Abstract:Nanocomposites of graphene oxide and gold nanoparticles (GO/GNPs) were synthesized for label-free detections of amino acids. Interactions between the composites and amino acids were investigated by both naked-eye observation and optical absorption spectroscopy. The GO/GNPs composites displayed apparent color changes and absorption spectra changes in presences of amino acids including glutamate, aspartate, and cysteine. The interaction mechanisms of the composites and amino acids were discussed and explored with sulfhydryl groups and non-α-carboxylic groups on the amino acids. Sensing properties of the composites were tested, while pure gold particles were used as the control. The results suggested that the GO/GNPs composites had better linearity and stability in dose-dependent responses to the amino acids than those of the particles, especially in detections for acidic amino acids. Therefore, the nanocomposites platform can provide a convenient and efficient approach for label-free optical detections of important molecules such as amino acids.

Abstract:Graphene oxide is a flexible nanoscale building block, which is contributed to improve the electrical, optical, and chemical properties. Here, gold nanoparticles on graphene oxide substrate were synthesized as sensitive nanoprobes for rapid L-cysteine detection. The smartphone-based system with multimode analysis of red-green-blue (RGB), hue-saturation-value (HSV), hue-saturation-lightness (HSL), and cyan-magenta-yellow-black (CMYK), were proposed for the investigation of interactions between the nanoprobes and L-cysteine. Then, optical absorption spectra were further examined to confirm the concentration characteristics of L-cysteine. Results suggested that gold nanoparticles on graphene oxide substrate had satisfying linearity and stability in dose-dependent responses to L-cysteine detection in the multimode analysis with the limit of detection at 0.06 mu M. Therefore, the smartphone-based nanoprobes system not only equipped with a high resolution camera and a powerful processor, but also was a fully automated device without additional label or complex detection. These features make it to be a convenient and efficient analysis platform for multiple fields, such as clinical application, industrial quality control, environment monitoring, and food assessment.

Abstract:Phosgene is a suffocating toxic gas that seriously threatens human health and public security. In this work, we devised a colorimetric and fluorogenic chemosensor (BDY) for phosgene by using 3,5-dimethyl BODIPY as a fluorescent reporter and o-phenylenediamine as the recognition site. The BDY sensor displayed an obvious color change from yellow to pink in conjugation with a fluorescence turn-on response due to nucleophilic substitution and cyclization reactions with phosgene. BDY could detect phosgene with a rapid response (9 s), low detection limit (14 nM), and outstanding selectivity. Moreover, BDY-loaded test strips were prepared to serve as portable and sensitive kits for real-time visual monitoring phosgene with good performance.

Abstract:As highly toxic and accessible chemical reagents, phosgene and triphosgene have become a serious threat to public safety. So, it is highly desirable to develop facile methods to detect and recognize them. In this article, a novel fluorescent chemosensor, Phos-4, has been constructed with 1,8-naphthalimide as the fluorophore and 2-(2-aminophenyl)imidazol as the recognition sites for discrimination between phosgene and triphosgene in a dual-channel mode for the first time. Owing to the difference in electrophilicity between chlorocarbonyl and trichloromethoxycarbonyl, the sensing reaction of Phos-4 with phosgene undergoes two carbamylations to afford a cyclic product with green fluorescence, and only one carbamylation occurs for triphosgene to form a noncyclic product with blue fluorescence. The sensor Phos-4 exhibits high sensitivity (the limit of detection, 3.2 nM, for phosgene, and 1.9 nM, for triphosgene) and high selectivity in solutions. Furthermore, facile test papers containing Phos-4-embedded nanofibrous membrane have been fabricated by the electrospinning technology. The test papers can provide visual and selective detection of phosgene with a lower limit of detection (42 ppb) and a faster response (≤10 s) in the gas phase over those in solutions. The test paper with Phos-4 is promising to be a practical detection tool of gaseous phosgene.

Abstract:A simple, rapid, sensitive, and selective method was proposed to detect phosgene by solid-phase extraction coupled with ultraviolent diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. First, phosgene reacts with aniline solution to produce N,N-diphenylcarbamide, then nylon membrane was selected as solid-phase material to enrich N,N-diphenylcarbamide and separate it from mixture solution. At last, nylon membrane-concentrated N,N-diphenylcarbamide was measured directly to collect ultraviolent diffuse reflectance spectrum without any elution. Some parameters such as membrane pore, vacuum degree, and volume of sample were optimized. Under the optimal conditions, the relationship between the mass x of phosgene and absorbance y at 257nm was described in a linear equation of y=0.0141x+0.0025 with a squared correlation coefficient of 0.9920, the limit of detection of phosgene was estimated as low as 0.2466 mu g. The developed method was evaluated by applying to detect phosgene content in real samples and comparing with aniline in ultraviolet spectrophotometric method, which is adopted by the standard method of China. The relative errors of two methods were between -7.03% and 3.60%, and the relative standard deviations were from 6.55% to 9.31%, which are comparable to the standard method and verified the feasibility of the current method. These results demonstrated that the proposed method could be applied to the detection of phosgene with good accuracy and precision.

Abstract:The detection of highly toxic chemicals in a convenient, fast, and reliable manner is essential for coping with serious threats to humankind and public security caused by unexpected terrorist attacks and industrial accidents. In this paper, a highly selective fluorescent probe has been constructed through o-phenylenediamine covalently linking to coumarin (o-Pac), which can respond to phosgene in turn-on fluorescence mode. The response time is less than 0.5 min and the detection limit is as low as 3 nM in solutions. More importantly, the sensor exhibits good selectivity to phosgene over triphosgene and various acyl chlorides. Furthermore, a portable test paper has been fabricated with polystyrene membrane containing o-Pac for real-time selective monitoring of phosgene in gas phase.

Abstract:Because of the current shortage of first generation phosgene sensors, increased attention has been given to the development of fluorescent and colorimetric based methods for detecting this toxic substance. In an effort focusing on this issue, we designed the new, second-generation phosgene chemosensor 1 and demonstrated that it undergoes a ring-opening reaction with phosgene in association with color and fluorescent changes with a detection limit of 3.2 ppb. Notably, in comparison with the first-generation sensor RB-OPD, 1 not only undergoes a much faster response toward phosgene with an overall response time within 2 min, but it also generates no byproducts during the sensing process. Finally, sensor 1 embedded nanofibers were successfully fabricated and used for accurate and sensitive detection of phosgene.

Abstract:Phosgene is a highly toxic and readily available chemical. It is necessary to develop simple, rapid and efficient detection methods to protect humans from phosgene. In this work, we constructed three electron donor-acceptor (D-A) fluorescent probes 2a (R = CN at para-position of phenyl), 2b (R = H) and 2c (R = CH3) with 1,8-naph-thalimide as the fluorophore, and 4-position benzoyl hydrazide as a reactive site for phosgene. The fluorescent probes can quickly sense phosgene, accompanying with fluorescence changes, forming the sensing products, oxadiazolone derivatives (3a -3c), via a specific cyclization reaction. The effects of para-substituents on the sensing performance display the highest reactivity for the probe 2a with electron-withdrawing group CN and the lowest for 2c with an electron-donating group CH3. Thus, 2a displays the most rapid response (5 s), the lowest limit of detection (LOD = 1.4 nM), companying with an obvious fluorescence change from green to bright blue in the sensing process, in solutions. Moreover, the test strips were fabricated with polyethylene oxide with 2a, which could detect phosgene in the gas phase with good selectivity and sensitivity below the level of health risk. These results show that 2a is promising to apply in the field-detection of phosgene.

In this investigation, we designed a o-phenylenediamine-pyronin linked dye that is capable of both fluorogenic and colorimetric discrimination between phosgene and the prototypical nerve-agent mimic, diethyl chlorophosphate (DCP) in the solution or gas phase. Moreover, this dye has been used to construct a portable kit that can be employed for real-time monitoring of DCP and phosgene in the field, both in a discriminatory manner, and in a simple and safe way.

Abstract:Phosgene is an important and widely used highly toxic chemical that poses a serious potential threat to public health and property if leaked or abused. Therefore, developing an efficient and convenient detection method for phosgene is of great significance. In this work, we synthesized a novel fluorescent probe, BCyP , based on benzohemicyanine for highly selective and sensitive detection of phosgene in both liquid and gas phases. The probe uses amino alcohol as a specific recognition group for phosgene and does not fluoresce due to the strong intramolecular charge transfer effect (ICT). However, in the presence of phosgene, the amino alcohol part in the probe can form oxazolidinone in situ with phosgene, reducing the ICT effect in the probe molecule and lighting fluorescence, thus realizing the selective phosgene detection. The probe exhibits good specificity towards phosgene, with significant fluorescence enhancement (approximately 400-fold), a remarkable Stokes shift (139 nm), a fast response speed (less than 17 s), and a low detection limit (0.12 ppm). Additionally, we prepared a phosgene detection paper strip loaded with the probe on filter paper and combined it with color recognition software on a smartphone to achieve visual detection of phosgene in the gas phase.

Abstract:Phosgene and its substitutes, diphosgene and triphosgene, are highly toxic and widely used chemicals, so it is necessary to investigate their reactivity and develop facile, sensitive, and specific methods for detecting them. In this work, we have developed a new 1,8-naphthalimide-based fluorescent chemosensor, Phos-2, which exhibits high sensitivity (detection limits: 0.2-0.7 nm), high selectivity to phosgene and its substitutes over nitric oxide (NO), various acyl chlorides, and nerve agent mimics in solutions. Based on investigation of the reaction kinetics of Phos-2 with phosgene and its substitutes, a two-step sensing mechanism was clarified. The second-order rate constants (k2 ) of Phos-2 reveal that the relative rate constants of phosgene, diphosgene, and triphosgene are 40:4:1. Moreover, a Phos-2 test paper has been fabricated as a low-cost, sensitive (≈5 ppm from observation by the naked eye or 0.1 ppm from a measurement), and efficient method for visual detection of a low concentration of phosgene in the gas phase.

Abstract:<p>As a widely used but highly toxic chemical species, phosgene is threatening to human health because of possible accidental leakage during industrial manufacture. Herein, we exploited a turn-on fluorescent sensor F671 for phosgene detection. The exact distance of nitro benzoxadiazole (NBD) and boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) in F671 was changed from 5.027 Å to 15.535 Å after reaction with phosgene, accompanied with obvious fluorescence enhancement, which is attributed to the inhibition of Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) process. The FRET-associated strategy possesses the capacity of detecting phosgene with a rapid response time (<6 s), ultra-sensitivity (LOD = 0.36 nM in solution and 0.14 ppm in gas phase) and remarkable selectivity to phosgene in solutions and in gas phase. Furthermore, the F671-embedded degreasing cotton, has been fabricated to serves as a specific gaseous phosgene device, for facile, selective and visual detection of phosgene gas. Confocal imaging of F671-embedded degreasing cotton displayed increasing emission intensity in the presence of phosgene in both of one-photon and two-photon patterns. It is envisioned that the developed convenient device is a promising tool for phosgene gas detection and quantification in real industrial and environmental applications.</p>

A Simple Colorimetric Sensor Based on Anti-Aggregation of Gold Nanoparticles for Hg2+ Detection

Abstract:A new method has been proposed to realize the visual detection of Hg2+ via anti-aggregation of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). The positively charged Au NPs were prepared using poly(diallyldimethylammonium) chloride (PDDA) as reducer and stabilizer. In the presence of cysteine, the color of Au NPs solution turned from ruby red to royal purple, indicating the aggregation of Au NPs. Owing to the high stability constant of cysteine with Hg2+, the pre-incubation of Hg2+ with cysteine would form Hg2+–cysteine complexes and significantly reduce the concentration of free cysteine molecules, thus the aggregation of Au NPs was interrupted since there was not enough inducer. With the increase of Hg2+ concentration, the color of the Au NPs solution would progress from purple to red, allowing the visual detection of Hg2+ ranging from 5.0×10−8 to 1.0×10−5M, with a detection limit of 2.5×10−8M. The proposed method is convenient, low-cost and free of complex equipment, making it possible to analyze Hg2+ in drinking water, rain water or water extracted air samples.

Abstract:In this study, a novel colorimetric method for rapid, sensitive and low-cost detection of glyphosate was developed using cysteamine-stabilized gold nanoparticles (CS-AuNPs). The CS-AuNPs could be aggregated easily in the presence of glyphosate through electrostatic interaction in acidic medium, resulting in a shift in the surface plasmon band and a consequent color change from red to blue (or purple). Therefore, the content of glyphosate could be determined by monitoring with the naked eyes or a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The detection limit of the present method for glyphosate was 5.88 × 10−8 M, with the linear range of 0.500–7.00 μM. The proposed method is a promising approach for on-site screening of glyphosate content in environmental water samples without using any costly instruments.

Abstract:One simple, sensitive detection method for pesticide prothioconazole based on citrate-capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in one step at room temperature was presented in this study. Prothioconazole could be easily linked onto the AuNPs through a Au-S covalent bond, and AuNPs undergo aggregation via hydrogen bonds formed among prothioconazole molecules. As a result, the color of AuNP solution changes from wine red to royal purple, which could be monitored by naked eyes and UV-vis spectra. This label-free visual detection method could determine prothioconazole with concentrations ranging from 1.33 to 19.99 mu g/L with a detection limit of 0.38 mu g/L (S/N = 3). This method was convenient and free of complex equipment and successfully applied to prothioconazole determination in rice field water where it gave satisfactory recoveries.

Abstract:Leakage and misuse of phosgene , a common and highly hazardous industrial chemical, have always constituted a safety risk. Therefore, it is crucial to develop sensitive detection methods for gaseous phosgene. This work describes the design and development of a new fluorescent dye based on benzohemicyanine, as well as the synthesis of fluorescent probes for the sensitive detection of gaseous phosgene. Due to the excellent intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) effect from the strong electron-donating impact of the o -aminophenol group on benzo hemicyanine, the probe does not emit fluorescence. When the probe reacts with phosgene, the ICT effect is inhibited, and the result exhibits observable green fluorescence, thereby visualizing the response to phosgene. The probe offers exceptional sensitivity, a rapid response, and a low phosgene detection limit. In addition, we developed probe-loaded, portable test strips for the quick and sensitive detection of phosgene in the gas phase. Finally, the constructed probe-loaded test strips were utilized effectively to monitor the simulated phosgene leakage.

For this reason, it is an urgent need to develop facile, fast, and selective detection methods of phosgene. In this Article, we have constructed a highly selective fluorescent sensor o-Pab for phosgene with a BODIPY unit as a fluorophore and o-phenylenediamine as a reactive site. The sensor o-Pab exhibits rapid response (∼15 s) in both colorimetric and turn-on fluorescence modes, high selectivity for phosgene over nerve agent mimics and various acyl chlorides and a low detection limit (2.7 nM) in solutions. In contrast to most undistinguishable sensors reported, o-Pab can react with phosgene but not with its substitutes, triphosgene and biphosgene. The excellent discrimination of o-Pab has been demonstrated to be due to the difference in highly reactive and bifunctional phosgene relative to its substitutes. Furthermore, a facile testing paper has been fabricated with poly(ethylene oxide) immobilizing o-Pab on a filter paper for real-time selective monitoring of phosgene in gaseous phase.

Abstract:A fluorescent probe was developed for the detection of phosgene based on 1,8-naphthalimide, of which o-diaminobenzene was used as the recognition moiety. The probe does not fluoresce due to nonradiative decay. The probe reacts rapidly with phosgene via an intramolecular cyclization reaction, which induces large fluorescence due to increased rigidity in the resulting molecule and a low detection limit (0.23 nM). This probe has excellent selectivity for phosgene against competing interference analytes and, in the form of probe-loaded test paper, is an extremely sensitive method for phosgene sensing in the gas phase below 1 ppm concentrations.
