Abstract:Sign imbalance is a statistic on posets which counts the difference between the number of even and odd linear extensions. We prove complexity results about the sign imbalance and parity of linear extensions, focusing on the representative case of height 2 posets. We then consider a recent conjecture of Chan and Pak.

Abstract:Let the sign of a standard Young tableau be the sign of the permutation you get by reading it row by row from left to right, like a book. A conjecture by Richard Stanley says that the sum of the signs of all SYTs with n squares is 2^[n/2]. We present a stronger theorem with a purely combinatorial proof using the Robinson-Schensted correspondence and a new concept called chess tableaux. We also prove a sharpening of another conjecture by Stanley concerning weighted sums of squares of sign-imbalances. The proof is built on a remarkably simple relation between the sign of a permutation and the signs of its RS-corresponding tableaux.

Abstract:Stanley introduced in 1986 the order polytope and the chain polytope for a given finite poset. These polytopes contain much information about the poset and have given rise to important examples in polyhedral geometry. In 1993, Reiner introduced signed posets as natural type-B analogues of posets. We define and study signed order and chain polytopes. Our results include convex-hull and halfspace descriptions, unimodular triangulations, Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials and their relations to signed permutation statistics, and a Gorenstein characterization of signed order and chain polytopes.

Two classes of posets with real-rooted chain polynomials

Abstract:The coefficients of the chain polynomial of a finite poset enumerate chains in the poset by their number of elements. It has been a challenging open problem to determine which posets have real-rooted chain polynomials. Two new classes of posets, namely those of all rank-selected subposets of Cohen-Macaulay simplicial posets and all noncrossing partition lattices associated to finite Coxeter groups, are shown to have this property. The first result generalizes one of Brenti and Welker. As a special case, the descent enumerator of permutations of the set $\{1, 2,\dots,n\}$ which have ascents at specified positions is shown to be real-rooted, hence log-concave and unimodal, and a good estimate for the location of the peak is deduced.

Abstract:We prove a conjecture of Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko that says that rank polynomials of the distributive lattices of lower ideals of fence posets are unimodal. We do this by introducing a related class of circular fence posets and proving a stronger version of the conjecture due to McConville, Sagan and Smyth. We show that the rank polynomials of circular fence posets are symmetric and conjecture that unimodality holds except in some particular cases. We also apply the recent work of Elizalde, Plante, Roby and Sagan on rowmotion on fences and show many of their homomesy results hold for the circular case as well.

Abstract:A chain poset, by definition, consists of chains of ordered elements in a poset. We study the chain posets associated to two posets: the Boolean algebra and the poset of isotropic flags. We prove that, in both cases, the chain posets satisfy the strong Sperner property and are rank-log concave.

Abstract:This paper studies the complexity of matrix Putinar's Positivstellensatz on the semialgebraic set that is given by the polynomial matrix inequality. Under the archimedeanness, we prove a polynomial bound on degrees of terms appearing in the representation of matrix Putinar's Positivstellensatz. Estimates on the exponent and constant are given. As a byproduct, a polynomial bound on the convergence rate of matrix sum-of-squares relaxations is obtained, which resolves an open question raised by Dinh and Pham. When the constraining set is unbounded (the archimedeanness fails), we also prove a similar bound for the matrix version of Putinar--Vasilescu's Positivstellensatz by exploiting homogenization techniques.

Abstract:We present a simplified variant of Biane's bijection between permutations and 3-colored Motzkin paths with weight that keeps track of the inversion number, excedance number and a statistic so-called depth of a permutation. This generalizes a result by Guay-Paquet and Petersen about a continued fraction of the generating function for depth on the permutations of n elements. In terms of weighted Motzkin path, we establish an involution on the permutations that reverses the parities of depth and excedance numbers simultaneously, which proves that the numbers of permutations with even and odd depth (excedance numbers, respectively) are equal if n is even and differ by the tangent number if n is odd. Moreover, we present some interesting sign-imbalance results on permutations and derangements, refined with respect to depth and excedance numbers.

Abstract:We prove an asymptotically sharp version of the Bourgain-Clozel-Kahane and Cohn-Gonçalves sign uncertainty principles for polynomials of sublinear degree times a Gaussian, as the dimension tends to infinity. In particular, we show that polynomials whose degree is sublinear in the dimension cannot improve asymptotically on those of degree at most three. This question arises naturally in the study of both linear programming bounds for sphere packing and the spinless modular bootstrap bound for free bosons.

Abstract:We provide a proof of the following fact: if a complex scheme $Y$ has Behrend function constantly equal to a sign $\sigma \in \{\pm 1\}$, then all of its components $Z \subset Y$ are generically reduced and satisfy $(-1)^{\mathrm{dim}_{\mathbb C} T_pY} = \sigma = (-1)^{\mathrm{dim}Z}$ for $p \in Z$ a general point. Given the recent counterexamples to the parity conjecture for the Hilbert scheme of points $\mathrm{Hilb}^n(\mathbb A^3)$, our argument suggests a possible path to disprove the constancy of the Behrend function of $\mathrm{Hilb}^n(\mathbb A^3)$.

Abstract:In this article we first compare the set of elements in the socle of an ideal of a polynomial algebra over a field K that are not in the ideal itself with Macaulay's inverse systems of such polynomial algebras in a purely combinatorial way for monomial ideals, and then develop some closure operational properties for the related poset . We then derive some algebraic propositions of -graded rings (a natural generalization of the usual -grading where is a monoid) that then have some combinatorial consequences. Interestingly, some of the results from this part that uniformly hold for polynomial rings are always false when the ring is local. We finally delve into some direct computations, in relation to a given term order of the monomials, for general zero-dimensional Gorenstein ideals, and we deduce a few explicit observations and results for the inverse systems from some recent results about socles.

Abstract:The width of a poset is the size of its largest antichain. Sperner's theorem states that $(2^{[n]},\subset)$ is a poset whose width equals the size of its largest layer. We show that Hamming ball posets also have this property. This extends earlier work that proves this in the case of small radii. Our proof is inspired by (and corrects) a result of Harper.

Abstract:A permutation is called mod-k-alternating if its entries are restricted to having the same remainder as the index, modulo some integer $k \geq 1.$ In this paper, we find the sign-balance for mod-k-alternating permutations with respect to the statistic excedance. Moreover, we study the sign-balance for excedances over mod-k-alternating derangements. The results are obtained by constructing suitable matrices and connecting their determinants with the signed excedance enumeration of mod-k-alternating permutations. As an application of the signed excedance enumeration, we prove that when $n \equiv k \pmod {2k}$, the excedance enumerating polynomials over the even and odd mod-k-alternating permutations, starting with a fixed remainder, are gamma-positive.

Sorting and Selection in Posets

Abstract:Classical problems of sorting and searching assume an underlying linear ordering of the objects being compared. In this paper, we study these problems in the context of partially ordered sets, in which some pairs of objects are incomparable. This generalization is interesting from a combinatorial perspective, and it has immediate applications in ranking scenarios where there is no underlying linear ordering, e.g., conference submissions. It also has applications in reconstructing certain types of networks, including biological networks. Our results represent significant progress over previous results from two decades ago by Faigle and Turn. In particular, we present the first algorithm that sorts a width-w poset of size n with query complexity $O(n(w+\log n))$ and prove that this query complexity is asymptotically optimal. We also describe a variant of Mergesort with query complexity $O(wn\log\frac{n}{w})$ and total complexity $O(w^{2}n\log\frac{n}{w})$; an algorithm with the same query complexity was given by Faigle and Turn, but no efficient implementation of that algorithm is known. Both our sorting algorithms can be applied with negligible overhead to the more general problem of reconstructing transitive relations. We also consider two related problems: finding the minimal elements, and its generalization to finding the bottom k levels, called the k-selection problem. We give efficient deterministic and randomized algorithms for finding the minimal elements with query complexity and total complexity $O(wn)$. We provide matching lower bounds for the query complexity up to a factor of 2 and generalize the results to the k-selection problem. Finally, we present efficient algorithms for computing a linear extension of a poset and computing the heights of all elements.

Abstract:Motivated by Kitaev and Zhang's recent work on non-overlapping ascents in stack-sortable permutations and Dumont's permutation interpretation of the Jacobi elliptic functions, we investigate some parity statistics on restricted permutations. Some new related bijections are constructed and two refinements of the generating function for descents over $321$-avoiding permutations due to Barnabei, Bonetti and Silimbanian are obtained. In particular, an open problem of Kitaev and Zhang about non-overlapping ascents on $321$-avoiding permutations is solved and several combinatorial interpretations for the Catalan--Schett polynomials are found. The stack-sortable permutations are at the heart of our approaches.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Computing, Volume 53, Issue 3, Page 764-802, June 2024. We consider proof complexity in light of the unusual binary encoding of certain combinatorial principles. We contrast this proof complexity with the normal unary encoding in several refutation systems, based on Resolution and Sherali–Adams. We first consider [math], which is an extension of Resolution working on [math]-DNFs (Disjunctive Normal Form formulas). We prove an exponential lower bound of [math] for the size of refutations of the binary version of the [math]-Clique Principle in [math], where [math] and [math] is a doubly exponential function. Our result improves that of Lauria et al., who proved a similar lower bound for [math], i.e., Resolution. For the [math]-Clique and other principles we study, we show how lower bounds in Resolution for the unary version follow from lower bounds in [math] for the binary version, so we start a systematic study of the complexity of proofs in Resolution-based systems for families of contradictions given in the binary encoding. We go on to consider the binary version of the (weak) Pigeonhole Principle [math]. We prove that for any [math], [math] requires refutations of size [math] in [math] for [math]. Our lower bound cannot be improved substantially with the same method since for [math] we can prove there are [math] size refutations of [math] in [math]. This is a consequence of the same upper bound for the unary weak Pigeonhole Principle of Buss and Pitassi. We contrast unary versus binary encoding in the Sherali–Adams (SA) refutation system where we prove lower bounds for both rank and size. For the unary encoding of the Pigeonhole Principle and the Ordering Principle, it is known that linear rank is required for refutations in SA, although both admit refutations of polynomial size. We prove that the binary encoding of the (weak) Pigeonhole Principle [math] requires exponentially sized (in [math]) SA refutations, whereas the binary encoding of the Ordering Principle admits logarithmic rank, polynomially sized SA refutations. We continue by considering a natural refutation system we call "SA+Squares," which is intermediate between SA and Lasserre (Sum-of-Squares). This has been studied under the name static-[math] by Grigoriev et al. In this system, the unary encoding of the Linear Ordering Principle [math] requires [math] rank while the unary encoding of the Pigeonhole Principle becomes constant rank. Since Potechin has shown that the rank of [math] in Lasserre is [math], we uncover an almost quadratic separation between SA+Squares and Lasserre in terms of rank. Grigoriev et al. noted that the unary Pigeonhole Principle has rank 2 in SA+Squares and therefore polynomial size. Since we show the same applies to the binary [math], we deduce an exponential separation for size between SA and SA+Squares.

Abstract:We consider generalizations of the classical secretary problem, also known as the problem of optimal choice, to posets where the only information we have is the size of the poset and the number of maximal elements. We show that, given this information, there is an algorithm that is successful with probability at least \documentclass{article} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{amsmath} \pagestyle{empty} \begin{document} \begin{align*}\frac{1}{e}\end{align*} \end{document}. We conjecture that if there are k maximal elements and k ≥ 2 then this can be improved to \documentclass{article} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{amsmath} \pagestyle{empty} \begin{document} \begin{align*}\sqrt\lbrack k-1\rbrack {\frac{1}{k}}\end{align*} \end{document}, and prove this conjecture for posets of width k. Abstract:We consider the following solitaire game whose rules are reminiscent of the children's game of leapfrog. The player is handed an arbitrary ordering $\pi=(x_1,x_2,...,x_n)$ of the elements of a finite poset $(P,\prec)$. At each round an element may "skip over" the element in front of it, i.e. swap positions with it. For example, if $x_i \prec x_{i+1}$, then it is allowed to move from $\pi$ to the ordering $(x_1,x_2,...,x_{i-1},x_{i+1},x_i,x_{i+2},...,x_n)$. The player is to carry out such steps as long as such swaps are possible. When there are several consecutive pairs of elements that satisfy this condition, the player can choose which pair to swap next. Does the order of swaps matter for the final ordering or is it uniquely determined by the initial ordering? The reader may guess correctly that the latter proposition is correct. What may be more surprising, perhaps, is that this question is not trivial. The proof works by constructing an appropriate system of invariants.

Abstract:Let the sign of a skew standard Young tableau be the sign of the permutation you get by reading it row by row from left to right, like a book. We examine how the sign property is transferred by the skew Robinson-Schensted correspondence invented by Sagan and Stanley. The result is a remarkably simple generalization of the ordinary non-skew formula. The sum of the signs of all standard tableaux on a given skew shape is the sign-imbalance of that shape. We generalize previous results on the sign-imbalance of ordinary partition shapes to skew ones.
