Abstract:In this document, we introduce XCSP3-core, a subset of XCSP3 that allows us to represent constraint satisfaction/optimization problems. The interest of XCSP3-core is multiple: (i) focusing on the most popular frameworks (CSP and COP) and constraints, (ii) facilitating the parsing process by means of dedicated XCSP3-core parsers written in Java and C++ (using callback functions), (iii) and defining a core format for comparisons (competitions) of constraint solvers.

XCSP3: An Integrated Format for Benchmarking Combinatorial Constrained Problems

Abstract:We propose a major revision of the format XCSP 2.1, called XCSP3, to build integrated representations of combinatorial constrained problems. This new format is able to deal with mono/multi optimization, many types of variables, cost functions, reification, views, annotations, variable quantification, distributed, probabilistic and qualitative reasoning. The new format is made compact, highly readable, and rather easy to parse. Interestingly, it captures the structure of the problem models, through the possibilities of declaring arrays of variables, and identifying syntactic and semantic groups of constraints. The number of constraints is kept under control by introducing a limited set of basic constraint forms, and producing almost automatically some of their variations through lifting, restriction, sliding, logical combination and relaxation mechanisms. As a result, XCSP3 encompasses practically all constraints that can be found in major constraint solvers developed by the CP community. A website, which is developed conjointly with the format, contains many models and series of instances. The user can make sophisticated queries for selecting instances from very precise criteria. The objective of XCSP3 is to ease the effort required to test and compare different algorithms by providing a common test-bed of combinatorial constrained instances.

Abstract:CHC-COMP 2023 is the sixth edition of the Competition of Solvers for Constrained Horn Clauses. The competition was run in April 2023 and the results were presented at the 10th Workshop on Horn Clauses for Verification and Synthesis held in Paris, France, on April 23, 2023. This edition featured seven solvers (six competing and one hors concours) and six tracks, each of which dealing with a class of clauses. This report describes the organization of CHC-COMP 2023 and presents its results.

Abstract:This volume contains the proceedings of ICE'24, the 17th Interaction and Concurrency Experience, which was held on Friday 21th June 2024 at the University of Groningen in Groningen, The Netherlands, as a satellite workshop of DisCoTec 2024. The ICE workshop series features a distinguishing review and selection procedure: PC members are encouraged to interact, anonymously, with authors. The 2024 edition of ICE included double blind reviewing of original research papers, in order to increase fairness and avoid bias in reviewing. Each paper was reviewed by three PC members, and altogether 3 papers were accepted for publication plus 1 oral communication, which was accepted for presentation at the workshop. We were proud to host one invited talk, by Jorge A. Pérez. The abstract of his talk is included in this volume, together with the final versions of the research papers, which take into account the discussion at the workshop and during the review process.

Abstract:Spatial concurrent constraint programming (SCCP) is an algebraic model of spatial modalities in constrained-based process calculi; it can be used to reason about spatial information distributed among the agents of a system. This work presents an executable rewriting logic semantics of SCCP with extrusion (i.e., process mobility) that uses rewriting modulo SMT, a novel technique that combines the power of term rewriting, matching algorithms, and SMT-solving. In this setting, constraints are encoded as formulas in a theory with a satisfaction relation decided by an SMT solver, while the topology of the spatial hierarchy is encoded as part of the term structure of symbolic states. By being executable, the rewriting logic specification offers support for the inherent symbolic and challenging task of reachability analysis in the constrained-based model. The approach is illustrated with examples about the automatic verification of fault-tolerance, consistency, and privacy in distributed spatial and hierarchical systems.

Abstract:In this article, we present an overview of the 2023 International Planning Competition. It featured five distinct tracks designed to assess cutting‐edge methods and explore the frontiers of planning within these settings: the classical (deterministic) track, the numeric track, the Hierarchical Task Networks (HTN) track, the learning track, and the probabilistic and reinforcement learning track. Each of these tracks evaluated planning methodologies through one or more subtracks, with the goal of pushing the boundaries of current planner performance. To achieve this objective, the competition introduced a combination of well‐established challenges and entirely novel ones. Within this article, each track offers an exploration of its historical context, justifies its relevance within the planning landscape, discusses emerging domains and trends, elucidates the evaluation methodology, and ultimately presents the results.

Abstract:Many of the famous single-player games, commonly called puzzles, can be shown to be NP-Complete. Indeed, this class of complexity contains hundreds of puzzles, since people particularly appreciate completing an intractable puzzle, such as Sudoku, but also enjoy the ability to check their solution easily once it’s done. For this reason, using constraint programming is naturally suited to solve them. In this paper, we focus on logic puzzles described in the Ludii general game system and we propose using the XCSP formalism in order to solve them with any CSP solver.

Abstract:We propose in this article a framework for compilation of quantified constraint satisfaction problems (QCSP). We establish the semantics of this formalism by an interpretation to a QCSP. We specify an algorithm to compile a QCSP embedded into a search algorithm and based on the inductive semantics of QCSP. We introduce an optimality property and demonstrate the optimality of the interpretation of the compiled QCSP.

Abstract:Time-related optimization problems are very hard to solve. Scheduling covers a subcategory of such problems where the goal is to place events in time. The discretization of time triggers a rapid growth of possible placements, leading to large search spaces. While scheduling problems were already computationally solved two decades ago, large real-world sized instances seemed to be out of reach back then. The recent gain of computational power brought by modern computers is not large enough to counter the combinatorial explosion of scheduling problems. However, with the recent developments of these two last decades, new promising resolution techniques have emerged. One of these techniques that will be at the core of this thesis is Constraint Programming (CP). This paradigm allows to express declaratively discrete constrained optimization problems. This thesis achieves two main goals. First, we design new abstractions and techniques to enrich the set of tools CP can use to solve Scheduling problems. Second, we prove that CP is able to solve large instances of real-world scheduling problems in short amounts of time. Several new scheduling abstractions for CP are introduced in this thesis. The two most important ones are the conception of two new propagation procedures useful for time-related problems. Propagation is a mechanism of CP that allows to remove parts of the search space that are provably unfeasible, i.e., that do not contain any feasible solutions. The first propagation procedure introduced performs ForwardChecking propagation for the Nested Global Cardinality Constraint

Investigating Constraint Programming for Real World Industrial Test Laboratory Scheduling

Abstract:In this paper we deal with a complex real world scheduling problem closely related to the well-known Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP). The problem concerns industrial test laboratories in which a large number of tests has to be performed by qualified personnel using specialised equipment, while respecting deadlines and other constraints. We present different constraint programming models and search strategies for this problem. Our approaches are evaluated using CP solvers and a MIP solver on a set of generated instances of different sizes. With our best approach we could find feasible and several optimal solutions for instances that are generated based on real-world test laboratory problems.

A Multicore Tool for Constraint Solving

Abstract:*** To appear in IJCAI 2015 proceedings *** In Constraint Programming (CP), a portfolio solver uses a variety of different solvers for solving a given Constraint Satisfaction / Optimization Problem. In this paper we introduce sunny-cp2: the first parallel CP portfolio solver that enables a dynamic, cooperative, and simultaneous execution of its solvers in a multicore setting. It incorporates state-of-the-art solvers, providing also a usable and configurable framework. Empirical results are very promising. sunny-cp2 can even outperform the performance of the oracle solver which always selects the best solver of the portfolio for a given problem.

Modular Constraint Solver Cooperation via Abstract Interpretation

Abstract:Cooperation among constraint solvers is difficult because different solving paradigms have different theoretical foundations. Recent works have shown that abstract interpretation can provide a unifying theory for various constraint solvers. In particular, it relies on abstract domains which capture constraint languages as ordered structures. The key insight of this paper is viewing cooperation schemes as abstract domains combinations. We propose a modular framework in which solvers and cooperation schemes can be seamlessly added and combined. This differs from existing approaches such as SMT where the cooperation scheme is usually fixed (e.g., Nelson-Oppen). We contribute to two new cooperation schemes: (i) interval propagators completion that allows abstract domains to exchange bound constraints, and (ii) delayed product which exchanges over-approximations of constraints between two abstract domains. Moreover, the delayed product is based on delayed goal of logic programming, and it shows that abstract domains can also capture control aspects of constraint solving. Finally, to achieve modularity, we propose the shared product to combine abstract domains and cooperation schemes. Our approach has been fully implemented, and we provide various examples on the flexible job shop scheduling problem. Under consideration for acceptance in TPLP.
