Abstract:We determine the Hilbert series of some classes of ideals generated by generic forms of degree two and three, and investigate the difference to the Hilbert series of ideals generated by powers of linear generic forms of the corresponding degrees.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is the fine structure of the ideals in the title, with emphasis on the properties of the associated Rees algebra and the special fiber. The watershed between the present approach and some of the previous work in the literature is that here one does not assume that the ideals in question satisfy the common generic properties. One exception is a recent work of N. P. H. Lan which inspired the present work. Here we recover and extend his work. We strongly focus on the behavior of the ideals of minors of the corresponding so-called Hilbert--Burch matrix and on conjugation features of the latter. We apply the results to three important models: linearly presented ideals of plane fat points, reciprocal ideals of hyperplane arrangements and linearly presented monomial ideals.

Abstract:Let I be either the ideal of maximal minors or the ideal of 2-minors of a row graded or column graded matrix of linear forms L. In two previous papers we showed that I is a Cartwright-Sturmfels ideal, that is, the multigraded generic initial ideal gin(I) of I is radical (and essentially independent of the term order chosen). In this paper we describe generators and prime decomposition of gin(I) in terms of data related to the linear dependences among the row or columns of the submatrices of L. In the case of 2-minors we also give a closed formula for its multigraded Hilbert series.

Abstract:We consider the polynomial ring in finitely many variables over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, and initiate the systematic study of ideals preserved by the action of the general linear group by changes of coordinates. We show that these ideals are classified by sets of carry patterns, which are finite sequences of integers introduced by Doty in the study of representation theory of the polynomial ring. We provide an algorithm to decompose an invariant ideal as a sum of carry ideals with no redundancies. Next, we study the conditions under which one carry ideal is contained in another, and completely characterize the image of the multiplication map between the space of linear forms and a subrepresentation of forms of degree d. Finally, we begin an investigation into free resolutions of these ideals. Our results are most explicit in the case of carry ideals in two variables, where we completely describe the monomial generators and syzygies using base-p expansions of the parameters involved, and we provide a formula for the structure of the Tor modules in the Grothendieck group of representations.

Abstract:In this paper we study the Freiman inequality for the minimal number of generators of the square of an equigenerated monomial ideal. Such an ideal is called a Freiman ideal if equality holds in the Freiman inequality. We classify all Freiman ideals of maximal height, the Freiman ideals of certain classes of principal Borel ideals, the Hibi ideals which are Freiman, and classes of Veronese type ideals which are Freiman.

Abstract:We compute the finite generation ideal for Daigle and Freudenburg's counterexample to Hilbert's fourteenth problem. This ideal helps to understand how far the ring of invariants is from being finitely generated. Our calculations show that the finite generation ideal is the radical of an ideal generated by three infinite families of invariants. We show that these three families together with an additional invariant form a SAGBI-basis of the ring of invariants. We use the properties of our SAGBI-basis in our computation of the finite generation ideal.

Linking numbers and non-holomorphic Siegel modular forms

Abstract:We study generating series encoding linking numbers between geodesics in arithmetic hyperbolic $3$-folds. We show that the series converge to functions on the genus $2$ Siegel upper-half plane and that certain explicit modifications have the transformation properties of genus $2$ Siegel modular forms of weight $2$. This is done by carefully analysing the integral of the Kudla-Millson theta series over a surface with geodesic boundary.

Abstract:We study several properties of multihomogeneous prime ideals. We show that the multigraded generic initial ideal of a prime has very special properties, for instance, its radical is Cohen-Macaulay. We develop a comprehensive study of multidegrees in arbitrary positive multigraded settings. In these environments, we extend the notion of Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals by means of a standardization technique. Furthermore, we recover or extend important results in the literature, for instance: we provide a multidegree version of Hartshorne's result stating the upper semicontinuity of arithmetic degree under flat degenerations, and we give an alternative proof of Brion's result regarding multiplicity-free varieties.

Abstract:We introduce the good Hilbert functor and prove that it is algebraic. This functor generalizes various versions of the Hilbert moduli problem, such as the multigraded Hilbert scheme and the invariant Hilbert scheme. Moreover, we generalize a result concerning formal GAGA for good moduli spaces.

Abstract:For a discrete valuation ring $R$ with quotient field $K$ and residue field $F$ both of characteristic not 2, we study low-dimensional quadratic forms with Witt class in the $n$-th power of the fundamental ideal of $F$ resp. $K$ and point out connections between forms over these fields. We analyse the minimal number of Pfister forms such that a given form is Witt equivalent to the sum of these and study forms congruent modulo a higher power of the fundamental ideal towards similarity.

Abstract:We find explicit formulas for the Hilbert series of residual intersections of a scheme in terms of the Hilbert series of its conormal modules. In a previous paper we proved that such formulas should exist. We give applications to the dimension of secant varieties of surfaces and three-folds.

Abstract:Inspired by the notion of König graphs we introduce graded ideals of König type with respect to a monomial order $<$. It is shown that if $I$ is of König type, then the Cohen--Macaulay property of $\ini_<(I)$ does not depend on the characteristic of the base field. This happens to be the case also for $I$ itself when $I$ is a binomial edge ideal. Attached to an ideal of König type is a sequence of linear forms, whose elements are variables or differences of variables. This sequence is a system of parameters for $\ini_<(I)$, and is a potential system of parameters for $I$ itself. We study in detail the ideals of König type among the edge ideals, binomial edge ideals and the toric ideal of a Hibi ring and use the König property to determine explicitly their canonical module.

Abstract:Using a description of the cohomology of local systems on the moduli space of abelian surfaces with a full level two structure, together with a computation of Euler characteristics we find the isotypical decomposition, under the symmetric group on 6 letters, of spaces of vector-valued Siegel modular forms of degree two and level two.

Free resolutions constructed from bigradings on Lie algebras

Abstract:We construct two families of free resolutions that resolve the ideals of certain opposite Schubert varieties restricted to the big open cell. We conjecture that these examples have genericity properties translating to structure theorems for perfect ideals with given Betti numbers, extending the well-known theorem of Buchsbaum and Eisenbud on Gorenstein ideals of codimension three.

Abstract:The aim of this short note is to prove the formula of the Hilbert series of the preprojective algebras in arbitrary characteristic by making effective use of the formulas of the Hilbert series of differential graded (dg) algebras with Adams grading. We also compute the Hilbert series of the quiver Heisenberg algebras, a special class of central extensions of preprojective algebras.

When has linear entries, the algebraic structure of the Rees algebra is well-understood under the additional assumption that the minimal number of generators of I is bounded locally up to codimension . In the first part of this article, we determine the defining ideal of under the weaker assumption that such condition holds only up to codimension , generalizing previous work of P. H. L. Nguyen. In the second part, we use generic Bourbaki ideals to extend our findings to Rees algebras of linearly presented modules of projective dimension one.

Abstract:A chopped ideal is obtained from a homogeneous ideal by considering only the generators of a fixed degree. We investigate cases in which the chopped ideal defines the same finite set of points as the original one-dimensional ideal. The complexity of computing these points from the chopped ideal is governed by the Hilbert function and regularity. We conjecture values for these invariants and prove them in many cases. We show that our conjecture is of practical relevance for symmetric tensor decomposition.

Hilbert series of representations of categories of $G$-sets

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group. A contravariant functor from the category of finite free $G$-sets to vector spaces has an associated Hilbert series, which records the underlying sequence of $G^n$ representations, $n \in \mathbb N$. We prove that this Hilbert series is rational with denominator given by linear polynomials with coefficients in the field generated by the character table of $G$.

Abstract:Let be the ring of polynomial-valued holomorphic differential forms on complex n-space, referred to in physics as the superspace ring of rank n. The symmetric group acts diagonally on by permuting commuting and anticommuting generators simultaneously. We let be the ideal generated by -invariants with vanishing constant term and study the quotient of superspace by this ideal. We calculate the doubly-graded Hilbert series of and prove an 'operator theorem', which characterizes the harmonic space attached to in terms of the Vandermonde determinant and certain differential operators. Our methods employ commutative algebra results that were used in the study of Hessenberg varieties. Our results prove conjectures of N. Bergeron, Colmenarejo, Li, Machacek, Sulzgruber, Swanson, Wallach and Zabrocki.

Abstract:Gauss and Dedekind have shown a bijection between the set of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-equivalence classes of primitive positive definite binary quadratic $\mathbb{Z}$-forms of the discriminant of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{\Delta<0})$ and the class group of its ring of integers. Using étale cohomology we show an analogue of this correspondence in the positive characteristic. This leads to the description of the set of genera and to another result analogous to Gauss' one by which any form composed with itself belongs to the principal genus.
