Abstract:In this paper, we present sharp power mean bounds for the so-called lemniscate type means, which were introduced by Neuman (Math Pannon 18(1):77–94, 2007). The obtained results measure what the distance is between the lemniscate-type means and power means. As applications, several new bounds for the arc lemniscate functions are established.

Abstract:In this work, we analyze the variance of a stochastic estimator for computing Schatten norms of matrices. The estimator extracts information from a single sketch of the matrix, that is, the product of the matrix with a few standard Gaussian random vectors. While this estimator has been proposed and used in the literature before, the existing variance bounds are often pessimistic. Our work provides a sharper upper bound on the variance and we also give estimates of the variance that work well for numerically low-rank matrices. Our theoretical findings are supported by numerical experiments, demonstrating that the new bounds are significantly tighter than the existing ones.

Abstract:The M-eigenvalue of elasticity M-tensors play important roles in nonlinear elastic material analysis. In this paper, we establish an upper bound and two sharp lower bounds for the minimum M-eigenvalue of elasticity M-tensors without irreducible conditions, which improve some existing results. Numerical examples are proposed to verify the efficiency of the obtained results.

Abstract:We present two sharp empirical Bernstein inequalities for symmetric random matrices with bounded eigenvalues. By sharp, we mean that both inequalities adapt to the unknown variance in a tight manner: the deviation captured by the first-order $1/\sqrt{n}$ term asymptotically matches the matrix Bernstein inequality exactly, including constants, the latter requiring knowledge of the variance. Our first inequality holds for the sample mean of independent matrices, and our second inequality holds for a mean estimator under martingale dependence at stopping times.

The Geometric Median and Applications to Robust Mean Estimation

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the statistical and numerical properties of the geometric median, and its applications to the problem of robust mean estimation via the median of means principle. Our main theoretical results include (a) an upper bound for the distance between the mean and the median for general absolutely continuous distributions in R^d, and examples of specific classes of distributions for which these bounds do not depend on the ambient dimension d; (b) exponential deviation inequalities for the distance between the sample and the population versions of the geometric median, which again depend only on the trace-type quantities and not on the ambient dimension. As a corollary, we deduce improved bounds for the (geometric) median of means estimator that hold for large classes of heavy-tailed distributions. Finally, we address the error of numerical approximation, which is an important practical aspect of any statistical estimation procedure. We demonstrate that the objective function minimized by the geometric median satisfies a "local quadratic growth" condition that allows one to translate suboptimality bounds for the objective function to the corresponding bounds for the numerical approximation to the median itself, and propose a simple stopping rule applicable to any optimization method which yields explicit error guarantees. We conclude with the numerical experiments including the application to estimation of mean values of log-returns for S&P 500 data.

Abstract:The Renyi entropy plays an essential role in quantum information theory. We study the continuity estimation of the Renyi entropy. An inequality relating the Renyi entropy difference of two quantum states to their trace norm distance is derived. This inequality is shown to be tight in the sense that equality can be attained for every prescribed value of the trace norm distance. It includes the sharp Fannes inequality for von Neumann entropy as a special case.

Abstract:In this article, we study approximation properties of the variation spaces corresponding to shallow neural networks with a variety of activation functions. We introduce two main tools for estimating the metric entropy, approximation rates, and $n$-widths of these spaces. First, we introduce the notion of a smoothly parameterized dictionary and give upper bounds on the non-linear approximation rates, metric entropy and $n$-widths of their absolute convex hull. The upper bounds depend upon the order of smoothness of the parameterization. This result is applied to dictionaries of ridge functions corresponding to shallow neural networks, and they improve upon existing results in many cases. Next, we provide a method for lower bounding the metric entropy and $n$-widths of variation spaces which contain certain classes of ridge functions. This result gives sharp lower bounds on the $L^2$-approximation rates, metric entropy, and $n$-widths for variation spaces corresponding to neural networks with a range of important activation functions, including ReLU$^k$ activation functions and sigmoidal activation functions with bounded variation.
