Abstract:The original Hotelling-Solomons inequality indicates that an upper bound of |mean - median|/(standard deviation) is 1. In this note, we find a new bound depending on the sample size, which is strictly smaller than 1.

Abstract:An upper bound of the logarithmic mean is given by a convex combination of the arithmetic mean and the geometric mean. In addition, a lower bound of the logarithmic mean is given by a geometric bridge of the arithmetic mean and the geometric mean. In this paper, we study the bounds of the logarithmic mean. We give operator inequalities and norm inequalities for the fundamental inequalities on the logarithmic mean. We give monotonicity of the parameter for the unitarily invariant norm of the Heron mean, and give its optimality as the upper bound of the unitarily invariant norm of the logarithmic mean. We study the ordering of the unitarily invariant norms for the Heron mean, the Heinz mean, the binomial mean and the Lehmer mean. Finally, we give a new mean inequality chain as an application of the point-wise inequality.

Abstract:We control the number of critical points of a height function arising from the Nash isometric embedding of a compact Riemannian n -manifold M . The L n/2 curvature norm ∥ R ∥ and a similar scalar ∥ R ∥ are introduced and their integral R(M) and R(M) over M . We prove that R(M) is bounded below by a constant depending only on n and the Betti numbers of M . Thus a new sphere theorem is proved by eliminating all i th Betti numbers for i = 1, .… n −1. The emphasis is that our sphere theorem imposes no restriction on the range of curvature.

Abstract:The Dvoretzky--Kiefer--Wolfowitz--Massart inequality gives a sub-Gaussian tail bound on the supremum norm distance between the empirical distribution function of a random sample and its population counterpart. We provide a short proof of a result that improves the existing bound in two respects. First, our one-sided bound holds without any restrictions on the failure probability, thereby verifying a conjecture of Birnbaum and McCarty (1958). Second, it is local in the sense that it holds uniformly over sub-intervals of the real line with an error rate that adapts to the behaviour of the population distribution function on the interval.

Abstract:The idea of the restricted mean has been used to establish a significantly improved version of Markov's inequality that does not require any new assumptions. The result immediately extends on Chebyshev's inequalities and Chernoff's bound. The improved Markov inequality yields a bound that is hundreds or thousands of times more accurate than the original Markov bound for high quantiles in the most prevalent and diverse situations. The Markov inequality benefits from being model-independent, and the long-standing issue of its imprecision is solved. Practically speaking, avoidance of model risk is decisive when multiple competing models are present in a real-world situation.

Generalized van Trees inequality: Local minimax bounds for non-smooth functionals and irregular statistical models

Abstract:In a decision-theoretic framework, the minimax lower bound provides the worst-case performance of estimators relative to a given class of statistical models. For parametric and semiparametric models, the Hájek--Le Cam local asymptotic minimax (LAM) theorem provides the sharp local asymptotic lower bound. Despite its relative generality, this result comes with limitations as it only applies to the estimation of differentiable functionals under regular statistical models. On the other hand, minimax lower bound techniques such as Fano's or Assoud's are applicable in more general settings but are not sharp enough to imply the LAM theorem. To address this gap, we provide new non-asymptotic minimax lower bounds under minimal regularity assumptions, which imply sharp asymptotic constants. The proposed lower bounds do not require the differentiability of functionals or regularity of statistical models, extending the efficiency theory to broader situations where standard results fail. The use of the new lower bounds is illustrated through the local minimax lower bound constants for estimating the density at a point and directionally differentiable parameters.

Abstract:Recently, the spectral geometric mean has been studied by some papers. In this paper, we first estimate the Hölder-type inequality of the spectral geometric mean of positive invertible operators on the Hilbert space for all real order in terms of the generalized Kantorovich constant and show the relation between the weighted geometric mean and the spectral geometric one under the usual operator order. Moreover, we show their operator norm version. Next, in the matrix case, we show the log-majorization for the spectral geometric mean and their applications. Among others, we show the order relation among three quantum Tsallis relative entropies. Finally we give a new lower bound of the Tsallis relative entropy.

Abstract:We study the lower bound for Koldobsky's slicing inequality. We show that there exists a measure $\mu$ and a symmetric convex body $K \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$, such that for all $\xi\in S^{n-1}$ and all $t\in \mathbb{R},$ $$\mu^+(K\cap(\xi^{\perp}+t\xi))\leq \frac{c}{\sqrt{n}}\mu(K)|K|^{-\frac{1}{n}}.$$ Our bound is optimal, up to the value of the universal constant. It improves slightly upon the results of the first named author and Koldobsky which included a doubly-logarithmic error. The proof is based on an efficient way of discretizing the unit sphere.

Abstract:Sukochev and Zanin resolved an open problem due to B. Simon concerning optimal constants in Hölder inequality for the weak Schatten classes of compact operators. In this note we observe that these constants, by introducing the modified weak Schatten quasi-norms, can be renormalised so that the original Simon's conjecture (with optimal constant 1) does hold. We also provide an unexpectedly simple proof for the modified Hölder inequality and its sharpness.

Abstract: It is well known that Hoeffding's inequality has a lot of applications in the signal and information processing fields. How to improve Hoeffding's inequality and find the refinements of its applications have always attracted much attentions. An improvement of Hoeffding inequality was recently given by Hertz \cite{r1}. Eventhough such an improvement is not so big, it still can be used to update many known results with original Hoeffding's inequality, especially for Hoeffding-Azuma inequality for martingales. However, the results in original Hoeffding's inequality and its refinement one by Hertz only considered the first order moment of random variables. In this paper, we present a new type of Hoeffding's inequalities, where the high order moments of random variables are taken into account. It can get some considerable improvements in the tail bounds evaluation compared with the known results. It is expected that the developed new type Hoeffding's inequalities could get more interesting applications in some related fields that use Hoeffding's results.
Sharp bounds for max-sliced Wasserstein distances

Abstract:We obtain essentially matching upper and lower bounds for the expected max-sliced 1-Wasserstein distance between a probability measure on a separable Hilbert space and its empirical distribution from $n$ samples. By proving a Banach space version of this result, we also obtain an upper bound, that is sharp up to a log factor, for the expected max-sliced 2-Wasserstein distance between a symmetric probability measure $\mu$ on a Euclidean space and its symmetrized empirical distribution in terms of the operator norm of the covariance matrix of $\mu$ and the diameter of the support of $\mu$.

Abstract:The OSSS inequality [O'Donnell, Saks, Schramm and Servedio, 46th Annual IEEE Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science (FOCS'05), Pittsburgh (2005)] gives an upper bound for the variance of a function f of independent 0-1 valued random variables, in terms of the influences of these random variables and the computational complexity of a (randomised) algorithm for determining the value of f. Duminil-Copin, Raoufi and Tassion [Annals of Mathematics 189, 75-99 (2019)] obtained a generalization to monotonic measures and used it to prove new results for Potts models and random-cluster models. Their generalization of the OSSS inequality raises the question if there are still other measures for which a version of that inequality holds. We derive a version of the OSSS inequality for a family of measures that are far from monotonic, namely the k-out-of-n measures (these measures correspond with drawing k elements from a set of size n uniformly). We illustrate the inequality by studying the event that there is an occupied horizontal crossing of an R times R box on the triangular lattice in the site percolation model where exactly half of the vertices in the box are occupied.

Abstract:In this paper we give a lower bound on the waist of the unit sphere of a uniformly convex normed space by using the localization technique in codimension greater than one and a strong version of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem. The tools used in this paper follow ideas of M. Gromov in [4]. Our isoperimetric type inequality generalizes the Gromov-Milman isoperimetric inequality in [5].

Abstract:On a convex bounded open set, we prove that Poincaré-Sobolev constants for functions vanishing at the boundary can be bounded from below in terms of the norm of the distance function in a suitable Lebesgue space. This generalizes a result shown, in the planar case, by E. Makai, for the torsional rigidity. In addition, we compare the sharp Makai constants obtained in the class of convex sets with the optimal constants defined in other classes of open sets. Finally, an alternative proof of the Hersch-Protter inequality for convex sets is given.
