This report gives an overview of the competition design, explains the organisation of the competition, and presents the competition results.

Abstract:This paper reports on the details of the International Competition on Graph Counting Algorithms (ICGCA) held in 2023. The graph counting problem is to count the subgraphs satisfying specified constraints on a given graph. The problem belongs to #P-complete, a computationally tough class. Since many essential systems in modern society, e.g., infrastructure networks, are often represented as graphs, graph counting algorithms are a key technology to efficiently scan all the subgraphs representing the feasible states of the system. In the ICGCA, contestants were asked to count the paths on a graph under a length constraint. The benchmark set included 150 challenging instances, emphasizing graphs resembling infrastructure networks. Eleven solvers were submitted and ranked by the number of benchmarks correctly solved within a time limit. The winning solver, TLDC, was designed based on three fundamental approaches: backtracking search, dynamic programming, and model counting or #SAT (a counting version of Boolean satisfiability). Detailed analyses show that each approach has its own strengths, and one approach is unlikely to dominate the others. Abstract:*** To appear in IJCAI 2015 proceedings *** In Constraint Programming (CP), a portfolio solver uses a variety of different solvers for solving a given Constraint Satisfaction / Optimization Problem. In this paper we introduce sunny-cp2: the first parallel CP portfolio solver that enables a dynamic, cooperative, and simultaneous execution of its solvers in a multicore setting. It incorporates state-of-the-art solvers, providing also a usable and configurable framework. Empirical results are very promising. sunny-cp2 can even outperform the performance of the oracle solver which always selects the best solver of the portfolio for a given problem.

Abstract:In this document, we introduce XCSP3-core, a subset of XCSP3 that allows us to represent constraint satisfaction/optimization problems. The interest of XCSP3-core is multiple: (i) focusing on the most popular frameworks (CSP and COP) and constraints, (ii) facilitating the parsing process by means of dedicated XCSP3-core parsers written in Java and C++ (using callback functions), (iii) and defining a core format for comparisons (competitions) of constraint solvers.

Abstract:We discuss an integer programming formulation for a class of cooperative games. We focus on algorithmic aspects of the core, one of the most important solution concepts in cooperative game theory. Central to our study is a simple (but very useful) observation that the core for this class is nonempty if and only if an associated linear program has an integer optimal solution. Based on this, we study the computational complexity and algorithms to answer important questions about the cores of various games on graphs, such as maximum flow, connectivity, maximum matching, minimum vertex cover, minimum edge cover, maximum independent set, and minimum coloring.

Abstract:The paper reports on the development of a 2D geometric constraint solver, which is a major component of a new generation intelligent CAD system. The solver takes a graph and rule oriented approach and achieves interactive speed. The paper presents the geometric constraint model and its graph representation, then discusses in detail the algorithms of geometric reasoning based on reduction, describes the architecture of the solver and its basic capabilities.

Abstract:CHC-COMP 2023 is the sixth edition of the Competition of Solvers for Constrained Horn Clauses. The competition was run in April 2023 and the results were presented at the 10th Workshop on Horn Clauses for Verification and Synthesis held in Paris, France, on April 23, 2023. This edition featured seven solvers (six competing and one hors concours) and six tracks, each of which dealing with a class of clauses. This report describes the organization of CHC-COMP 2023 and presents its results.

Abstract:We designed and implemented an efficient tough random symmetric 3-SAT generator and propose two deterministic algorithms that efficiently generate 3-SAT instances with a unique solution. We quantify the first algorithms hardness in terms of CPU time, numbers of restarts, decisions, propagations, conflicts and conflicted literals that occur when a solver tries to solve 3-SAT instances. In this experiment, the clause variable ratio was chosen to be around the conventional critical phase transition number 4.24. The experiment shows that instances generated by our generator are significantly harder than instances generated by the Tough K-SAT generator. The two deterministic algorithms generate 3-SAT instances with the number of clauses scaling as 4n, where n is the number of variables, and (n+6), respectively. By combining these two algorithms along with a simple padding algorithm, we prove a hybrid algorithm that can generate n-variable instances with the number of clauses that scale between (n+6) and 7n(n-1)(n-2). Overall, all proposed SAT generators seek to explore unique difficult to solve SAT problems.

Abstract:All solutions SAT (AllSAT for short) is a variant of propositional satisfiability problem. Despite its significance, AllSAT has been relatively unexplored compared to other variants. We thus survey and discuss major techniques of AllSAT solvers. We faithfully implement them and conduct comprehensive experiments using a large number of instances and various types of solvers including one of the few public softwares. The experiments reveal solver's characteristics. Our implemented solvers are made publicly available so that other researchers can easily develop their solver by modifying our codes and compare it with existing methods.

Abstract:SAT problem is a NP-complete. Many SAT benchmarks that come from the different real life SAT problems are proposed to verify the performance of solvers. Our research focuses on the Model RB benchmark which can be mapped by the coloring problem and others. We propose a translating method based on set for Model RB instances of CNF formulas, and a complete search algorithm. We use the weight of clauses based on the set to determine the order of the search. The results show our solver has the best runtime for the mostly instances and is comparable to the best SAT solvers.
Proteus: A Hierarchical Portfolio of Solvers and Transformations

Abstract:In recent years, portfolio approaches to solving SAT problems and CSPs have become increasingly common. There are also a number of different encodings for representing CSPs as SAT instances. In this paper, we leverage advances in both SAT and CSP solving to present a novel hierarchical portfolio-based approach to CSP solving, which we call Proteus, that does not rely purely on CSP solvers. Instead, it may decide that it is best to encode a CSP problem instance into SAT, selecting an appropriate encoding and a corresponding SAT solver. Our experimental evaluation used an instance of Proteus that involved four CSP solvers, three SAT encodings, and six SAT solvers, evaluated on the most challenging problem instances from the CSP solver competitions, involving global and intensional constraints. We show that significant performance improvements can be achieved by Proteus obtained by exploiting alternative view-points and solvers for combinatorial problem-solving.

Abstract:The problem of finding small unsatisfiable cores for SAT formulas has recently received a lot of interest, mostly for its applications in formal verification. However, propositional logic is often not expressive enough for representing many interesting verification problems, which can be more naturally addressed in the framework of Satisfiability Modulo Theories, SMT. Surprisingly, the problem of finding unsatisfiable cores in SMT has received very little attention in the literature. In this paper we present a novel approach to this problem, called the Lemma-Lifting approach. The main idea is to combine an SMT solver with an external propositional core extractor. The SMT solver produces the theory lemmas found during the search, dynamically lifting the suitable amount of theory information to the Boolean level. The core extractor is then called on the Boolean abstraction of the original SMT problem and of the theory lemmas. This results in an unsatisfiable core for the original SMT problem, once the remaining theory lemmas are removed. The approach is conceptually interesting, and has several advantages in practice. In fact, it is extremely simple to implement and to update, and it can be interfaced with every propositional core extractor in a plug-and-play manner, so as to benefit for free of all unsat-core reduction techniques which have been or will be made available. We have evaluated our algorithm with a very extensive empirical test on SMT-LIB benchmarks, which confirms the validity and potential of this approach.

Abstract:This paper describes the Grid Optimization (GO) Competition Challenge 3, focusing on the problem motivation, formulation, solvers submitted by competition entrants, and analysis of the solutions produced. Funded by DOE/ARPA-E and led by a collaboration of national labs and academia members, the GO Competition addresses challenging problems in power systems planning and operations to drive research in advanced solution methods essential for a rapidly evolving electric power sector. Challenge 3 targets a multi-period unit commitment problem, incorporating AC power modeling and topology switching to reflect the dynamic grid management techniques required for future power systems. The competition results offer significant benefits to both researchers and industry practitioners. For researchers, it fosters innovation, encouraging the development of new algorithms to address the complexities of modern power systems. For industry practitioners, the competition drives the creation of more efficient and reliable computational tools, directly improving grid management practices. This collaboration bridges the gap between theory and practical implementation, advancing the field in meaningful ways. Abstract:Hashiwokakero, or simply Hashi, is a Japanese single-player puzzle played on a rectangular grid with no standard size. Some cells of the grid contain a circle, called island, with a number inside it ranging from one to eight. The remaining positions of the grid are empty. The player must connect all of the islands by drawing a series of horizontal or vertical bridges between them, respecting a series of rules: the number of bridges incident to an island equals the number indicated in the circle, at most two bridges are incident to any side of an island, bridges cannot cross each other or pass through islands, and each island must eventually be reachable from any other island. In this paper, we present some complexity results and relationships between Hashi and well-known graph theory problems. We give a formulation of the problem by means of an integer linear mathematical programming model, and apply a branch-and-cut algorithm to solve the model in which connectivity constraints are dynamically generated. We also develop a puzzle generator. Our experiments on 1440 Hashi puzzles show that the algorithm can consistently solve hard puzzles with up to 400 islands.

Heuristic Reasoning on Graph and Game Complexity of Sudoku

Abstract:The Sudoku puzzle has achieved worldwide popularity recently, and attracted great attention of the computational intelligence community. Sudoku is always considered as Satisfiability Problem or Constraint Satisfaction Problem. In this paper, we propose to focus on the essential graph structure underlying the Sudoku puzzle. First, we formalize Sudoku as a graph. Then a solving algorithm based on heuristic reasoning on the graph is proposed. The related r-Reduction theorem, inference theorem and their properties are proved, providing the formal basis for developments of Sudoku solving systems. In order to evaluate the difficulty levels of puzzles, a quantitative measurement of the complexity level of Sudoku puzzles based on the graph structure and information theory is proposed. Experimental results show that all the puzzles can be solved fast using the proposed heuristic reasoning, and that the proposed game complexity metrics can discriminate difficulty levels of puzzles perfectly.

Abstract:The 2024 PACE Challenge focused on the One-Sided Crossing Minimization (OCM) problem, which aims to minimize edge crossings in a bipartite graph with a fixed order in one partition and a free order in the other. We describe our OCM solver submission that utilizes various reduction rules for OCM and, for the heuristic track, employs local search approaches as well as techniques to escape local minima. The exact and parameterized solver uses an ILP formulation and branch & bound to solve an equivalent Feedback Arc Set instance.
