Abstract:We show that the pattern $\{x,x+y,xy\}$ is partition regular over the space of formal integer polynomials of degree at least one with zero constant term, with primitive recursive bounds. This provides a new proof for the partition regularity of $\{x,x+y,xy\}$ over $\mathbb{N}$, which gives the first primitive recursive bound.

Abstract:Hindman's finite sums theorem states that in any finite coloring of the naturals, there is an infinite sequence all of whose finite subset sums are the same color. In 1979, Hindman showed that there is a finite coloring of the naturals so that no infinite sequence has all of its pairwise sums and pairwise products the same color. Hindman conjectured that for any $n$, a finite coloring of the naturals contains $n$ numbers all of whose subset sums and subset products are the same color. In this paper we prove the version of this statement where we color the rationals instead of the integers. In other words, we show that the pattern $\{ \sum_{i \in S}x_i, \prod_{i \in S}x_i \}$, where $S$ ranges over all nonempty subsets of $[n]$, is partition regular over the rationals.

Abstract:Hindman conjectured that any finite partition of $\mathbb{N}$ has a monochromatic $\{x,y,x+y,xy\}$. Recently, Bowen proved the result for all 2-partition. In this paper, we extend Bowen's result to any semiring $(S,+,\cdot)$ such that $Ss$ is piecewise syndetic for all $s\in S$. As a method, we gave a combinatorial proof for a piecewise syndetic version of Bergerson and Glasscock's IP$_r^*$ Szemerédi Theorem, and discussed the case when the operation is not commutative.

Abstract:We show that a finite coloring of an amenable group contains `many' monochromatic sets of the form $\{x,y,xy,yx\},$ and natural extensions with more variables. This gives the first combinatorial proof and extensions of Bergelson and McCutcheon's non-commutative Schur theorem. Our main new tool is the introduction of what we call `quasirandom colorings,' a condition that is automatically satisfied by colorings of quasirandom groups, and a reduction to this case.

Abstract:In the paper, we searh for monochromatic infinite additive structures involving polynomials on $\mathbb{N}$. Ultimately, we can prove that for any $r\in \mathbb{N}$, any distinct natural numbers $a,b$ and any $2$-coloring of $\mathbb{N}$, there exist subsets $B,C\subset \mathbb{N}$ with $|B|=r$ and $|C|=\infty$ such that there exists a color containing $B+aC$ and $B+bC$. In fact, for the specific question considered by us, we give a complete answer.

Abstract:Recently, using machinery's from Ergodic theory, Z. Lian, and R. Xiao proved if $P$ is any polynomial with no constant term, then for every finite coloring of $\mathbb{N}$, there exists two infinite subsets $B,C$ of $\mathbb{N}$ such that the set $\{P(b)+P(c):b\in B, c\in C\}$ is monochromatic. In this article we improve their result by proving that instead of taking such polynomials we can choose any function $f$ having the property that $f(\mathbb{N})\setminus \mathbb{N}$ is finite. We use ultrafilter techniques to prove our result.

Abstract:We introduce a family of univariate polynomials indexed by integer partitions. At prime powers, they count the number of subspaces in a finite vector space that transform under a regular diagonal matrix in a specified manner. This enumeration formula is a combinatorial solution to a problem introduced by Bender, Coley, Robbins and Rumsey. At $1$, they count set partitions with specified block sizes. At $0$, they count standard tableaux of specified shape. At $-1$, they count standard shifted tableaux of a specified shape. These polynomials are generated by a new statistic on set partitions (called the interlacing number) as well as a polynomial statistic on standard tableaux. They allow us to express $q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind as sums over standard tableaux and as sums over set partitions. For partitions whose parts are at most two, these polynomials are the non-zero entries of the Catalan triangle associated to the $q$-Hermite orthogonal polynomial sequence. In particular, when all parts are equal to two, they coincide with the polynomials defined by Touchard that enumerate chord diagrams by the number of crossings.

Abstract:Abstract We prove that if $$\sigma \in S_m$$ σ ∈ S m is a pattern of $$w \in S_n$$ w ∈ S n , then we can express the Schubert polynomial $$\mathfrak {S}_w$$ S w as a monomial times $$\mathfrak {S}_\sigma $$ S σ (in reindexed variables) plus a polynomial with nonnegative coefficients. This implies that the set of permutations whose Schubert polynomials have all their coefficients equal to either 0 or 1 is closed under pattern containment. Using Magyar’s orthodontia, we characterize this class by a list of twelve avoided patterns. We also give other equivalent conditions on $$\mathfrak {S}_w$$ S w being zero-one. In this case, the Schubert polynomial $$\mathfrak {S}_w$$ S w is equal to the integer point transform of a generalized permutahedron.

Abstract:We demonstrate that the phenomenon of popular differences (aka the phenomenon of large intersections) holds for natural families of polynomial patterns in rings of integers of number fields. If $K$ is a number field with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ and $E \subseteq \mathcal{O}_K$ has positive upper Banach density $d^*(E) = \delta > 0$, we show, inter alia: 1. If $p(x) \in K[x]$ is an intersective $\mathcal{O}_K$-valued polynomial and $r, s \in \mathcal{O}_K$ are distinct and nonzero, then for any $\varepsilon > 0$, the set of $n \in \mathcal{O}_K$ such that \[ d^* \left( \{ x \in \mathcal{O}_K : \{x, x + rp(n), x + sp(n)\} \subseteq E \} \right) > \delta^3 - \varepsilon. \] is syndetic. Moreover, if $\frac{s}{r} \in \mathbb{Q}$, then there are syndetically many $n \in \mathcal{O}_K$ such that \[ d^* \left( \{ x \in \mathcal{O}_K : \{x, x + rp(n), x + sp(n), x + (r+s)p(n)\} \subseteq E \} \right) > \delta^4 - \varepsilon. \] 2. If $\{p_1, \dots, p_k\} \subseteq K[x]$ is a jointly intersective family of linearly independent $\mathcal{O}_K$-valued polynomials, then the set of $n \in \mathcal{O}_K$ such that \[ d^* \left( \{ x \in \mathcal{O}_K : \{x, x + p_1(n), \dots, x + p_k(n)\} \subseteq E \} \right)> \delta^{k+1} - \varepsilon \] is syndetic. These two results generalize and extend previous work of Frantzikinakis and Kra on polynomial configurations in $\mathbb{Z}$ and build upon recent work of the authors and Best on linear patterns in general abelian groups. The above combinatorial results follow from multiple recurrence results in ergodic theory, which require a sharpening of existing tools for handling polynomial multiple ergodic averages. A key advancement made in this paper is a new result on the equidistribution of polynomial orbits in nilmanifolds, which can be seen as a far-reaching generalization of Weyl's equidistribution theorem.

Revisiting sums and products in countable and finite fields

Abstract:We establish a polynomial ergodic theorem for actions of the affine group of a countable field $K$. As an application, we deduce--via a variant of Furstenberg's correspondence principle--that for fields of characteristic zero, any "large" set $E\subset K$ contains "many" patterns of the form $\{p(x)+y,xy\}$, for every non-constant polynomial $p(x)\in K[x]$. Our methods are flexible enough that they allow us to recover analogous density results in the setting of finite fields and, with the aid of a new finitistic variant of Bergelson's "colouring trick", show that for $r\in \mathbb{N}$ fixed, any $r-$colouring of a large enough finite field will contain monochromatic patterns of the form $\{x,p(x)+y,xy\}$. In a different direction, we obtain a double ergodic theorem for actions of the affine group of a countable field. An adaptation of the argument for affine actions of finite fields leads to a generalisation of a theorem of Shkredov. Finally, to highlight the utility of the aforementioned finitistic "colouring trick", we provide a conditional, elementary generalisation of Green and Sanders' $\{x,y,x+y,xy\}$ theorem.

Partitions and elementary symmetric polynomials -- an experimental approach

Abstract:Given a partition $\lambda$, we write $e_j(\lambda)$ for the $j^{\textrm{th}}$ elementary symmetric polynomial $e_j$ evaluated at the parts of $\lambda$ and $e_jp_A(n)$ for the sum of $e_j(\lambda)$ as $\lambda$ ranges over the set of partitions of $n$ with parts in $A$. For $e_jp_A(n)$, we prove analogs of the classical formula for the partition function, $p(n)=1/n \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}\sigma_1(n-k)p(k)$, where $\sigma_1$ is the sum of divisors function. We prove several congruences for $e_2p_4(n)$, the sum of $e_2$ over the set of partitions of $n$ into four parts. Define the function $\textrm{pre}_j(\lambda)$ to be the multiset of monomials in $e_j(\lambda)$, which is itself a partition. If $\mathcal A$ is a set of partitions, we define $\textrm{pre}_j(\mathcal A)$ to be the set of partitions $\textrm{pre}_j(\lambda)$ as $\lambda$ ranges over $\mathcal A$. If $\mathcal P(n)$ is the set of all partitions of $n$, we conjecture that the number of odd partitions in $\textrm{pre}_2(\mathcal P(n))$ is at least the number of distinct partitions. We prove some results about $\textrm{pre}_2(\mathcal B(n))$, where $\mathcal B(n)$ is the set of binary partitions of $n$. We conclude with conjectures on the log-concavity of functions related to $e_jp(n)$, the sum of $e_j(\lambda)$ for all $\lambda\in \mathcal P(n)$.

Partition regularity of Pythagorean pairs

Abstract:We address a core partition regularity problem in Ramsey theory by proving that every finite coloring of the positive integers contains monochromatic Pythagorean pairs, i.e., $x,y\in \mathbb{N}$ such that $x^2\pm y^2=z^2$ for some $z\in \mathbb{N}$. We also show that partitions generated by level sets of multiplicative functions taking finitely many values always contain Pythagorean triples. Our proofs combine known Gowers uniformity properties of aperiodic multiplicative functions with a novel and rather flexible approach based on concentration estimates of multiplicative functions.

The Schur polynomials in all primitive $n$th roots of unity

Abstract:We show that the Schur polynomials in all primitive $n$th roots of unity are $1$, $0$, or $-1$, if $n$ has at most two distinct odd prime factors. This result can be regarded as a generalization of properties of the coefficients of the cyclotomic polynomial and its multiplicative inverse. The key to the proof is the notion of a unimodular system of vectors. Namely, this result is reduced in turn to four propositions on the unimodularity of vector systems, and the last proposition is proved by using graph theory.

In 2006, Treneer discovered an explicit infinite family of congruences of overpartitions modulo $5$. In our research, we have identified explicit infinite families of congruences of overpartitions modulo $3,7,11$. This work reveals the connection between overpartitions and half-integral modular forms.

Abstract:We begin by considering a sequence of polynomials in three variables whose coefficients count restricted binary overpartitions with certain properties. We then concentrate on two specific subsequences that are closely related to the Chebyshev polynomials of both kinds, deriving combinatorial and algebraic properties of some special cases. We show that the zeros of these polynomial sequences lie on certain algebraic curves, some of which we study in greater detail. Finally, we extend part of this work to restricted $b$-ary overpartitions for arbitrary integers $b\geq 2$.

Partition regularity of system of nonlinear equations

Abstract:In $1979$, using the theory of ultrafilters, N. Hindman proved that for every finite coloring of $\mathbb{N}$, there exists a color that contains both additive and multiplicative $IP$ sets. Later, in $1993$, V. Bergelson and N. Hindman found an elementary proof. In this article, we prove that the partial product of these two $IP$ sets also lies in the same color. As an immediate consequence, we have the equation $a+b=c\cdot d$ partition regular. This was a conjecture of P. Csikvári, K. Gyarmati, and A. Sárközy, which was solved by V. Bergelson and N. Hindman independently. In this article, we separately give a very short proof of this conjecture. Then we extend our techniques to deduce systems of nonlinear equations that are partition regular. We prove that a relatively weak version of the nonlinear Rado systems is partition regular.
