Abstract:A starburst luminogen (THPSTPA) consisting of a triphenylamine core and 1,1,2,3,4,5-hexaphenylsilole peripheries is designed and synthesized. Whereas it is weakly luminescent when molecularly dissolved in good solvent, it becomes highly emissive when aggregated in poor solvent, exhibiting a novel phenomenon of aggregation-induced emission (AIE). THPSTPA is morphologically and thermally stable, showing high glass transition and thermal degradation temperatures at 150 and 303 degrees C, respectively. The emission of its aggregates can be quenched exponentially by picric acid with a quenching constant up to similar to 7.0 x 10(4) L mol(-1), suggesting that it can work as a sensitive chemosensor for explosive detection. Revealing the Mechanism of Photoluminescence from Single Gold Nanospheres by Defocused Imaging

Abstract:The mechanism for the photoluminescence (PL) emission from gold nanoparticles has attracted considerable attention for many years. However, there is an important gap between small nanoclusters (similar to 2 nm) and larger plasmonic particles (similar to 50 nm). In this work, using defocused imaging technique, we investigate the PL properties of gold nanospheres (15-20 nm in diameter) on a single particle level. Photoblinking and photobleaching phenomena are both observed. We notice that although these nanospheres can support surface plasmon resonance at similar to 515 nm, they emit at similar to 630 nm (excited by 532 nm), which is obviously plasmon-independent. The observed defocused images (DIs) exhibit isotropy first and then either transform into anisotropy or vanish rapidly. Surprisingly, the Dls can change their emission pattern within one single nanosphere during the tracing time. All these PL properties suggest a multiple-dipole emission model. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images demonstrate that these nanospheres are polycrystalline containing multiple small crystal domains (similar to 3 nm). We believe that these small domains divide the particle into different clusters and give rise to the photoblinking behavior and rotary DIs. The presented PL mechanism links gold nanoclusters and single-crystal nanorods, which could be helpful in understanding the origins of photoblinking and the luminescent properties from metallic nanoparticles. In addition, these water-soluble gold nanospheres provide new opportunities for biological labels and light-emitting sources in nanophotonics.

Abstract:Abstract Gold mobilization, transfer, and concentration in the Earth’s crust are controlled by hydrothermal sulfur- and chloride-bearing fluids. Yet the exact chemical identity, structure, and stability of Au-bearing species and, in particular, the respective contributions of the sulfide (HS−) and trisulfur ion (S3⋅−) ligands to Au transport lack direct in situ evidence. Here we employed high energy resolution fluorescence detection X-ray absorption spectroscopy (HERFD-XAS) on aqueous sulfate/sulfide/S3⋅−-bearing solutions at typical hydrothermal temperatures and pressures (T = 350 °C, P = 600 bar) to reveal differences in dissolved Au spectral signatures indicative of contrasting fluid-phase Au speciation as a function of acidity and redox conditions. Combined with in situ Au solubility measurements and quantum-chemical and thermodynamic modeling, our spectroscopic data provide direct evidence for the Au(HS)S3− and Au(HS)2− complexes predominant at acidic-to-neutral and alkaline conditions, respectively. Our findings thus directly confirm a recent speciation scheme for Au in aqueous S-bearing fluids established using less direct methods, and highlight an important role of the trisulfur ion in gold mobilization and concentration in hydrothermal-magmatic deposits associated with subduction zones. More generally, our results show that HERFD-XAS enables the identification of structural and coordination features in metal complexes virtually unresolvable using classical XAS techniques. By avoiding limitations of less direct techniques, our integrated high-resolution spectroscopic approach opens perspectives for studies of the speciation and solubility of gold and other metals in high T-P fluids, and potentially silicate melts, inaccessible to direct observation in nature.

Abstract:A carbazole-based gold(I) complex 1 has been successfully synthesized. Its structure was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffractometry. Its aggregation-induced emission behavior was studied by ultraviolet/visible, photoluminescence spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope. Its solid-state mechanochromic and thin-film vapochromic luminescence behaviors were also investigated by photoluminescence spectroscopy. The results demonstrated that luminogen 1 showed obvious aggregation-induced emission property. Furthermore, 1 also exhibited reversible high-contrast mechanochromic and vapochromic luminescence behaviors. More interestingly, 1 can emit persistent room-temperature phosphorescence with a solid-state emission lifetime up to 86.84 ms, which is the highest lifetime value among all the reported gold(I) complexes so far. To the best of our knowledge, the gold(I) complex is the first example of an AIE-active luminogen with persistent room-temperature phosphorescence, reversible mechanochromism and vapochromism characteristics. Abstract:This study explores the vapochromic and vapoluminescent behaviors of [Pt(tpy)Cl]PF6 host molecules (tpy = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine) under acetonitrile (CH3CN) vapor guest, challenging the conventional view that these phenomena arise solely from direct host-guest interactions. Our findings reveal a cooperative mechanism where mechanochromic surface perturbations prime the Pt(II) host for guest incorporation, leading to initial color and luminescence changes prior to significant structural alterations. While the color transition between the yellow [Pt(tpy)Cl]PF6 form and the red/orange [Pt(tpy)Cl]PF6•CH3CN form is reversible, repeated vapor cycling induces a loss of crystallinity, as indicated by diffraction peak broadening and emission shifts. Scanning electron microscopy analyses show mechanical deformations like bending and surface pitting, emphasizing the role of vapomechanical stress in altering optical properties. These insights highlight the need for integrated design strategies in developing robust vapochromic materials for gas sensing applications.

Room-Temperature Persistent Phosphorescence of Aggregated Gold Nanoclusters under Molecular Crystal Confinements

Abstract:We report color-tunable and solvent-processable persistent fluorescence to phosphorescence switching at room temperature by doping gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) inside molecular crystals. This provides a significant insight into the tunability of the photoluminescence property of the dopant depending on the crystal environment and compactness of confinement, with the possibility of energy transfer from crystal to aggregated AuNCs. For test cases, we have doped histidine-stabilized AuNCs (HIS-AuNCs) inside histidine (HIS-AuNCs-HIS) and isophthalic acid (HIS-AuNCs-IPA) crystals, respectively, and glutathione-stabilized AuNCs (GSH-AuNCs) inside histidine crystals (GSH-AuNCs-HIS). The maximal phosphorescence decay time recorded for crystal doped aggregated AuNCs was 9.38 ms, and the photoluminescence quantum yield value was measured as 25%. The possible energy states and potential interactions between aggregated NCs and host crystals were accounted for through density functional theory calculations and docking techniques, respectively. This finding opens new possibilities for designing and producing color-tunable persistent AuNC-based luminous crystals for multilayer information encryption, display, and biological applications.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles emit broad-band upconverted luminescence upon irradiation with pulsed infrared laser radiation. Although the phenomenon is widely observed, considerable disagreement still exists concerning the underlying physics - most notably over the applicability of concepts such as multiphoton absorption, inelastic scattering, and interband and intraband electronic transitions. Here, we study single particles and small clusters of particles by employing a spectrally resolved power-law analysis of the irradiation-dependent emission as a sensitive probe of these physical models. Two regimes of emission are identified: at low irradiance levels of kW/cm2, the emission follows a well-defined integer-exponent power law suggestive of a multiphoton process. However, at higher irradiance levels of several kW/cm2, the nonlinearity exponent itself depends on the photon energy detected, a tell-tale signature of a radiating heated electron gas. We show that in this regime, the experiments are incompatible with both interband transitions and inelastic light scattering as the cause the luminescence, while they are compatible with the notion of luminescence linked to intraband transitions.

Abstract:Metal photoluminescence is of great interest as a probe for studying excited charges in plasmonic nanostructures. However, the nature of the emission process is still strongly debated. Here, we employ emission spectroscopy with various excitation wavelengths to investigate the excitation pathway in films of gold nanoflowers. The obtained data provide spectroscopic evidence that the luminescence is dominated by Auger-excited intraband emission from gold nanoflowers. While the excitation spectrum clearly demonstrates absorption by interband transitions, the emission spectra could be unequivocally assigned to intraband recombination. Our conclusion is corroborated by a simulation of the wavelength-dependent inter- and intraband emission, that excludes the interband recombination as a source for the observed emission. These results suggest that Auger excitation is a promising route to generate energetic "hot" electrons with energies substantially above the Fermi level. Exploiting this effect could strongly benefit applications for nano-luminescent probes and the progress of plasmon catalysis.

Abstract:We demonstrate engineering of the spectral content and polarization of photoluminescence (PL) from arrayed gold nanoparticles atop a subwavelength-thin dielectric spacer and optically-thick gold film, a configuration that supports gap-surface plasmon resonances (GSPRs). Choice of shapes and dimensions of gold nanoparticles influences the GSPR wavelength and polarization characteristics, thereby allowing us to enhance and spectrally mold the plasmon-assisted PL while simultaneously controlling its polarization. In order to understand the underlying physics behind the plasmon-enhanced PL, we develop a simple model that faithfully reproduces all features observed in our experiments showing also good quantitative agreement for the PL enhancement

Abstract:Despite its fame as a chemically inert noble metal, gold (alloys) may suffer degradation under specific scenarios. Here, we show evidence of electrochemically corroded gilded tin plasterwork in the Alhambra (Granada, Spain) driving spontaneously made gold nanospheres with the optimal size (ca. 70 nm) to impart purple color at the surface. Purple gold on damaged artworks is found sparsely, and its formation is not fully explained yet. We prove that our decayed gold/silver-tin ornament is due to sequential/coexisting galvanic corrosion, differential aeration corrosion, and dealloying of nonperfectly bonded and defect-based metals. Damage is enhanced by exposure to a chloride-rich atmosphere. A white gypsum coat applied during the 19th century to overlap the unaesthetic gilding assists observation of the gold-based purple color. Our work demonstrates gold dissolution, millimetric migration, physical translocation, and deposition as secondary pure gold nanospheres over a centurial time scale under natural environmental conditions.

Abstract:Recent experiments have shown that microporous gold can be obtained via the oxidative dealloying of Au(Ag)-tellurides such as calaverite (AuTe2), krennerite (Au3AgTe8), and sylvanite [(Au,Ag)2Te4] under mild hydrothermal conditions. The same Au textures have been found in natural gold-telluride ores from the Late Miocene epithermal Aginskoe Au-Ag-Te deposit in Kamchatka, Russia. This confirms that natural microporous gold can form via the replacement of telluride minerals. This replacement may take place under hydrothermal conditions, e.g., during the late stage of the ore-depositing event, explaining the wide distribution of “mustard gold” in some deposits. At Aginskoe, the oxidation of Au-tellurides appears to have resulted only in local redistribution of Au and Te, because the associated oxidation of chalcopyrite scavenged the excess Te, inhibiting the crystallization of secondary Te minerals more than a few micrometers in size. Such cryptic mobility may explain the lack of reported secondary Te minerals in many Te-bearing deposits.

Abstract:A new series of isostructural, brilliantly luminescent gold-silver complexes having the formula [Au3(mu3-E)Ag(PPh2py)3](BF4)2 where E = O, S, Se and Ph2Ppy = 2-diphenylphosphinopyridine has been synthesized and characterized. The structural core of these complexes is a Au3Ag metallophilically linked tetrahedron with a group-16 atom functioning as a mu3-ligand capping the three gold atoms. In the solid state, pairs of clusters are joined by two unsupported aurophilic interactions. The emission energy changes strikingly in going from O (blue) to S (yellow) and Se (orange). The luminescence from the E = O system is the first to be reported for a gold(I) oxo system. Additionally, the luminescent 4-methylpyridyl analogue with E = S has been prepared and structurally characterized. For E = S, Se, the change in emission energy with mu3-bridging atom provides a sound basis for an LMMCT assignment of the excited state while lifetime measurements support its spin-forbidden nature. Frozen glass measurements indicate the presence of a higher-energy emitting state for these systems, and for the E = O system, either LMMCT or metal-centered cluster-based emission can be proposed.

Abstract:We have observed enormous shifts of the optical-absorption peak during the reduction of gold-sulfide particles (${\mathrm{Au}}_{2}$S) to gold particles. A two-step colloidal method is used for the nanoparticle synthesis. We can explain our findings by assuming the colloidal particles have a gold coating on the surface. This is also consistent with our transmission-electron-microscopy figures, displaying a core-shell structure, and electron-diffraction data. The optical-absorption peak initially shifts toward the red and at later times toward the blue wavelengths. By controlling the initial size of the gold-sulfide particles, the resonance shift is correlated with a theoretical model that includes both quantum confinement and the resonance effects (the so-called surface-plasmon resonance). The use of metal-coated particles with a nonmetallic core material offers two advantages for studying quantum confinement. First, the particles are initially large, and have a large polarizability and consequently a large absorption cross section, and second, the thin metal layer confines the electron in one dimension and can extend itself in the other two dimensions.
