unitarily invariant random matrices with perturbations. Our framework is related to boolean, free, (anti)monotone, cyclic-(anti)monotone and conditionally free independences. We then apply the new framework to the principal minor of unitarily invariant random matrices, which leads to the definition of a multivariate inverse Markov--Krein transform.

The lectures were aimed at mathematicians and mathematical physicists working in combinatorics, probability, and random matrix theory. The first lecture was a staged rediscovery of free independence from first principles, the second dealt with the additive calculus of free random variables, and the third focused on random matrix models.

Abstract:An "element-free" probability distribution is what remains of a probability distribution after we forget the elements to which the probabilities were assigned. These objects naturally arise in Bayesian statistics, in situations where elements are used as labels and their specific identity is not important. This paper develops the structural theory of element-free distributions, using multisets and category theory. We give operations for moving between element-free and ordinary distributions, and we show that these operations commute with multinomial sampling. We then exploit this theory to prove two representation theorems. These theorems show that element-free distributions provide a natural representation for key random structures in Bayesian nonparametric clustering: exchangeable random partitions, and random distributions parametrized by a base measure.

Infinitesimal non-crossing cumulants and free probability of type B

Abstract:Free probabilistic considerations of type B first appeared in a paper by Biane, Goodman and Nica in 2003. Recently, connections between type B and infinitesimal free probability were put into evidence by Belinschi and Shlyakhtenko (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0903.2721" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0903.2721">arXiv:0903.2721</a>). The interplay between "type B" and "infinitesimal" is also the object of the present paper. We study infinitesimal freeness for a family of unital subalgebras A_1, ..., A_k in an infinitesimal noncommutative probability space (A, phi, phi'), and we introduce a concept of infinitesimal non-crossing cumulant functionals for (A, phi, phi'), obtained by taking a formal derivative in the formula for usual non-crossing cumulants. We prove that the infinitesimal freeness of A_1, ... A_k is equivalent to a vanishing condition for mixed cumulants; this gives the infinitesimal counterpart for a theorem of Speicher from "usual" free probability. We show that the lattices of non-crossing partitions of type B appear in the combinatorial study of (A, phi, phi'), in the formulas for infinitesimal cumulants and when describing alternating products of infinitesimally free random variables. As an application of alternating free products, we observe the infinitesimal analogue for the well-known fact that freeness is preserved under compression with a free projection. As another application, we observe the infinitesimal analogue for a well-known procedure used to construct free families of free Poisson elements. Finally, we discuss situations when the freeness of A_1, ..., A_k in (A, phi) can be naturally upgraded to infinitesimal freeness in (A, phi, phi'), for a suitable choice of a "companion functional" phi'.

Abstract:There are important problems in physics related to the concept of probability. One of these problems is related to negative probabilities used in physics from 1930s. In spite of many demonstrations of usefulness of negative probabilities, physicists looked at them with suspicion trying to avoid this new concept in their theories. The main question that has bothered physicists is mathematical grounding and interpretation of negative probabilities. In this paper, we introduce extended probability as a probability function, which can take both positive and negative values. Defining extended probabilities in an axiomatic way, we show that classical probability is a positive section of extended probability.

Abstract:Classical probability theory supports probability measures, assigning a fixed positive real value to each event, these measures are far from satisfactory in formulating real-life occurrences. The main innovation of this paper is the introduction of a new probability measure, enabling varying probabilities that are recorded by ring elements to be assigned to events; this measure still provides a Bayesian model, resembling the classical probability model. By introducing two principles for the possible variation of a probability (also known as uncertainty, ambiguity, or imprecise probability), together with the "correct" algebraic structure allowing the framing of these principles, we present the foundations for the theory of phantom probability, generalizing classical probability theory in a natural way. This generalization preserves many of the well-known properties, as well as familiar distribution functions, of classical probability theory: moments, covariance, moment generating functions, the law of large numbers, and the central limit theorem are just a few of the instances demonstrating the concept of phantom probability theory.

Abstract:We prove a multidimensional Poisson limit theorem in free probability, and define joint free Poisson distributions in a non-commutative probability space. We define (compound) free Poisson process explicitly, similar to the definitions of (compound) Poisson processes in classical probability. We proved that the sum of finitely many freely independent compound free Poisson processes is a compound free Poisson processes. We give a step by step procedure for constructing a (compound) free Poisson process. A Karhunen-Loeve expansion theorem for centered free Poisson processes is proved. We generalize free Poisson processes to a notion of free Poisson random measures (which is slightly different from the previously defined ones in free probability, but more like an analogue of classical Poisson random measures). Then we develop the integration theory of real-valued functions with respect to a free Poisson random measure, generalizing the classical integration theory to the free probability case. We find that the integral of a function (in certain spaces of functions) with respect to a free Poisson random measure has a compound free Poisson distribution. For centered free Poisson random measures, we can get a simpler and more beautiful integration theory.

Abstract:Using the ideas of abstract algebra, we introduce the basic concepts of abstract probability theory that generalize the Kolmogorov's probability theory, possibility theory and other theories that deal with uncertainty. Based on abstract addition and multiplication, we define an abstract measure and abstract Lebesgue integral. System of Kolmogorov's axioms is criticized, after which we introduce an abstract probability measure and abstract conditional probability, show that they have recognizable probability properties. In addition, we define an abstract expected value operator as the abstract Lebesgue integral and prove its properties.
A Novel Approach to Probability

Abstract:When P indistinguishable balls are randomly distributed among L distinguishable boxes, and considering the dense system in which P much greater than L, our natural intuition tells us that the box with the average number of balls has the highest probability and that none of boxes are empty; however in reality, the probability of the empty box is always the highest. This fact is with contradistinction to sparse system in which the number of balls is smaller than the number of boxes (i.e. energy distribution in gas) in which the average value has the highest probability. Here we show that when we postulate the requirement that all possible configurations of balls in the boxes have equal probabilities, a realistic "long tail" distribution is obtained. This formalism when applied for sparse systems converges to distributions in which the average is preferred. We calculate some of the distributions resulted from this postulate and obtain most of the known distributions in nature, namely, Zipf law, Benford law, particles energy distributions, and more. Further generalization of this novel approach yields not only much better predictions for election polls, market share distribution among competing companies and so forth, but also a compelling probabilistic explanation for Planck's famous empirical finding that the energy of a photon is hv.

Abstract:Recent works have explored relations between classical and quantum statistical physics on the one hand and Voiculescu's theory of free probability on the other. Motivated by these results, the present work focuses on the notion of effective action, which is closely related to the large deviation rate function in classical probability and one-particle irreducible correlation functions in quantum field theories. The central aim is to understand how it can be defined and studied in free probability. In this respect, we introduce a suitable diagrammatic formalism.

Abstract:Probability theory can be modified in essentially one way while maintaining consistency with the basic Bayesian framework. This modification results in copies of standard probability theory for real, complex or quaternion probabilities. These copies, in turn, allow one to derive quantum theory while restoring standard probability theory in the classical limit. The argument leading to these three copies constrain physical theories in the same sense that Cox's original arguments constrain alternatives to standard probability theory. This sequence is presented in some detail with emphasis on questions beyond basic quantum theory where new insights are needed.

Abstract:These are lecture notes written at the University of Zurich during spring 2014 and spring 2015. The first part of the notes gives an introduction to probability theory. It explains the notion of random events and random variables, probability measures, expectation, distributions, characteristic function, independence of random variables, types of convergence and limit theorems. The first part is separated into two different chapters. The first chapter is about combinatorial aspects of probability theory and the second chapter is the actual introduction to probability theory, which contains the modern probability language. The second part covers conditional expectations, martingales and Markov chains, which are easily accessible after reading the first part. The chapters are exactly covered in this order and go into some more details of the respective topic.

Abstract:Strict frequentism defines probability as the limiting relative frequency in an infinite sequence. What if the limit does not exist? We present a broader theory, which is applicable also to random phenomena that exhibit diverging relative frequencies. In doing so, we develop a close connection with the theory of imprecise probability: the cluster points of relative frequencies yield a coherent upper prevision. We show that a natural frequentist definition of conditional probability recovers the generalized Bayes rule. This also suggests an independence concept, which is related to epistemic irrelevance in the imprecise probability literature. Finally, we prove constructively that, for a finite set of elementary events, there exists a sequence for which the cluster points of relative frequencies coincide with a prespecified set which demonstrates the naturalness, and arguably completeness, of our theory.
