Abstract:For a linear difference equation with the coefficients being computable sequences, we establish algorithmic undecidability of the problem of determining the dimension of the solution space including the case when some additional prior information on the dimension is available.

Abstract:The notion of lacunary infinite numerical sequence is introduced. It is shown that for an arbitrary linear difference operator L with coefficients belonging to the set R of infinite numerical sequences, a criterion (i.e., a necessary and sufficient condition) for the infinite dimensionality of its space $V_L$ of solutions belonging to R is the presence of a lacunary sequence in $V_L$.

Abstract:We characterize the algorithmic dimensions (i.e., the lower and upper asymptotic densities of information) of infinite binary sequences in terms of the inability of learning functions having an algorithmic constraint to detect patterns in them. Our pattern detection criterion is a quantitative extension of the criterion that Zaffora Blando used to characterize the algorithmically random (i.e., Martin-Löf random) sequences. Our proof uses Lutz's and Mayordomo's respective characterizations of algorithmic dimension in terms of gales and Kolmogorov complexity.

Abstract:We classify order $3$ linear difference operators over $\mathbb{C}(x)$ that are solvable in terms of lower order difference operators. To prove this result, we introduce the notion of absolute irreducibility for difference modules, and classify modules that are irreducible but not absolutely irreducible by using restricted and induced modules. We also show how restriction and induction give coordinate-free formulations of sectioning and interlacing of sequences.

Linear equations with monomial constraints and decision problems in abelian-by-cyclic groups

Abstract:We show that it is undecidable whether a system of linear equations over the Laurent polynomial ring $\mathbb{Z}[X^{\pm}]$ admit solutions where a specified subset of variables take value in the set of monomials $\{X^z \mid z \in \mathbb{Z}\}$. In particular, we construct a finitely presented $\mathbb{Z}[X^{\pm}]$-module, where it is undecidable whether a linear equation $X^{z_1} \boldsymbol{f}_1 + \cdots + X^{z_n} \boldsymbol{f}_n = \boldsymbol{f}_0$ has solutions $z_1, \ldots, z_n \in \mathbb{Z}$. This contrasts the decidability of the case $n = 1$, which can be deduced from Noskov's Lemma. We apply this result to settle a number of problems in computational group theory. We show that it is undecidable whether a system of equations has solutions in the wreath product $\mathbb{Z} \wr \mathbb{Z}$, providing a negative answer to an open problem of Kharlampovich, López and Miasnikov (2020). We show that there exists a finitely generated abelian-by-cyclic group in which the problem of solving a single quadratic equation is undecidable. We also construct a finitely generated abelian-by-cyclic group, different to that of Mishchenko and Treier (2017), in which the Knapsack Problem is undecidable. In contrast, we show that the problem of Coset Intersection is decidable in all finitely generated abelian-by-cyclic groups.

Linear independence over naturally-ordered semirings with applications to dimension arguments in extremal combinatorics

Abstract:A family of subsets $\mathcal{F} \subseteq \mathcal{P}(\{1, 2, \ldots, n\})$ has the disparate union property if any two disjoint subfamilies $\mathcal{F}_1, \mathcal{F}_2 \subseteq \mathcal{F}$ have distinct unions $\bigcup \mathcal{F}_1 \neq \bigcup \mathcal{F}_2$; what is the maximal size of a family with the disparate union property? Is there a simple and efficiently computable characterization of size-maximal families? This paper highlights a class of partially-ordered semirings -- difference ordered semirings with a multiplicatively absorbing element -- and shows it is common and easily constructed. We prove that a suitably modified definition of linear independence for semimodules over such semirings enjoys the same maximality property as for vector spaces, and can furthermore be efficiently detected by the bideterminant. These properties allow us to extend dimension argument in extremal combinatorics and provide simple and direct solutions to the puzzles above.

Abstract:We introduce a broad class of equations that are described by a graph, which includes many well-studied systems. For these, we show that the number of solutions (or the dimension of the solution set) can be bounded by studying certain induced subgraphs. As corollaries, we obtain novel bounds in spectral graph theory on the multiplicities of graph eigenvalues, and in nonlinear dynamical system on the dimension of the equilibrium set of a network.

Abstract:Different index concepts for linear differential-algebraic equations are defined in the general Banach space setting, and compared. For regular finite-dimensional linear differential-algebraic equations, all these indices exist and are equivalent. For infinite-dimensional systems, the situation is more complex. It is proven that although some indices imply others, in general they are not equivalent. The situation is illustrated with a number of examples.

Abstract:We express the solutions to quadratic equations with two variables in the ring of integers using EDT0L languages. We use this to show that EDT0L languages can be used to describe the solutions to one-variable equations in the Heisenberg group. This is done by reducing the question of solving a one-variable equation in the Heisenberg group to solving an equation in the ring of integers, exploiting the strong link between the ring of integers and nilpotent groups.

Abstract:In this article we study the possible size of support of solutions to the discrete stationary Schrodinger equation $\Delta u(x)+V(x)u(x)=0$ in $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Abstract:Differential difference algebras were introduced by Mansfield and Szanto, which arose naturally from differential difference equations. In this paper, we investigate the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of differential difference algebras. We give a lower bound of the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of a differential difference algebra and a sufficient condition under which the lower bound is reached; we also find an upper bound of this Gelfand-Kirillov dimension under some specific conditions and construct an example to show that this upper bound can not be sharpened any more.

Linear Partial Differential Equations in Module of Copolynomials of Several Variables over a Commutative Ring

Abstract:We study the copolynomials of $n$ variables, i.e. $K$-linear mappings from the ring of polynomials $K[x_1,...,x_n]$ into the commutative ring $K$. We prove an existence and uniqueness theorem for a linear differential equation of infinite order which can be considered as an algebraic version of the classical Malgrange-Ehrenpreis theorem for the existence of the fundamental solution of a linear differential operator with constant coefficients. We find the fundamental solutions of linear differential operators of infinite order and show that the unique solution of the corresponding inhomogeneous equation can be represented as a convolution of the fundamental solution of this operator and the right-hand side. We also prove the existence and uniqueness theorem of the Cauchy problem for some linear differential equations in the module of formal power series with copolynomial coefficients.

Abstract:We study the problem of \emph{robust satisfiability} of systems of nonlinear equations, namely, whether for a given continuous function $f:\,K\to\mathbb{R}^n$ on a~finite simplicial complex $K$ and $\alpha>0$, it holds that each function $g:\,K\to\mathbb{R}^n$ such that $\|g-f\|_\infty \leq \alpha$, has a root in $K$. Via a reduction to the extension problem of maps into a sphere, we particularly show that this problem is decidable in polynomial time for every fixed $n$, assuming $\dim K \le 2n-3$. This is a substantial extension of previous computational applications of \emph{topological degree} and related concepts in numerical and interval analysis. Via a reverse reduction we prove that the problem is undecidable when $\dim K\ge 2n-2$, where the threshold comes from the \emph{stable range} in homotopy theory. For the lucidity of our exposition, we focus on the setting when $f$ is piecewise linear. Such functions can approximate general continuous functions, and thus we get approximation schemes and undecidability of the robust satisfiability in other possible settings.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a new infinite-dimensional linking theorem without (PS)-type assumptions. The new theorem needs a weaker linking geometry and produces bounded (PS) sequences. The abstract result will be applied to the study of the existence of solutions of the strongly indefinite partial differential systems. For the first application, we consider the systemΔu=uinΩ,Δv=vinΩ,∂u/∂η=Hv(x,u,v)on∂Ω,∂v/∂η=Hu(x,u,v)on∂Ω,where Ω is a bounded domain in RN with smooth boundary, ∂∂η is the outer normal derivative, H:∂Ω×R×R→R is a positive C1-function. One nontrivial solution is obtained. The second application, we will solve the eigenvalue problem of the systemAv=−f(x,v,w),Bw=βg(x,v,w),β>0,where A, B are self-adjoint operators on L2(Ω), Ω⊂RN is not necessarily bounded; f,g are Carathéodory functions on Ω×R2. We get infinitely many solutions. We deal with asymptotically linear cases for both systems.

Abstract:Differential difference algebras are generalizations of polynomial algebras, quantum planes, and Ore extensions of automorphism type and of derivation type. In this paper, we investigate the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of a finitely generated module over a differential difference algebra through a computational method: Gröbner-Shirshov basis method. We develop the Gröbner-Shirshov basis theory of differential difference algebras, and of finitely generated modules over differential difference algebras, respectively. Then, via Gröbner-Shirshov bases, we give algorithms for computing the Gelfand-Kirillov dimensions of cyclic modules and finitely generated modules over differential difference algebras.

Abstract:We investigate the correspondence between the time and space recognition complexity of languages; for this purpose, we will code the long-continued computations of deterministic two-tape Turing machines by the relatively short-length quantified Boolean formulae. The modified Stockmeyer and Meyer method will appreciably be used for this simulation. It will be proved using this modeling that the complexity classes $\mathbf{EXP}$ and $\mathbf{PSPACE}$ coincide; and more generally, the class $(k\!+\!1)$-fold Deterministic Exponential Time equals to the class $k$-fold Deterministic Exponential Space for each $k\geqslant1$; the space complexity of the languages of the class $\mathbf{P}$ will also be studied. Furthermore, this allows us to slightly improve the early founded lower complexity bound of decidable theories that are nontrivial relative to some equivalence relation (this relation may be equality) -- each of these theories is consistent with the formula, which asserts that there are two non-equivalent elements.
