Abstract:A graph G = (V, E) is a k-critical graph if G is not (k - 1)-colorable but every proper subgraph of G is (k - 1)-colorable. In this article, we construct a family of 4-critical planar graphs with n vertices and 7n-13/3 edges. As a consequence, this improves the bound for the maximum edge density attained by Abbott and Zhou. We conjecture that this is the largest edge density for a 4-critical planar graph. Abstract:In this paper, by developing several new adjacency lemmas about a path on $4$ or $5$ vertices, we show that the average degree of 7-critical graphs is at least 6. It implies Vizing's planar graph conjecture for planar graphs with maximum degree $7$ and its extension to graphs embeddable in a surface with nonnegative Euler characteristic due to Sanders and Zhao (J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 83 (2001) 201-212 and J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 87 (2003) 254-263) and Zhang (Graphs and Combinatorics 16 (2000) 467-495).

The Number of Edges in Maximal 2-planar Graphs

Abstract:A graph is $2$-planar if it has local crossing number two, that is, it can be drawn in the plane such that every edge has at most two crossings. A graph is maximal $2$-planar if no edge can be added such that the resulting graph remains $2$-planar. A $2$-planar graph on $n$ vertices has at most $5n-10$ edges, and some (maximal) $2$-planar graphs -- referred to as optimal $2$-planar -- achieve this bound. However, in strong contrast to maximal planar graphs, a maximal $2$-planar graph may have fewer than the maximum possible number of edges. In this paper, we determine the minimum edge density of maximal $2$-planar graphs by proving that every maximal $2$-planar graph on $n\ge 5$ vertices has at least $2n$ edges. We also show that this bound is tight, up to an additive constant. The lower bound is based on an analysis of the degree distribution in specific classes of drawings of the graph. The upper bound construction is verified by carefully exploring the space of admissible drawings using computer support.

Toward Grünbaum's Conjecture

Abstract:Given a spanning tree $T$ of a planar graph $G$, the co-tree of $T$ is the spanning tree of the dual graph $G^*$ with edge set $(E(G)-E(T))^*$. Grünbaum conjectured in 1970 that every planar 3-connected graph $G$ contains a spanning tree $T$ such that both $T$ and its co-tree have maximum degree at most 3. While Grünbaum's conjecture remains open, Biedl proved that there is a spanning tree $T$ such that $T$ and its co-tree have maximum degree at most 5. By using new structural insights into Schnyder woods, we prove that there is a spanning tree $T$ such that $T$ and its co-tree have maximum degree at most 4.

Abstract:Thomassen (J. Combin. Theory Ser B 128:192–218, 2018) showed that every subcubic planar graph has 2-distance chromatic number at most 7, which was originally conjectured by Wegner (graphs with given diameter and a coloring problem, University of Dortmund, preprint, 1977). In this note, we consider 3-distance colorings of this family of graphs, and prove that every subcubic planar graph has 3-distance chromatic number at most 17, and we conjecture that this number can be reduced to 12. In addition, we show that every planar graph with maximum degree at most has 3-distance chromatic number at most .

Density of $3$-critical signed graphs

Abstract:We say that a signed graph is $k$-critical if it is not $k$-colorable but every one of its proper subgraphs is $k$-colorable. Using the definition of colorability due to Naserasr, Wang, and Zhu that extends the notion of circular colorability, we prove that every $3$-critical signed graph on $n$ vertices has at least $\frac{3n-1}{2}$ edges, and that this bound is asymptotically tight. It follows that every signed planar or projective-planar graph of girth at least $6$ is (circular) $3$-colorable, and for the projective-planar case, this girth condition is best possible. To prove our main result, we reformulate it in terms of the existence of a homomorphism to the signed graph $C_{3}^*$, which is the positive triangle augmented with a negative loop on each vertex.

Abstract:We call a proper edge coloring of a graph $G$ a B-coloring if every 4-cycle of $G$ is colored with four different colors. Let $q_B(G)$ denote the smallest number of colors needed for a B-coloring of $G$. Motivated by earlier papers on B-colorings, here we consider $q_B(G)$ for planar and outerplanar graphs in terms of the maximum degree $\Delta = \Delta(G)$. We prove that $q_B(G)\le 2\Delta+8$ for planar graphs, $q_B(G)\le 2\Delta$ for bipartite planar graphs and $q_B(G)\le \Delta+1$ for outerplanar graphs with $\Delta \ge 4$. We conjecture that, for $\Delta$ sufficiently large, $q_B(G)\le 2\Delta(G)$ for planar $G$ and $q_B(G)\le \Delta(G)$ for outerplanar $G$.

Abstract:A graph $G$ is \emph{uniquely k-colorable} if the chromatic number of $G$ is $k$ and $G$ has only one $k$-coloring up to permutation of the colors. A uniquely $k$-colorable graph $G$ is edge-critical if $G-e$ is not a uniquely $k$-colorable graph for any edge $e\in E(G)$. Mel'nikov and Steinberg [L. S. Mel'nikov, R. Steinberg, One counterexample for two conjectures on three coloring, Discrete Math. 20 (1977) 203-206] asked to find an exact upper bound for the number of edges in a edge-critical 3-colorable planar graph with $n$ vertices. In this paper, we give some properties of edge-critical uniquely 3-colorable planar graphs and prove that if $G$ is such a graph with $n(\geq6)$ vertices, then $|E(G)|\leq \frac{5}{2}n-6 $, which improves the upper bound $\frac{8}{3}n-\frac{17}{3}$ given by Matsumoto [N. Matsumoto, The size of edge-critical uniquely 3-colorable planar graphs, Electron. J. Combin. 20 (3) (2013) $\#$P49]. Furthermore, we find some edge-critical 3-colorable planar graphs which have $n(=10,12, 14)$ vertices and $\frac{5}{2}n-7$ edges.

Abstract:A connected graph G is 3-flow-critical if G does not have a nowhere-zero 3-flow, but every proper contraction of G does. We prove that every n-vertex 3-flow-critical graph other than K_2 and K_4 has at least 5n/3 edges. This bound is tight up to lower-order terms, answering a question of Li et al. (2022). It also generalizes the result of Koester (1991) on the maximum average degree of 4-critical planar graphs.

Abstract:The edge-length ratio of a straight-line drawing of a graph is the ratio between the lengths of the longest and of the shortest edge in the drawing. The planar edge-length ratio of a planar graph is the minimum edge-length ratio of any planar straight-line drawing of the graph. In this paper, we study the planar edge-length ratio of planar graphs. We prove that there exist $n$-vertex planar graphs whose planar edge-length ratio is in $\Omega(n)$; this bound is tight. We also prove upper bounds on the planar edge-length ratio of several families of planar graphs, including series-parallel graphs and bipartite planar graphs.

Abstract:We consider three extremal problems about the number of copies of a fixed graph in another larger graph. First, we correct an error in a result of Reiher and Wagner and prove that the number of $k$-edge stars in a graph with density $x \in [0, 1]$ is asymptotically maximized by a clique and isolated vertices or its complement. Next, among ordered $n$-vertex graphs with $m$ edges, we determine the maximum and minimum number of copies of a $k$-edge star whose nonleaf vertex is minimum among all vertices of the star. Finally, for $s \ge 2$, we define a particular $3$-edge-colored complete graph $F$ on $2s$ vertices with colors blue, green and red, and determine, for each $(x_b, x_g)$ with $x_b+x_g\le 1$ and $x_b, x_g \ge 0$, the maximum density of $F$ in a large graph whose blue, green and red edge sets have densities $x_b, x_g$ and $1-x_b-x_g$, respectively. These are the first nontrivial examples of colored graphs for which such complete results are proved.

Improving the Crossing Lemma by Characterizing Dense 2-Planar and 3-Planar Graphs

Abstract:The classical Crossing Lemma by Ajtai et al.~and Leighton from 1982 gave an important lower bound of $c \frac{m^3}{n^2}$ for the number of crossings in any drawing of a given graph of $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. The original value was $c= 1/100$, which then has gradually been improved. Here, the bounds for the density of $k$-planar graphs played a central role. Our new insight is that for $k=2,3$ the $k$-planar graphs have substantially fewer edges if specific local configurations that occur in drawings of $k$-planar graphs of maximum density are forbidden. Therefore, we are able to derive better bounds for the crossing number $\text{cr}(G)$ of a given graph $G$. In particular, we achieve a bound of $\text{cr}(G) \ge \frac{37}{9}m-\frac{155}{9}(n-2)$ for the range of $5n < m \le 6n$, while our second bound $\text{cr}(G) \ge 5m - \frac{203}{9}(n-2)$ is even stronger for larger $m>6n$. For $m > 6.77n$, we finally apply the standard probabilistic proof from the BOOK and obtain an improved constant of $c>1/27.48$ in the Crossing Lemma. Note that the previous constant was $1/29$. Although this improvement is not too impressive, we consider our technique as an important new tool, which might be helpful in various other applications.

Improved Outerplanarity Bounds for Planar Graphs

Abstract:In this paper, we study the outerplanarity of planar graphs, i.e., the number of times that we must (in a planar embedding that we can initially freely choose) remove the outerface vertices until the graph is empty. It is well-known that there are $n$-vertex graphs with outerplanarity $\tfrac{n}{6}+\Theta(1)$, and not difficult to show that the outerplanarity can never be bigger. We give here improved bounds of the form $\tfrac{n}{2g}+2g+O(1)$, where $g$ is the fence-girth, i.e., the length of the shortest cycle with vertices on both sides. This parameter $g$ is at least the connectivity of the graph, and often bigger; for example, our results imply that planar bipartite graphs have outerplanarity $\tfrac{n}{8}+O(1)$. We also show that the outerplanarity of a planar graph $G$ is at most $\tfrac{1}{2}$diam$(G)+O(\sqrt{n})$, where diam$(G)$ is the diameter of the graph. All our bounds are tight up to smaller-order terms, and a planar embedding that achieves the outerplanarity bound can be found in linear time.

Spectral Extremal Graphs of Planar Graphs with Fixed Size

Abstract:Tait and Tobin [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 126 (2017) 137--161] determined the unique spectral extremal graph over all outerplanar graphs and the unique spectral extremal graph over all planar graphs when the number of vertices is sufficiently large. In this paper we consider the spectral extremal problems of outerplanar graphs and planar graphs with fixed number of edges. We prove that the outerplanar graph on $m \geq 64$ edges with the maximum spectral radius is $S_m$, where $S_m$ is a star with $m$ edges. For planar graphs with $m$ edges, our main result shows that the spectral extremal graph is $K_2 \vee \frac{m-1}{2} K_1$ when $m$ is odd and sufficiently large, and $K_1 \vee (S_{\frac{m-2}{2}} \cup K_1)$ when $m$ is even and sufficiently large. Additionally, we obtain spectral extremal graphs for path, cycle and matching in outerplanar graphs and spectral extremal graphs for path, cycle and complete graph on $4$ vertices in planar graphs.

On the $Δ$-edge stability number of graphs

Abstract:The $\Delta$-edge stability number ${\rm es}_{\Delta}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of edges of $G$ whose removal results in a subgraph $H$ with $\Delta(H) = \Delta(G)-1$. Sets whose removal results in a subgraph with smaller maximum degree are called mitigating sets. It is proved that there always exists a mitigating set which induces a disjoint union of paths of order $2$ or $3$. Minimum mitigating sets which induce matchings are characterized. It is proved that to obtain an upper bound of the form ${\rm es}_{\Delta}(G) \leq c |V(G)|$ for an arbitrary graph $G$ of given maximum degree $\Delta$, where $c$ is a given constant, it suffices to prove the bound for $\Delta$-regular graphs. Sharp upper bounds of this form are derived for regular graphs. It is proved that if $\Delta(G) \geq\frac{|V(G)|-2}{3}$ or the induced subgraph on maximum degree vertices has a $\Delta(G)$-edge coloring, then ${\rm es}_{\Delta}(G) \le |V(G)|/2$.

Abstract:A set of edges $X\subseteq E(G)$ of a graph $G$ is an edge general position set if no three edges from $X$ lie on a common shortest path. The edge general position number ${\rm gp}_{\rm e}(G)$ of $G$ is the cardinality of a largest edge general position set in $G$. Graphs $G$ with ${\rm gp}_{\rm e}(G) = |E(G)| - 1$ and with ${\rm gp}_{\rm e}(G) = 3$ are respectively characterized. Sharp upper and lower bounds on ${\rm gp}_{\rm e}(G)$ are proved for block graphs $G$ and exact values are determined for several specific block graphs.
