Abstract:A linear extension of a poset P=(X,≺) is a permutation x 1,x 2,…,x |X| of X such that i<j whenever x i ≺x j . For a given poset P=(X,≺) and a cost function c(x,y) defined on X×X, we want to find a linear extension of P such that maximum cost is as small as possible. For the general case, it is NP-complete. In this paper we consider the linear extension problem with the assumption that c(x,y)=0 whenever x and y are incomparable. First, we prove the discussed problem is polynomially solvable for a special poset. And then, we present a polynomial algorithm to obtain an approximate solution.

Abstract:The question if a given partial solution to a problem can be extended reasonably occurs in many algorithmic approaches for optimization problems. For instance, when enumerating minimal dominating sets of a graph $G=(V,E)$, one usually arrives at the problem to decide for a vertex set $U \subseteq V$, if there exists a \textit{minimal} dominating set $S$ with $U\subseteq S$. We propose a general, partial-order based formulation of such extension problems and study a number of specific problems which can be expressed in this framework. Possibly contradicting intuition, these problems tend to be NP-hard, even for problems where the underlying optimisation problem can be solved in polynomial time. This raises the question of how fixing a partial solution causes this increase in difficulty. In this regard, we study the parameterised complexity of extension problems with respect to parameters related to the partial solution, as well as the optimality of simple exact algorithms under the Exponential-Time Hypothesis. All complexity considerations are also carried out in very restricted scenarios, be it degree restrictions or topological restrictions (planarity) for graph problems or the size of the given partition for the considered extension variant of Bin Packing.

Abstract:It is well known that general 0–1 programming problems are NP-Complete and their optimal solutions cannot be found with polynomial-time algorithms unless P=NP. In this paper, we identify a specific class of 0–1 programming problems that is polynomially solvable, and propose two polynomial-time algorithms to find its optimal solutions. This class of 0–1 programming problems commits to a wide range of real-world industrial applications. We provide an instance of representative in the field of supply chain management.

Abstract:We describe constructions of extended formulations that establish a certain relaxed version of the Hirsch conjecture and prove that if there is a pivot rule for the simplex algorithm for which one can bound the number of steps by a polynomial in the diameter plus the number of facets of the polyhedron of feasible solutions then the general linear programming problem can be solved in strongly polynomial time.

Abstract:Poset games are a class of combinatorial game that remain unsolved. Soltys and Wilson proved that computing wining strategies is in \textbf{PSPACE} and aside from special cases such as Nim and N-Free games, \textbf{P} time algorithms for finding ideal play are unknown. This paper presents methods calculate the nimber of posets games allowing for the classification of winning or losing positions. The results present an equivalence of ideal strategies on posets that are seemingly unrelated.

Abstract:We present a new polynomial-time algorithm for linear programming. The running-time of this algorithm is O(n3-5L2), as compared to O(n6L2) for the ellipsoid algorithm. We prove that given a polytope P and a strictly interior point a &egr; P, there is a projective transformation of the space that maps P, a to P', a' having the following property. The ratio of the radius of the smallest sphere with center a', containing P' to the radius of the largest sphere with center a' contained in P' is O (n). The algorithm consists of repeated application of such projective transformations each followed by optimization over an inscribed sphere to create a sequence of points which converges to the optimal solution in polynomial-time.

Abstract:We study the following optimal extension problem of openness type: given a complex manifold M , a closed subvariety and a holomorphic vector bundle , for any holomorphic section f defined on some open neighborhood U of S , find an holomorphic section F on M such that , and the norm of F on M is optimally controlled by the norm of f on U . Answering the above problem, we prove an optimal extension theorem of openness type on weakly pseudoconvex Kähler manifolds, which generalizes a couple of known results on such a problem. Moreover, we prove a product property for certain minimal extensions and give an alternative proof to a version of the above extension theorem. We also present some applications to the usual optimal extension problem and the equality part of Suita's conjecture.

Abstract:With the goal of obtaining strong relaxations for binary polynomial optimization problems, we introduce the pseudo-Boolean polytope defined as the convex hull of the set of binary points satisfying a collection of equations containing pseudo-Boolean functions. By representing the pseudo-Boolean polytope via a signed hypergraph, we obtain sufficient conditions under which this polytope has a polynomial-size extended formulation. Our new framework unifies and extends all prior results on the existence of polynomial-size extended formulations for the convex hull of the feasible region of binary polynomial optimization problems of degree at least three.

Abstract:The famous Erdős–Heilbronn conjecture plays an important role in the development of additive combinatorial number theory. In 2007 Z.W. Sun made the following further conjecture (which is the linear extension of the Erdős–Heilbronn conjecture): For any finite subset A of a field F and nonzero elements a1,…,an of F, we have|{a1x1+⋯+anxn:x1,…,xn∈A,andxi≠xjifi≠j}|⩾min{p(F)−δ,n(|A|−n)+1}, where the additive order p(F) of the multiplicative identity of F is different from n+1, and δ∈{0,1} takes the value 1 if and only if n=2 and a1+a2=0. In this paper we prove this conjecture of Sun when p(F)⩾n(3n−5)/2. We also obtain a sharp lower bound for the cardinality of the restricted sumset{x1+⋯+xn:x1∈A1,…,xn∈An,andP(x1,…,xn)≠0}, where A1,…,An are finite subsets of a field F and P(x1,…,xn) is a general polynomial over F.

Abstract:The paper presents a technique for solving the binary linear programming model in polynomial time. The general binary linear programming problem is transformed into a convex quadratic programming problem. The convex quadratic programming problem is then solved by interior point algorithms. This settles one of the open problems of whether P = NP or not. The worst case complexity of interior point algorithms for the convex quadratic problem is polynomial. It can also be shown that every liner integer problem can be converted into binary linear problem.

Abstract:We consider generalizations of the classical secretary problem, also known as the problem of optimal choice, to posets where the only information we have is the size of the poset and the number of maximal elements. We show that, given this information, there is an algorithm that is successful with probability at least \documentclass{article} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{amsmath} \pagestyle{empty} \begin{document} \begin{align*}\frac{1}{e}\end{align*} \end{document}. We conjecture that if there are k maximal elements and k ≥ 2 then this can be improved to \documentclass{article} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{amsmath} \pagestyle{empty} \begin{document} \begin{align*}\sqrt\lbrack k-1\rbrack {\frac{1}{k}}\end{align*} \end{document}, and prove this conjecture for posets of width k. Abstract:We consider an optimization problem in a convex space $E$ with an affine objective function, subject to $J$ constraints in the forms of inequalities on some other affine functions, where $J$ is a given nonnegative integer. Under suitable conditions, we apply the Feinberg-Shwartz lemma in finite dimensional convex analysis to show that there exists an optimal solution, which is in the form of a mixture of no more than $J+1$ extreme points of $E$. It seems that in the current setup, this result has not yet been made available, because the concerned problem does not fit into the framework of standard convex optimization problems.

Abstract:Classical problems of sorting and searching assume an underlying linear ordering of the objects being compared. In this paper, we study these problems in the context of partially ordered sets, in which some pairs of objects are incomparable. This generalization is interesting from a combinatorial perspective, and it has immediate applications in ranking scenarios where there is no underlying linear ordering, e.g., conference submissions. It also has applications in reconstructing certain types of networks, including biological networks. Our results represent significant progress over previous results from two decades ago by Faigle and Turn. In particular, we present the first algorithm that sorts a width-w poset of size n with query complexity $O(n(w+\log n))$ and prove that this query complexity is asymptotically optimal. We also describe a variant of Mergesort with query complexity $O(wn\log\frac{n}{w})$ and total complexity $O(w^{2}n\log\frac{n}{w})$; an algorithm with the same query complexity was given by Faigle and Turn, but no efficient implementation of that algorithm is known. Both our sorting algorithms can be applied with negligible overhead to the more general problem of reconstructing transitive relations. We also consider two related problems: finding the minimal elements, and its generalization to finding the bottom k levels, called the k-selection problem. We give efficient deterministic and randomized algorithms for finding the minimal elements with query complexity and total complexity $O(wn)$. We provide matching lower bounds for the query complexity up to a factor of 2 and generalize the results to the k-selection problem. Finally, we present efficient algorithms for computing a linear extension of a poset and computing the heights of all elements.

On the Power of Symmetric Linear Programs

Abstract:We consider families of symmetric linear programs (LPs) that decide a property of graphs (or other relational structures) in the sense that, for each size of graph, there is an LP defining a polyhedral lift that separates the integer points corresponding to graphs with the property from those corresponding to graphs without the property. We show that this is equivalent, with at most polynomial blow-up in size, to families of symmetric Boolean circuits with threshold gates. In particular, when we consider polynomial-size LPs, the model is equivalent to definability in a non-uniform version of fixed-point logic with counting (FPC). Known upper and lower bounds for FPC apply to the non-uniform version. In particular, this implies that the class of graphs with perfect matchings has polynomial-size symmetric LPs while we obtain an exponential lower bound for symmetric LPs for the class of Hamiltonian graphs. We compare and contrast this with previous results (Yannakakis 1991) showing that any symmetric LPs for the matching and TSP polytopes have exponential size. As an application, we establish that for random, uniformly distributed graphs, polynomial-size symmetric LPs are as powerful as general Boolean circuits. We illustrate the effect of this on the well-studied planted-clique problem.

Abstract:A rational number is dyadic if it has a finite binary representation $p/2^k$, where $p$ is an integer and $k$ is a nonnegative integer. Dyadic rationals are important for numerical computations because they have an exact representation in floating-point arithmetic on a computer. A vector is dyadic if all its entries are dyadic rationals. We study the problem of finding a dyadic optimal solution to a linear program, if one exists. We show how to solve dyadic linear programs in polynomial time. We give bounds on the size of the support of a solution as well as on the size of the denominators. We identify properties that make the solution of dyadic linear programs possible: closure under addition and negation, and density, and we extend the algorithmic framework beyond the dyadic case.

Extended Formulations for Binary Optimal Control Problems

Abstract:Extended formulations are an important tool in polyhedral combinatorics. Many combinatorial optimization problems require an exponential number of inequalities when modeled as a linear program in the natural space of variables. However, by adding artificial variables, one can often find a small linear formulation, i.e., one containing a polynomial number of variables and constraints, such that the projection to the original space of variables yields a perfect linear formulation. Motivated by binary optimal control problems with switching constraints, we show that a similar approach can be useful also for optimization problems in function space, in order to model the closed convex hull of feasible controls in a compact way. More specifically, we present small extended formulations for switches with bounded variation and for dwell-time constraints. For general linear switching point constraints, we devise an extended model linearizing the problem, but show that a small extended formulation that is compatible with discretization cannot exist unless P=NP.

Abstract:We report the experimental results on certifying 1% global optimality of solutions of AC-OPF instances from PGLiB via the CS-TSSOS hierarchy—a moment-SOS based hierarchy that exploits both correlative and term sparsity, which can provide tighter SDP relaxations than Shor’s relaxation. Our numerical experiments demonstrate that the CS-TSSOS hierarchy scales well with the problem size and is indeed useful in certifying global optimality of solutions for large-scale real world problems, e.g., the AC-OPF problem. In particular, we are able to certify 1% global optimality for a challenging AC-OPF instance with 6515 buses involving 14398 real variables and 63577 constraints.

Abstract:Our focus is on the online linear packing-covering problem (OLPCP). Within this domain, we present an algorithm that attains near-optimal performance based on generalized Chernoff bounds for general random variables, assuming inputs are received in a uniformly random order and under almost stringent conditions. Through VCG protocols, we are able to unveil the inaugural truthful near-optimal mechanism for OLPCP, all within the confines of nearly tight conditions.
