Abstract:Hindman's finite sums theorem states that in any finite coloring of the naturals, there is an infinite sequence all of whose finite subset sums are the same color. In 1979, Hindman showed that there is a finite coloring of the naturals so that no infinite sequence has all of its pairwise sums and pairwise products the same color. Hindman conjectured that for any $n$, a finite coloring of the naturals contains $n$ numbers all of whose subset sums and subset products are the same color. In this paper we prove the version of this statement where we color the rationals instead of the integers. In other words, we show that the pattern $\{ \sum_{i \in S}x_i, \prod_{i \in S}x_i \}$, where $S$ ranges over all nonempty subsets of $[n]$, is partition regular over the rationals.

Abstract:We show that a finite coloring of an amenable group contains `many' monochromatic sets of the form $\{x,y,xy,yx\},$ and natural extensions with more variables. This gives the first combinatorial proof and extensions of Bergelson and McCutcheon's non-commutative Schur theorem. Our main new tool is the introduction of what we call `quasirandom colorings,' a condition that is automatically satisfied by colorings of quasirandom groups, and a reduction to this case.

Abstract:In the paper, we searh for monochromatic infinite additive structures involving polynomials on $\mathbb{N}$. Ultimately, we can prove that for any $r\in \mathbb{N}$, any distinct natural numbers $a,b$ and any $2$-coloring of $\mathbb{N}$, there exist subsets $B,C\subset \mathbb{N}$ with $|B|=r$ and $|C|=\infty$ such that there exists a color containing $B+aC$ and $B+bC$. In fact, for the specific question considered by us, we give a complete answer.

On the number of monochromatic solutions to multiplicative equations

Abstract:The following question was asked by Prendiville: given an $r$-colouring of the interval $\{2, \dotsc, N\}$, what is the minimum number of monochromatic solutions of the equation $xy = z$? For $r=2$, we show that there are always asymptotically at least $(1/2\sqrt{2}) N^{1/2} \log N$ monochromatic solutions, and that the leading constant is sharp. For $r=3$ and $r=4$ we obtain tight results up to a multiplicative logarithmic factor. We also provide bounds for more colours and other multiplicative equations.

Abstract:We show that the pattern $\{x,x+y,xy\}$ is partition regular over the space of formal integer polynomials of degree at least one with zero constant term, with primitive recursive bounds. This provides a new proof for the partition regularity of $\{x,x+y,xy\}$ over $\mathbb{N}$, which gives the first primitive recursive bound.

Abstract:Fernández-Bretón, Sarmiento and Vera showed that whenever a direct sum of sufficiently many copies of ${\mathbb Z}_4$, the cyclic group of order 4, is countably coloured there are arbitrarily large finite sets $X$ whose sumsets $X+X$ are monochromatic. They asked if the elements of order 4 are necessary, in the following strong sense: if $G$ is an abelian group having no elements of order 4, is it always the case there there is a countable colouring of $G$ for which there is not even a monochromatic sumset $X+X$ with $X$ of size 2? Our aim in this short note is to show that this is indeed the case.

Abstract:The paper gives some multi-dimensional extensions of Hindman's finite sum theorem. In particular, by the method of this paper, we prove that for any finite coloring of $\mathbb N$, there are $a,b\in \mathbb N$ such that there exist (infinitely many) pairs $(x,y),(u,v)\in \mathbb N^2$ such that the two sets $\{ax,ay,xy,a(x+y)\}$ and $\{u+b,v+b,uv+b,u+v\}$ are monochromatic.

Abstract:The $r$-colour Ramsey number $R_r(k)$ is the minimum $n \in \mathbb{N}$ such that every $r$-colouring of the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ on $n$ vertices contains a monochromatic copy of $K_k$. We prove, for each fixed $r \geqslant 2$, that $$R_r(k) \leqslant e^{-\delta k} r^{rk}$$ for some constant $\delta = \delta(r) > 0$ and all sufficiently large $k \in \mathbb{N}$. For each $r \geqslant 3$, this is the first exponential improvement over the upper bound of Erdős and Szekeres from 1935. In the case $r = 2$, it gives a different (and significantly shorter) proof of a recent result of Campos, Griffiths, Morris and Sahasrabudhe.

Abstract:Recently, using machinery's from Ergodic theory, Z. Lian, and R. Xiao proved if $P$ is any polynomial with no constant term, then for every finite coloring of $\mathbb{N}$, there exists two infinite subsets $B,C$ of $\mathbb{N}$ such that the set $\{P(b)+P(c):b\in B, c\in C\}$ is monochromatic. In this article we improve their result by proving that instead of taking such polynomials we can choose any function $f$ having the property that $f(\mathbb{N})\setminus \mathbb{N}$ is finite. We use ultrafilter techniques to prove our result.

Abstract:We prove a known 2-coloring of the integers [ N ] ≔ { 1 , 2 , 3 , ... , N } [N] ≔\{1,2,3,\dots ,N\} minimizes the number of monochromatic arithmetic 3-progressions under certain restrictions. A monochromatic arithmetic progression is a set of equally-spaced integers that are all the same color. Previous work by Parrilo, Robertson and Saracino conjectured an optimal coloring for large N N that involves 12 12 colored blocks. Here, we prove that the conjectured coloring minimizes monochromatic arithmetic 3 3 -progressions among anti-symmetric colorings with 12 12 or fewer colored blocks. We leverage a connection to the coloring of the continuous interval [ 0 , 1 ] [0,1] used by Parrilo, Robertson, and Saracino as well as by Butler, Costello and Graham. Our proof identifies classes of colorings with permutations, then counts the permutations using mixed integer linear programming.

Abstract:Hindman conjectured that any finite partition of $\mathbb{N}$ has a monochromatic $\{x,y,x+y,xy\}$. Recently, Bowen proved the result for all 2-partition. In this paper, we extend Bowen's result to any semiring $(S,+,\cdot)$ such that $Ss$ is piecewise syndetic for all $s\in S$. As a method, we gave a combinatorial proof for a piecewise syndetic version of Bergerson and Glasscock's IP$_r^*$ Szemerédi Theorem, and discussed the case when the operation is not commutative.

Abstract:We give a very short proof of the following result of Graham from 1980: For any finite coloring of Rd, d≥2, and for any α>0, there is a monochromatic (d+1)-tuple that spans a simplex of volume α. Our proof also yields new estimates on the number A=A(r) defined as the minimum positive value A such that, in any r-coloring of the grid points Z2 of the plane, there is a monochromatic triangle of area exactly A.

Abstract:An exact r-coloring of a set $S$ is a surjective function $c:S \rightarrow \{1, 2, \ldots,r\}$. A rainbow solution to an equation over $S$ is a solution such that all components are a different color. We prove that every 3-coloring of $\mathbb{N}$ with an upper density greater than $(4^s-1)/(3 \cdot 4^s)$ contains a rainbow solution to $x-y=z^k$. The rainbow number for an equation in the set $S$ is the smallest integer $r$ such that every exact $r$-coloring has a rainbow solution. We compute the rainbow numbers of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ for the equation $x-y=z^k$, where $p$ is prime and $k\geq 2$.

On monochromatic solutions to linear equations over the integers

Abstract:We study the number of monochromatic solutions to linear equations in a $2$-coloring of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$. We show that any nontrivial linear equation has a constant fraction of solutions that are monochromatic in any $2$-coloring of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$. We further study commonness of four-term equations and disprove a conjecture of Costello and Elvin by showing that, unlike over $\mathbb{F}_p$, the four-term equation $x_1 + 2x_2 - x_3 - 2x_4 = 0$ is uncommon over $\{1,\ldots,n\}$.

Abstract:For positive integers n, r, s with r > s, the set-coloring Ramsey number R(n; r, s) is the minimum N such that if every edge of the complete graph K N receives a set of s colors from a palette of r colors, then there is guaranteed to be a monochromatic clique on n vertices, that is, a subset of n vertices where all of the edges between them receive a common color. In particular, the case s = 1 corresponds to the classical multicolor Ramsey number. We prove general upper and lower bounds on R(n; r, s) which imply that R(n; r, s) = 2 Θ(nr) if s/r is bounded away from 0 and 1. The upper bound extends an old result of Erdős and Szemerédi, who treated the case s = r − 1, while the lower bound exploits a connection to error-correcting codes. We also study the analogous problem for hypergraphs.

Abstract:In 1995, Erdős and Gyárfás proved that in every $2$-edge-coloured complete graph on $n$ vertices, there exists a collection of $2\sqrt{n}$ monochromatic paths, all of the same colour, which cover the entire vertex set. They conjectured that it is possible to replace $2\sqrt{n}$ by $\sqrt{n}$. We prove this to be true for all sufficiently large $n$.

Abstract:The monotone path $P_{n+2}$ is an ordered 3-uniform hypergraph whose vertex set has size $n+2$ and edge set consists of all consecutive triples. In this note, we consider the collection $\mathcal{J}_n$ of ordered 3-uniform hypergraphs named monotone paths with $n$ jumps, and we prove the following relation \begin{equation*} r(3;n) \leq R(P_{n+2},\mathcal{J}_n) \leq 4^n \cdot r(3;n), \end{equation*} where $r(3;n)$ is the multicolor Ramsey number for triangles and $R(P_{n+2},\mathcal{J}_n)$ is the hypergraph Ramsey number for $P_{n+2}$ versus any member of $\mathcal{J}_n$. In particular, whether $r(3;n)$ is exponential, which is a very old problem of Erdős, is equivalent to whether $R(P_{n+2},\mathcal{J}_n)$ is exponential.

Abstract:A classical problem, due to Gerencsér and Gyárfás from 1967, asks how large a monochromatic connected component can we guarantee in any $r$-edge colouring of $K_n$? We consider how big a connected component can we guarantee in any $r$-edge colouring of $K_n$ if we allow ourselves to use up to $s$ colours. This is actually an instance of a more general question of Bollobás from about 20 years ago which asks for a $k$-connected subgraph in the same setting. We complete the picture in terms of the approximate behaviour of the answer by determining it up to a logarithmic term, provided $n$ is large enough. We obtain more precise results for certain regimes which solve a problem of Liu, Morris and Prince from 2007, as well as disprove a conjecture they pose in a strong form. We also consider a generalisation in a similar direction of a question first considered by Erdős and Rényi in 1956, who considered given $n$ and $m$, what is the smallest number of $m$-cliques which can cover all edges of $K_n$? This problem is essentially equivalent to the question of what is the minimum number of vertices that are certain to be incident to at least one edge of some colour in any $r$-edge colouring of $K_n$. We consider what happens if we allow ourselves to use up to $s$ colours. We obtain a more complete understanding of the answer to this question for large $n$, in particular determining it up to a constant factor for all $1\le s \le r$, as well as obtaining much more precise results for various ranges including the correct asymptotics for essentially the whole range.
