Abstract:We give a broad survey of inequalities for the number of linear extensions of finite posets. We review many examples, discuss open problems, and present recent results on the subject. We emphasize the bounds, the equality conditions of the inequalities, and the computational complexity aspects of the results.

Abstract:We employ the combinatorial atlas technology to prove new correlation inequalities for the number of linear extensions of finite posets. These include the approximate independence of probabilities and expectations of values of random linear extensions, closely related to Stanley's inequality. We also give applications to the numbers of standard Young tableaux and to Euler numbers.

Abstract:Sign imbalance is a statistic on posets which counts the difference between the number of even and odd linear extensions. We prove complexity results about the sign imbalance and parity of linear extensions, focusing on the representative case of height 2 posets. We then consider a recent conjecture of Chan and Pak.

Abstract:For an inequality system defined by an infinite family of proper convex functions, we introduce some new notions of constraint qualifications in terms of the epigraphs of the conjugates of these functions and study relationships between these new constraint qualifications and other well-known constraint qualifications including the basic constraint qualification studied by Hiriart-Urrutty and Lemarechal and by Li, Nahak, and Singer. Extensions of known results to more general settings are presented, and applications to particular important problems, such as conic programming and approximation theory, are also studied.

Abstract:For an inequality system defined by a possibly infinite family of proper functions (not necessarily lower semicontinuous), we introduce some new notions of constraint qualifications in terms of the epigraphs of the conjugates of these functions. Under the new constraint qualifications, we obtain characterizations of those reverse-convex inequalities which are a consequence of the constrained system, and we provide necessary and/or sufficient conditions for a stable Farkas lemma to hold. Similarly, we provide characterizations for constrained minimization problems to have the strong or strong stable Lagrangian dualities. Several known results in the conic programming problem are extended and improved.

Abstract:The coefficients of the chain polynomial of a finite poset enumerate chains in the poset by their number of elements. It has been a challenging open problem to determine which posets have real-rooted chain polynomials. Two new classes of posets, namely those of all rank-selected subposets of Cohen-Macaulay simplicial posets and all noncrossing partition lattices associated to finite Coxeter groups, are shown to have this property. The first result generalizes one of Brenti and Welker. As a special case, the descent enumerator of permutations of the set $\{1, 2,\dots,n\}$ which have ascents at specified positions is shown to be real-rooted, hence log-concave and unimodal, and a good estimate for the location of the peak is deduced.

Abstract:We use a technique introduced by M. Beattie et al for constructing finite dimensional pointed Hopf algebras. We apply, this technique to obtain the Ore extension of the algebra kS of a finite commutative Clifford monoid S. This Ore extension is a non-commutative and non-cocommutative pointed semilattice graded weak Hopf algebra. Its quotients are finite dimensional pointed semilattice graded weak Hopf algebras. Finally, we obtain the Ore extension of the algebra of the dual of the commutative Clifford monoid.

Abstract:For a general infinite system of convex inequalities in a Banach space, we study the basic constraint qualification and its relationship with other fundamental concepts, including various versions of conditions of Slater type, the Mangasarian--Fromovitz constraint qualification, as well as the Pshenichnyi--Levin--Valadier property introduced by Li, Nahak, and Singer. Applications are given in the restricted range approximation problem, constrained optimization problems, as well as in the approximation problem with constraints by conditionally positive semidefinite functions.

Abstract:Let be a real closed field. Given a closed and bounded semialgebraic set and semialgebraic continuous functions such that , there exist an integer and such that the inequality (Łojasiewicz inequality) holds for all . In this paper, we consider the case when A is defined by a quantifier-free formula with atoms of the form for some finite subset of polynomials , and the graphs of are also defined by quantifier-free formulas with atoms of the form , for some finite set . We prove that the Łojasiewicz exponent in this case is bounded by . Our bound depends on d and n but is independent of the combinatorial parameters, namely the cardinalities of and . The previous best-known upper bound in this generality appeared in P. Solernó, Effective Łojasiewicz Inequalities in Semi-Algebraic Geometry, Applicable Algebra in Engineering, Communication and Computing (1991) and depended on the sum of degrees of the polynomials defining and thus implicitly on the cardinalities of and . As a consequence, we improve the current best error bounds for polynomial systems under some conditions. Finally, we prove a version of Łojasiewicz inequality in polynomially bounded o-minimal structures. We prove the existence of a common upper bound on the Łojasiewicz exponent for certain combinatorially defined infinite (but not necessarily definable) families of pairs of functions. This improves a prior result of Chris Miller (C. Miller, Expansions of the real field with power functions, Ann. Pure Appl. Logic (1994)).

Abstract:A chain poset, by definition, consists of chains of ordered elements in a poset. We study the chain posets associated to two posets: the Boolean algebra and the poset of isotropic flags. We prove that, in both cases, the chain posets satisfy the strong Sperner property and are rank-log concave.

Abstract:We prove a weak version of the cross--product conjecture: ${F}(k+1,\ell) {F}(k,\ell+1) \geq (\frac12+\varepsilon) {F}(k,\ell) {F}(k+1,\ell+1)$, where ${F}(k,\ell)$ is the number of linear extensions for which the values at fixed elements $x,y,z$ are $k$ and $\ell$ apart, respectively, and where $\varepsilon>0$ depends on the poset. We also prove the converse inequality and disprove the {generalized cross--product conjecture}. The proofs use geometric inequalities for mixed volumes and combinatorics of words.

Abstract:Classical problems of sorting and searching assume an underlying linear ordering of the objects being compared. In this paper, we study these problems in the context of partially ordered sets, in which some pairs of objects are incomparable. This generalization is interesting from a combinatorial perspective, and it has immediate applications in ranking scenarios where there is no underlying linear ordering, e.g., conference submissions. It also has applications in reconstructing certain types of networks, including biological networks. Our results represent significant progress over previous results from two decades ago by Faigle and Turn. In particular, we present the first algorithm that sorts a width-w poset of size n with query complexity $O(n(w+\log n))$ and prove that this query complexity is asymptotically optimal. We also describe a variant of Mergesort with query complexity $O(wn\log\frac{n}{w})$ and total complexity $O(w^{2}n\log\frac{n}{w})$; an algorithm with the same query complexity was given by Faigle and Turn, but no efficient implementation of that algorithm is known. Both our sorting algorithms can be applied with negligible overhead to the more general problem of reconstructing transitive relations. We also consider two related problems: finding the minimal elements, and its generalization to finding the bottom k levels, called the k-selection problem. We give efficient deterministic and randomized algorithms for finding the minimal elements with query complexity and total complexity $O(wn)$. We provide matching lower bounds for the query complexity up to a factor of 2 and generalize the results to the k-selection problem. Finally, we present efficient algorithms for computing a linear extension of a poset and computing the heights of all elements.

Abstract:The famous Erdős–Heilbronn conjecture plays an important role in the development of additive combinatorial number theory. In 2007 Z.W. Sun made the following further conjecture (which is the linear extension of the Erdős–Heilbronn conjecture): For any finite subset A of a field F and nonzero elements a1,…,an of F, we have|{a1x1+⋯+anxn:x1,…,xn∈A,andxi≠xjifi≠j}|⩾min{p(F)−δ,n(|A|−n)+1}, where the additive order p(F) of the multiplicative identity of F is different from n+1, and δ∈{0,1} takes the value 1 if and only if n=2 and a1+a2=0. In this paper we prove this conjecture of Sun when p(F)⩾n(3n−5)/2.
