Abstract:Atomic nuclei are self-organized, many-body quantum systems bound by strong nuclear forces within femtometer-scale space. These complex systems manifest a diverse set of shapes~, traditionally explored via non-invasive spectroscopic techniques at low energies. Their instantaneous shapes, obscured by long-timescale quantum fluctuations, are considered not directly observable at low energy. We introduce a complementary method, collective flow assisted nuclear shape imaging, to image the nuclear global shape by colliding them at ultrarelativistic speeds and analyzing the collective response of outgoing debris. This technique captures a collision-specific snapshot of the spatial matter distribution in the nuclei, which, through the hydrodynamic expansion, leaves imprints on the particle momentum distribution patterns observed in detectors. We benchmark this method in collisions of ground state Uranium-238 nuclei, known for its elongated, axial-symmetric shape. Our findings, while confirming an overall deformation broadly consistent with prior low-energy experiments, also indicate a small deviation from axial symmetry in the nuclear ground state. This approach marks a new way of imaging nuclei, especially those with uncertain shape characteristics, and refines initial conditions in high-energy nuclear collisions. It tackles the important issue of nuclear structure evolution across various energy scales.

Abstract:Optically imaging atomic nuclei is a long-sought goal for scientific and applied research, but it has never been realized so far. We integrate aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), the bremsstrahlung generation of X-ray photons, and the energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopic (EDS) receiving and mapping of the photons into a new microscopy method of optical imaging, by which atomic nuclei of different materials are successfully imaged with X-ray photons. Moreover, this imaging method is shown to be workable with different STEM instruments and be capable of distinguishing atomic nuclei of different elements and resolving imaged size differences of atomic nuclei with the order of magnitude as small as 1 pm. Therefore, it is a general method that can image atomic nuclei and their evolutions in materials science, chemistry and physics.

Abstract:In relativistic heavy-ion collisions, the extractions of properties of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) are hindered by a limited understanding of its initial conditions, where the nuclear structure of the colliding ions play a significant role. In these proceedings, we present the first quantitative demonstration using ``collective flow assisted nuclear shape imaging" method to extract the quadrupole deformation and triaxiality from $^{238}$U using data from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). We achieve this by comparing bulk observables in $^{238}$U+$^{238}$U collisions with nearly spherical $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au collisions. A similar comparative measurement performed in collisions of $^{96}$Ru+$^{96}$Ru and $^{96}$Zr+$^{96}$Zr, suggests the presence of moderate quadrupole deformation of $^{96}$Ru, large octupole deformation of $^{96}$Zr, as well as an apparent neutron skin difference between these two species. The prospect of this nuclear shape imaging method as a novel tool for the study of nuclear structure is also elaborated.

Abstract:The new insights into a) the rapidly varying structures of neutron-rich nuclei up to spins as high as 20+ and 19−, b) the spontaneous fission process itself, and c) modes of cluster radioactivity that have come out of studies of spontaneous fission of 242Pu, 248Cm and 252Cf with large detector arrays are presented. The studies include γ-γ-γ coincidences with the second generation (14–20 Compton-suppressed Ge arrays) and new, third generation (35–45 Compton-suppressed Ge arrays, Gammasphere and Eurogam) gamma-ray detector arrays. The neutron-rich nuclei observed span the full range from superdeformed (β2 ≥ 0.4) double-magic ground states to spherical double-magic nuclei and competing shapes in between. New structure insights include the following: New regions of identical ground state bands to spins of 10+ to 16+ were discovered; one at the sudden onset of large deformation at N=60,62 in both even- and odd-A 98–101Sr, one at midshell N = 64,66 in 108,110Ru, one for N = 88–90 144,146Ba, one for N = 92–94 152,154Nd, and at high spin in 156Nd and also in excited bands in these regions. New shape coexisting structures in both even- and odd-A for A = 96–102 Sr and Zr nuclei are found. Evidence is found in both even-even and odd-A nuclei for a new region of octupole deformation around Z = 56 and N = 86–88. Rapid changes in moments of inertia are observed with changes in Z and N of two units with sudden changes in the moments of inertia associated with band crossings. The levels in many neutron-rich nuclei are observed for the first time. Earlier, plunger studies yielded lifetimes of low spin states and recently the Doppler Shift Line Shape Analysis yielded lifetimes of high spin states. For the first time, direct measurements of yields and neutron multiplicities have been made for five correlated pairs of fission fragments of SrNd, ZrCe, MoBa, RuXe and PdTe nuclei. Neutron multiplicities from 0–10 v emission (10v for the first time) were observed in MoBa correlated pairs with the 0 and 7–10 neutron-emission yields enhanced compared to gross yields for all fragments. The MoBa data provide evidence for two different fission modes. By unfolding the observed MoBa yields, the masses and excitation energies and mass distributions at scission were extracted. These data revealed a new mode involving the high neutron multiplicities that occurs essentially through one pair, 108Mo144Ba, 107Mo145Ba, or 106Mo146Ba or some combination where the 144Ba, 145Ba and/or 146Ba at scission are hyperdeformed with a long-to-short axis ratio of 3:1. The zero-neutron emission channels provide new examples of the cold rearrangements of nucleons in a new type of cluster radioactivity. The cluster radioactivity model predicted the observed enhancements of the zero-neutron channels for odd-A-odd-A nuclei as well as the observed fine structure, that is, the spin distributions of the two fragments. The measurements of intensities and γ-γ-γ coincidences in SF with large detector arrays open a new era in the determination of previously inaccessible properties of neutron-rich nuclei and the fission process.

Abstract:Nuclides sharing the same mass number (isobars) are observed ubiquitously along the stability line. While having nearly identical radii, stable isobars can differ in shape, and present in particular different quadrupole deformations. We show that even small differences in these deformations can be probed by relativistic nuclear collisions experiments, where they manifest as deviations from unity in the ratios of elliptic flow coefficients taken between isobaric systems. Collider experiments with isobars represent, thus, a unique means to obtain quantitative information about the geometric shape of atomic nuclei.

Abstract:AbstractWeapons-grade uranium and plutonium could be used as nuclear explosives with extreme destructive potential. The problem of their detection, especially in standard cargo containers during transit, has been described as “searching for a needle in a haystack” because of the inherently low rate of spontaneous emission of characteristic penetrating radiation and the ease of its shielding. Currently, the only practical approach for uncovering well-shielded special nuclear materials is by use of active interrogation using an external radiation source. However, the similarity of these materials to shielding and the required radiation doses that may exceed regulatory limits prevent this method from being widely used in practice. We introduce a low-dose active detection technique, referred to as low-energy nuclear reaction imaging, which exploits the physics of interactions of multi-MeV monoenergetic photons and neutrons to simultaneously measure the material’s areal density and effective atomic number, while confirming the presence of fissionable materials by observing the beta-delayed neutron emission. For the first time, we demonstrate identification and imaging of uranium with this novel technique using a simple yet robust source, setting the stage for its wide adoption in security applications.

Abstract:Muons are a fascinating probe to study nuclear properties. Muonic atoms can easily be formed by stopping negative muons inside a material. The muon is subsequently captured by the nucleus and, due to its much higher mass compared to the electron, orbits the nucleus at very small distances. During this atomic capture process the muon emits characteristic X-rays during its cascade down to the ground state. The energies of these X-rays reveal the muonic energy level scheme, from which properties like the nuclear charge radius or its quadrupole moment can be extracted. While almost all stable elements have been examined using muons, probing highly radioactive atoms has so far not been possible. The muX experiment has developed a technique based on transfer reaction inside a high pressure hydrogen/deuterium gas cell to examine targets available only in microgram quantities.

Abstract:In recent decades, rare-isotope facilities have enabled the study of short-lived, neutron-rich nuclei. Their measured properties indicate that shell structure changes in the regime of unbalanced neutron-to-proton ratios compared with that of stable nuclei. In the so-called islands of inversion in the nuclear chart—around the neutron-rich nuclei 32 Mg, 42 Si and 64 Cr, for example—the textbook shell model predicts spherical shapes due to the respective magic neutron numbers of 20, 28 and 40 of these nuclei. However, nuclei in these regions turn out to be deformed in their ground states. Another hallmark of these islands is shape coexistence, where a nucleus assumes different shapes with excitation energy. Here we present evidence for this phenomenon from the observation of an excited 0 + state in 62 Cr, two neutrons away from the heart of the island of inversion around neutron number N = 40. We use large-scale shell-model calculations to interpret the results, and we report extrapolations for the doubly magic nucleus 60 Ca.

Abstract:Molecular photoabsorption results in an electronic excitation/ionization which couples to the rearrangement of the nuclei. The resulting intertwined change of nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom determines the conversion of photoenergy into other molecular energy forms. Nucleobases are excellent candidates for studying such dynamics, and great effort has been taken in the past to observe the electronic changes induced by the initial excitation in a time-resolved manner using ultrafast electron spectroscopy. The linked geometrical changes during nucleobase photorelaxation have so far not been observed directly in time-resolved experiments. Here, we present a study on a thionucleobase, where we extract comprehensive information on the molecular rearrangement using Coulomb explosion imaging. Our measurement links the extracted deplanarization of the molecular geometry to the previously studied temporal evolution of the electronic properties of the system. In particular, the protons of the exploded molecule are well-suited messengers carrying rich information on the molecule's geometry at distinct times after the initial electronic excitation. The combination of ultrashort laser pulses to trigger molecular dynamics, intense X-ray free-electron laser pulses for the explosion of the molecule, and multi-particle coincidence detection opens new avenues for time-resolved studies of complex molecules in the gas phase.

Abstract:Nucleation plays a critical role in many physical and biological phenomena ranging from crystallization, melting and evaporation to the formation of clouds and the initiation of neurodegenerative diseases. However, nucleation is a challenging process to study in experiments especially in the early stage when several atoms/molecules start to form a new phase from its parent phase. Here, we advance atomic electron tomography to study early stage nucleation at 4D atomic resolution. Using FePt nanoparticles as a model system, we reveal that early stage nuclei are irregularly shaped, each has a core of one to few atoms with the maximum order parameter, and the order parameter gradient points from the core to the boundary of the nucleus. We capture the structure and dynamics of the same nuclei undergoing growth, fluctuation, dissolution, merging and/or division, which are regulated by the order parameter distribution and its gradient. These experimental observations differ from classical nucleation theory (CNT) and to explain them we propose the order parameter gradient (OPG) model. We show the OPG model generalizes CNT and energetically favours diffuse interfaces for small nuclei and sharp interfaces for large nuclei. We further corroborate this model using molecular dynamics simulations of heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation in liquid-solid phase transitions of Pt. We anticipate that the OPG model is applicable to different nucleation processes and our experimental method opens the door to study the structure and dynamics of materials with 4D atomic resolution.

Abstract:New insights into the fission process and the structure of neutron-rich nuclei have been gained by measuring gamma-gamma and gamma-gamma-gamma coincidences of the prompt gamma-rays following the spontaneous fission of Cf-252. The data were taken with the Compton Suppression Spectrometer System at HHIRF. New high spin levels were observed in Ba-143,Ba-145,Ba-147. Only in Ba-143 are intertwined bands observed with the characteristics of the octupole structure found only in Ba-144. New high spin states observed in the N = 84 Te-136, Xe-138, Ba-140 nuclei exhibit a symmetry pattern suggestive of a pseudospin (f) over tilde-shell. For the first time in fission, the relative yields and neutron multiplicities were measured directly, Yields and multiplicities were measured directly for the Zr-Ce and Mo-Ba correlated fragment pairs by observing the coincidences between the gamma-rays in each fragment. Zero-neutron to ten-neutron emission yields were determined; the latter for the first time. The zero-neutron emission can be understood as a new example of cluster radioactivity. These results demonstrate that the use of the high resolution gamma-gamma-gamma coincidence technique employed here for the first time opens up a new approach to the study of the fission process that will provide previously inaccessible details of the process.

Towards simultaneous imaging of ultrafast nuclear and electronic dynamics in small molecules

Abstract:When a chemical bond is broken, the molecular structure undergoes a transformation. An ideal experiment should probe the change in the electronic and nuclear structure simultaneously. Here, we present a method for the simultaneous time-resolved imaging of nuclear and electron dynamics by combining Coulomb explosion imaging with strong-field photoelectron momentum imaging. The simplest chemical reaction, H$_2^+$ $\rightarrow$ H$^+ +$ H, is probed experimentally for the delay-dependent kinetic energy release, and numerically for the transient change in the photoelectron spectra during the dissociation process. The three-dimensional Schrödinger equation is solved in the fixed-nuclei approximation numerically and the results are compared to those from a simple imaging model. The numerical results reflect the evolution in the electron density in the molecular ion as its bond is first stretched and then brakes apart. Our work shows how simple gas-phase chemical dynamics can be captured in complete molecular movies.

Abstract:Nanocluster structures It is difficult to determine the three-dimensional structure of ultrasmall nanoparticles as they are unstable and tend to interact with any incident electron beams used to examine them. Now, using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled with imaging simulation, the size, shape, orientation and atomic arrangement of specially prepared size-selected gold nanoclusters have been determined to single-atom resolution. The particles were preformed in the gas phase and soft-landed on an amorphous carbon substrate. These materials are of interest for catalytic and biological applications.

Abstract:Much attention has been paid to seeking efficient methods for the controlled release of nuclear energy in appropriate isomer systems, which is an interdisciplinary subject. Utilizing atomic processes for releasing is a relatively feasible scheme, where atomic data play very important roles. A high-efficient atomic database is introduced. Such database has the energy structure information of elements with atomic number smaller than 96 (including their ions with all ionization degrees), which allows a fast searching. Therefore some possible isomer systems which can be triggered by atomic processes can be found out. The applications of the database in the processes of nuclear excitation by electronic transition(NEET) of 197Au and nuclear excitation by electron capture(NEEC) of 178Hf are presented and show its validity in the study of searching the appropriate isomer systems.
