Hénon maps with biholomorphic Kato surfaces

Abstract:Let $F$ and $G$ be generalized Hénon maps. We show that the Kato surfaces associated to the germs of $F$ and $G$ near infinity are biholomorphic if and only if $F$ and $G$ are conjugate in $\text{Aut}(\mathbb{C}^2)$. This answers a question raised by Favre in Xénelkis de Hénon's survey. We also show that two generalized Hénon maps are conjugate near infinity, if and only if they are affinely conjugate.

Abstract:Bedford and Smillie [A symbolic characterization of the horseshoe locus in the Hénon family. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys.37(5) (2017), 1389–1412] classified the dynamics of the Hénon map defined on in terms of a symbolic dynamics when is close to the boundary of the horseshoe locus. The purpose of the current article is to generalize their results for all (including the case as well). The method of the proof is first to regard as a complex dynamical system in and second to introduce the new Markov-like partition in constructed by us [On parameter loci of the Hénon family. Comm. Math. Phys.361(2) (2018), 343–414].

Abstract:Let $H$ denote a composition of complex H\'enon maps in {\bf C}$^2$. In this paper we show that the only possible compositional roots of $H$ are also compositions of H\'enon maps, and that $H$ can have compositional roots of only finitely many distinct orders.

Abstract:We study the topological dynamics of Hénon maps. For a parameter set generalizing the Benedicks-Carleson parameters (the Wang-Young parameter set) we obtain the following: The pruning front conjecture (due to Cvitanović); A kneading theory (realizing a conjecture by Benedicks and Carleson); A classification: two Hénon maps are conjugate on their strange attractors if and only if their sets of kneading sequences coincide, if and only if their folding patterns coincide. The folding pattern is a single sequence of 0s and 1s, which allows to distinguish two nonconjugate Hénon attractors in finitely many steps. The classification result relies on further development of the authors' recent inverse limit description of Hénon attractors in terms of densely branching trees.

Map enumeration from a dynamical perspective

Abstract:This contribution summarizes recent work of the authors that combines methods from dynamical systems theory (discrete Painlevé equations) and asymptotic analysis of orthogonal polynomial recurrences, to address long-standing questions in map enumeration. Given a genus $g$, we present a framework that provides the generating function for the number of maps that can be realized on a surface of that genus. In the case of 4-valent maps, our methodology leads to explicit expressions for map counts. For general even or mixed valence, the number of vertices of the map specifies the relevant order of the derivatives of the generating function that needs to be considered. Beyond summarizing our own results, we provide context for the program highlighted in this article through a brief review of the literature describing advances in map enumeration. In addition, we discuss open problems and challenges related to this fascinating area of research that stands at the intersection of statistical physics, random matrices, orthogonal polynomials, and discrete dynamical systems theory.

Abstract:We study $C^{d,r}$-Hénon-like families $(f_{a\, b})_{a\, b}$ with two parameters $(a,b)\in \mathbb R^2$. We show the existence of an open set of parameters $(a,b)\in \mathcal D$, so that a renormalization chart conjugates an iterate of $f_{a\, b}$ to a perturbation of $(x,y)\mapsto ((x^2+c_1)^2+c_2,0)$. We prove that the map $(a,b)\in \mathcal D\mapsto (c_1,c_2)$ is a $C^d$-diffeomorphism; as first numerically conjectured by Milnor in 1992. Furthermore, we show the existence of an open set of parameters $(a,b)$ so that $f_{a\, b}$ displays exactly two different renormalized Hénon-like maps whose basins union attracts Lebesgue a.e. point with bounded forward orbit. A great freedom in the choice of the renormalized parameters enables us to deduce in particular the existence of a (unperturbed) Hénon map with exactly $2$ attracting cycles (an answer to a Question by Lyubich). The proof is based on a generalization of puzzle pieces for Hénon-like maps, and on a generalization of both the affine-like formalism of Palis-Yoccoz and the cross map of Shilnikov. The distortion bounds enable us to define (for the first time) $C^{r}$ and $C^{d,r}$-renormalizations and multi-renormalizations with bounds on all the derivatives.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to study the relation between combinatorial equivalence and topological conjugacy, specifically how a certain type of combinatorial equivalence implies topological conjugacy. We introduce the concept of kneading sequences for a setting that is more general than one-dimensional dynamics: for the two-dimensional toy model family of Hénon maps introduced by Benedicks and Carleson, we define kneading sequences for their critical lines, and prove that these sequences are a complete invariant for a natural conjugacy class among the toy model family. We also establish a version of Singer's Theorem for the toy model family.

Abstract:A tautological system, introduced in [17, 18], arises as a regular holonomic system of partial differential equations that govern the period integrals of a family of complete intersections in a complex manifold X, equipped with a suitable Lie group action. In this article, we introduce two formulas-one purely algebraic, the other geometric-to compute the rank of the solution sheaf of such a system for CY hypersurfaces in a generalized flag variety. The algebraic version gives the local solution space as a Lie algebra homology group, while the geometric one as the middle de Rham cohomology of the complement of a hyperplane section in X. We use both formulas to find certain degenerate points for which the rank of the solution sheaf becomes 1. These rank 1 points appear to be good candidates for the so-called large complex structure limits in mirror symmetry. The formulas are also used to prove a conjecture of Hosono, Lian, and Yau, on the completeness of the extended GKZ system when X is P-n [12].
Horn maps of semi-parabolic Hénon maps

Abstract:We prove that horn maps associated to quadratic semi-parabolic fixed points of Hénon maps, first introduced by Bedford, Smillie, and Ueda, satisfy a weak form of the Ahlfors island property. As a consequence, two natural definitions of their Julia set (the non-normality locus of the family of iterates and the closure of the set of the repelling periodic points) coincide. As another consequence, we also prove that there exist small perturbations of semi-parabolic Hénon maps for which the Hausdorff dimension of the forward Julia set $J^+$ is arbitrarily close to 4.

Abstract:Under a natural assumption on the dynamical degrees, we prove that the Green currents associated to any Hénon-like map in any dimension have Hölder continuous super-potentials, i.e., give Hölder continuous linear functionals on suitable spaces of forms and currents. As a consequence, the unique measure of maximal entropy is the Monge-Ampère of a Hölder continuous plurisubharmonic function and has strictly positive Hausdorff dimension. Under the same assumptions, we also prove that the Green currents are woven. When they are of bidegree $(1,1)$, they are laminar. In particular, our results generalize results known until now only in algebraic settings, or in dimension 2.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the associated family of harmonic maps $\mathcal{F}: M \rightarrow G/K$ from a Riemann surface $M$ into inner symmetric spaces of compact or non-compact type which are either algebraic or totally symmetric. These notions are the two components of the definition of a harmonic map of finite uniton number, as stated by [2]. We finish this paper by comparing these to notions and by stating a conjecture.
