Abstract:In this article we study solutions to second order linear difference equations with variable coefficients. Under mild conditions we provide closed form solutions using finite continued fraction representations. The proof of the results are elementary and based on factoring a quadratic shift operator. As an application, we obtain two new generalized continued fraction formulas for the mathematical constant $\pi^2$.

We consider a family of fractionally dissipative active scalar equations (including the surface quasi-geostrophic and incompressible porous media models) on two-dimensional bounded domains with smooth boundaries. We construct global unique smooth solutions using a spectral-parabolic regularization of the problem. Abstract:We prove the existence of positive solutions for a system of quasilinear equations driven by -Laplacian operators, with Dirichlet boundary conditions, variable exponents, convection terms, and depending on two parameters. No upper bound on the variable exponents, neither in u nor in , is imposed. It is for the first time when such systems are investigated. The range of solvability for the involved parameters is explicitly determined. Our approach relies on a version of sub-supersolution method for systems that is adapted to the specific character of our problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the boundary stabilization of the wave equation with variable coefficients by Riemannian geometry method subject to a different geometric condition which is motivated by the geometric multiplier identities. Several (multiplier) identities (inequalities) which have been built for constant wave equation by Kormornik and Zuazua [2] are generalized to the variable coefficient case by some computational techniques in Riemannian geometry, so that the precise estimates on the exponential decay rate are derived from those inequalities. Also, the exponential decay for the solutions of semilinear wave equation with variable coefficients is obtained under natural growth and sign assumptions on the nonlinearity. Our method is rather general and can be adapted to other evolution systems with variable coefficients (e.g. elasticity plates) as well.

Abstract:We investigate global bounded solutions of higher regularity to boundary value problems for a general linear nonautonomous first order 1D hyperbolic system in a strip. We establish the existence of such solutions under the assumption of exponential stability and certain dissipativity (or non-resonant) conditions. Our results demonstrate the existence and uniqueness of $C^1$- and $C^2$-bounded solutions, in particular, periodic and almost periodic solutions. The number of imposed dissipativity conditions is related to the regularity of solutions. This connection arises due to the nonautonomous nature of the hyperbolic system under consideration, in contrast to autonomous settings. In the general case of global bounded smooth solutions we assume exponential stability in $H^1$. In the case of periodic solutions, the weaker assumption of $L^2$-exponential stability proves to be sufficient.

Abstract:We consider a system of differential equations and obtain its solutions with exponential asymptotics and analyticity with respect to the spectral parameter. Solutions of such type have importance in studying spectral properties of differential operators. Here, we consider the system of first-order differential equations on a half-line with summable coefficients, containing a nonlinear dependence on the spectral parameter. We obtain fundamental systems of solutions with analyticity in certain sectors, in which it is possible to apply the method of successive approximations. We also construct non-fundamental systems of solutions with analyticity in a large sector, including two previously considered neighboring sectors. The obtained results admit applications in studying inverse spectral problems for the higher-order differential operators with distribution coefficients.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel methodology for evaluating the boundedness, stability, and instability of some vector nonlinear systems with multiple time-varying delays and variable coefficients. The proposed technique develops two scalar counterparts for the initial vector system. The solutions to these scalar nonlinear equations, which also incorporate delays and variable coefficients, provide upper and lower bounds for the norms of solutions to the original vector equations with corresponding history functions. This enables evaluation of the dynamics of a vector system through the analysis of its scalar counterparts. This analysis can be accomplished using simplified analytical reasoning or straightforward simulations, which remain effective even for systems with a large number of coupled equations. Consequently, we introduced some novel boundedness, stability and instability criteria and estimated the radiuses of the balls containing the history functions which stem bounded/stabile solutions to the vector systems. Lastly, we validate our results in representative simulations that also assess their accuracy.

Abstract:We derive local boundedness estimates for weak solutions of a large class of second order quasilinear equations. The structural assumptions imposed on an equation in the class allow vanishing of the quadratic form associated with its principal part and require no smoothness of its coefficients. The class includes second order linear elliptic equations as studied by D. Gilbarg and N. S. Trudinger [1998] and second order subelliptic linear equations as studied by E. Sawyer and R. L. Wheeden [2006 and 2010]. Our results also extend ones obtained by J. Serrin [1964] concerning local boundedness of weak solutions of quasilinear elliptic equations.

Abstract:In this paper we are concerned with the boundedness of solutions of some nonlinear differential equations, which are neither dissipative nor conservative, having the formx″+(x, t)x′+g(x, t)=0, wherefandgare odd polynomials inxwith coefficients which are even and periodic int. Using the KAM theory for reversible systems, we prove that all the solutions are bounded whenever a sharp condition on the degrees offandgis satisfied. We also obtain a boundedness result whenf(x, t)≡0 (i.e., the equation is conservative), under some smoothness assumptions ongwhich improve the previously known ones. In this case, no symmetry conditions ongare needed.

Abstract:We explore the existence, uniqueness, and multiplicity of positive solutions to a system of Hadamard fractional differential equations that contain fractional integral terms. Defined on a finite interval, this system is subject to general coupled nonlocal boundary conditions encompassing Riemann–Stieltjes integrals and Hadamard fractional derivatives. To establish the main results, we employ several fixed-point theorems, namely the Banach contraction mapping principle, the Schauder fixed-point theorem, the Leggett–Williams fixed-point theorem, and the Guo–Krasnosel'skii fixed-point theorem.

Topological Methods in Nonlinear Analysis

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the study of the existence of periodic solutions for a class of semilinear wave equations with variable coefficients. The forced vibrations of a nonhomogeneous string and propagation of seismic waves in nonisotropic media is governed by this mathematical model. When the frequency is a sufficiently large irrational number with bounded partial quotients, the existence of weak solutions is established. Then, under some suitable conditions, we improve the regularity of weak solutions. Our results can also be applied to the corresponding constant coefficients wave equation.
