Symmetry Integrability and Geometry Methods and Applications

Abstract:We develop the algebraic approach to duality, more precisely to intertwinings, within the context of particle systems in general spaces, focusing on the current algebra. We introduce raising, lowering, and neutral operators indexed by test functions and we use them to construct unitary operators, which act as self-intertwiners for some Markov processes having the Pascal process's law as a reversible measure. We show that such unitaries relate to generalized Meixner polynomials. Our primary results are continuum counterparts of results in the discrete setting obtained by Carinci, Franceschini, Giardinà, Groenevelt, and Redig (2019).

Abstract:Let $V$ be a $C_2$-cofinite vertex operator algebra without nonzero elements of negative weights. We prove the conjecture that the spaces spanned by analytic extensions of pseudo-$q$-traces ($q=e^{2\pi i\tau}$) shifted by $-\frac{c}{24}$ of products of geometrically-modified (logarithmic) intertwining operators among grading-restricted generalized $V$-modules are invariant under modular transformations. The convergence and analytic extension result needed to formulate this conjecture and some consequences on such shifted pseudo-$q$-traces were proved by Fiordalisi in [F1] and [F2] using the method developed in [H2]. The method that we use to prove this conjecture is based on the theory of the associative algebras $A^{N}(V)$ for $N\in \mathbb{N}$, their graded modules and their bimodules introduced and studied by the author in [H8] and [H9]. This modular invariance result gives a construction of $C_2$-cofinite genus-one logarithmic conformal field theories from the corresponding genus-zero logarithmic conformal field theories.

Abstract:We investigate the asymptotic distribution of integrals of the $j$-function that are associated to ideal classes in a real quadratic field. To estimate the error term in our asymptotic formula, we prove a bound for sums of Kloosterman sums of half-integral weight that is uniform in every parameter. To establish this estimate we prove a variant of Kuznetsov's formula where the spectral data is restricted to half-integral weight forms in the Kohnen plus space, and we apply Young's hybrid subconvexity estimates for twisted modular $L$-functions.

Abstract:This paper continues with Part I. We define the module for a $\frac{\mathbb{Z}}{2}$-graded meromorphic open-string vertex algebra that is twisted by an involution and show that the axioms are sufficient to guarantee the convergence of products and iterates of any number of vertex operators. A module twisted by the parity involution is called a canonically $\mathbb{Z}_2$-twisted module. As an example, we give a fermionic construction of the canonically $\mathbb{Z}_2$-twisted module for the $\frac{\mathbb{Z}}{2}$-graded meromorphic open-string vertex algebra constructed in Part I. Similar to the situation in Part I, the example is also built on a universal $\mathbb{Z}$-graded non-anti-commutative Fock space where a creation operator and an annihilation operator satisfy the fermionic anti-commutativity relation, while no relations exist among the creation operators or among the zero modes. The Wick's theorem still holds, though the actual vertex operator needs to be corrected from the naïve definition by normal ordering using the $\exp(\Delta(x))$-operator in Part I.

Lambda-operations for hermitian forms over algebras with involution of the first kind

Abstract:The Grothendieck-Witt ring of a field is known to be a $\lambda$-ring, where the $\lambda$-operations are induced by the exterior powers of bilinear spaces. We give a similar construction on the mixed Grothendieck-Witt ring of a central simple algebra with involution of the first kind over a field. In doing so we also develop a general framework for pre-$\lambda$-ring structures on semi-rings graded over a monoid. Some explicit computations of even $\lambda$-powers are given in terms of restrictions of trace forms, and we explain how determinants of hermitian forms (which for us are maximal $\lambda$-powers) induce a duality similar to the one well-known for bilinear forms.

Abstract:We find modular transformations of normalized characters for the following $W$-algebras: (a) $W^{min}_k(\frak{g})$, where $\frak{g}=D_n \, (n \geq 4)$, or $E_6$, $E_7$, $E_8$, and $k$ is a negative integer $\geq -2$, or $\geq -\frac{h^{\vee}}{6}-1$, respectively; (b) quantum Hamiltonian reduction of the $\hat{\frak{g}}$-module $L(k\Lambda_0)$, where $\frak{g}$ is a simple Lie algebra, $f$ is its non-zero nilpotent element, and $k$ is a principal admissible level with the denominator $u > \theta(x)$, where $2x$ is the Dynkin characteristic of $f$ and $\theta$ is the highest root of $\frak{g}$. We prove that these vertex algebras are modular invariant. A conformal vertex algebra is called modular invariant if its character $tr_V q^{L_0-c/24}$ converges to a holomorphic modular function in the complex upper half-plane on a congruence subgroup. We find explicit formulas for their characters. Modular invariance of $V$ is important since, in particular, conjecturally it implies that $V$ is simple, and that $V$ is rational, provided that it is lisse.

Abstract:We study intertwining operator algebras introduced and constructed by Huang. In the case that the intertwining operator algebras involve intertwining operators among irreducible modules for their vertex operator subalgebras, a number of results on intertwining operator algebras were given in [Y.-Z. Huang, Generalized rationality and a “Jacobi identity” for intertwining operator algebras, Selecta Math. (N.S.) 6 (2000) 225–267] but some of the proofs were postponed to an unpublished monograph. In this paper, we give the proofs of these results in [Y.-Z. Huang, Generalized rationality and a “Jacobi identity” for intertwining operator algebras, Selecta Math. (N.S.) 6 (2000) 225–267] and we formulate and prove results for general intertwining operator algebras without assuming that the modules involved are irreducible. In particular, we construct fusing and braiding isomorphisms for general intertwining operator algebras and prove that they satisfy the genus-zero Moore–Seiberg equations. We show that the Jacobi identity for intertwining operator algebras is equivalent to generalized rationality, commutativity and associativity properties of intertwining operator algebras. We introduce the locality for intertwining operator algebras and show that the Jacobi identity is equivalent to the locality, assuming that other axioms hold. Moreover, we establish that any two of the three properties, associativity, commutativity and skew-symmetry, imply the other (except that when deriving skew-symmetry from associativity and commutativity, more conditions are needed). Finally, we show that three definitions of intertwining operator algebras are equivalent.

Intertwining operators in the Takeda-Wood isomorphism

Abstract:Over any non-Archimedean local field of characteristic not equal to $2$, Takeda and Wood constructed types for the two blocks containing the even and odd Weil representations of the metaplectic group $\tilde{G}$, and identified the resulting Hecke algebras $H_\psi^{\pm}$ with the Iwahori-Hecke algebras of odd orthogonal groups $G^{\pm}$ of the same rank. We describe normalized parabolic induction and Jacquet modules in terms of Hecke modules using a suitable variant of Bushnell-Kutzko theory. Furthermore, we match the standard intertwining operators of $\tilde{G}$ and $G^{\pm}$ by proving a variant of Gindikin-Karpelevich formula for $\tilde{G}$. As an application, we describe the behavior of normalized intertwining operators of $\tilde{G}$ in these blocks under Aubert involution, reducing everything to the $G^{\pm}$ side. This is mainly motivated by Arthur's local intertwining relations.

Kauffman bracket intertwiners and the volume conjecture

Abstract:The volume conjecture relates the quantum invariant and the hyperbolic geometry. Bonahon-Wong-Yang introduced a new version of the volume conjecture by using the intertwiners between two isomorphic irreducible representations of the skein algebra. The intertwiners are built from surface diffeomorphisms; they formulated the volume conjecture when diffeomorphisms are pseudo-Anosov. In this paper, we explicitly calculate all the intertwiners for the closed torus using an algebraic embedding from the skein algebra of the closed torus to a quantum torus, and show the limit superior related to the trace of these intertwiners is zero. Moreover, we consider the periodic diffeomorphisms for surfaces with negative Euler characteristic, and conjecture the corresponding limit is zero because the simplicial volume of the mapping tori for periodic diffeomorphisms is zero. For the once punctured torus, we make precise calculations for intertwiners and prove our conjecture.

Twisted vertex algebra modules for irregular connections: A case study

Abstract:A vertex algebra with an action of a group $G$ comes with a notion of $g$-twisted modules, forming a $G$-crossed braided tensor category. For a Lie group $G$, one might instead wish for a notion of $(\mathrm{d}+A)$-twisted modules for any $\mathfrak{g}$-connection on the formal punctured disc. For connections with a regular singularity, this reduces to $g$-twisted modules, where $g$ is the monodromy around the puncture. The case of an irregular singularity is much richer and involved, and we are not aware that it has appeared in vertex algebra language. The present article is intended to spark such a treatment, by providing a list of expectations and an explicit worked-through example with interesting applications. Concretely, we consider the vertex super algebra of symplectic fermions, or equivalently the triplet vertex algebra $\mathcal{W}_p(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ for $p=2$, and study its twisted module with respect to irregular $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-connections. We first determine the category of representations, depending on the formal type of the connection. Then we prove that a Sugawara type construction gives a Virasoro action and we prove that as Virasoro modules our representations are direct sums of Whittaker modules. Conformal field theory with irregular singularities resp. wild ramification appear in the context of geometric Langlands correspondence, and in particular in work by Witten [Wit08]. It has also been studied for example in the context of Gaudin models [FFTL10] and in the context of AGT correspondence [GT12]. Our original motivation comes from semiclassical limits of the generalized quantum Langlands kernel, which fibres over the space of connections [FL24], similar to the affine Lie algebra at critical level. Abstract:This paper is devoted to the construction of new integrable quantum mechanical models based on certain subalgebras of the half loop algebra of gl(N). Various results about these subalgebras are proven by presenting them in the notation of the St Petersburg school. These results are then used to demonstrate the integrability, and find the symmetries, of two types of physical system: twisted Gaudin magnets, and Calogero-type models of particles on several half-lines meeting at a point.

Abstract:We give an interpretation of the Hirota relations for the τ-functions of hierarchies of integrable equations in terms of intertwining operators. This gives the possibility of generalizing the relations to the case of finite-dimensional Lie algebras and quantized universal enveloping algebras. An example of Uq(sl2) is presented.

Abstract:We construct a new discrete basis of 4-valent SU(2) intertwiners. This basis possesses both the advantage of being discrete, while at the same time representing accurately the classical degrees of freedom; hence it is coherent. The closed spin network amplitude obtained from these intertwiners depends on 20 spins and can be evaluated by a generalization of the Racah formula for an arbitrary graph. The asymptotic limit of these amplitudes is found. We give, for the first time, the asymptotics of 15j symbols in the real basis. Remarkably it gives a generalization of the Regge action to twisted geometries.

Abstract:Communications in Contemporary Mathematics, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we study nullity-[math] toroidal extended affine Lie algebras in the context of vertex algebras and their [math]-coordinated modules. Among the main results, we introduce a variant of toroidal extended affine Lie algebras, associate vertex algebras to the variant Lie algebras, and establish a canonical connection between modules for toroidal extended affine Lie algebras and [math]-coordinated modules for these vertex algebras. Furthermore, by employing some results of Billig, we obtain an explicit realization of a class of irreducible modules for the variant Lie algebras.

Abstract:The Quantum Inverse Scattering Method is a scheme for solving integrable models in $1+1$ dimensions, building on an $R$-matrix that satisfies the Yang--Baxter equation and in terms of which one constructs a commuting family of transfer matrices. In the standard formulation, this $R$-matrix acts on a tensor product of vector spaces. Here, we relax this tensorial property and develop a framework for describing and analysing integrable models based on planar algebras, allowing non-separable \textit{$R$-operators} satisfying \textit{generalised} Yang--Baxter equations. We also re-evaluate the notion of integrals of motion and characterise when an (algebraic) \textit{transfer operator} is polynomial in a single integral of motion. We refer to such models as {\em polynomially integrable}. In an eight-vertex model, we demonstrate that the corresponding transfer operator is polynomial in the natural hamiltonian. In the Temperley--Lieb loop model with loop fugacity $\beta\in\mathbb{C}$, we likewise find that, for all but finitely many $\beta$-values, the transfer operator is polynomial in the usual hamiltonian element of the Temperley--Lieb algebra $\mathrm{TL}_n(\beta)$, at least for $n\leq17$. Moreover, we find that this model admits a second canonical hamiltonian, and that this hamiltonian also acts as a polynomial integrability generator for small $n$ and all but finitely many $\beta$-values.
