Abstract:Considering commutator monomials of the non-commutative associative variables $X_1,\ldots,X_n$; we determine the maximal possible number of alternating associative monomials in their noncommutative polynomial expansions. This is achieved by replacing generating functions with polytope sequences, which turn out to be finitely generated in some sense.

Abstract:Let K〈X〉 be a finite generated free associative algebra over a field K of characteristic zero and let f,g∈K〈X〉 generate their centralizer respectively. Assume that the f and g are algebraically independent, the leading homogeneous components of f and g are algebraically dependent and deg(f)∤deg(g), deg(g)∤deg(f). In this article, we construct a counterexample to a conjecture of Jie-Tai Yu that deg([f,g])>min{deg(f),deg(g)}, which is closely related to the study of the structure of the automorphism group of K〈X〉. We also obtain a counterexample to another related conjecture of Makar-Limanov and Jie-Tai Yu stated in terms of Malcev–Neumann formal power series. In view of the counterexamples we formulate two open problems concerning degree estimate for commutators in view of the study of the structure of the automorphism group of K〈X〉.The counterexamples in this article are constructed by applying the description of the free algebra K〈X〉 considered as a bimodule of K[u] where u is a monomial which is not a power of another monomial and the solution the equation [um,s]=[un,r] with unknowns r,s∈K〈X〉. The newly discovered description and the solution of the equation in this article are closely related to the combinatorial and computational aspects of free associative algebras, hence have their own independent interests.

Abstract:It is well known that an equivalence relation is invariant under the basic operations of an algebra if and only if it is invariant under the unary polynomials of the algebra. We show that a higher arity version of this property holds for a higher dimensional analogue of an equivalence relation. It follows that the hypercommutator of arity $n$ for an algebra is determined by its $n$-ary polynomials. We construct examples to show that this fails for every arity of the term condition higher commutator.

An algebraic combinatorial approach to Sylvester's denumerant

Abstract:For a positive integer sequence $\boldsymbol{a}=(a_1, \dots, a_{N+1})$, Sylvester's denumerant $E(\boldsymbol{a}; t)$ counts the number of nonnegative integer solutions to $\sum_{i=1}^{N+1} a_i x_i = t$ for a nonnegative integer $t$. It has been extensively studied and a well-known result asserts that $E(\boldsymbol{a}; t)$ is a quasi-polynomial in $t$ of degree $N$. A milestone is Baldoni et al.'s polynomial algorithm in 2015 for computing the top $k$ coefficients when $k$ is fixed. Their development uses heavily lattice point counting theory in computational geometry. In this paper, we explain their work in the context of algebraic combinatorics and simplify their computation. Our work is based on constant term method, Barvinok's unimodular cone decomposition, and recent results on fast computation of generalized Todd polynomials. We develop the algorithm \texttt{CT-Knapsack}, together with an implementation in \texttt{Maple}. Our algorithm avoids plenty of repeated computations and is hence faster.

Multiple recurrence and popular differences for polynomial patterns in rings of integers

Abstract:We demonstrate that the phenomenon of popular differences (aka the phenomenon of large intersections) holds for natural families of polynomial patterns in rings of integers of number fields. If $K$ is a number field with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ and $E \subseteq \mathcal{O}_K$ has positive upper Banach density $d^*(E) = \delta > 0$, we show, inter alia: 1. If $p(x) \in K[x]$ is an intersective $\mathcal{O}_K$-valued polynomial and $r, s \in \mathcal{O}_K$ are distinct and nonzero, then for any $\varepsilon > 0$, the set of $n \in \mathcal{O}_K$ such that \[ d^* \left( \{ x \in \mathcal{O}_K : \{x, x + rp(n), x + sp(n)\} \subseteq E \} \right) > \delta^3 - \varepsilon. \] is syndetic. Moreover, if $\frac{s}{r} \in \mathbb{Q}$, then there are syndetically many $n \in \mathcal{O}_K$ such that \[ d^* \left( \{ x \in \mathcal{O}_K : \{x, x + rp(n), x + sp(n), x + (r+s)p(n)\} \subseteq E \} \right) > \delta^4 - \varepsilon. \] 2. If $\{p_1, \dots, p_k\} \subseteq K[x]$ is a jointly intersective family of linearly independent $\mathcal{O}_K$-valued polynomials, then the set of $n \in \mathcal{O}_K$ such that \[ d^* \left( \{ x \in \mathcal{O}_K : \{x, x + p_1(n), \dots, x + p_k(n)\} \subseteq E \} \right)> \delta^{k+1} - \varepsilon \] is syndetic. These two results generalize and extend previous work of Frantzikinakis and Kra on polynomial configurations in $\mathbb{Z}$ and build upon recent work of the authors and Best on linear patterns in general abelian groups. The above combinatorial results follow from multiple recurrence results in ergodic theory, which require a sharpening of existing tools for handling polynomial multiple ergodic averages. A key advancement made in this paper is a new result on the equidistribution of polynomial orbits in nilmanifolds, which can be seen as a far-reaching generalization of Weyl's equidistribution theorem.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{L}$ be a finite-dimensional semisimple Lie algebra of rank $N$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. Associated to $\mathcal{L}$ is a family of polynomial folding maps $$\textsf{F}_{n}:\mathbb{A}^N\to\mathbb{A}^N\quad\text{for}\quad n\ge1$$ having the property that $\textsf{F}_{n}$ has topological degree $n^N$ and $$\textsf{F}_{m}\circ\textsf{F}_{n}=\textsf{F}_{n}\circ\textsf{F}_{m}\quad\text{for all}\quad m,n\ge1.$$ We derive formulas for the leading terms of the folding maps on $\mathbb{A}^2$ associated to the Lie algebras $\mathcal{A}_2$, $\mathcal{B}_2$, and $\mathcal{G}_2$, and we use these formulas to compute the affine automorphism group of each folding map.

Abstract:We show that the pattern $\{x,x+y,xy\}$ is partition regular over the space of formal integer polynomials of degree at least one with zero constant term, with primitive recursive bounds. This provides a new proof for the partition regularity of $\{x,x+y,xy\}$ over $\mathbb{N}$, which gives the first primitive recursive bound.

Abstract:Studying ceratin combinatorial properties of non-unique factorizations have been a subject of recent literatures. Little is known about two combinatorial invariants, namely the catenary degree and the tame degree, even in the case of numerical monoids. In this paper we compute these invariants for a certain class of numerical monoids generated by generalized arithmetic sequences. We also show that the difference between the tame degree and the catenary degree can be arbitrary large even if the number of minimal generators is fixed.

Abstract:Alternating sign triangles have been introduced by Ayyer, Behrend and Fischer in 2016 and it was proven that there is the same number of alternating sign triangles with $n$ rows as there is of $n\times n$ alternating sign matrices. Later on Fischer gave a refined enumeration of alternating sign triangles with respect to a statistic $\rho$, having the same distribution as the unique 1 in the top row of an alternating sign matrix, by connecting alternating sign triangles to $(0,n,n)$- Magog trapezoids. We introduce two more statistics counting the all $0$-columns on the left and right in an alternating sign triangle yielding objects we call alternating sign pentagons. We then show the equinumeracy of these alternating sign pentagons with Magog pentagons of a certain shape taking into account the statistic $\rho$. Furthermore we deduce a generating function of these alternating sign pentagons with respect to the statistic $\rho$ in terms of a Pfaffian and consider the implications of our new results on some open conjectures.

Abstract:We completely classify the asymptotic behavior of the number of alternating sign matrices classically avoiding a single permutation pattern, in the sense of [Johansson and Linusson 2007]. In particular, we give a uniform proof of an exponential upper bound for the number of alternating sign matrices classically avoiding one of twelve particular patterns, and a super-exponential lower bound for all other single-pattern avoidance classes. We also show that for any fixed integer $k$, there is an exponential upper bound for the number of alternating sign matrices that classically avoid any single permutation pattern and contain precisely $k$ negative ones. Finally, we prove that there must be at most $3$ negative ones in an alternating sign matrix which classically avoids both $2143$ and $3412$, and we exactly enumerate the number of them with precisely $3$ negative ones.

Abstract:Alternating sign triangles (ASTs) have recently been introduced by Ayyer, Behrend and the author, and it was proven that there is the same number of ASTs with n rows as there is of nxn alternating sign matrices (ASMs). We prove a conjecture by Behrend on a refined enumeration of ASTs with respect to a statistic that is shown to have the same distribution as the column of the unique 1 in the top row of an ASM. The proof of the conjecture is based on a certain multivariate generating function of ASTs that takes the positions of the columns with sum 1 (1-columns) into account. We also prove a curious identity on the cyclic rotation of the 1-columns of ASTs. Furthermore, we discuss a relation of our multivariate generating function to a formula of Di Francesco and Zinn-Justin for the number of fully packed loop configurations associated with a given link pattern. The proofs of our results employ the author's operator formula for the number of monotone triangles with prescribed bottom row. This is opposed to the six-vertex model approach that was used by Ayyer, Behrend and the author to enumerate ASTs, and since the refined enumeration implies the unrefined enumeration, the present paper also provides an alternative proof of the enumeration of ASTs.

Polynomial Quotient Rings and Kronecker Substitution for Deriving Combinatorial Identities

Abstract:We introduce a framework for generating combinatorial identities by applying Kronecker substitution to polynomial expansions within quotient rings. We apply this methodology to derive a general formula for C-recursive integer sequences, as well as explicit formulas for certain combinatorial sequences, including the Pell numbers and central binomial coefficients. We also discover an unusual representation for the real $n$-th roots of positive integers $\sqrt[n]{a}$, characterized as the limit of a modular expression. The theorems and results presented provide a theoretical basis for future research on the interconnections between Kronecker substitution, polynomial ring expansions, and their applications in combinatorial sequences and beyond.

Let ω(G) be the maximal size of a subset S of G such that 〈x,y〉=G whenever x,y∈S and x≠y and let σ(G) be the minimal size of a family of proper subgroups of G whose union is G . Continued fractions for cycle-alternating permutations

Abstract:A permutation is said to be cycle-alternating if it has no cycle double rises, cycle double falls or fixed points; thus each index $i$ is either a cycle valley ($\sigma^{-1}(i)>i<\sigma(i)$) or a cycle peak ($\sigma^{-1}(i)<i>\sigma(i)$). We find Stieltjes-type continued fractions for some multivariate polynomials that enumerate cycle-alternating permutations with respect to a large (sometimes infinite) number of simultaneous statistics that measure cycle status, record status, crossings and nestings along with the parity of the indices. Our continued fractions are specializations of more general continued fractions of Sokal and Zeng. We then introduce alternating Laguerre digraphs, which are generalization of cycle-alternating permutations, and find exponential generating functions for some polynomials enumerating them. We interpret the Stieltjes--Rogers and Jacobi--Rogers matrices associated to some of our continued fractions in terms of alternating Laguerre digraphs.

A Linear Algebra approach to monomiality and operational methods

Abstract:We use linear algebraic methods to obtain general results about linear operators on a space of polynomials that we apply to the operators associated with a polynomial sequence by the monomiality property. We show that all such operators are differential operators with polynomial coefficients of finite of infinite order. We consider the monomiality operators associated with several classes of polynomial sequences, such as Appell and Sheffer, and also orthogonal polynomial sequences that include the Meixner, Krawtchouk, Laguerre, Meixner-Pollaczek, and Hermite families.
