Abstract:A mathematical model is developed to create Sudoku puzzles with different difficulty levels.We first creatively utilize the puzzle-solving techniques to create a complete Sudoku grid which greatly reduce its complexity.Based on the reduction rules of the solving methods,we optimize the search in the process of constructing a complete Sudoku grid. Then some numbers of a complete Sudoku grid must be removed to create a puzzle.In the process,the puzzles-solving methods can guarantee the puzzle has unique solution.Based on the principle of human first,we reasonably rate the difficulty level of a puzzle by the solving methods people used frequently.According to the rating system,puzzle of different difficulty levels are developed.

Abstract:Sudoku is a popular combinatorial puzzle. A new method of solving Sudoku is presented, which involves formulating a puzzle as a special type of transportation problem. This model allows one to solve puzzles with more than one solution, keeping the constraints of the problem fixed, and simply changing a cost matrix between solutions.

Abstract:The Sudoku puzzle has achieved worldwide popularity recently, and attracted great attention of the computational intelligence community. Sudoku is always considered as Satisfiability Problem or Constraint Satisfaction Problem. In this paper, we propose to focus on the essential graph structure underlying the Sudoku puzzle. First, we formalize Sudoku as a graph. Then a solving algorithm based on heuristic reasoning on the graph is proposed. The related r-Reduction theorem, inference theorem and their properties are proved, providing the formal basis for developments of Sudoku solving systems. In order to evaluate the difficulty levels of puzzles, a quantitative measurement of the complexity level of Sudoku puzzles based on the graph structure and information theory is proposed. Experimental results show that all the puzzles can be solved fast using the proposed heuristic reasoning, and that the proposed game complexity metrics can discriminate difficulty levels of puzzles perfectly.

Abstract:In our paper, we set four levels of difficulty for Sudoku puzzles: Easy, Mild, Hard, Very hard. And we add points to every level, which the number of points is due to algorithms of varying difficulty. Such as generating a full puzzle, removing some of the cells, solving the puzzle and Single-Solution are discussed, at last, we give a mathematical model to ensure unique solution.

Abstract:Sudoku is a widely popular $\mathcal{NP}$-Complete combinatorial puzzle whose prospects for studying human computation have recently received attention, but the algorithmic hardness of Sudoku solving is yet largely unexplored. In this paper, we study the statistical mechanical properties of random Sudoku grids, showing that puzzles of varying sizes attain a hardness peak associated with a critical behavior in the constrainedness of random instances. In doing so, we provide the first description of a Sudoku \emph{freezing} transition, showing that the fraction of backbone variables undergoes a phase transition as the density of pre-filled cells is calibrated. We also uncover a variety of critical phenomena in the applicability of Sudoku elimination strategies, providing explanations as to why puzzles become boring outside the typical range of clue densities adopted by Sudoku publishers. We further show that the constrainedness of Sudoku puzzles can be understood in terms of the informational (Shannon) entropy of their solutions, which only increases up to the critical point where variables become frozen. Our findings shed light on the nature of the $k$-coloring transition when the graph topology is fixed, and are an invitation to the study of phase transition phenomena in problems defined over \emph{alldifferent} constraints. They also suggest advantages to studying the statistical mechanics of popular $\mathcal{NP}$-Hard puzzles, which can both aid the design of hard instances and help understand the difficulty of human problem solving.

Abstract:This paper presents a systematic method to solve difficult 9 x 9 Sudoku puzzles by hand. While computer algorithms exist to solve these puzzles, these algorithms are not good for human's to use because they involve too many steps and require too much memory. For humans, all one can find in the literature are individual tricks, which used together in ad hoc ways can be used to solve some puzzles--but not all. To the author's knowledge, a systematic procedure made up of well-defined steps that can be carried out by hand and solve all puzzles has not been devised. This paper proposes one such technique--the "minuet" method. It is based on a new system of markings and a new way of simplifying the puzzles that can be easily carried out by hand--or by computer. The author has solved hundreds of puzzles of the most difficult kind ("evil" in Sudoku's parlance) and never found one that could not be solved. The average time to solve one of these puzzles is slightly over 1 hour. It is conjectured that this method can solve all well-posed 9 x 9 puzzles. The method's distinguishing feature is a "minuet" strategy that is applied when the puzzle cannot be further simplified with basic tricks. The strategy consists in concurrently developing two potential solutions, sometimes alone and sometimes in concert as if they were dancing a minuet.
A solver of single-agent stochastic puzzle: A case study with Minesweeper

Abstract:People have enjoyed solving puzzles for decades because of the challenge and the satisfaction derived from solving problems. However, although previous researches focused on the puzzle's complexity, strategy, and solving automatically, few studies worked on sorting out puzzles from a solvability way related to the stochastic elements among the solving process. The contribution of the study is twofold. Firstly, a single-agent stochastic puzzle definition is established via Minesweeper testbed, a well-known puzzle synonymous with Microsoft Windows. Secondly, this study proposes an artificial intelligence (AI) solver based on the obtained information on the board, called the 'PAFG' strategy, which stands for the primary reasoning, the advanced reasoning, the first action strategy, and the guessing strategy. The first two strategies take advantage of knowledge-based rules and linear system transformation (Gauss-Jordan elimination algorithms) to determine the probability of making a move independently. The last two strategies explore the beginning and ways to determine hidden puzzle states to enhance the winning rate of the AI solver. The experimental simulation of various configurations and the AI solver with PAFG strategy yielded a high-level winning rate of 96.4%, 86.3%, and 45.6% for the 9×9|10, 16×16|40, and 16×30|99 Minesweeper board configuration, which is comparable to the state of the art study. Thus, such an AI solver could contribute to classifying single-agent stochastic puzzles and establishing the boundary of the puzzle-solving and game-playing paradigm.

Exact Method for Generating Strategy-Solvable Sudoku Clues

Abstract:A Sudoku puzzle often has a regular pattern in the arrangement of initial digits and it is typically made solvable with known solving techniques, called strategies. In this paper, we consider the problem of generating such Sudoku instances. We introduce a rigorous framework to discuss solvability for Sudoku instances with respect to strategies. This allows us to handle not only known strategies but also general strategies under a few reasonable assumptions. We propose an exact method for determining Sudoku clues for a given set of clue positions that is solvable with a given set of strategies. This is the first exact method except for a trivial brute-force search. Besides the clue generation, we present an application of our method to the problem of determining the minimum number of strategy-solvable Sudoku clues. We conduct experiments to evaluate our method, varying the position and the number of clues at random. Our method terminates within $1$ minutes for many grids. However, as the number of clues gets closer to $20$, the running time rapidly increases and exceeds the time limit set to $600$ seconds. We also evaluate our method for several instances with $17$ clue positions taken from known minimum Sudokus to see the efficiency for deciding unsolvability.

In this study, we propose the first cP system solution to generalised Sudoku puzzles with m x m cells grouped in m blocks. Abstract:Constraint satisfaction problems are considered one of the basic literatures in artificial intelligence. In this paper we focus on the typical structure of solution space of the constraint satisfaction problem. By analyzing the decision correlations among variables, a novel structure of the organization of solution space named interactive chain is proposed. Furthermore, taking k-SAT problem and massive algebraic system model as examples, we calculate the fraction of variables belonging to the interactive chain respectively by techniques of dynamical analysis. This type of structure is supposed to be helpful to explore the origin of computational complexity and design more efficient search algorithms for constraint satisfaction problems.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the popular Sudoku problem. We proposed a warm restart strategy for solving Sudoku puzzles, based on the sparse optimization technique. Furthermore, we defined a new difficulty level for Sudoku puzzles. The efficiency of the proposed method is tested using a dataset of Sudoku puzzles, and the numerical results show that the accurate recovery rate can be enhanced from 84%+ to 99%+ using the L1 sparse optimization method.

Abstract:This paper deals with a generalized Sudoku problem and investigates the unicity of a given solution. We introduce constraint sets, which is a generalization of the rows, columns and blocks of a classical Sudoku puzzle. The unicity property is characterized by three different properties. We describe unicity by permutations, by unicity cells and by rectangles. These terms are defined in this paper and are illustrated with examples. Throughout this paper we are not concerned with the existence of a solution.

Abstract:Puzzles can be regarded as problem-solving games, in which players have to solve the obstacle they confront. Solving puzzles helps players to foster logical thinking and to facilitate problem-solving strategies. In this paper, we base on four puzzle games, magic square, jigsaw puzzle, sudoku, and kakuro, and then we design a number puzzle game, called number jigsaw puzzle (NJP). In solving NJP, players could construct their problem-solving strategies according to their previous knowledge. A pilot study was conducted to investigate what strategies the players would use in solving NJP. The result shows that the five different strategies had been found in the pilot study.

Abstract:Challenges for physical solitaire puzzle games are typically designed in advance by humans and limited in number. Alternatively, some games incorporate rules for stochastic setup, where the game board is randomly configured before the challenge is solved. These setup rules greatly increase the number of possible challenges, but can often generate unsolvable or uninteresting challenges. To better understand the compromises involved in minimizing undesirable challenges, we examine three games where component design choices can influence the stochastic nature of the resulting challenge generation algorithms. We evaluate the effect of these components and algorithms on challenge solvability and challenge engagement. We find that algorithms which control randomness through entangling components based on subelements of the puzzle mechanics can generate interesting challenges with a high probability of being solvable.

Abstract:Sudoku problem has been proved to be an NP complete problem.We use a distributed potential game method to solve the problem.Firstly, the utility function of the problem is established and the Sudoku problem is proved to be able to convert to a potential game model, and then the learning rule is used to gradually optimise the status of the players in order to achieve the optimal state of potential game which is Nash equilibrium point.Meanwhile, most of the existing research results of potential game are limited to computer simulation.We present a game implementation of Sudoku problem in physical form.Participants in the process of physical game are embodied by three mobile phones.Experimental results show that the new solution can converge quickly.

Abstract:Interlocking puzzles are intriguing geometric games where the puzzle pieces are held together based on their geometric arrangement, preventing the puzzle from falling apart. High-level-of-difficulty, or simply high-level, interlocking puzzles are a subclass of interlocking puzzles that require multiple moves to take out the first subassembly from the puzzle. Solving a high-level interlocking puzzle is a challenging task since one has to explore many different configurations of the puzzle pieces until reaching a configuration where the first subassembly can be taken out. Designing a high-level interlocking puzzle with a user-specified level of difficulty is even harder since the puzzle pieces have to be interlocking in all the configurations before the first subassembly is taken out. In this paper, we present a computational approach to design high-level interlocking puzzles. The core idea is to represent all possible configurations of an interlocking puzzle as well as transitions among these configurations using a rooted, undirected graph called a disassembly graph and leverage this graph to find a disassembly plan that requires a minimal number of moves to take out the first subassembly from the puzzle. At the design stage, our algorithm iteratively constructs the geometry of each puzzle piece to expand the disassembly graph incrementally, aiming to achieve a user-specified level of difficulty. We show that our approach allows efficient generation of high-level interlocking puzzles of various shape complexities, including new solutions not attainable by state-of-the-art approaches.

Abstract:Many of the famous single-player games, commonly called puzzles, can be shown to be NP-Complete. Indeed, this class of complexity contains hundreds of puzzles, since people particularly appreciate completing an intractable puzzle, such as Sudoku, but also enjoy the ability to check their solution easily once it’s done. For this reason, using constraint programming is naturally suited to solve them. In this paper, we focus on logic puzzles described in the Ludii general game system and we propose using the XCSP formalism in order to solve them with any CSP solver.

Abstract:Dissection puzzles require assembling a common set of pieces into multiple distinct forms. Existing works focus on creating 2D dissection puzzles that form primitive or naturalistic shapes. Unlike 2D dissection puzzles that could be supported on a tabletop surface, 3D dissection puzzles are preferable to be steady by themselves for each assembly form. In this work, we aim at computationally designing steady 3D dissection puzzles. We address this challenging problem with three key contributions. First, we take two voxelized shapes as inputs and dissect them into a common set of puzzle pieces, during which we allow slightly modifying the input shapes, preferably on their internal volume, to preserve the external appearance. Second, we formulate a formal model of generalized interlocking for connecting pieces into a steady assembly using both their geometric arrangements and friction. Third, we modify the geometry of each dissected puzzle piece based on the formal model such that each assembly form is steady accordingly. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on a wide variety of shapes, compare it with the state-of-the-art on 2D and 3D examples, and fabricate some of our designed puzzles to validate their steadiness.
